*Guide* - view other languages on the G1 - G1 Android Development

first of all i would like to thank this forum and it's members, you have been a great source of G1 info for me, and i want to give something back .
this is a guide for installing fonts which will enable you to get rid of the annoying while boxes when you try reading something in a foreign language such as:
web pages
contacts
pretty much everything else
note that it does not alter your current English font, so no worries about font size not fitting buttons, etc.
this, of course, requires root access.
I haven't been able to find a comprehensive and full guide, so i made one:
1) download the DeJaVu fonts from here, they are freely licensed (so no worry about copyrights).
2) copy 'DejaVuSans.ttf' to your sdcard and rename it exactly 'DroidSansFallback.ttf'
3) start terminal emulator and type exactly (watch the Case) the following commands, followed by enter:
Code:
su (then wait for the superuser screen and press yes)
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
reboot
your phone will now reboot, and vualla! you have your native language displayed! no more white boxes! Ha Ha Ha!!
note: if the dejavu fonts don't support your language, just find a font that does, and follow exactly the same procedure.
hope this helps someone, because I sure needed it...
cheers!
note: you might want to make this a sticky

yes it will, enjoy
aacshar, try redoing it all over again, you probably mistyped some letter...
i have tried this several times and works like a charm, i am running jf1.41 RC33 also

Why can't JF put this in his releases, as a default font? I know that future android releases support locales, etc.... but why can't JF replace his release with this one so we don't have to redo this every time?
Thanks

Something went wrong, now "su" wont work, only flash black, then denied or something???
What now???
Trying to flash again, don`t want to wipe...

But no help my fonts

This will work for Arabic but the letters will be disconnected. I wrote about that solution in my blog a month ago:
http://dumpytips.blogspot.com/2009/01/arabic-on-t-mobile-g1half-solution.html
Read the comments if you are interested, we had an interesting discussion in there.

I second the motion, JesusFreke - what do you say?

why not?

Success
This works great thank you!
Edit - Now that this is working, we must ask how can we undo these changes? - Thanks!

you need to get hold of the original file, either by someone sending it to you, or by getting it out of an image.
these instructions just copy a file over an existing file, so use the same instructions again for the original font file.
JesusFreke: It would aid us all not native English speakers if you added this to your ROM. this is after all a feature. thanks

Thank you for your instruction. It's exactly what I need.
But my question is DejaVu Sans font comprises of 4 style: regular, italic, bold, bold-italic. The font has 4 files:
DejaVuSans.ttf
DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf
DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf
DejaVuSans-BoldOblique.ttf
Why your instruction only use DejaVuSans.ttf file ? What if text in web page has italic, bold or bold-italic, how will it be displayed ?
Nathan Tran

I figured it out. Android will use DroidSansFallback.ttf for anything that it cannot display.

Just one question. So if I install someone's rom that doesn't have polish locale in it, all I have to do is to -dd this font file and I will have polish language in my phone? Or is it just for web browsing? Thanks in advance for any reply.

Terminal means command prompt in Windows.
1. go to command prompt (window + R , type cmd , press enter)
2. cd to your androidsdk/tools/ (cd C:\AndroidSDK\tools\)
3. type this without quotes 'adb shell'
4. copy and paste this in command prompt
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
5. copy and paste this in command prompt
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
before you do this
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
unmount OR turn off your sdcard
and then copy and paste this
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
6. reboot
That's all.
I have installed HTC ROM following this guide
http://www.karrderized.com/romguide/
so i think mine is already rooted. So when I type 'su', no problem for me.
Thanks to the person who posted this awesome tricks.

Then:
in windows:
adb pull /system/usr/keychars/trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin
This backups your existing keylayout.
Then: (you must have the downloaded (unzipped!) file on C: !!)
cd C:\
adb remount
adb push trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin /sdcard/trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin
adb shell
cd /sdcard

reboot
Your device should reboot now and TADA you have fully working QWERTZ!
Please correct my commands if they are wrong.
Disclaimer:
You know this..
can you give me codes to work with the terminal (I don't use sdk -ADB)
And , does it fixes all other stuff to like + - :.... or just swap Z and Y.
(I need that fix so much)
Thanks
Copy the file to your sdcard then:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
cp /sdcard/trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin /system/usr/keychars
i think it fixes all including + etc..
ok did it, typing reboot....

Hi!
This only works reliably with ROMs with the Google virtual keyboard. With the HTC one (which function-wise is better), the hardkeyboard eventually switches back and forth from qwertz to qwerty and back.
Is there a solution for that issue?
Greets
It's because of the Hardwarekeyboardcorrection.
You can try to deactivate it in Settings/Locale Settings/Touch Input/...

Yeah, that's my experience as well that it is due to the hardware keyboard correction.
However, even when I switch that off (correction and completion switched off), this strange behavior of switching back and forth continues :-(.
Is there a solution to this?
Or alternatively how can I install the Google IME on a HTC build as a workaround?
Just pushing GoogleIME.apk doesn't help unfortunately.

LED debugging in Hero (6-22-09)

WOW OK SO I FINALLY GOT LED's WORKING IN HERO!!!
This means they can be manipulated via Terminal but not the Android OS. That will be the next step.
*IMPORTANT 4:50pm CST*
-Correction, you should be copying/symlinking sensors.msm7k.so to sensors.trout.so and not sensors.hero.so to sensors.trout.so. Please see updated instructions below.
If you already copied sensors.hero.so to sensors.trout.so then do the following to fix it. Following the previous instructions could affect auto rotate
Code:
rm /system/lib/hw/sensors.trout.so
ln -s /system/lib/hw/sensors.msm7k /system/lib/hw/sensors.trout.so
*Update 4:44pm CST*
-Changed copy commands to symlink so we save space on /system. Thanks for the tip chunga
*Update 6:01pm CST*
-If you're getting an issue where auto-rotate is no longer working it's most likely you fudged on the symlinking sensors.msm7k.so over to sensors.trout.so.
*Update 9:37pm CST*
-Forgot to add that you need to have /system remounted as read/write. I have added the command below
*Update 8:00pm CST*
The following command does not persist across reboots, therefore it will need to be placed in /init.rc or in /system/init.rc if you have a modded rom that allows for it. Just so everyone is clear, you can NOT edit /init.rc directly. To do that you'll need to unpack boot.img, edit init.rc, then repack boot.img and fastboot flash it to your device. My advice is to download a modded ROM that gets released with this fix.
Code:
echo "1" > /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0062/blink
It was a pretty trick fix to figure out. Here is a revised post with the complete terminal commands. ROM devs you could place these chmod commands in /init.rc to get it working. Please give credit where credit is due if you use my fixes.
Code:
[B]TERMINAL COMMANDS[/B]
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
ln -s /system/lib/hw/lights.msm7k.so /system/lib/hw/lights.trout.so
ln -s /system/lib/hw/copybit.msm7k.so /system/lib/hw/copybit.trout.so
ln -s /system/lib/hw/sensors.msm7k.so /system/lib/hw/sensors.trout.so
echo "1" > /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0062/blink
chmod 666 /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0062/leds/blue/brightness
chmod 666 /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0062/leds/red/brightness
chmod 666 /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0062/leds/green/brightness
What's left to fix?
1) Currently the system is only giving the LED's a brightness of 1 so the light that comes on is dim. We need to find where it's getting this default value and up it to 100.
Want to manually change the colors?
You can edit the "brightness" value under leds/[blue/red/green] . The acceptable values are from 0 - 100. If you mix them up you can make any color you want
Exampe to change colors manually:
Code:
echo "50" > /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0062/leds/blue/brightness
echo "50" > /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0062/leds/red/brightness
This would make a purplish color.
okay so does it change colors when its charging after its cut on.
I believe the hero has dual LEDs. It says something about it in logcat...Let me see if i can find it.

Yes it does in fact have dual LED's. So the trick now that LED's work is to get it working just like it was in cupcake. I'll keep working at it you can be sure of that

I haven't seen it change colors as my phone is fully charged so the green LED comes on. Since we don't have bluetooth I can't check for the blue LED working. Anyone have chompsms installed? I know you can pick which LED color you want. Anyone wanna test that it's all working?

You can type those commands from the terminal. If ROM devs want to make it so installing their ROM automatically does this, they would do it in init.rc.
You and I can do this from the terminal. It should hold those changes across a reboot. Hmmmm, lemme reboot and make sure otherwise it would require unpacking/repacking the boot.img and making the changes to init.rc in there. You can not edit init.rc directly. You have to extract boot.img (you can get this from the ROM you installed). Do a search for unpacking/repacking boot.img
great news
Good job shafty.
tried it, works, restarted my phone by itself after the echo though. Little confuse about the chmod stuff so not gonna try that yet. Oh did it in adb too, thanks.
EDIT: seemed to break my 'g-sensor', so no auto-rotate.
this is going into 1.65 Thanks shafty023 for the work!
running jacman hero and his lights.msm7k.so is already renamed do i need to worry about this and after the chmod lines after the /brightness/ can i enter a modifier to change the ammount of light given out?
just to clarify the terminal commands,
using JACMAN 1.64, files are already renamed.

Ya that's because he got it from justanothercrowd who got it from me. I was sending him most of my fixes directly since I'm using his ROM. Only seemed fair.
So you can ignore the line pertaining to lights.msm7k.
Yes you can feel free to change the value in brightness to whatever you want. I actually think the max is somewhere around 256. You can mix brightness values and that will allow you to change the colors manually. But unfortunately when you plug an a/c adapter it turns on the green led at a brightness value of only 1
so for example at the endo f my chmod 666 .... /brightness/100 ?? or would it be /brightness100
cool! thanks for the fix!

[Q] how to edit GPS.conf in system folder ?

At first U must root R phone and then install Root Explorer. After that go to SYSTEM/ETC/
Here u need to edit GPS.CONF file and change NTP Server from northamerica.pool.ntp.org to europe.pool.ntp.org.
I hope that I help U m8.
Get write acces in system folder
I used the post I've quoted down here. After you have gained write acces in the system folder you can edit gps.conf!
octy said:
By default the /system is mounted in read-only mode.
With 'root' access you can change this.
First 'root' your phone with tutorial 'slumpolo' has provided at
the begining of this thread.
Then open a shell on your phone with adb
Code:
adb shell
Grant 'root' access with 'su' command and have a look of memory partitions
Code:
su
mount
In 'mount' command output, identify the partition on which /system was mounted.
In my phone it was '/dev/block/stl6'
Finally you can remount it to get read-write permissions on it.
But before be sure to be outside /system in the shell (by typing 'cd /' for example).
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl6 /system
Do the modification you want..... BECAREFUL of want you do, you can damage your phone.
Set read-only mode again
Code:
mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/stl6 /system
Sorry I cannot made any snapshot for the moment, I can't use my phone.
Hope it can help you.

[ROOT][TOOL] Insufficient Storage Bug Fix (Fix Me Storage Official Thread)

Got the "insufficient storage" bug for the Google Play Store? Then you're in the right place!
First of all, a couple disclaimers:
This is not a magic cure-all! If you have less than 1 MB, nothing is going to help you. Sorry, it's not us and we can't do anything about it. The Android OS requires a small reserve for data and updates.
We are not responsible for any damages, loss of data, etc. incurred from misuse, failure, or any other unexpected cause.
Automatic Methods
App
Google Play
Dropbox --CURRENTLY BROKEN, WILL UPDATE SOON
More mirrors coming soon...
Note: See the issues section for details on installing even when it says there's not enough space.
Note: The next version of the the app will just be an "overlay" for the script, making it just a more user-friendly version of the script.
Using the app is pretty self-explanatory. You open it and choose a fix.
Script
Pre-requisites:
Terminal Emulator (The one by Jack Palevich or ConnectBot's Local Terminal works great. Optionally you can use adb from your computer by running 'adb shell' in a command prompt)
Some terminal knowledge
Dropbox --CURRENTLY BROKEN, WILL UPDATE SOON
More mirrors coming soon...
You can get a list of fixes and their descriptions by running 'bash fms.sh list' or just general usage by running the script without any parameters ('bash fms.sh').
Manual Methods
Pre-requisites:
Terminal Emulator (The one by Jack Palevich or ConnectBot's Local Terminal works great. Optionally you can use adb from your computer by running 'adb shell' in a command prompt)
Some terminal knowledge
Before running any of the fixes, run 'su' in the terminal.
Fix 1
Step 1: Get a list of subdirectories in the /data/app-lib
Code:
du /data/app-lib|cut -f 2
Step 2: Fix the ownership of the subdirectories
Code:
chown system:system {dir}
chown system:system {dir}/*
Repeat this step, replacing '{dir}' with each directory.
Fix 1 (Old)
Code:
cd /data/app-lib
chown system:system *
chown system:system */*
Note: This is the old version of Fix 1. It may be easier, but it's less thorough. It will most likely be enough though.
Fix 2
Code:
chmod -R 755 /data/app-lib
chmod 771 /data/app-lib
Issues
1. App failed to install!
Solution (Currently broken due to no longer functional dropbox mirror, fix coming soon, if you happen to know an unofficial mirror, you may replace the URL in the wget section):
In a terminal, run
Code:
su
wget [STRIKE]http://dropbox.com/s/wcgrk0qxvg7hhcx/FixMeStorage.apk -O /data/app/com.TWP.Project.Fixes.FS.IS-1.apk[/STRIKE]
Then reboot your device.
2. None of them worked!
We'll try to help you fix it, but we need you to contact us.
3. It said I don't have root!
Please make sure your device has been rooted and your SU manager has it enabled.
Please make sure you granted the app root access.
If everything is good there, then contact us and we will try to help you.

Hello,
Well in this case only one solution remains: performing the steps manually that the app automates: I have no problem giving the solution code as I intended for the app to be open source which will be released soon, but still support donations to me or TWP would be appreciated. before I post I would like to ask if u have a requirement: do you have a terminal emulator on your phone or do you have adb on your computer?
EDIT: I will be posting on main post the manual steps.

Thanks, very nice.
Can we have this stickied?
Can we get a mod to sticky this?
Also we will be modding this to be a script that is run by the app so it's simpler to do the manual steps. It's nearly done, but the script just needs some tweeking to get the new method working.
One more thing:
If you don't want to use the manual steps, but can't install the app you can do the following

Thanks for posting that, wolfgentleman! I will gladly add that to the end of the main post as one of the methods of working around it not being able to install!
Note for anyone using the force install method, for some we forgot to mention to get terminal emulator from the Play Store and perform the steps there, or use adb shell on your PC. (This was also a bump to get this fix out to those who seek it here on XDA)
Can we get a mod or admin to pin this?
Just a bump to keep it up top while it's not pinned...

Sticky/Pin?
Can we get this stickied/pinned?
P.S.: As I look back at the first post, I realize it does need some work. There's a lot of unnecessary bloat and such to the post. I will have him rewrite it in the when I get up out of bed.
Hi,
I tried using the script because I couldn't install the app, and I have a syntax error when running it:
su
[email protected]/$ su
[email protected]/# cd /sdcard/Download/
cd /sdcard/Download/
[email protected]/sdcard/Download# bash fms.sh list
bash fms.sh list
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: Success
fms.sh: line 6: syntax error near unexpected token `;;'
fms.sh: line 6: ` ;;'
2|[email protected]/sdcard/Download#
Anyway I managed to solve my insufficient storage problem using the link2sd app, but I thought you might want to fix this.
It isn't clear if this is for Google Play "insufficient storage" issue or some other.

[Q] hellp-How to Enable Hidden Languages

New to forum so i'm forced to post here
i followed instruction from here
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281254
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281254&page=2
and also tried from there
HTML:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/android-4-1-4-2-4-3-jelly-bean/314447-solved-htc-one-change-system-language-swedish-not-list-options.html
and also from here
HTML:
http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-enable-hidden-languages-on-samsung-htc-and-sony-android-devices/
and except app MoreLocale 2 i cant enable more languages in system language on device.
my device is
htc one s ver s4(1500 mhz procesor) cid HTC_Y13
i unlocked bootloader, rooted and have SUser permision(i think) and didn't do anything else except backup withTWRP(Team Win Recovery Project) , but every time i tried to edit default.xml or HTC__Y13.xml in
/system/customize/CID/
or with adb or copying with app root browser
it edit the files (open and chek) but when i restart the device nothing stays, it revert to original state .
So i cant have more languages then before, i'm missing some that are not listed.
i dont have Customization Settings Provider from this tutorial
HTML:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/android-4-1-4-2-4-3-jelly-bean/314447-solved-htc-one-change-system-language-swedish-not-list-options.html
so i'm running out of ideas.
i dont want to use app MoreLocale 2
is the solution different rom or what?
i dont want to mess a lot with the phone which is from my older Neighbour who need Serbian language, or Croatian not listed in device setup
so please help or give me the link to solution , i search the last 3 hrs on the web but cant find
cant the factory reset done by TWRP be the problem or not.
before i reset i pull the htc__y13 file and it is edited( so i know a copied it on right place, i also do remount with ro which is not described in tut. but also without efect
i found this elsewhere
Not all phones and versions of android have things mounted the same.
Limiting option when remounting would be best.
Simply change ro to rw and add the remount option
# mount -o rw,remount /system
Once you are done making changes, you should remount with the original readonly.
# mount -o ro,remount /system
Click to collapse
but still with no efect
and i also cant find bak file after reset from tut thanks to CVAngelo
Code:
adb shell
su (tap "grant access" on your htc screen)
mount -o remount,rw /system
mv /system/customize/CID/default.xml /system/customize/CID/[U]default.xml.bak[/U]
cat /sdcard/your_cid.xml > /system/customize/CID/default.xml
exit
exit
its like there is a backup which overwrite everything i do to system folder ?????
