I finally was able to get my Moto Q to share the internet with my computer. Here's how. I went to sprint.com/download. Clicked on smart phones. Clicked on Moto Q. Downloaded Microsoft ActiveSync. Pluged the Moto Q into the laptop via the USB port. Presto! Online with very good speed.
The Sprint store manager was under the impression that this internet sharing capability is not included in my plan. But by reading other posts on other sites, I tend to believe that this is completely free and included in any plan, as long as the phone has internet capability.
This is not using a phone as a modem plan, this is the internet sharing option on the homepage of the Moto Q.
Therefore, from what I read, there is no way for Sprint to know or track this activity to charge a user. Anyone have any thoughts?
If this is in fact free, this a homerun for my mobile office and my daily business activity. I am psyched! Cheers!
what you did is not "Internet Sharing" it is a default feature of activesync when connecting your device to your PC
you can also using wireless internet sharing using a specific application of windows mobile which will use your plan.
sprint has NOTHING to do with your device other than the data plan (and phone features of course).
Not Internet Sharing?
That's strange. The icon on the MOTO Q homescreen says "Internet Sharing".

I purchased the tether feature through ATT and had it working with the ATT ROM because there was a MODEM or something icon in my connections program group.
With the HTC ROM I don't see that? How do I setup to tether using the HTC ROM?
Thanks

DUH, thanks that was easy.
Um, it would seem that I don't have to use the dial-up options like I did with the ATT ROM. Does this mean they can't track whether my data is being used for my phone or my computer therefore not needing to pay extra to "tether"?
Thanks
I just have the $40 unlimted pda connect plan and I have been using ICS for over a year now with now problems with cingular now AT&T
OK, so just got off the phone with att rep. Explained to me that I had the ENTERPRISE PDA w/TETHER (we looked at the chart together online) and told me that ENTERPRISE packages meant I could get my business's e-mail included for free. She didn't really know what that meant exactly so I was like "you mean have exchange server e-mail forwarded to my PDA?" she said- yeah something like that.
SO, I was like, what about this PDA PERSONAL MAX plan. She said it's still unlimited data, with 1500 text messages (which was NOT included in the PDA ENTERPRISE plan) and minus the business e-mail account forwarding (whatever that is)...
SO she switched me to the non-tethering PDA PERSONAL MAX $39.99 unlimited data, 1500 messages.
If I use connection sharing as described above I should be good to go right? It's a non-dial connection so I don't see how they ever could trace it.
It's amazing how little ATT reps (including the store rep that set me up with the $59.99 plan) know about these data plans. They are horribly ambiguous. A crime if you ask me.
Thanks for your help. I'll try using the connection sharing over the next month and see if it does anything crazy to my bill...

Did you ever confirm whether AT&T could track our usage? I used to use PDANet for tethering, but PDANet doesn't work with WM6. They indicated that they don't have any immediate plans to accommodate WM6 users. Unless you guys and gals have heard differently.
Works great
Hello guys,
works great ! As soon as I understood that I needed to set up a Network pairing on my PC first...
YES !
Thanks guys

I work for At&t myself and they are not tracking whether or not the usage came from your phone or computer they are just tracking the usage itself. They know how much usage a phone is capable of doing in a month and if your going over that then they know your doing something your not supposed to and can actually terminate your service.

Doing something your not supposed to do? What would that be?
I have never tethered to a PC. My device usage last month was nearly 7GB. I am sure most of the usage was streaming video (live TV) and video podcast downloads. All content was viewed exclusively on the Tilt, much in real time.
"Connecting me to my world"
I have a PDA Max plan at 39.99 a month with 1500 text messages and unlimited data, and I tether via internet sharing just fine.
DONT pay ATT for the Tethering plan, as you can do this all for free.
homer, you're right the rep didn't know much about data plans, media max plans are technically for non-pda phones. If you need to tether, I wouldn't download too much. I can see at&t eventually trying to change people from the 39.99 data and text plan if they have a pda. I don't even get 3g where I live, so 39.99 is the most I'd pay.
According to AT&T's official data policy, any users transmitting over 5GB/mo on their network run the risk of being "monitored" for potential abuse. If you frequently tether (which I do), just be careful not to exceed 5GB/mo more than 3 months in a row.
AT&T does not track whether a person is tethering via USB/Bluetooth, or just browsing the net and downloading a sh*t-ton of data directly on the phone. However, they can tell if your data is being used for their internal services such as AT&T TV and the like.
In true Wikipedia form, here's my reference for the 5GB limit. ComputerWorld.com
Does anyone know if the PDAMax limits your ability to use isp.cingular as opposed to wap.cingular; or is in anyway more limited than the PDA Connect Unlimited plan that I've been holding onto?
Hello PDAnet 2.0 does indeed work with wm6. I have it for both my 8525 and my 8925. It works just great.

also, while setting up your phone for connection thro a usb, go to "network and sharing center" > "local area connection" (the one from your kaiser) >> properties >> CHECK everything (sharing, ipv6, ipv4.. ) . no other changes needed (no need to disable usb on your laptop or kaiser, no need to disable 'advanced network functionality' under usb to pc. just enable internet sharing from comm manager and it works.
Hi my name is jacob and I am a new on XDA and i have started a new thread because I have been all over the internet looking for a solution to this problem and none of them work. After i waved through all of the b******* i decided to come and see if any of you veterans can solve my problem.
i have been messing around with root and custom roms here recently maybe for a month and so far its great breathed new life into my old phone. Although I am having trouble with hacking my mobile phones hot spot (phone specifications and model listed below) i have tried everything wifi tether by TreVe, (hope I'm typing that right) changing tethering.dun in global settings database, (worked great until T-mobile eventually found me out) and everything else related to that. I am looking for a hack into my hot spot where T-mobile wont know s*** and it will work indefinitely. Reason why is I need internet for school and work purposes at home but, I live with my father and hes is on parole and can not have internet service at his home. I am a beginner but do have a little bit of sense in what I am doing if someone would kindly walk me through steps on how to completely unlock and hide my hot spot usage from T-mobile it would be greatly appreciated.
Also new thread for hacking native hot spot methods on any rooted android device.
My phone
Samsung Galaxy S2
carrier: T-mobile
model: SGH-T989 Hercules
no custom kernel (I understand I need some kind of net filter but can not find that online)
custom rom version: carbon 4.4.2 nightly
Thanks XDA community :good:
It won't be wireless, but PdaNet+ and USB tethering works just fine with a computer as long as you select the "hide tether usage" option. The program on the computer side also has a feature that turns your computer's wi-fi into a wi-fi router, which'll allow you to connect other devices.

yes i have tried PDAnet and that does not work for my needs as i also play the occasional online game with my PS4 I forgot to mention that sorry. I have tried to send out a wifi signal from my computer through CMD on my computer and none of my devices pick it up even though CMD says the signal is going out also done this with ADhoc networks with a LAN cable but did not work either. Thanks for the suggestion :good: I probably should have went into more detail with my post but I did not want to make it to terribly long sorry.

May it possibly hide my online gaming if I figure out a way to get reverse WiFi on my computer working will it still hide that or will it be detectable. I see my self as a somewhat computer buff but I put myself to shame when i cant get a reverse WiFi connection going from my computer. seems like a lot of trouble to go to for internet i wish there was a way to unlock native tethering and not jump through hoops. It would seem that it would be a simple fix and should also be free anyway since it is dealt with the phone's hardware not through the carrier american cell network providers are greedy that is like getting xfinity internet but before you can send internet to your devices you have to pay thirty dollars extra.
When you USB tether your phone to your computer with PdaNet+, all you have to do is select the "WiFi Share" option and set it up like any other hotspot (network name, password, etc). Couldn't be easier. I don't know how well this'll work for playing PS4 (or whatever) games, but I can use this setup to watch Netflix or youtube on my well enough.
There are ways to use the native hotspot on an Android phone, but all the "hacks" are done on the computer side. VPNs, browser masking, etc.

Method not working i still get the T-mobile up sell page through VPN's of all kind it masks the internet going through the computer but not the phone where the service originates. They still detect everything I am doing. I understand T-mobile has bots going through their lines that detects devices that are not mobile devices and shuts them down. If maybe there is a way to block T-mo completely from a mobile device and just sounds ridiculous but I know someone out there can find a way I have heard of peoples mobile data usage and their mobile hot spot gauge has not moved only mobile data was detected. I am not sure if this was false statements and was made up.

Hi Jacob, I got my Note 3's native personal wifi hotspot connected to my ps4 with around 18Mbps Download and 6Mbps Upload, I adjusted the APN settings on my phone and managed to get around the data restriction.
I can post the exact settings I changed if you think it might work for you?
Howdy ho!
I believe I have a question that many users here and/or in other forums were trying to ask, but failed to ask properly and got an irrelevant answer. I will try to be honest and clear as possible and hope there is a solution.
What do I have:
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running Android version 7 with unlimited data plan and 15GB mobile hotspot data, a smart TV and a laptop.
What do I need:
Watch videos and surf internet on my PC monitor or bigscreen TV using my phone's unlimited plan.
The problem:
15GB mobile hotspot data aint enough to run my PC. A few Windows updates and one online game update a month about 1-6GB each( I have no clue why game makers have to push huge updates every month, like Guild Wars 2 for example or Eve Online, or simply starting Steam ) tears my mobile data plan apart, and where I live the satellite or dial-up are only means of getting internet, which aren't acceptable. due to lag and download threshold.
The workaround I tried:
Currently I have my laptop connected to TV via HDMA and by sharing my mobile hotspot able to stream YouTube and surf internet, but once 15GB hotspot data is exhausted, speeds drop down to crawling 0.80kbs instead of 4G as a punishment for going over.
So I got the Chromecast device, which is inserted into TV's HDMA port and supposed to connect with smartphone via wifi, but it appeared to me that I am required to establish a connection with another phone or device that is sharing mobile hotspot data or some kind of wifi internet and then Chromecast device can tap into it, which beats the purpose. Why can't my smartphone stream its display content directly to Chrome cast to be displayed on TV/monitor ?
The question:
Is there a microusb to HDMA converter that does not require MHL enabled device (almost all Galaxy Note models have it except Note 5 for some aggravating reason ) ?
Is there another way to connect a big screen to a smartphone to watch videos without burning precious mobile hotspot data?
Why can't I plugin microusb to USB cable from my phone into PC and use it as a mobile network card/router?
Is there a chance for an app that could resolve my issue or am I stuck burning mobile data with my hands behind my back just because mobile internet providers love to sell air?
Thanks in advance and apologize for any negativity, I really feel defeated by getting Note 5 instead of Note 3 which is MHL enabled, but isn't and option for a trade-in...
As of midnight March 1st 2018 PdaNet+ seems to be blocked for users of Boost Mobile for the mobile hotspot feature. My girlfriend said that the hotspot quit working last night at midnight. When I got home I checked with both her device and my own and both now send you to the login page of boost mobile. I was able to work around it, by using the usb tether option in pda net. Then after connecting the phone to my windows 10 pc (tethered) I enabled the built in windows hotspot. To be clear the hotspot within the pdanet windows application did not seem to work. I am wanting to get feedback on if others are having the same issue. The two devices that I have that are affected are an LG Xpower and an LG Stylo 2. Also note that the USB tether option is not as fast as the hotspot option, so this is a major letdown since this is my only internet...
Pdanet
Yes, having the same issue with Pdanet and Boost Mobile. So frustrating since I don't have other internet options right now. Have you heard of any other apps that will work with Boost?
These maybe helpful.

or

Strange, I use Boost and around that same time Utorrent (tried Vuze and Bitlord too) lost their ability to connect to peers via my USB tether or Bluetooth. They would work with my hotspot but PDA has always been restricted by my monthly hotspot data cap (not sure if that's a universal thing) so I'll have to wait a few more days before I know if that's been cut off too.
My VPN (private internet access) stopped working as well. It gets to 'authenticating' and wont go any further.
Im not using a app, im using a custom rom, Wicked X and i an confirm my hotspot is not working right either. its unlimited plan but now it has a 8GB hotspot add on when that was never there. it appeared on March 5th for me.
When the 8GB is up i can only access internet on my desktop, and my tablet. nothing else. and my desktop, torrents and steam downloads dont connect and just sit there at 0.
My friend has stock rom with the mobile hotspot limit bypass through sqlite editor and his did the same thing mine did but a few days prior to me.
Im wondering if this has to do with Net Neutrality being Repealed.
Also phone i am using is
Samsung Galaxy S3 L710
His phone is
Samsung Galaxy S4 L720T
I'm having the same problems with all my devices lg stylo rooted on 5.1.1 and lg g3 rooted on 5.0.
Seams to me that Sprint/Boost mobile have caught up with us leaving us S.O.L.
I'm just about fed up with boost mobile and considering moving to Cricket or Metro. ?
use fox fi 2.19

Yes I am have the same from at&t has my hot spot blocked I paid for the unlimited plan but obviously it is limited they can control my phone
Boost Mobile hotspot - whether your paying for it or not(this works on several carriers including AT&T, Cricket, MetroPCS, be careful on tmobile), get pdanet, or use wifi direct built in if you can, on the device you want internet on either use pdanet to connect or manually connect.
Connecting Manually
--------------------------
go to WiFi settings connect to the direct-whatever-phone-name, go to wifi settings if it doesnt show options to change proxy settings and click to change proxy to manual make sure to tick the option if its there to use for all connections
proxy - 192.168.49.1
port - 8000
PdaNET+ & Boost Mobile
----------
using p2p/torrent will use your hotspot data and when you run out no more though, trying to find a way around this btw(if anyone knows msg me pls.)
using regular web doesnt use hotspot data
Cricket/AT&T
----------------
so far unlimited use, torrent or not
MetroPCS
------------
so far as far as i can tell unlimited, just make sure to hide tether usage in pdanet
T-Mobile LG Velvet 5G [LMG900TM]
Android 11 [LMG900TM20G]
Carrier Unlocked
Rooted with Magisk
Service by Metro by T-Mobile
T-Mobile APN
---------------------
Straight to the point: I rooted this device in order to unlock the hotspot, run VPN Hotspot app, to serve data to my home network. However, the VPN app will not connect to servers. Without being connected to VPN, it will not serve data to other devices (for some reason, as using VPN should be optional).
The same setup works just fine on my old device, using the same rooting process, apps/VPN, sim, APN, and plan thru Metro.
---------------------
After trying several VPNs, I was able to connect using ProtonVPN free. If memory serves me correctly, it was able to connect using OpenVPN TCP protocol.
But, I'm not wanting to eat my current VPN subscription, and pay for a new one elsewhere.
My typical VPN will connect to servers when connected to WiFi. Just not over the T-Mobile network on this device.
ive tried switching APN to use only IPv4 for regular and roaming connections. Same results. On my other device, there was no problems with VPN connections using standard APN with IPv4/IPv5 selected
Also worth noting that the hotspot will activate, but will not pass any data thru without being connected to (proton) VPN. On other devices, using the same service provider, settings, and methods, hotspot works with or without tunneling thru a VPN connection.
The only use of VPN Hotspot app is to force tethered data thru the VPN tunnel, but not necessary to use data over the stock android hotspot.
---------------------
To summarize, I suspect the inability to pass data over hotspot and/or connect to VPN is rooted in either
Bug in the android 11 ...20G rom
Shenanigans with T-Mobile baking in roadblocks to prevent sharing data without paying and preventing VPN connections on their devices when using their network
The problem has me stumped because the T-Mobile network gives me no problems on my old carrier-free device using this exact setup, settings, options, etc. Kinda rules out the service provider being the problem.
I'm leaning toward this being something T-Mobile baked into the rom to prevent unauthorized data sharing from their devices, despite it being carrier unlocked. I say this because the stock hotspot won't pass data with a direct connection unless you have a VPN connected. VPN has no problem connecting via WiFi. Seems like T-Mobile may be blocking VPN connections on their network when using one of their devices
Or, could just be a bug in the LG system
----------------------------
At this point, i've transferred service back to my old device (I'm using the hotspot data right now). Figure I'll just toss this Velvet in the phone drawer or sell it, since it won't do what I need it to do. Shame really, cause it's a nice device. Waste of $150+ tho
FWIW the old device is a el cheapo Umidigi A7 Pro I picked up last year for $100. It runs a nearly barebones build of android 10. For the money, I can't complain. It's been dropped, ran over, left outside overnight in the rain. Still ticking.
I live out in the sticks. Only other ISP option is hughesnet satellite (which is practically unusable and expensive). I pick up a couple bars on T-Mobile with my phone in the window. Run hotspot on the device. I have a dd wrt router set as a repeater bridge that connects to the hotspot. Devices in my home connect to the repeater. This allows me to use Chromecast, and all apps function properly (messengers, push notices, etc). Works just like a 'real' internet connection. Decent ping, albeit only pulls down a few megs per second. Still leaps and bounds over sat connection. And I'm paying for the phone anyway, so saves on monthly bills.
