G1 Problem... Not even Tmo Techs can solve - G1 Android Development

Ok so I called up Tmo because my G1 is acting messed up. I spoke to about 6 different people who had no idea what the problem was, and all offered to send a replacement...
Scenerio:
I had the phone charging and when I unplugged it, I hit the red "Hang Up" button (so I can wake it up). Usually by doing this, the phone would prompt me to hit Menu > My Unlock code.
However, when I hit it, it took me right to the UI, the "Desktop."
So that caught me off guard. I figured I may have changed some setting before, so I went to Settings>Security and Location and made sure my "Require Pattern" was checked. IT WAS!
I even tried to re-do the "shape" i made for the unlock.
From here, I wanted to go back to the main menu (desktop) so I hit the HOME key. NOTHING. Yeah, the home key does nothing. Nor does the Green "Answer" button.
What I've done:
1) Reset the phone numerous times
2) Uninstalled most recent applications + more.
3) Spoke to Tmo who had no idea.
Do YOU guys have any idea? Lool.
Thanks!

I'm living in beijing right now so when i had the same problem with my white us G1 i had to figure out a way myself. what i did was to factory reset my G1 and it went back to normal.

Raygun,
Thanks for the reply.
Just wondering though:
If I backup my apps with MyBackup, would I be able to restore them back on as if I never did a factory restore? In other words, if I restore with the MyBackup Backup, would I receive full functionality of the apps again?
Thanks again

I've had a very similar problem on a development image. If the phone thinks that it isn't activated, then it disables keylock, home, and the call button. The activation flag is stored in a database somewhere, but I forget where. Doing a factory reset and then activating again should fix it (if that's the problem).
The nandroid backup might actually replicate the problem, because the activation flag is stored in the /data partition along with all your apps..
This might not be the problem though!

Yep, minus the settings of each app, and the backing up of home shortcuts, if they are in folders...they won't be in the right place...but the placement of the folder and icons is correct, just not the ones inside of folders on the desktop.

Thank you guys both.
Factory restoring right now. If it comes to the problem aziwopqd said (replicating the issue when restoring) I guess I'm outta luck.
Let's hope for the best.
Side question: (i know its been posted numerous times) If I root my G1, could i re-flash it back to "normal" (as if i bought it... brand new(original OS ))
Thnx
Best wishes,

Had the same problem... I thought mine was water damage though. There was a chance it had gotten wet but wasn't sure. I didn't even think to ask about it here so I sent it in and got a warranty exchange. New one works great, and I rooted it and got jf rc33 1.42 on it without even touching a computer. I thought it was cool lol
Oh ya, and yes you can restore it to factory everything. Just flash the .nbh file. You can even upgrade from there to the ota rc33 if you wanted to...

I was about to get the exchange, but I tried a Factory Reset. It solved the issue.
Haha - nicely done. All without touching a computer? Impressive.

Yup. Going through a divorce and wife took the computer so I didn't have a choice. All you need is linda file manager, and an unzip app. You can do it all with the default browser and those apps. Now I have everything saved on my sd card in different sub folders so I can root any g1 and flash the jf modded rc 33 by just popping my sd card in and putting the files on the root of the card in order. Done it to 2 others already.

Sorry @ divorce.
Very neatly done. What unzip app did you use? I've tried the 2 (i could find), and they didn't really work. Lol.

Thanks...
I tried usuing linda first (love the app) since it says in supports unzipping. But nowhere could I find anything about how. So I got UnZip. It confused me at first, kept saying blah blah interupted blah force close or wait. So I force closed bout three times. Decided to press wait.... sure enough, sure enough about 1 min latter it prompted me 'unzip complete'. During that time, however, the phone 'acted' frozen. Couldn't scroll or press home or anything. But it worked in the end.

By any chance did those of you that lost your lock screen download the app aviator watch? I had this happen to me and that was the only app that I had installed before losing the lock screen. Also, I lost the option of silencing the phone if you hold down the power button. Under phone options it just said power off, the silent mode option was not avail.

Now that you mention it, I too lost the ability to silence with the power button. But no, never downloaded aviator watch...

Sorry sir, but I think you are right! I had the same exact problem and after reading this post. I thought I would try resetting the google account before a factory reset.
Went to Settings->Applications->Manage applications->Google Apps and cleared the data. Afterwards, it asked me to sign in as if I factory reset the phone. After inputting the credentials, everything started to work. Thanks!
Hope this helps anybody else.

[Q] NoDo messed up my keyboard!

First post here, sorry if it's in the wrong place. Here is the back story for my problem...using an AT&T Samsung Focus, carrier-unbranded it and forced update to NoDo using the method that tricks Zune. Everything was working well, had version 7.0.7390. Yesterday when AT&T finally released NoDo for the Focus I figured what the hell, there may be something phone/carrier-specific, so I'll update the proper way. The update went fine, rebooted and I have legit NoDo.
My specific problem is that the keyboard is slow to respond now. It seems like if I'm typing faster than a certain speed, it can't keep up and the buttons don't flash and make the click noise with every press, like I've reached some kind of threshold. I've tried turning off/on all the settings for sound on press, auto-correct, etc., and none of it has worked. I also reset the phone completely via the About > Reset Phone option, but that didn't help. Has ANYONE else noticed this problem at all with any WP7 phones on NoDo? I also tried to reset with the Power+Vola Down+Camera button combo, but when I get to the format menu, the screen does not respond to touch AT ALL.
The keyboard problem is more a nuisance than anything and I can live with it if I have no choice, but I'd like to fix it if I can. It's frustrating when I press a button but the phone doesn't respond to it, so I think I've made mistakes when I really haven't. Does anyone have any suggestions for either the slow keyboard response or the unresponsive format menu?
My keyboard gets a bit slow if im typing in an app that requires internet and ive got a weak connection or if its still loading. Im not sure but i think you interact with the format menu by using the volume buttons
I noticed the same thing with my focus. The only difference is I just waited until AT&T officially released nodo until I updated. I didn't try to force it. And my keyboard is pretty slow when texting. Sometimes when I send the message, it doesn't show up in the message feed for a few seconds. I wonder if this has to do with the update that AT&T added.
Yep same issue here post Nodo, ATT Focus. Esp. Check out the slow repeat rate on the keyboard (like holding down the backspace key.) I find it pretty annoying, was actually gonna reset my phone to see if that helped bc the keyboard doesnt keep up with me anymore.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using Board Express
I only noticed the problem after updating with the legit ATT update. I can verify that resetting the phone does NOT fix the problem, and that it must be related to the ATT NoDo. I'm thinking of trying to somehow go back to the forced NoDo update. Have any of you tried to do a "Reformat" of your focus and have it completely unresponsive when you get to that menu? I also tried to use the hard buttons in this menu and they didnt work either. That's another thing I noticed but I can't say for sure if that was a problem in the forced NoDo I had before.
So my keyboard is working fine. Before, when my keyboard was lagging, I had a 2GB Sandisk microsd card in my phone. This weekend I upgraded to a 16GB kingston microSD card and since the reset, my keyboard is working fine. I also noticed that the lag between when I hit send to when the message showed up in the feed is not there any more.
Maybe the nodo update exaggerated the issues that can occur with some sd cards.
Do you have a microsd card in your phone?
Nope, no SD card in my Focus. This problem never came up on the previous version of NoDo that I had (non AT&T version). It only started after I let Zune update my phone through the normal process and got the AT&T version. From what I can tell, it's directly related to that.
Ok well then the SD card shouldn't be an issue. Maybe it has something to do with the hard reset I did. Maybe the accumulation of text messages in a "feed" is causing the typing issues. And by hard-resetting, I cleared the feed.
Try texting someone that does not have a feed, or delete their feed then text. My text messaging feeds are very small right now since I did the reset just last night so that might be why it is working fine for me now.
I've also done a reset on mine as well, still no luck. I can't do a reformat on mine, though, because the reformat screen is completely unresponsive. I reset through About > Reset Phone though and it didn't fix the problem.
The reformat is what I meant to say, sorry. So does the reset you did clear the text messaging feeds?

Yes, it clears everything (apps, data, texts, media, etc) and sets the phone back to factory settings, NoDo. This is the reset, though, and not the "format." I've still been unable to use format.
Well maybe it is a combination of things. Maybe it also has to do with the forced update as well. I've been seeing some people say that they cannot do a reformat after doing the forced update.
well i done the first method of getting the nodo update , but when att came out with the nodo for my focus i updated it that way, but it did a 100% complete and all...everything went well on it but when it start back up it said the sd cd was corrupt that i had to so a reset on it but after that of course i lost my jailbreak when it did where i had it from prevent it from locking again but after reset it worked fine....keyboard never lagged out
I managed to reformat my Focus using the Vol Down + Camera + Power buttons, did a clean install, and am still having this problem. I'm out of things to try with this. Anyone else have any suggestions?

My phone is completely freaking out software-wise :/

So, about 2 or 3 days ago I downgraded back to Froyo from the latest Gingerbread leak (too many bugs.) I did so with GTG's Ulimate unbrick, and then I flashed the pre-rooted/ pre-CWM stock ROM to it. I updated to the latest UCKH1 to be up to date, and then I restored a backup I made in ROM Manager a few weeks back. After that, I restored all my apps with Titanium backup. Now on to the issues. First time around my phone literally crapped out software-wise. It was literally force closing everything, texting wouldn't work, the Advanced power menu was gone except for Power Off. That only started after a full day of use with no issues whatsoever. It was completely random. Well late last night, I factory reset and put my apps back on again. Well I woke up this morning to find that my phone's suddenly being dumb again. Except this time the only issues that I know of are, the Advanced power menu's gone except for Power Off, and the home button will not function AT ALL. If anyone has any idea what's going on, or how I can resolve this, please lend a hand.

It sound like every time you encountered a problem it was after restoring your app with TiBu. Are you just restoring apps or apps&data? See how your phone runs without restoring apps. Try restoring apps(without data) and see what happens, or just manually download apps again. Could be a problem with data from the apps.

I was wondering the same. I have indeed been restoring apps with data. Didn't want to lose my Cut the Rope progress But, they may end up being my problem. I've always gotten away without issues, so I guess it's about time for one to happen, haha. I'll try it out after work today and post how it goes.

Most likely the problem lies with the backups being from a GB rom and now you are trying to put them an a Froyo rom. Probably saves it differently or something.
They tell you "Not" to use the backups from Titanium as they can cause issues, I reinstalled back to Stock Froyo as well running the latest UCKH1, When you do the Update to UCKH1 my advice is to go to Settings: Privacy: and do a Factory reset to fix the clock problem The clock will appear screwed up and will correct itself even when it's on Automatic Mode. Otherwise all is fine downgrading from GB Rom. Install all normal apps as usual, Screw Titanium my advice is just save the .apk file for the app in a Folder on your External SD Card, that's my quick way of reinstalling all my apps back regardless of losing settings.
you can also use tibu to restore single apps with data, you can try the ones you want to save progress and see if it causes issues. just stay away from system apps
I've never ha a problem with TitBU, as long as I restored "missing apps & data" ONLY!
same here, regardless of android version or even restoring on a different device. the only time i have seen issues is when i accidentally hit restore all apps with data, including system apps. thats when i got the constant fc and crashing

You know, now that I think about it I actually made a backup from UCKJ2. That's more than likely my problem. Funny how I'm looking for all these complicated things and it ends up being something easy. Haven't restored anything, so I'll wait a day or two and see if everything stays like it should, and then I'll restore only what's needed to ensure it stays that way. Sorry it took so long to respond, had work, haha. Thanks guys all the responses were much appreciated.

[Q] Bluetooth will not turn on...

Just got a replacement N5 from Google for a warranty issue and after full re-root and setup I went to get in the car today and use bluetooth and I noticed a problem. Bluetooth will not turn on. Tapping the slider moves the position to on but it remains greyed out and, in fact, off. I tried a restore of the bluetooth share and pairings from Titanium backup and that just hung and never completed. I can always factory reset it but I hate to go back through that ... anyone got a way to 're-install' bluetooth and save a reset and reconfiguring for me?

This apparently has been problem for Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. One poster from android central posted this for his Nexus 4:
I called Google technical support and they found a solution for me.
-In your Nexus 4, go to parameters/Applications/All/Bluetooth
-Here: erase cache, data and updates.
-Resart your phone.
In Nexus 5 Settings>Apps>All>Bluetooth Share. There you might try Clear data and Clear cache.
Got nothing to lose. Hope it works. I cannot test it myself since my Bluetooth is working.
Thanks for the suggestion. I had looked around and saw a couple mentions loosely similar related to the N4 but wasn't sure if same applied to N5. Looking though ... I do not have a bluetooth share app installed. That must be the issue, anyone got a way to re-install that Bluetooth Share, seems my backups from Titanium won't restore it.
Found thread where someone had your issue and solved it with reset.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/activate-bluetooth-t2595761
Maybe you could do backup to PC and get this restored with reset.
I know it is a PITA.
I figured a reset would square it away, was just hoping to find a way to avoid that if I could. I suppose next w/e I will reset if I don't find another way to get BY back.

When I run this app, it says no BT folder found. Seems the issue is that somehow this BT Share app just isn't there.
Another fix...
I know you already solved your problem, but I thought for people like me, who have found this thread later on, I'd just sign up to XDA and post my fix.
I didn't want to do a hard reset, so I played around with the "Bluetooth-Share"-thing in the Android app manager.
I cleared the cache and the data, that didn't do anything, even after a reboot I couldn't get the Bluetooth toggle from beging greyed out.
After that, I found that button at the very top right, that is labeled as " Uninstall Updates" or something like that. I tapped it and tapped OK at the following prompt. Where the "Uninstall Updates" button was before, should now be a greyed out "Disable" button. Then you need to reboot.
Try to enable Bluetooth. The toggle should turn blue after a few seconds as usual. Bluetooth should work normally now.
I hope my post helped anybody, :cyclops:

I am not having any luck. My bluetooh stopped working after doing a hard reset. Please note I've never rooted or flashed a ROM, or unlocked boot loader or anything. My N4 and N5 have always been completely stock.
I've tried everything in this thread, except I am not sure what hiwye is talking about as I cannot find an uninstall updates. I went ahead and tried another factory restore/wipe and still have same issue. I hit toggle to turn Bluetooth on, it then immediately toggles back to off.
Just as a side note, my bluetooh was working fine until the factory wipe/reset. I did the reset in an attempt to fix a sim card slot issue, that is also still not resolved. Upon restarting my phone, I get "no sim card" message. I got a new sim card and also confirmed the sim card works fine in other phones..... i can turn off, pop it out and back in and boot it again. sometimes it will see the sim card again. It may take 20 times, but finally work..... I should probably start a new thread on the sim card thing, but wondering if my motherboard needs replaced.....

I get the same Sim card missing screen I have tried a new sprint Sim and same issue. They way I have been fixing it is to pop off back cover and where the vibration motor sits (stays attached to cover) I put my finger in the hole and squeeze the 2 parts together and hold tight till it finishes booting and it will see the card. I'm not sure what's exactly the problem is but it works as temp fix and will stay until the next reboot.

Only device so doing it and taking PUC not gonna happen let me look up some images and I'll post them its not that difficult if you have had the back cover off before its very obvious where motor is. The motor is literally just under the flash led. Pop off cover starting at the top and slowly down each side with a guitar pick there is a tiny bit of adhesive at the bottom of rear cover about where the soft keys are when phone is on. Peel that up slow and you will see the vibration motor stuck to rear cover. See the space it came out of and put finger in that hole. And other finger opposite the first one on the glass and squeeze.... Not crazy so you break screen. Don't take much pressure. Start light and boot it. Says no Sim, try again with a little more pressure. When it first happened I googled sh*t for 2 days and couldn't find a fix. And this worked when I tried and a few reboots after. I shut phone off or battery dies I gotta do it to get Sim recognized.

Worked for me, thanks.

I accidently disabeled/deleted the Google app

so I am an Idiot,
I had this issue with my headphones on my phone that google would pop up on random times to ask me wether I needed help from the voice support thingy.
So I looked up some video's on how to fix it and most videos said to just disable/delete the google app from my phone in App manager.
Everything went OK but when I wanted to go to my home screen, an error popped up saying there was no home screen...
I'm like; 'What the hell?!?'
so I turned off my device completely just to discover it wouldn't boot up correctly when I started it again.
now I am stuck with only my bootloader and I can't get back to factory mode, I did not root my device for any of your interests
pls help someone who knows something that might help me
Go to recovery when turning device on and from there do a factory reset?

So you did something in settings, or are you rooted and used some app to delete stuff? The answer to your problems really depends on what you did.
As a quick fix, log into your Google account via a PC and find Nova Launch (or some reputable launcher) and push it to the phone, once it installed press Home and it should ask you to select your Home screen and make sure to tick "Always".
The real problem here is you tried to a fix a problem that didn't fixing, just a quick settings change... A quick thread started here would have probably got the quick answer of turning of Google Assistance Anywhere to fix the problem without messing anything up.

Hi, I did not root my this device and did not delete the home screen from TWRP, just from the application manager. but it's more than just the home screen. I said I've tried to restart the device but when I was booting it up again, I only saw the Motorola logo loading for like 15 minutes.
It does connect to my PC and it recognizes the device, but I can't find it in File Explorer.
I might try to install Nova launcher, just to see if it works or not.
thanks for the reply though

If your not rooted you couldn't have deleted the app needed, only disabled it. Pull down the notification shade twice (or with 2 fingers) and tap the settings gear, scroll to Apps, then scroll to the bottom where disabled apps would be listed and re-enable everything and reboot. If that still doesn't work, push Nova, and as a last resort you can perform a factory reset.

I don't think u get what I'm saying, I can't boot up my phone so I can't swipe down and go to the settings. thus leaving me with a useless phone.

Then factory reset is your only option.

When I do that, it does the same thing as if I didn't. I don't really know how to push applications from my PC to my phone. Maybe I can try to redownload the google app through pushing.

Glad you got it working but I am a little confused...
Either way, it's like a wise man once said "It doesn't matter if it's duct tape or tie wraps, fixed is fixed". :highfive:

Google Backup Greyed out OnePlus 7 Pro

Hey guys I received my Oneplus 7 Pro yesterday and its a great phone but I found a problem. If I go to Setting-System-Backup, under Google Backup the Backup Now button is greyed out.
I did some Googling and found a temp fix which worked for another Android Device. If you disable the screen lock by not securing the OnePlus with a code or password then go back to Backup, the Backup Now button is now enabled, but as soon as you put screen lock back on it greys out again.
Also there is a message under each item waiting to be backed up such as App Data, the message is waiting to Backup. Anyone else seen this problem on any other devices and is there a perm fix?
I reset my phone to factory defaults and went through the whole setup process same issue. Don't understand what's going on.
same here in germany
Same thing in Canada.
Hi,
I noticed this was the case a couple of days ago when I first got the phone. I have left it alone for two days and I now have the option to force a backup (ie the button isn't greyed out). I also went into it by Settings, Google, Backup rather than Settings, System, Backup. Not sure if that makes a difference?
I am backing everything up now so I can confirm it works. Maybe the phone needs a couple of days to settle down before it allows the backups to be taken manually?
Mines working fine. Button not greyed out.

I've got the same problem.
Blue button for me.
I had the same issue the only way I was able to fix is the same way the original poster fixed it was was removing the passcode on the device. I was wondering if this was one plus issue? or just carrier modded version issue I currently have the t-mobile version of the device I also tired doing the backup via ADB and that didn't work. But as soon as I removed the password it worked immediately.
