Internet sharing -> Orange -> free evenings and weekends - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
newbie here so first post. Thought you may be able to answer a question for me?
I have just went over to Orange and got an HTC Touch HD, I use the internet sharing feature on the phone so I can connect to the internet using my phone.
Orange have given me free evenings and weekends on my phone internet, they tell me this is for internet access from the phone. The person I just spoke to couldn't tell me if this is still free when using internet sharing.
Anyone got any idea? I am assuming it is still free because in my opinion, as far as orange are concerned I am just "using the internet from my phone", I am just using the laptop at the end of it!
Any answers would be appreciated!
Martin

when you use internet setting there are two boxes
top is connection type (usb Bluetootth Pan)
can you tell me what the options are at the bottom
jus bear with me its worth it

Thanks for getting back to me, in the PC connection box i have USB and network connection is Orange Internet.
In the bottom left I press connect and get internet on my laptop

the only thing is this.
orange do not let you orange have orange internet free evening and weekends
they mean WAP free evenings and wekknds what you need to do is change the bottom box to orange wap not orange internet also
its only free if you access there orngeworld gateway first
if you bring up ie or firefox and its homepage is google youll still get charged you need to change you homepage to be orangeworld.co.uk
and make sure eveytime toy start a connection you must have the orangeworld page come up first
also if you youve already started all of thi then need to disconnect the phone for some reason remember that when you reconeect your phones the first opage to be visited is orangeworld.co.uk

Just to confirm,
I change my connection to Orange WAP
Change homepage on my PC to www.orangeworld.co.uk
Then go on to browse as I like
And i should get this all for free???

yes also ask you orange customer services if you can have the £1.50 daily cap bundle this meaans if ever they do charge you they cant charge you more than 1.50 a day
i used these two together and the times i went oline during the day
came to 3 GB and i got charged £15

Thanks for that.
I know I have the £1.50 capped bundle active. Does that mean using the other type of connection I originally used then I was still capped at £1.50?
I have loaded up IE on my pc with orangeworld.co.uk as my homepage and then opened a new tab and loaded this favourite so hopefully now it will be free.
Much appreciated!

im not sure if the cap and the free wap are used in conjuction but i know that if you use the orange internt insyead of wap then itll be capped
all in allif you find your using more than allocated
i also recomend getting the mobile broadband dongle
(if you phone signal is less than 3g there is no point
BTW id do not work for orange but have been a customer for years
also if you do in the future order the dongle then make sure you get the fre alptop theyre offering, they didnt offer me this and i seen it in an ad not long after i odered so im gonna ring them now nd give em what for

T-Mobile Web n Walk Packages

I'm looking to purchase a Web n Walk package from T-Mobile (UK) but they have two packages with different terms and conditions.
Web n Walk thats included with a mobile phone has unlimted GPRS usage, but can not be used as a modem with a laptop.
Then theres Web n Walk Professional that comes with a data card, also unlimited GPRS but can be used for modem useage.
My question relates to the first package, if I connect my phone to a laptop and use it as a modem, will they know I'm using it as a modem. As long as I'm using the same APN I cannot see how they will be able to detect whats connected, or am I missing something.
I'm also aware of the other restrictions and fair usage policies, what to other user think of the Web n Walk tariffs?
i know many people (not naming names  ) that have been using the WnW (not pro) with a data card inside there laptop since the tarrifs came out and they use it alot too, and they have never been found out or anything.
You get 1GB "fair usage" policy tho

New guy - just got an XDA Orbit.

Hi.
As you can guess my name's Pete.
I've just received an XDA orbit from O2. I've been fiddling with it for a good few hours now, and I have somequestions that I cannot find answers to in the (rather thick) user manual:
I want to completely disable the use of GPRS. Is there any way I can do this? On the phone the menus tell me I can download sattelite info for the GPS receiver (quickgps), either through GPRS or via the activesync connection. It's defaulting to the gprs and I don't want that. I want to use my home broadband connection to connect the phone to the internet, but it keeps trying to do it the other way round.
This is my first xda and I would appreciate any help or advice on this or general tips etc. If anyone has any questions they would like to ask me about this phone please feel free.
Pete.
Pete, Sorry, I can't really your question since I don't own this phone. I just wanted to ask you how does phone functionality compare with your previous phones?
Well since I've only owned conventional phones before I find the range of features quite breathtaking, but I can't compare it to other PDA-type devices not having any experience with them before. I've been using a Motorola V3 for the past 2 years, and though it's a tough phone the software sucks and the processor is very slow. The Orbit is much faster despite having to run a much more complicated operating system.
So far I'm very pleased with it, especially the size. It's by far the most compact PDA I've seen. Here it is alongside my own V3 and my daughter's W850i
Ok I've meneged to get it to work through the activesync by turning off advanced network services. Now I can update the GPS sattelite data through my broadband, and even use Internet Explorer.
I would still like to turn off GPRS completely though.
Orbit
Hi. I have just had a play with an Orbit, it is brilliant if I don’t mind saying.
I have used Palms and Psions before, but this is light years ahead.
Have a look at this site. http://www.4winmobile.com/viewtopic.php?p=42938
It provide a good over view, and some more links to see if there is any one else out there that can answers your question. After my current phones contract expires, end of Feb, I will get one. I can’t wait…
Cool - be aware that O2 will only ship the satnav software with £40 and above tariffs. Thanks for the link
I think that if you go to your settings menu and thenyour connections menu you can see the option to manage exisiting settings. in that option you can delete settings. without them it can't connect to GPRS. But back up your connection settings first. even if it means writing them down.
Also I'm not sure if the pocket pc will try to connect still and then give you a message that it failed to connect.
Yes the Orbit is nice - I wonder if Orange are going to supply it.
The HTC (manufacturer) name for this is Artemis - ask your questions the specific section of this forum as there should be a bunch of people hanging around in there who already have some experience of it.

most of my programs won't connect

Phone: HTC Wizard (T-Mobile MDA)
Current Rom: X-Plore 2.0
Radio: 2.19.11
Network: T-Mobile USA
Since upgrading to X-Plore 2.0 I am able to use Netfront, Internet Explorer, SMS, and MMS. But programs like Pocket IRC, the FTP client within Total Commander, and things like that won't connect to the net. I have verified that my settings are correct, So I donot understand what is occuring. All these worked perfectly before the upgrade but now donot at all. Unfortunately I donot have a Data Cable any longer to try and see if it was merely the rom or something else.
Please someone help!
This includes Windows Live (not connecting). I don't get it, why are browsers connecting but not my apps?
Okay just tried a hard reset. Still No Bueno.
If this helps:
Programs That Do Connect:
1. IE
2. NetFront
3. Opera (loaded only to test if it would connect)
4. SKTools (When it connects to see if there are updates available)
5. Tweaks2K2.Net (When it connects to see if updates are available)
Programs that DONOT connect:
1. PocketIRC (Keeps acting like it kind find a server to connect to just jumps from ip addy to ip addy trying to connecy)
2. Total Commander FTP Plugin (Says ''Username not accepted; Offline'' And that is on multiple FTP's including XDA'S!!)
3. Windows Live
Now I have verified my settings in connections and the fact that my browsers will connect shows me its able and is connecting and browsing the net. Please guys what could it be???? Thanks in advance!
And you are using GPRS ?
My WindowsLive is working ...i did not tested the others you said, but i am sure that Windows Live is connecting....except now, it won't work neither from my PC, that's M$'s bad not mine...
Mabe it's the connection or data plan. Are you sure that it worked before..or you changed data plan meanwhile ?
Yeah It worked before and I have not changed my data plan. If I recall it worked after the upgrade for a short while. Its been occuring for about a week now. Its bloody frusterating because my browsers all work, I can browse the internet, and do all that good stuff. I just cannot get things like PiRC & Total Commander to connect to the net. Even after a hard reset...Nothing. Could T-Mobile be blocking these apps? Of course once again that would not explain why NetFront and Opera, Sktools and Tweaks2k2 can connect. I am about to install OZ IM ill let you know if it works. Question though, Is there an alternative to using T-Mobile USA's 216 Proxy? Maybe a better one? Cuz maybe if I change the proxy to a non-T-Mobile one they won't be able to block it anymore..... Hmmm its an idea.
and sure enough OZ IM Connects its the one I found in the Ext. Rom
Yeah its gotta be a T-Mobile issue cuz all the programs that DONOT connect via GPRS/Edge connect perfectly via WIFI. Why would T-Mobile do that and is there a way around it?
Okay so I called T-Mobile and they deny doing anything of the sort. Which is good and bad. I am also getting a nice little messege in both WIFI and in GPRS when trying to download anything that states "This device is restricted from downloading this file type" when trying to download anything from the net. Any ideas?
Edit: I also called HTC and they said that there are no settings in the phone that would cuase this occurence which is bull becuase umm yeah....Anyway HTC tech support or at least every one of them that I talked to is for crud. Not very good support those guys.
Which data plan do you have? The $29.99 Internet one or the $5.99 T-zones one. If you only have the $5.99 plan, t-mobile filters a lot of the traffic that isn't on specific ports (ie port 80 for http works, but many other's won't) which causes some programs to not get network access. There were some proxies that allowed you to get around those, but a lot of them aren't working anymore last I heard.
If that's the case, probably your only solution is to pay for the full data plan which includes all ports internet access.
See the only reason I donot suspect the Data Plan being the issue (yes I have the 5.99 T-Mobile Web Plan, formely the $2.99 T-Zones) is because programs like NetFront and the like are connecting without issue. However I DO Suspect its a setting of some sort within the phone. I am going to try a level 2 Hard Reset (the one done with the combination of buttons) and see what happens. I tried a level 1 hard reset (The clear storage) to no avail. The level 2 hard reset will hopefully wipe it.

I am in the same boat as you. With my tinkering I found that programs automatically connect to the connection called "The Internet" which there is no way I can edit.
It connects to this "The Internet" automatically even when I set it to connect to my Proxy setting connection in Settings>Connections>Advanced tab on the bottom>Select Networks. Could that be the problem?
Okay after my Hard Reset 2 (the combination of buttons, I was finally able to get to download programs again, however I am back to having a 1MB download limit. And in answer to your question yes I have the same thing even though I don't have a connection called ''the internet'' other thing I have noticed is that the connection ISP does not allow for the assigning of a proxy server. Even though you can just make a new connection and assign a proxy server to that new one. This however does not circumvent our little issue. Nor does it get rid of my 1MB dl limit. Anichulis do you know how to change programs defualt connections away from Internet and assign them to use GPRS?
Hey This issue, is still occuring any ideas?

Problems with Windows Live

Anyone having problems with this.
The last few days, i can never connect to this, but can to the internet, tried all sorts and reinstalled the ROm, and another ROM, but nothing, just refuses to update once setup.
Me too, I'm on the standard £7.50 wnw and I can only assume that they have finally blocked the ports. I'm thinking about upgrading to the wnw+

having the same problem, could you report back if you upgrade and it sorts it out please
I spoke to tmob yesterday and they said that nothing has changed and it shouldn't be blocked. they suggested that its a microsoft issue, so I have opened a support case with ms.
personally I still think its tmob but I'll update you with my findings. out of interest which version do we have?
mine: 10.6.0032.2100
i have spoken with t-mo as well and they have said the same thing to me, using wifi and activesync windows live works fine, via gprs is a no go. I am currently using 10.6.0033.0600 have uninstalled and tried others as well, was using the previous i think 0200 for months without fault.
Im having exactly the same problem, and guess what? Im on the £7.50 web and walk plan.
Something really needs to be done, as my main email account is a hotmail one and I previously relied on the windows live push mail function, which used to work reliably for months on end...
When I try to force a manual sync using GPRS, it always gets hung up on the "syncronizing personal folders" stage, and my email fails to get updated.
BUMPing this thread for importance
Spot on this is v.serious, I'm about to suggest this service as a temp mail solution pending an exch install to a client.
I had a reponse from MS asking for more info so hopefully we should have an answer soon, I still think t-mob are blocking though but having said that the service came back last night for a couple of hours...
Are there any none t-mob UK users outthere that are seeing issues??
just using pocket msn now no problem with that, can sign into messenger without any fault using this loads up the mail service but not a push service, shows that is just something to do with windows live as i cant sign into messenger on that at all
support.live.com - log it as a windows live mobile issue
A question for you all, when did you last upgrade the client?? I wonder if my issues started after my last rom upgrade last week, I could downgrade but I don't really want to!
Guys, I can now CONFIRM that this is a T-Mobile issue.
I called them in my lunch break, spoke to a technical advisor. He confirmed T Mobile began blocking ports around a month ago. He could see instantly that as a webnwalk standard customer, my ports were blocked. He said to experiment, he would put the Webnwalk+ option tempoarily on my account and asked me to conduct a test. I did. I rebooted the phone once webnwalk+ was activated, and lo and behold, windows live mobile sync works perfectly.
I am waiting for him to call back in the next 10-15 mins to discuss just what T Mobile proposes to do about this. Im not paying extra for webnwalk+ just to push email. I feel this is unfair and (cosidering windows live is built into wm6) an incredible oversight on t mobiles part.
As we thought then... Can you let me know what options/which department you asked to go through to and I'll call them too.
I just asked to be put through to technical support regarding webnwalk.
The chap phoned me back, he said to test again with webnwalk put back to normal - I have, im getting sync failures again. He will call me again in the next 10 mins to propose what to do.
If I cant have push email on my £7.50 plan then I will leave the network. Its as simple as that. I hear O2 offer unlimited internet now...
t&c's from o2 (basically the same as t-mob):
Any other use of the O2 Web Bolt On tariff will not be a Permitted Use, including but not limited to:
Use of the O2 Web Bolt On tariff with
Data Cards or Modems;
Instant Messaging,
IP Telephony,
Point 2 Point file sharing and file transfer,
VoIP (e.g. Skype™),
Video and TV streaming,
Slingboxes; and
Use in conjunction with routers.

I know what you mean but I think that O2 will have the same issues with WL as T-Mob do, its a pain that ms put the messaging client in the app as that is what they have an issue with.
Have T-Mob come back yet?? I'll give them a call tomorrow see what I can do.
Ive now been asked by T Mobile to make a log of sync status in half hour intervals. I have been doing this since 2pm. First two hours on normal webnwalk, the remaining 2 hours on webnwalk+. So far it has been as predicted, syncronization failures on webnwalk and at the moment, success with webnwalk+.
Still problems
I thought it was the ROM and upgraded up and down nothing.
What is the bloody point of W&W without Push !!!
Does any service provider in the UK offer this built in, as my contract is up at the end of the year.
Just thought id update you guys.
My contact at T Mobile phoned me again, confirming he had recieved a copy of my log by email. He will be speaking to his senior colleagues tomorrow to discuss where to go from here. In the interim, he has left me with webnwalk plus and all seems to be syncing okay.

G1 Help! T-mobile hotspot access via laptop using G1

Hey everyone, I know you cannot use the the G1's hotspot access on any device other then the G1. I spend alot of time in Starbucks. Is there a way to use the G1's hotspot access for Internet on my laptop. Tethering via wi-fi is nice as is but with only edge here in Hawaii, its too slow. I was hoping someone could help me figure this out. Hopefully just a socks proxy, method will be developed for web surfing.
username should be your mobile number without dashes so 9545555555 and pw should be last 4 of social security number as listed on tmobile account, if not call and theyll fix account, mine was inactive at first

hey! thats my phone number!!!!
You can use the port forwarding app in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443025. Get you G1 signed on to the hotspot and use the program to tether your laptop.
I wasn't aware that I could use t-mobile hotspots from my laptop by logging in with my phone number. I'll have to try that out next time I'm in Starbucks. Thanks for the tip!
So if the above works for you, you're probably set, but if you have rooted your phone you can also use the tetherblu app here:
http://androidactivity.com/
This would allow you to use the free t-mob wifi hotspot access on your phone and connect to it with your laptop. It's a MUCH faster connection than the SOCKS proxy method, and you don't have to carry around a USB cable.

I was told that doesn't apply to the G1 data Hotspot account. Can anyone else confirm that? I'd love to have it working again.
Of course, I know I can use my G1 and tether the Hotspot to the laptop.

That's what I was told. Pisses me off because I was told that the G1 data plan included "HotSpots" without being told that it was on the phone only.
You can get 2 hours free at Starbucks, FYI, if you buy something on a Starbucks Card (gift card, not the credit card).
I was told that even my laptop would work... but soon found out otherwise.

Honestly the idea of paying for WiFi has run its course. All of the (non-Starbucks) coffee shops around here offer free WiFi.
One thing you might find interesting is that pretty much every sports bar (e.g. Buffalo Wild Wings) has free WiFi. Why? Two words: fantasy baseball.
Even our airport (Denver) has free WiFi now, although you have to sit through an ad to access it.
Any news on this. I thought I had seen somewhere an app that did this, but I can't find it anymore. Why doesn't someone make a "TetherPatch" application. Screen splits into two halves. On one side how your computer is connecting to g1 on the other how your g1 is connecting to internet. And the app makes the "patch" to get the data flowing. If you make the app, gimme some love.

There are tethering apps out there already.
Could you tell me which apps allow me to connect this way?
laptop >> USB >> G1 >> WiFi (Tmo HotSpot)
I found the one that let's you connect to the net over the 3G network. I am looking for a way to use this concept at a hotspot. Thanks. All my searches don't seem to get me that info.
It's a no go with the G1 data plan. You can connect to the hotspot via the G1 but not from your laptop. Kinda stupid in my eyes seeming I could do it with when I had my Dash...but oh well...on to other methods.
-Tonloc69
By the way this was verified by T-Mo and I even tried fighting about it...damn...damn...damn
