Root help please. - G1 Android Development

Out of curiosity, does having root only enable all the stuff we can do to the phone, like boot screens, themes, etc.
or...
is there actually a way to navigate all the files on the SD card and phone from the terminal (on the phone). Because I see some phone screenshots with SD card folders on the home screen. How can I do this?
(Root and Folders on the home screen probobly have nothing to do with eachother.)
Sorry for the noob question
thanks in advance for your replies.

[Q] Weird problem upgrading to froyo... please help >.<

Alright so Ive been searching for posts on this and trying to figure this out for hours and Im almost fed up. Ive tried multiple different ways of downloading and extracting the froyo/super oneclick and have multiple different problems. The latest problem Ive had is I can get the root, and nandroid folders into my sd card while the usb connection, then when i switch to porta and tools the files wont be in my sd card anymore. Other problems Ive ran into are my computer wont be able to read the open recovery and therefor wont put it into my sd card... Ive tried unzipping the file into my sd card, on the the desktop, ect. Ive also tried just downloading the .zip file strait to the desktop an dragging and dropping into my sd card, and nothing works...
Can someone PLEASE tell me where im going wrong? And maybe send me in the right direction?

You need to have usb debugging checked in settings/development I think. Then while plugged in switch to portal and tools and run superoneclick from your pc not from your sdcard to root. You won't see the root of your sdcard while in portal and tools
Have you watched my videos?

Be sure not to forget about the USB debugging. It is something so simple, but easy to forget.
For your root problem, download Universal Androot apk and put it on your SD card. Use some file mgr and install. Click root and woot you're done and rooted.
For open recovery issue, you need to make sure phone is USB debugged and in mass storage mode. Unzip OR and put contents on SD card ( you'll need a folder called openrecovery and another named nandroid-zip contents go in openrecovery folder and when you make a back up, they will populate into the nandroid folder), but also put openrecovery.zip on card.
+1 on Rev's bids. Very helpful to familiarize yourself with proper partitions and basic Linux.
Yeah rev I was using your video watching it over and over lmao and I would make one dumb little simple mistake here or there... but I finally got it. And thanks to the other answer as well guys.
Now, is there a way to make my status bar black or is that out of the question?

You can use Metamorph or Zip Themer (both in market for free) to change you status bar or other things. Make a nandroid first and if you find that you really don't like what you have done, just restore the System part of the nandroid and you are back to the original you had.
Metamorph will work if you want to change 1 or 2 or 3 things but will require a reboot after all three. With Zip Themer you can create a whole package and apply it that way. I can't get it to work right but that is my own issue and not something wrong with the program. 3rdstring has a nice theme going over on the Themes and Apps forum if you want to take a look.
Hit those thanks buttons if anything helps you out and good luck.

Can't see zips on sd card in CWM

I have something all out of whack here .... I have been flashing different ROMs ... gone all the way back to stock ee4 and moved forward. I can install rooted roms and I have root. I can open Titanium and freeze appz and such. My tethering app gets granted su permissions with su popping up asking to allow and so forth. But when I go into CWM recovery, none of the zips on my sd card show up!! I put the sd card into a reader on my desktop and verify the files are on the root of the sd card but I can't see them in recovery !!
Any help greatly appreciated. I'm willing to do whatever I have to do to the phone !!
Thanx In Advance for Any Help
Steve
EDIT: All of this because I couldn't get the browser to work on Danalo's All In One while on WIFI home network. Browser works on 3g but not WIFI ... network is good, wife's moto droid works fine on wifi ...
I'd like to go back to Imnuts' Infinity ROM but I can't see the zip !!!
I can put the zips in a folder on the sd card I created and I can see them in recovery. Just can't see them on the root level of the card ...
Have you tried different programs to actual zip the file, is it getting named file.zip.zip? Sometimes you just name a file depending on the program and it adds .zip to it so it would be file.zip.zip.
I see what you are saying didnt work for me hang on I have 2 ideas. Rename it as an update.zip file and make sure its not update.zip.zip or use root explorer to move the file into a folder that you see in root level such as data. Ok worked for me I moved the file with root explorer to android/data on the sdcard reboot into recovery and see it. Maybe Im not understanding what you are trying to do.

I've never had an issue before seeing zip files at the root level. I mistakenly mounted system during all of the flashing I've done. Had trouble with other versions of un-mounting system but in the end got that back to original. But I don't see the (properly named) zip files at the root level on the phone. Yes, I can see them when moved into another folder but the ones that are there at root level of the sd card are not seen.
I was under the impression that to install a ROM like Imnuts' Infinity, it had to be executed from the root level of sd card and not from within a folder?
My guess is you have so many folders in your sdcard that you can't see it. Try scrolling alllll the way down. I think you'll see it.
The same thing happened to me. I thought I was losing my mind

OOPS !!! You nailed it and don't I just feel like a dumb di** !
It was driving me nutz last night !! Reckon it's time to clean up the old sd card
That's one of the reasons why I put the CWM ZIP files into a folder where all of them reside. I called it "ROMs", you may name it differently than I do. Say "CWMStuff" so that it hopefully will stay near the top of the file list.
I actually have a folder already there 'charge_zips' .... appreciate the thought that put me onto it ... sometimes you do so much you miss the obvious, right?
hahahaha.....amazing, was driving me crazy as well!!! the zip was right at the bottom!

SD Card Cleanup

Hello together
i searching for a way to hold my sd card clean.
on the root of the sd card are all folders from installed aps or system thinks... i search for a way to install all system apps and files in a subfolder to hold the root of the sd clean
any sollution to do this?
Easiest thing is to put the SD card into your PC, delete the folders you don't want and then put it back in the phone and boot up - it'll put the folders it HAS to have back on and the rest stay gone (until you use an app again that adds a folder)

[Q] Urgent - need help with an issue on my xoom.

Previously I was using cm9, after that I upgraded to cm10. I wiped data, wiped cache in cwm recovery.
After that, I tried xfering some files over to my tab, it looked like this
i. imgur.com/T3LAU.png
From this picture, it can be seen that my internal memory has files and is not empty
yet when I enter the folder
i. imgur.com/Mn7lR.png
Completely empty, cant be seen.
Even after trying to copy and paste files in, only the new files appear, can no longer find my old files.
Can anybody help me? same thing for the SD card. SD card only detected when I removed and plugged in with external usb card reader to my pc.
(I can't post images yet, hopefully someone with >10 posts can hotlink it for me).
Really urgent because I have to use it for my lecture notes in school.
If you want a workaround on this issue, you can use a cloud storage app. For example, dropbox (go to my signature and click the dropbox logo) can allow you to transfer files without even plugging your Xoom into your computer
Managed to solve the issue by doing a complete memory wipe on my internal hard disk but backing up important files before hand w dropbox as the files are still accessible with astro.
No idea how this happened though.
It's called MTP. Hahahaha in other words windows sucks.
Really what happens is the file list directory isn't updated so it doesn't show up on explorer. I don't even use explorer, I just use ADB push or pull.

[Q] HELP! Goophone i5 with damaged SD card

I have a problem with a goophone i5. First I had problems with it not having a signal but that got solved. Now a second problem came up. I plugged the phone in the laptop, clicked on 'turn on usb', after a while I clicked the 'turn off usb' on the phone. It was off, I unplugged and then it gave a warning "not safely removed, sd damaged", while it was safely removed! Now I can't do anything with it like download apps to it etc. It keeps giving that memory is full. So I assume the 8GB is damaged. I have no idea how to fix it, since I searched already, but it's not like I can take the 8GB out, since it's not removable. Do you know a solution or can you help me? Thank you in advance. When I plug the phone the card is just unrecognisable, therefore I can't format it in anyway :crying:

Hi mate!
You have there a problem! First of all goophone do not come with 8GB sd card storage. There are 2 different options: the 16GB and 32 GB so, first of all, try to see if you have a real goophone i5.
Then, there is a way to format the SD card. For that you must buy a Screw Driver to open it. After that take out the screws, pull up the display and you will see the sd card inside. Just unplug it, put it on a SD card Adapter and format it on your desktop.
It can give you SD card Damage for a few times, but ignore it and keep formating it until the warning disapears.
For the screw driver you just need to search on ebay. They are very cheap. So all you have to do is to buy one.
Hope this information helped you out.
Regards
Loren can I ask how you got a signal? I just have no service at top of screen. Driving me nuts,

Is there a trick to getting the glass to pull up? I've taken out the screws, and put the suction cup down near the home button, but when I pull the glass wants to separate from the bracket that holds it to the phone. There is a tearing sound, like adhesive giving away, and it's fighting me. I don't want to pull any harder for fear that I'm going to damage it.
The reason I'm doing this, is that my SD card has also died, and is no longer recognized by the phone, and I'm wanting to replace it.

Can't this help? :got this from android website: ((((( I have been fighting this issue for 6 months, off and on. Used to think it was the SD Cards, but have concluded its got to be software. I used different methods to fix it, but over trial and error I think I found the easiest way.
Reboot into Recovery, go to advanced options. Select to mount via USB, then connect to a pc. May take a few times plugging in and out, till you get the sd card drive to appear on your pc. Once you get it, back out of usb mount. Disconnect the cord, and verify your sd card is mounted. I just go into the install a zip from sd card option, if I see files/folders I know its mounted. back up and select the restart device.
This method I stumbled on, in my efforts to just try and get my phone back. After I made the mistake of formating everything includeing the boot, and other internal components. Was pure luck, but it works. I know now it wasn't the format of the SD Card nor the sd card itself, cause I have tried several. Also used to think it was the file system, cause I used to get the cards working again by formating and then pasteing saved files/folders from an earlier back up. Also have factoy reset many times, that doesn't fix it, and reflashing a ROM sometimes does appear to work, but I think its because of restucture of the file system during that process. Anyway let me know if this helped you.))))
I have same problem with SD card, but I think it is not really broke but rather software problem.
I want to fix problem without removing screen or anything, can anyone help?
I have the Chinese recovery installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't help.
Got exactly the same problem.. and this is what I have found out so far
If you go to mnt folder using programs like root explorer or rom tool box you will notice 2 folder.. 1st called sdcard which is your internal card and sdcard2 which is the external card
under scard card there are some letters which indicate the permission level it has but under sdcard2 it only shows -----, I manually changed the permission for sdcard 2 (normally long click on the folder name and select permission from the menu) once I done that the external sdcard started to work fine, however when I reboot the phone the sdcard2 lose the permission again
Also, I contacted the guy who I bought the phone from (efit) who told me to open the phone and take the sdcard out and then put it in again and that should make it work, I managed to remove the screen off (not really sure but I think the 2 screws beside the lightning connector is for decoration only).. as you can see from the phone there is no way to access the sd card (unless I did something wrong here)
I contacted efit asking him for some instructions on how to open the phone but I couldn't find the sd card and now he is telling because I opened the phone myself I lost the warranty... what a scum bag !!!
tried the mount to usb thing but that didn't work..
hopefully will find a solution soon
Thanks for this, I almost opened my phone for nothing.
I went to a store to get it open but one of the screws would not come lose, so they didn't try further.
Stupid problem with SD, hope someone will find solution soon.
But you managed to get it working until reboot?
With my phone in mnt folder: sdcard has no permissions and sdcard2 has ---rwxr-x as permission.
What should I change there?
Thanks
ciao

Do you have manuxo rom or pure ICS installed on the phone because I've noticed that with manuxo rom sdcard2 have no permission but with pure ICS sdcard is the one with no permission.. which I thought it's a bit strange
I have asked before in this forum if anyone with working sdcard to share what permission they have but no one answered !

I Installed the Manuxo rom v1.28, sd card problem happened week later.
I installed like viber, skype, whatsapp, facebook, soundcloud, simpsons tapped out, angry birds and all that stuff on phone, transferred to sd.
And just all of a sudden, when phone was lying there, it gave error, I rebooted and I lost everything..
But I can still see the fotos on sd card2 through file explorer. Weird stuff.
OK, let's wait for answers of other users I guess.
I also mailed to androidsale what to do, he said try to pull it out and try it a few times, maybe not good connected with sd slot pin, but I can't believe that because phone still finds SD in ROM TOOL lite.
Thanks for your time and effort in this problem!!

Hello, I have the same problem with my goophone i5 v88 I can't mount the sd card (16GB)
I have try to remove my screen but I have the same problem I can't found the sd card (just my sim card...)
Adb shell
you can connect the phone to pc and use adb available with mtk droid tools to force format the sdcard.
Adb shell
Fdisk (search google for how to use fdisk)
If the phone is rooted and has cwm you can format sdcard via cwm.

But I am a noob and don''t know how to do it all, first adb is installed and made available.
Then I installed mtk droid tools. It gives this in info :Free space: system- 251M; data- 153M; sdcard2- 1G; C:\ 75544M
But I don't know how to format now.
Do I have to enter a command in the adb terminal?
Do I have to combine Fdisk and adb shell?
I's not rooted cwm with me, its the chinese recovery from Mayiaandjay from youtube.
Many thanx for the help, almost was going to use it as a picture frame
I do not have access to my PC right now but...
On the right of MTK Droid Tools there are 3 buttons "Root" "ADB Terminal" "Reboot"
Root the phone by pressing "Root", and follow instructions...
Pres "ADB Terminal" to enter Windows command shell, type "adb shell" (without the quotes) to enter the phone shell. Next type fdisk then "enter" and see what comes up...
type "mount" also to find out where your sdcard mounted...
Then search with Google for how to format sdcard...

This is where I got.:
How can I mount or unmount the SD Card using ADB?
The sdcard can be umounted by using the umount command.
unmount /mtn/sdcard/.android_secure
how can it be remounted again :
mount /mnt/sdcard/.android_secure
.
Type mount sdcard next to the "#" sign & press enter...
You will need to know the mount point also if you intend to mount the external card.
As an example:
su mount -o bind /mnt/emmc /sdcard/external_sd
.....................
Like this? And I need to write sdcard2 instead of sdcard I guess?
or this:
First, on your phone, go into Home -> Settings -> SD card & phone storage, then click on "Unmount SD card"
Then, in your shell, do the following.
Code:
adb shell
mkfs.vfat /dev/block//vold/179:1
Then go back to the phone and mount the SD card again. Of course, it would probably be easier to just click "Format SD card," rather than going through adb.
.....
Difficult, don't want to brick my phone..
Many thanks
