Full Factory Restore G1 - G1 Android Development

Can I (we) get a stickied walk through with file links?
My main goal would be to restore my G1 to be able to receive official OTA updates again.
I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate this. Thanks in advance!

If you did a search there is a thread for this
This post tells you how.
Very simple.

Thanks for the response. Using search I found many posts with similar instructions. What I need to know for sure was if the linked RC29 image is an official release or a tweaked version. Remember my main goal is to be able to receive OTA updates again. No one has officially confirmed receiving an OTA update after going through the downgrade steps. It's just implied that it works.
It would also be interesting to know if it goes from RC29 straight to RC33 or not.
Once again, a sticky would be nice.

Well it is simple...but if you have hard spl, and jf rc33 dont you have to push the official keys so it can work I have searched and looked at many threads. sorry about the noob question. Im sending back my phone so i want to make sure its stock

I followed the steps in the post. My G1 also had Hard SPL and was rooted with JF RC33. I didn't mess with "official keys" as I'm assuming they come with the RC29 image that was linked.
A stock G1 bought from a store receives the update wtihin 3 days so we'll see if this works.

Ok confirmed. 2 days after following the steps mentioned above I received RC33. Full stock factory reset restore with update.

How to go from RC33 from RC29 manually without root?

How to downgrade from Rc33
Ok...I updated to RC33. Didn't know before I updated that I wouldn't be able to go from RC33 to root. So now I need to downgrade.
Can anyone help me downgrade from RC33 to RC29? Or maybe even RC33 to RC30? I searched and couldn't find anything on this but did see someone post that JF walked someone thru it recently....how ever I can not find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I been in that thread....it's instructions to downgrade from RC30....not RC33.
And I have been going backwards in that thread from the latest posts for about 10 pages now and see nothing about downgrading from RC33.
Doesn't matter what rom you have installed as of now.
You need to follow the instructions and then pick which rom betters you.
Or even try going straight to 30 by renaming it, update, and install it in recovery mode.
Ok....I missed one small word....RC30 and above...
Thanks...in the process of trying to gain root now...
To make it clear for me, is the old downgrading process with a new german RC33 G1 still possible or will it fail because of an new SPL?

i don't really understand your problem. you want to downgrade because you don't have root anymore?
if so, it's a bit strange because i have root access on RC33 Oo

Think he means he upgraded to OTA RC33. Anyway like the previous posters have already indicated, the NBH file downgrades OTA RC33 as well.
ah i see, my mistake.
Hey guys I have two quick questions:
1. I have an OTA rc33 (stock) update on my phone I just received today, in order to root my g1, I will need to downgrade to the stock rc29. It's imposible just to get my phone rooted straight from rc33?
2. If the first question is true. After I downgrade and rooted the rc29, can I just download the latest jfv1.41 rc33 (developer version) ? Or I would need to update the rooted rc30 first in order to get the jfv1.41 rc33.
Your kindly help and suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Correct you need to downgrade to RC29 first for root.

For RC29 you can install JF's Modded version of RC33

Just One Question:
Is it still possible to downgrade with an GERMAN G1 with the original Bootloader installed on it, or is the security hole fixed which allows downgrading with the nbh File. Please do someone answer me that question please
I tried root but had problems went back to RC29 stock but now I would like to go to RC33. What do I need to do to manually update?
Viper
Links to manually update are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=479571
i manually installed rc33 ota update and so i decided root my g1 then i get stuck on the colorful boot screen.
as the instructions on downgrading from rc30 i suspect it would be the same on a g1 with rc33.
im not sure if the formatting was done correct but i did the following:
on my eee linux netbook i typed
umnount /dev/sdd1
mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdd1
the zip file contained a file named "DREAIMG.nbh" the instructions quoted the file name as "DREAMIMG.nbh" so i tried it with both names and i get the same thing.

If I want to revert back to "official" G1 firmware, what about the HardSPL?

I plan on rooting my phone in the next couple of days, but I was wondering if the HardSPL that you install during the "How To Root your G1" tutorial will cause any issues if I want to go back to the "official" g1 firmware from Tmobile. From reading about SPL, the stock SPL is from HTC but the HardSPL thats on the tutorial is modified. Would I replace the modified SPL if I want to go back to the official firmware?
If you look real hard, you can find a sticky about this!
But I'll be nice and sweet tonight, so here it is!

Did you post in the wrong thread? That link is about rc33 OTA update. My question is about getting back to official firmware after rooting the phone and whether the HardSPL can stay or revert back to the original.

to go back to original everything just use the original spl in an update.zip and then use the DREAIMG.nbh from when you rooted your phone and you will have stock stuff like it just came out of the box

So if I want to go back I would first install the rc29 then the original SPL, then upgrade to rc33?
Whats the purpose of using the HardSPL vs the original SPL?
no, do the original SPL THEN the .nbh you need to have root to flash an update.zip that is not signed with the proper keys, as for the benefits of hard SPL over the original go here and read

Thanks. Some of the FAQs are not very clear. I'm not sure what you mean by EVERYTHING I've said on the board...
btw, are you hoping I brick my phone? So far I've read 4 different tutorials on how to root your phone. Each one has something different than the other. I'm just trying to get the facts straight before rooting my phone.
look for the thread "app that roots your phone" tell him in a PM that you want to beta test it, when i ran it or him on the last version he needed to fix the telnet script and he is pretty sure he got that working. i would give the link but since it is not my app it is not my place to give out the link.
i do not hope you brick your phone, but i see it as an inevitable thing, i know what i'm doing, i'm no guru but certainly not a n00b and i have managed to "brick" my phone just bout every day because i am always trying new things. the main thing to remember is that as long as when you turn your phone in you get the SPL or recovery then you do not have a true brick. i wish you the best in all your hacking but be forewarned that everything you try has the potential to render the phone unusable for a few hours till you figure out how to fix it. ALWAYS keep the DREAIMG.nbh on your sdcard and an update.zip that contains one of the many JF builds and you will never be too far from fixing your phone.

I understand. Hopefully I wont brick the phone but the nice thing about GSM phones is that I can jut pop my SIM card into my old phone if any issues come up with the G1. I just see people being mean to noobs when at some point in time they were noobs also.
The main reason I want to root the phone is to move the cache to my SD card. The onboard memory on the G1 is a joke. I knew the limitations when I bought the phone in October, but I thought for sure they would have come out with a update that lets you run apps from your SD card. Being a early adopter is fun
if you have less than a class 6 sdcard then moving the cache will have loads of lag, took 3 seconds to delete an email on my class 4. but if you just wanna move apps then you'll be fine

Interesting. I may have to buy a microSDHC card since the microSD card that came with the phone has no rating on it. After reading about SDHC, it seems only SDHC has the 2,4,6 rating.
use the RC29 NBH, it flashes everything including bootloader, then use the official signed RC33 update (40mb) and you will be back to stock rc33

i was a noob before i found xda.. but in the short time i have been here i have learned sooo much.. i love this site and my rooted/themed G1!
Welcome!

Getting confused, I have RC30 (Rooted), Going to update

Hey all, Ill only ask this once, (Since after this time, Ill know for future updates and be on the right path =) )since this G1 is so new dev wise, its getting confusing when im studying everything all at once and only updated rooted once to the custom RC30. I saw the newer update is RC33, now when I apply that, is it required EACH TIME to wipe the device? Im asking cause it would be a pain to reinstall each app I had installed there to begin with. I know I wiped the 1st time I rooted and updated. So just wanted to check.
Also whats the new additions in these updates? Any good changelogs out there? I kinda like keeping the Tmobile US stuff on mine, but root access is awesome. =)
Thanks for any update tips out there atm.
Edit, My G1 is still on Firmware 1.1 is that a seperate update or how is everyone updating that with the custom stuff? Thanks. (And do I need that FW update before going RC33?)
Nope, you won't lose anything when you upgrade the firmware normally. Going from JF RC30 to JF RC33 should be fine
Check the stickied topic on the top of the forum to find out more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
The changelog is somewhere in there.
Thank you. =) I didnt read that one since it was talking about for UK users. Heh. Least it explained things a lil more. =DDD
What about the firmware? Seems Ill have to do the new radio too, but wondering.. is that radio one for US too or only uk? Since its in a UK thread. =/
Nah, it's not a UK topic. He just modifies the title when he adds something new. The radio should be for the US version. Just download the radio and JF RC33 and throw them on your microSD (one at a time obviously, named update.zip).
Firmware 1.1 is just like the base firmware number, you can ignore that. Firmware 1.5 (I think) is cupcake, so you get the idea.
Ok so the firmware is nothing major atm to update or would you still upset it? I havent looked into cupcake yet.
No, completely ignore the firmware number, the only numbers you want to look at are RC30, 33, etc...
Ok this is odd. I updated fine to RC33, however when I try to get back in recovery mode to apply the radio rom, it wont go into the recovery mode. It just keeps rebooting to the G1 screen when im holding the home button. Anyone seen that before or how to get back into the recovery mode?
Anyone have any ideas?

I didn't do a wipe and was fine. I DID do a Nandroid before, though.
Wipe apparently isn't always necessary but I was stuck on the 'Android' screen because i didn't do a wipe. i say do it to be safe.
Yeah a wipe isn't always a must but its highly recommended when switching to a new build.

Restore magic to Out of box condition

Hope someone can help with a few things
i have a UK Magic on vodafone, updated to crb43
Then I wanted to try the google ion rom (not haykuro, the image released elsewhere) as it was faster and had voide dialing
I used the new-recovery to install it, booting it from fastboot rather than flashing it. I made a nandroid backup first.
Anyways, I wanted to go back to default rom and OTA updates, so thought i'd restore my backup.
\
I've done this, but had to flash the new haykuro spl...
My question is will i get OTA updates with this SPL?
I cant find the stock spl anywhere for download, whats the hard spl - does it exist for the magic or just the dream???
Basically i just want the simplicity i started with not bothered with root.
really? no one knows?

Hi dazcox5181,
The answer is a few posts below yours.
I haven't tried myself as I'm very happy with my rooted Magic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3857151&postcount=10
Thanks, I thought that might have something to do with it.
Now back to Voda system, data and recovery with the spl linked above. Should that now get me back to being tied to vodafones OTA updates?
I'm new to Android, so I'm not sure how much of a restriction / or not this is? Are OTA updates common/regular/likely to add anything worthwhile (well, I guess cupcake was...but you probably all had that anyway)
Thanks, with a bit more research I finally stumbled on the solution.
Had to restore to crb17 from the link on the thread above, and then flash the original recovery in fastboot, then the OTA update to crb43 worked perfectly!
Phew!
I'll probably re-root sooner or later, can't help but play around on this device :0 so much more to play with than my iPhone he he
Apologies if this thread annoys anyone who says I should have searched better to start with, I did, and read many threads but theres a lot to take in!
Anyways, maybe someone else has same problem and this might have helped
and to make it easier for future searchers could you compile a detailed list of step-by-step instructions for doing this? Could be handy for a wiki somewhere
OK, will add details later, but briefly
To restore to factory:
1) Download and follow instructions to flash the crios spl (one with older version reported)
2) Download and follow included instructions to flash the SFR CRB17 image using included recovery.img (boot dont flash it)
3) Download and flash original recovery image (again from crios) can be found at thread linked earlier in this one.
Reboot, and go through usual setup etc OTA update will be on its way
Be sure to remove any update.zip from your SD before attempting ther OTA update, ie before first boot if possible
It's actually really easy now I know how, and took about 20min in total (probably less)
Where do you get the SFR CRB17?
