Update Jf modified build's thru a online server ? (Suggestion) - G1 Android Development

someone should make an app that can upgrade all Jf modified verison thru a server instead of manually connecting the G1 to the computer and download the file and installing on the phone. how does this idea sound.

Just download it from your phone. Thats what I do I hardly ever hook my phone up to the computer unless I'm transfering media. Download it to your phone and it will save under downloads. I use Astro to rename it and move it to the root. I also have all the updates and themes I like saved in folders. When I want to use them I just move it to the root and reboot.

It is already in the works, check the original thread. (its kinda dead for now because there isnt much to talk about while they are building it).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475689

I've uploaded a first beta version. Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3294921#post3294921

why do you spend so much time making your own when you could just hack the one that does it on the phone?

Modified TC5-RC8 update

Update: Here's an updated update. This update updates your phone so that it is updated. Note: if you apply this update over the previous update, it updates the update that you had previously updated your phone with, so that you have the most recent update.
This one contains the same stuff as my RC30 v1.2 update. Go read the notes for it over in that thread
Plus! You now get a voice dialer, amazon MP3, and all 4 IM types available on the US firmware (aim, gtalk, windows live and yahoo).
Note: to get the other IM providers, you have to delete the improvider settings after you install the update. Open a terminal and type the following command as root:
rm -r /data/data/com.android.providers.im
Then reboot the phone, and you should have all 4 IM providers available.
And now, for something completely different. A man with 3... err. nevermind, it's just the download link.

http://android-dls.com/forum/index.php?f=24&t=190&rb_v=viewtopic (see forum post for actual link to file)
----------------------
As usual, this can only be installed if you have already installed the modified recovery image. If you are running the official RC30 or RC8 build, you won't be able to use this.
To install, rename the file to update.zip, put it on the sd card, and reboot the phone into recovery mode (home + power). Once the recovery mode comes up, press alt+L to turn on the text display, and alt+S to apply the update.
This build can be installed by anyone that has the modified recovery image - it will run on both US or UK phones. Note though, some of the functionality in the US version is missing in the UK version: Voice dialing, myfaves, amazon mp3 store, chat messages via SMS.
And there might be other miscellaneous issues with running this build on a US phone.. possible MMS issues, etc. If you do encounter anything, feel free to post about it (it's good to know what works and doesn't), but don't expect it to be fixed . I may be able to fix some stuff.. but I can't work miracles
For all you people out there that aren't on t-mobile, installing this should fix the myfaves issues that y'all have been having (sending SMSs to t-mobile.. etc.)
Note: you can freely switch between the modded RC30 and modded RC8 build. If you install one and don't like it, you can always switch back.
Big thanks to SGTDavePwnage for finding the download, and for testing out the update! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443713

Ooo. hot AND sticky! I'm gonna have to go pick up some cinnamon rolls now.
Thanks pof
Ooh I'm so going to try that.. no MyFaves..
I'm still nowhere on making my own build... My Ubuntu has decided that I wasn't entitled to networking anymore.. (i hate that thing)
Thanks for your hard work!
No network for you! 1 year!
Just throw Ubuntu on a VM, you'll be building android in no time
Thanks JESUSFREKE, you did magic !
Well, I did screw up my network driver while trying to update the ATI ones.. but don't ask.
So I just updated my phone with your update and..... it seems to work
It took an awful lot of time to reboot so I got scared but it finally came up fine. I still have root of course (thanks so much)
Wifi ok, Camera ok, motion sensor ok.
Data.. I only get Edge, but that could be my provider not having 3G coverage here. To be verified. I don't use it much anyway since in my country the cheapest data plan is $40 for 50Mb.. :|
The dialer does not automatically format number in US format!! Yippee... I know it's a small thing but it was bugging me.
All contacts got lost (of course since they were managed by MyFaves). But syncing worked. With some errors in the background but apparently not too significant.
SMS ok. I'm not sure what you're calling SMS Chat. The SMS app still looks like a chat. I assume it's some T-Mo US feature that I won't miss.
And most important of all Mario Simulator still works fine . Seriously I can't find anything that doesn't work.
There is a new app "web'n'walk" from T-Mo which can not be removed through the normal application manager. If it's not replacing any android service i guess that a little remount and busybox mv should do the trick.
Amazon is indeed missing. I wonder if people who care about it could just copy the .apk and .odex file over and get it back. I don't care about it so I won't try. People still buy music?
I've been looking at logcat while writing this and I couldn't see any crazy SMS behavior.
So all in all a good upgrade for non T-Mo users with a US phone. For what it's worth I recommend it.

Hopefully I'm not being stupid - but is this the one for the UK? Whats the difference between RC30 and TC5-RC8 ?
Thanks for your hard work. T-Mobile in the UK have pushed out their update today - it keeps asking me if I want it (which I keep saying no) but need to make sure I get the correct image!
Yes, this is for the UK. (but will work on US handsets)
It is the new update that is currently being pushed out by T-mobile uk (but modified to keep root)
Functionally its not that different to RC7.
Think of it as the equivalent to RC30 (with all the nice US bits removed)
If i already installed the Modded RC30 update using the step by step in this forum..
do i just put this on my SD card and go into recovery mode and hit Alt+S
or do i have to do all the steps again?
i do not know if i have root or not... i tried a chmod on a font file and it wouldn;t let me.. even when i put "su"
said it was a read-only file system

Assuming you have correctly installed the modded RC30, you just need to rename the zip to update.zip and put this on your SD card and go into recovery mode and hit Alt+S.
To check if you have root, try re-mounting (mount -oremount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system)

Yes, the Uk software doesnt use MyFaves (which controls contacts on US software).
That will be one side affect of switching between regions.
You can still re-sync with google and it will re-download them tho.

I got my black UK G1 out of a T-Mobile shop last Friday and by Sunday they stopped selling them because there was a "bad batch" meaning my dad had to get the white one. Anyhoo...i have a dead pixel (which i can't stop looking at) so i took it back to the shop today but they still don't have black ones so i'll have to wait till Monday...but...i presume i'll end up with an updated one...

[Updates] JACHero / TwistedZero Co-Op OTA Updater (6/27/09 - 2:33AM EST)

After painstakingly researching into jfupdater, fixing a bad adt and sdk installation, and realizing that both the 1.1 and 1.5 sources could not coexist in one project, it is done. This program will work for JACHero 1.7 / TwistedZeroP and later builds. Due to the pre-work nature of TwistedZero, this will ensure that at least one of the system.zip archives is on the ext partition (it may not provide the most updated programs, but it will at least allow the update to be installed) You have the option to poll all updates, just JACHero, just TwistedZeroP or just TwistedZeroM. So far, only JACHero's updates will download because I am still working on getting mine on a dedicated server. I will try to keep as up to date as possible with download availability. Anyway, without any further stalling:
http://twistedumbrella.googlepages.com/heroupdater.ui.apk
Updating to the latest *working* version
You will need to have transferred the build.prop file to the /system/ folder of the phone for this to work.
They are available through my site's main page for my builds, and for now on my google code for JACHero until I get a new page coded for that.
Currently working on getting my builds program ready. Default update type is TwistedZeroP (can be changed in menu). Program is now a free download on market. Hero Update.
Very nice......

You're still gonna get wiped depending on the build.
it told me error while downloading what am I doing wrong...?
Very nice . This will truly make things easier. Nice work Twisted and Jac =).
So..I get a message when using update. The update app says "Your system is running an unsupported OS. (Version unknown) Please manually upgrade to JACHero 1.7 / TwistedZeroP or later and try again"
I understand its still a work in progress..just reporting my experience with the process.
Is "M" not a newer version than "P"?
I would assume, that even if the updater could not find an update for M, that M would still be a supported version and that it would just give me an error of not able to find an update for it or something. Not that M is unsupported.
FYI for all..I downloaded the files via the phone, installed linda file manager, android .Zip app(AndroZip) and AppsInstaller app. I Extracted the build.prop with and androzip, moved the file to /system/ on the phone with Linda, installed the HeroUpdater.ui.apk with Appinstaller. And then I get that message about an unsupported OS.
Great idea, thank you Twisted & JAC!
How do I use it? It shows me TwistedZero 1.7P as an update - can I just download it and then it will be installed?
No wipe or something like that?
an error occured while downloading 1.7P ?!

Did you reboot after copying the build.prop? Rebooting did it for me (seems like this file is read when the system comes up).
Do I replace the build.prop file I already have on my /system/ folder or do I not even need to worry about the build.prop?

Yes, the idea is that you replace it. The only difference between both files is a new reference to the build name (so the apk can tell what version you are on). Nevertheless it's always a good idea to back things up before you overwrite any files (learned the hard way throughout the years . So simply do something like 'cp /system/build.prop /sdcard/build.prop.old' from the terminal or 'adb pull /system/build.prop' from your computer before actually replacing the build.prop file.

[APP] Google apps solution in progress help needed.

Hello all,
I am trying to make an application that will detect what actual hardware a user is using and then go out to google and download the official update for the device extract the google apps and install on the device. Right now I was wondering if someone could point me to an ota link for the MT3G and G1 for T-Mobile just for a starting purpose. I already found away to get hardware id and match so I am good there. Any help would be really appreciated.
I don't have them handy but I recommend you contact @wesgarner on here or Twitter and if I recall @Haykuro has them too. If @wesgarner doesn't hook you up right away let me know and I will look them up.

Hi TheArtiszan,
I can tell you that the "OTA" update links change and are (of course) specific to the carrier in question. So for G1 and MT3G, we're talking T-Mobile, in which case I can inform you that the links and locations of the OTA updates rotate and change. By any specific pattern ? That eludes me completely and I would suggest it could/would be hard to track.
Also (and possibly even more challenging to what you are trying to accomplish), the OTA updates typically provide "patch sets" instead of the full blown system image you seek to extract "pure" files.
I'm sure not the answer you wanted, but I hope it helps.
~enom~
yeh I am starting with just T-Mobile ones first since they are my carrier and go from there. even a basic one would be good. I already have an app that will extract files from a file downloaded from my site (minus progress bar still working on that part lol) and extracts files so i have a good start I think. Just stinks that is not in C# would be done already.
Didnt get a response yet from them for thefiles. got app semi working from a rom on a private server any one know about google hosted packages

I think you are taking the hard way to accomplish your goal. Farmatito has already developed a backup script that backs up the necessary files from your phone <HERE>. And redmdc already has a script that will take a backup file and insert the files into an update.zip file <HERE>. There is no need to go out to the providers to get these files. We all already have them.

Install APK installer without market

Is there a way to install Astro File manager without using the market? Because if I would need to install APKs in a situation where I don't have access to the market (No Internet access, etc.) I would need to use Astro File Manager and if I didn't have it installed I would need a way to install it without using the standard way of using the market...
Plus, it would save me bandwidth to install it from the SD Card each time...
To answer this topic quickly. There is no way to install a apk without an apk installer. Be it astro or any other app. There just aint
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
So then you have to get one from the Market? So if you cannot use the market (don't have a connection) you can't install it?
Damn, the next release should include and APK installed because I am sure most people use APKs. If not, then why would they be using Android.
PS, wow no real reply until the second page... (Edit:kekkle's post and this post were on the second page after nobnut filled the first page with troll posts, since then they were deleted so now it's on the first page)
PS2: 100th post
Seriously now...
There is a manual way you can install apks without an apk installer...
Download the apk onto your desktop/laptop. Remove the back panel from your desktop/laptop using a hammer (a claw hammer is best but you can use a pin hammer if you have no claw hammer).
Remove the battery cover from your device (your Android phone not your vibrating butt plug).
Using the tweezers you normally use to masturbate. Find the downloaded apk and carefully place it underneath the battery. Reinsert the battery and battery cover.
Before you restart the device, firmly knock the device against a hard surface like the wall or a hard floor about 15 times until you are sure you have started the kernel flux capacitor.
Then restart the device.
If the device fails to start normally, take it back to the stockist and tell them you were born retarded and that you want to trade it in for an iPhone.
If you've got an HTC Phone you can install ASTRO (or any APK) using HTC Sync.

Just use droid explorer and close this thread
or you can use adb to install apks.
so in short yes there are ways to install apk without market.
I use Android Mate for my file manager. Also MybackupPro which backs up my apk's. Ones I download from the Market, phone browser or home computer all get put in one folder & merged with a backup on my sdcard. If I need an app later and in bad cell coverage can install without downloading again.
From what I understand only apps from the Market are updated so I try and download it there first.

After it downloads you should be able to say "wait to install later." It should be around 360MB I hear. If you have an app that shows file sizes it should locate this as a large file on your device. Like Free Cleaner and File Manager, from the PlayStore, if you go under Memory, go under large files, it should show you the location. Then go there and zip it up and save to another directory like Download. And then upload to Mega.nz or another file sharing site. Thank you for helping!!!

This is exactly what I need as well, just the modem.bin or NON-HLOS.bin whatever is on the modem partition. I suppose there is a way to pull from adb as well. However, not knowing what is in the OTA makes it quite difficult to see if there are mulitple modem partitions.
Go to system / build number / click it 7 times (it should say you are now a developer), the enable USB debugging. Trust the computer you plug it into (it will ask you on the screen of the phone), then type:
adb pull /dev/block/by-name/modem NON-HLOS.bin
Something like the above should work and save to your fastboot directory, where ever you ran the ADB command from. Then you can zip that file up and upload and we get all the new modem bands.
my problem is i use TMobile and changed to eu and global my 4g is 120mbs 5g 44mbits it was 198 i needed it to test if it changes you fastboot flash modem_a or(b) i could use someone who has TMobile modem backed up in twrp i can give everyone img then
i think i found issue with 5g nr is turned off i used settings database editor to change from 0 to 1
Would this help with 5g speeds? Also I have already updated, but I plan to keep my TMobile 8 stock so I'll try to get whatever files you guys need. Currently at work though.

I figured that would probably be the way. Just wasn't sure does too the fact the app Setedit made it seem like it would save if you just gave it permissive over adb. No rush on you doing that though. Not sure if I'll be investing into all of that yet. I don't mind stock enough to modify yet.
Ok so where's the OTA download link?

Like Free Cleaner and File Manager, from the PlayStore, if you go under Memory, go under large files, it should show you the location. Then go there and zip it up and save to another directory like Download. And then upload to Mega.nz or another file sharing site. Thank you for helping!!!

T-Mobile variants don't give you the wait option it restarts immediately. Also you can't get to where it saves the update anyway without root. There's another way of doing it and we are waiting for it to be pulled
