GUIDES thread in the Q&A section - General Topics

About a month ago, i started a thread for Guides to Common Issues in the Q&A section.
The thread has been viewed by a siginifcant amount of people since it was opened, so i'm assuming such a thread is needed.
I would like to invite all of you to post guides in that thread. It is opened to everyone and would appreciate additions. currently it has 17 guides..
Please, if you have a guide, concerning NON-specific device issues.. problems.. enhancments.. or anything else that can help people, post the guide in that thread. you can see the format of the guides in my guides and use it to post yours. I also made a list of all guides in the first post so if you decide to add a guide, pm me with the name of the guide so that i can add it to the first post. also, please MAKE SURE you add a title to the post so that searching for it is easy.
Don't by shy, if you have ANYTHING that can help people with COMMON issues regarding anything from information backup, skinning, networking, bluetooth or wifi issues, registry, mechanical issues, phone issues, memory... yada yada yada (and many more yadas)... please write a short guide and post it there. you'd be contributing to members who might've helped you in the past.
Also, if you would like to sharpen, or add to a guide created by another member, let me know and i'll take care of the update.
any clarifications needed can be point at me.
this thread, when gets massive enough, might relieve some of the questions asked and help people straight away without having to dive into piles of information.
Thank you

interesting idea for this forum

I just thought of this idea, and I really don't know how easy it is, and I have a feeling it just might work. With all the newbs that come in and don't read the wiki...don't read the rules, they post all these redundent threads. How about, in order to register to this forum, you have to take a test. This test will consist of certain questions from the wiki. I'm pretty sure this is a wild idea and getting this to work with this forum might be some work, but if it is done, I'm pretty sure this will reduce a lot of redundent threads. Of course, the test shouldn't be that hard if person read the wiki.
Just a crazy idea. Lock this thread if you think I'm insane.
edit: sorry, should say interesting idea for this forum, not thread.
Not a bad idea, needs some working out. To read the correct Wiki the first question would probably have to be "what phone do you own?"
I don't know about a test but maybe a period after you join you can read all the forums but cannot post for a set amount of days maybe. Thats just my 2 cents.
-McMex
its gonna be hard since a lot of us use different machines..its a good idea to somehow limit the noobness of these people posting redundent threads...but i guess it'll be hard to change the habits of those that just post rather than search
btw...i dont think this is kaiser rom development
maybe somehow mod the way we post...like have a label beside the "post" button asking if they hav searched or not and stuff like that so that the user can double check and think through before posting it..
just a thought...
maybe before someone can view the thread, there would be a pop-up menu (search thread menu) or something like that, that the user will be asked to input their querry and a list of links will be given for their easy access...hehe.
maybe we should not answer anything
and just say wiki
and thats it
nothing else
so that they will read the @@@@@@ wiki at last
another thought...maybe give like warning points or w/e...then after so many points u will have limited access or w/e then resulting in a ban if it continues to occur that they dont search answers for themselves first
wait doesn't the owners of this forum get paid more by having more threads from their advertisers?
idk i used to run a forum and thats how it worked with all our advertisers...
I think the purpose is not to piss people off by setting the rule to search first before you post, rather than preventing people to post. I don't think a test is a good idea because everyone has different learning capabilities.
i agree with the learning capabilities..but its the people who dont even want to learn...then just want other peple to give them the answer so they can happily enjoy their phone rather than learning it and finding it out for themselves...

agreed....
I'm with McMexican...
Probationary period of no posting for 7 days to familiarize yourself with the site, and read the WIKI(s).
Don't know why you guys playing the new ones. YOU WERE ALSO LIKE THEM!!!!
Another redundant thread.......
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=371254
I think we should have a separate wiki just on ideas 'cause there are so many of these now.
Now, to make my post related and not a space waster, how about this:
When somebody posts a new thread, after they hit "Submit reply", a script searches for keywords in their post and brings up a search result that might be related to their post. The poster can then ignore the posting if any of the search result is relevant or continue posting if search results are not relevant. To not make this feature an annoyance, the script only works when somebody's starting a new thread. How about that, eh?
I think every non-noob should hyper link "Wiki" or some other informative link in their signature. I think the more people that do that, the less redundancy will occur. just my two cents.

Meanwhile you have some user who has bricked his phone and can't post for 7 days, and doesn't understand the wiki and then starts to send PMs to all the names he sees on the forum.
Every forum has this problem. There's not much really that you can do about. Either ignore the redundant posts or help them out. Your choice.
The easiest and most fun way would be to have them agree to search first and be aware that Senior Members can and will ridicule, belittle and flame you if you post a redundant thread. Make that text BIG and BOLD then they check the I agree and can proceed with registration.
This reminds them of the rules and if they don't follow we can do what we do best, make fun of them, laugh, and maybe send them in the right direction.

Thread for Post Count
How about a thread, for users who make posts like this mine right now. It should be called "Increase your post count thread", this will serve posts like
1. Dumb noob questions (There usually have less than 10, so it will help them).
2. Posts to flame noob posts.
3. More Posts to follow up flaming.
4. More Posts that think this thread is more useful than a noob asking a stupid question because you can read and flash a phone.
5. Posts about how to make a perfect forum but not really do anything about it.
If I can think of more and don't have anything else to do with my life I will make my own thread with a big long list. Then ask for a sticky and be
While the ideas in this thread are good, as P1tater mentions, they are certainly not new.
I've come to an acceptance that there will always be someone who didn't take the time or effort to read before posting. Rather than thinking about different ways to force them, we should treat them with some amount of respect and either:
Giving the new user a search term (that we know will help), or
given the new user a way to navigate and use the resources here, mostly created by us to prevent users from asking questions in the first place
Both of these methods will teach the user how to properly use this site. A bit of chastisement never hurts, as long as one of the two criteria is met.
Since that thread was created two months ago, alot of things happened. Some notable mentions are:
Kaiser Software & ROM Development forum
G.W.E.N.I. links & Kaiser FAQ
Shipped & Cooked & Radio ROM wiki
Sticky Rollup & easier wiki navigation
Actions always speak louder than words and this forum runs on user contributions. If you're reading this thread now and wondering what you can do to assist the community:
The Kaiser FAQ needs work, converting GWENI links into Q/A, to be truly an FAQ.
New questions and answers are always appreciated too.
Cooked ROMS is outdated and needs regular maintenance.
Hope this helps!

Question???

Is it just me, or does it seem that there are more an more people posting things in the wrong section? For instance this thread was posted in the ROM Development section. Shouldn't it be in the Software section? It doesn't make sense to me. If people would take the time to read the wiki, the posting rules, and the Section Titles, then we wouldn't have such a chaotic mess on this forum. Is it possible to implement rules for new users requiring that the spend so many days just reading before they are able to make their first post?
I think its because some people see xda as a place to get quick answers, great roms, and nice apps.....but not interested in what this site is all about, as far as working with everyone, being disciplined enough to search first, ask for help second, and be respectful. Its just a sign of the times.....people want more but dont want to take simple steps to work within the guidelines.....just my 3 cents...
The Moderators move the thread that I mentioned in my original post to the appropriate section.
Does anyone else want to weigh in on this? If so, I will try to post a poll.
Yeh, you're right but it's not like you can tell them what to do and a poll isn't really necessary don't you think?
so what should we title this thread? the *****ing thread? it happens...it's the internet after all, as one of the prior posters had mentioned, people just act rude on the net because they can.... i just try and ignore them...

My, but that is a nuisance, isn't it? I know it's meant to keep newbies from cluttering up the dev forums with inane questions, but some of us do have valuable things to contribute to those forums despite being new to this particular site. Anyway, I have the same problem, but it's probably just a matter of time until I hit that magic limit, as you apparently did a couple posts ago.
Yea, But im no where near a noob. I work for U.S.Cellular and Im not asking ?`s and giving what I know about things and helping people.
You have to post more than 10 replies, then you can reply to "Rom related posts".
let me check which is this post i am posting
same problem here
This is insanely annoying, I am sought of new to the forums but have been installing roms and tweaks to android.for years. I.read those forums and can contribute a lot of stuff but aren't able to post yet. there are not many non-developer forums that have many things worth posting about.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
yep hopefully this works for me
I just find a general discussion, and add my 2c to it.
It adds up,
How about you all stop spamming and write something usefull...

Just write a PM to a mod, they will fix it.
can also bring with it a lot of spam so people hit the magic number......possibly like this post
The general situation is still acceptable since your case is rare.
$1 gets you a reply
I have the same problem ((
I also have the same problem, but I've read what the administrator of this forum said... "please do 10 posts to be able to post in other forums".
btw. this is post #9 for me, one more to go and I'm good to go.
Same here, only subscribed to thank the dev of the rom i'm using, but i can't thank his post untill i reach the number of 10 posts
I will post

this was right
Is 10 posts the magic limit?
I would like to be able to post to try to resolve some of my issues, but I'm also trying to answer questions in the meantime so.... whatever.
Well to add some sense to this:
I have the same problem, but I do have more then 10 posts.. This kinda bugs me since I'm pretty experienced and I have a question, which I can't post now..
EDIT
Allright for some reason now I can post. Ignore this post please, maybe I was a bit to impatient.

10 posts restriction

Hi, I know that the 10 posts restriction is necessary to keep new users from spamming and that's OK, but sometimes it isn't as useful. I have been an XDA user for more than a year now or event two, I'm not a developer so most of the times I have nothing to contribute, and I'm an experienced Android user so I don't usually have something to ask for, when I do post something or try to post is because there is a bug or some fix on some ROM that I'm using or that I know of, but I can't because most of the ROMs all in a development forums. My point is that it would be much better if XDA had a system which takes into consideration how many years have you been visiting the forums and if you are trying to reply in a thread instead of creating one.
I'm sure that a lot of users like me would appreciate it.
Please use search before posting duplicate comments and/or questions...
Several links about this already...here is one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/about-xda/10-post-minimum-to-post-develop-forum-t2842036
Alos, please read this guide to help you get started on XDA, and this guide as well regarding post counts and development as this information is for new/junior members such as yourself and should answer most, if not all, questions you may have.

[Completed] [Q] How do I get to 10 posts, Without looking like I'm spamming?

I have a bug/problem with Oblytile v0.9.9, However I cannot post in the obly tile thread due to the 10 post requirement. My issue with it is that tiles refuse to show up, at all. They get properly made (as in the files exist, etc) but they do not show at all.
Thanks,
TGiFallen
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The best thing you can do is ask legitimate questions and take this time to learn more about your device. Don't spam the threads. If a moderator notices they will bring your post count back to 0. I'm going to let this one slide, but don't do it again. Also, see if this helps you, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1899865
I get the overwhelming feeling that you read my Thread title, then replied, without even bothering to read the post body.
I do have a legitimate issue, and I did post a legitimate question. Unfortunately I am unable to provide more details because of the bug's nature. It does not give me debug information, does not show tiles with errors, it just simply does not show them at all.
I understand that with such a large community that a large percent of new users are either bots, spammers or idiots, however I like to think I am none of those. Of course I searched the oblytile thread for any indications of other people having my bug, and any possible fixes, though I came up nil, thus I had to create an account. In fact the more I read your reply the more sure I am that you did not even read my post body. This has nothing in relation to my phone. Thanks though.

Hello,
As @jd1639 pointed out spamming and swearing indicated by the "****" from your above post (which I deleted) will get the post deleted.
As he also suggested posting legitimate questions or helping others will get your post count up.
Thanks,

@TGiFallen,
The rules outlined for the site are pretty clear. The 10 post requirement is in place for spam and bot related reasons as you know.
Rather than attempt to circumvent the rules/system, you should take a moment to browse through the other Q&A threads for your device. You can post there and also in the General Sections for your device. Simple things such as talking about your device or joining in a conversation can rack that post count up pretty quick.
Going on a spam spree will only serve to be counter productive for you and get your IP banned so take heed of the warning signs put before you.
I will be closing this thread now as it no longer serves a purpose. I hope you understand the minimum standard set for each user on this site and I thank you in advance for your cooperation.
