Image won't open in URL on Internet Explorer Mobile - General Questions and Answers

Hi Guys,
I am having a problem at the moment. When I try and open a URL that ends in .jpg, Internet Explorer Mobile wants to download and open it. I want the image to simply open in Internet Explorer Mobile. It can obviously render images, as it does it all the time, but seemingly not when the URL ends in .jpg.
I tested the link on a desktop version of IE and it didn't ask to download, it just showed the image, which suggests to me it is not using "Application/Force-Download". I am going to try on another mobile web browser like Opera.
Does anybody know why this is? Or, is there a registry tweak to fix it? Thank you everyone for any information you can provide. It will help me greatly with a project I am working on.
PS I have "View Images" turned on in Internet Explorer Mobile, so that is not the problem.

i'm not so sure this is a problem.
which internet explorer are you using?
I think the new internet explorer shows images rather than downloading them.

Thanks for your reply. I have gotten around the problem by putting the link (it's static) inside a blank html page. Works perfectly now. Cheers!

i'm sorry, but what did you do before? tried to put the link in a PIE window with a website already loaded?

Sorry, let me be very specific:
I needed to get PIE to load an image inside the web browser, simple as entering the URL address and up comes the image.
However, PIE won't do that (could be a VGA problems specific to Imate phones I heard). Instead it asks if you want to download it, which I don't.
So, to fix the problem I have written a html page that basically says:
<html><head>
<Src img="www.website.com/June/Image.jpg">
</head></html>
Using this way, the image is forced to open inside PIE.
I needed it for a mod I am making for HTC Home and Manilla 2D.

Oh.. i thought you just put it inside a blank PIE window instead of one already loaded with a webpage.. hehe
good to know then.
the new PIE loads images regularly tho, doesn't download them.
cheers

Hi, having some problems with my Touch Pro

Please bear with me, as this is my first windows mobile phone and I'm not all too familiar with it.
First problem is, tapping "Launch Browser" on the Internet tab does not work. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that the Opera browser was not installed on my device! Now, as far as I know, it should come already in all devices. So, I downloaded the Opera 9.5 browser off their website. How can I set it up so when I tap "Launch Browser" on the Internet tab, Opera 9.5 will automatically run? Currently tapping it still does nothing.
Second is, I've been hearing about this "Windows" folder in the HTC Touch Pro. I can't seem to locate this. When I browse for it with my computer, the name of the TP's "hard drive" is "\", and then I see the following folders:
Application Data, ConnMgr, Content, Documents and Settings, Music, My Documents, Program Files, cemail (hidden file), pim
Is this root folder the "Windows" folder?
Third thing is, in the "Programs" tab in TF3D, there's this icon there that when I press (looks like the default icon for a folder in Vista), it gives me an error. It says "The file 'wt5jetpr' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
There we go, that's all. Thank you, if you've read this far.
I can't help with the Opera thing but as for your Windows folder, it's a system file and hidden. You will have to unhide it in your Vista/XP operating system before you can see it using your PC>
You see, I already enabled the viewing of hidden folders. There aren't any other items other than the ones I listed.
EDIT: I tried creating a folder called "Windows" and Vista tells me I can't, because a folder of the same name already exists.
That's weird.. hidden folders are already enabled and I still can't see it.
Hiya, i'm a bit of a noob myselft with regards to wm6.1 so for the opera issue i dont think i could be much help with that same with the file that wont delete so i hope someone else will answer that, to see ur windows folder though when the phone is connected to the pc open up explorer on ur pc and click on tools/folder options then click on view and make sure either the "hide protected operating system files" box is unchecked &/or the "show hidden system files box is checked and this should let you see the windows folder.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: looks like someone already answered in the time it took me to type that, my own fault for multitasking ...

Same thing as you, when I browse to the device from Windows Explorer.
However, if I go to Tools - Folder Options - View tab and I select "Show hidden files and folders", the Windows directory is displayed.

By the name, it looks like it is JetCet Print 5.
Strange you have these errors. Do you use a custom ROM?
PS: been too slow to answer too. but at least the answers match ;-)
I'm not using a custom rom =\. The rom came with my device.
It's:
1.90.405.1.WWE
It's a HTC Touch Pro T7272
Then I advise you to do a Hard Reset. Opera and JetCet print should be there, and should not give you any certificate errors.
I advise you to read a lot these forums, gather as much info as you can, and experimenting with your device. You have a powerhouse in your hands, you know? you have unlimited possibilities. Any questions should you have must be asked.
Alright, I'll give that a try tomorrow after the day's gone so I have lots of time to figure things out.
Sorry for the double post, but I figure this message won't get read if I simply edit my last post.
Anyways, I hard resetted the device and I got Opera and that printing program working! Thanks creiz.
Just one last thing I'm trying to figure out.. is there any way I can get a custom alarm ring tone without downloading a program? (I'm trying to avoid having to do that if possible)

Internet favorites / Bookmarks - file type .url - not working??

Guys,
I have a load of internet shortcuts (bookmarks) on my PPC under Windows\Favorites which are read by PIE and are displayed on QuickMenu however!...
When I try and run one of these files and choose either PIE or Opera, I get in the address bar (url) the location of the file and not the website it supposedly points to.
If I choose the favorite from within PIE then all is well. Strange!!!
I've been looking for an answer for a while now and am drawing a blank.
Please someone help. I'm starting to get a headache
Oh, I should probably tell you I have WM6.1 Pro (HTC Touch HD).
Thanks
Wayne
Windows Mobile doesn't read ".url" file naively. The files you are messing with are resourse files for the browsers (the browsers pull information from the file, you can't push the information by clicking them) There are programs that open your 'internet favorites" (m2d, ultimate launch, and "Interent link launcher")
Thanks for the reply joel2009!
Is there an app that I can install that can handle the .url file type and run the browser with the url from the file?
Anyone able to answer this?...
quickmenu loads as favorites, the contents of the favorites folder inside the windows directory. Now if I delete this favorites folder from the windows directory, on Quickmenu, all I'm left with under favorites is a few Opera shortcuts that load Opera and do work.
Any ideas where these Opera favorites are found so I can manually add to this list?
Thanks for your help!
Wayne
interent link launcher uses mortsript to open internet link files (i'm not sure of the extension, i haven't had time to try it yet)
On the opera favorites, opera asks you where you want to save the bookmark file too when you create one.
Come on guys.....
I've found this and if you go down the list and find \urlfile\Shell\Open\Command : REG_SZ it shows the necessary registry entry that is needed to run a url file from explorer and when run this file opens within IE correctly.
There must be a command switch that follows OPERA9.EXE or OPERAL.EXE that interprets the file correctly and opens the web page.
For now I've got it set to open files in to IE. Not great but nearly what I want.
(I posted about this last night, but it got lost -- apologies if the old one comes back and I look like I've posted twice.)
I worked out a solution to this problem, and posted it up at ppcgeeks. You have to install mortscript, but otherwise it's not too bad, and has been working flawlessly for me.

Hope it helps.

How do I setup working file associations for Opera Browser 9

I have SKTools, Total Commander, and Registry Key Editors.
I tried setting up file associations to open URL files, but it doesn't work. Only PIE opens the URL files by default.
Can I get the instructions to open URL files with Opera Browser?
Bump, please help me.
This is my 1st bump.
Bump, please help me.
This is my 2nd bump.
As far as I know you can set up thatparameters typing opera:config on your device
Hope it helped,
So do you mean the file associations parameters should be "opera:config"?
URL associations are set up by the app you're using.
if opera is defined as your default browser any url you'll open will automatically pop opera up.
Okay, I am using File Explorer and Total Commander. I want to Open .url files with Opera, it opens with PIE instead.
How do I open it?
What is a "default calendar"?
When I set URL file association for Total Commander, the link does not go online, instead it brings me to an error page. Under the URL box in Opera Browser, it would not show www.google.com, instead it would show something like: storage card/%mystuff/%20favorite links
So if I copied a google.com url into my phone storage card, I want to open it and GO ONLINE with Opera Browser NOT PIE. How do i do this?
PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE ATTACHMENT, SO YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT KIND OF FILE I AM TALKING ABOUT.
meant browser.. not calendar.
when you setup a default browser it will open up all urls in it... automatically

I used Xperia Tweak to setup Opera Browser as my default browser, I still open google.url and it opens with PIE.
My basic file program is Total Commander.
BTW I am not talking about Microsoft Windows. I am talkin about Windows Mobile, and the phone I use is the Xperia X1.
Why is everyone giving me confusing answers. I'm getting more and more confused.
I have looked extremely hard for file associations for opera browser, and this is what i got:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1714441
I do not use morthscript though, and I'm afraid digging into will cause me to factory reset my phone again, and I have rest my phone 10 times already.
Please, tell me if there is any other way to Open URLs via Opera Browser.
I have this program which i downloaded ages ago. I cant remember where i got it from, so im just uploading it myself. Just to clarify, this is NOT my program.
You know how on a pc, you can right click and select "Open with"?
Well, this cab brings that to pocket pc's
Hope it helps
Yeah this is exactly what I was looking for. The thread link from one of my posts also talks about "open with" method. But I don't want to use mortscript.
If your cab is not going to work, I guess I will give up searching for a solution.
Anyways thanks, you are my miracle!.
Here is an update:
Nope... it opens Opera Browser but than it doesn't go to the website (the same exact thing happens if I set file associations for Opera, and the same exact thing still happens if I use the registry editor to change association values, xperia tweak doesn't work, total commander built in file associations doesn't work, sk tools file associations doesn't work either).
I GIVE UP
Registry settings
Hi
Registry settings where file defaults are is:
Hot Key Classes Root.
In this directory there are hundreds (or more) keys relating to all the different file extensions that are associated with programmes, etc. You need to look for:
.htm
.html
htmfile
htmlfile
There may be others. Basically if these keys exist the values you're looking for are the ones with the browser executable listed in them, for example opera9.exe/operaL.exe, iexplore.exe.
I hope that helps

as i see it you ar not talking of .htm or .html files.
You are talking off .url File's
normaly (xp) they are handled by the protocol handler
in wm6.1 there is no such thing and it is directly handeled by iexplore
opera wil not handle these i gues
you need to find a app that reads the urlfile an launh the app with the correct parrameters
you also need this
\hkcr\http,URL Protocol,
\hkcr\http\shell\open\command, ,"\windows\operaL.exe" %1
\hkcr\https,URL Protocol,
\hkcr\https\shell\open\command, ,"\windows\operaL.exe" %1
or you can try http://sourceforge.net/projects/jzsmartmort
(I posted about this last night, but the message got lost in some backup snafu. So I'll post it again. Apologies if they both end up here.)
I hacked together a solution to this problem, and posted it at ppcgeeks.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=62816
It involves installing Mortscript, and having it handle passing the links to Opera. Seems to be working perfectly for me so far. Hopefully my instructions are not too convoluted. Enjoy.

PDF & DOC attachments

Did a search, so sorry if I missed it. But, a couple of questions.
1) If you have root, is it possible to download and save PDF and Word files that come in on POP3 (or even gmail) email?
2) Otherwise, does anyone know the phone folder where these files are temporarily store while on the phone, and can they be accessed that way?
I spend a lot of time overseas, and going back and forth to the web to retrieve is a pain and expensive. Thanks
Forget it, I solved the issue.
Informing use how you solved the issue might help others
I'd be really interested in how you managed this, I've searched here, and Googled everywhere (almost). But I still haven't found what I'm looking for...

lol...gotta love these types of posts right?
I'm able to save attachments like this using k-9 mail., for those interested
Sorry to go AWOL -- had to leave the country for a bit. My apologies.
Yeah, I also "solved" it by using K9. But, I find the program very buggie.
On a larger, related question, how does the Android platform make its file associations? In other words, when I receive an email attachment (with the stock app), it will allow me to download and save that attachment to my SD card only if there is an onboard, associated program. I can download .jpg, because Android has an application built in that will read a jpg. So, if I want to download a .doc file, I can't unless there is an appropriate app onboard. (Although k9 seems to have found a way). Where, in the Android platform, is this association made? And, is it possible (with a rooted phone) to somehow manipulate those associations to allow downloading of ANY (or a chosen few) files?
For instance, I find that if I change the file extension on a Word doc (for example) from "doc" to "jpg", my onboard email will allow me to download and save to SD card. So, it obviously CAN do it, what's stopping it?
Again, sorry for "skipping out" in the midst of a thread.
Download Crutch Lite in the market allows you to download any file by making Android believe it can open any filetype.
Theres a app called download crutch on the market that allows downloading of files that may not have associated applications. Not exactly sure what file types it supports but its worth a shot.
EDIT: Fushichou got it before me but heres a link to Cyrket http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=download+crutch
Thanks, but my experience is that Crutch will not work on email attachments. It seems to be an internet based device. I used it for a while. Partially, this is a kind of tech question -- how are the files associated?

Youtube App: "Connection Failed" on HTC Diamond 2 and some general Questions

Youtube App: "Connection Failed" on HTC Diamond 2 and some general Questions
Hi, I just bought my HTC Diamond 2 [Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro] last month and the Youtube App is the one that is pre-installed on my phone.
My carrier is At&t and the connection is EDGE.
My problem is when I open the youtube app, I get the message: "Warning: Connection failed. Please try again." I checked that my internet is working because I can browse different sites through Opera and I can still update the weather. I found out that youtube app works perfectly fine ONLY when my diamond2 is connected to my laptop via ActiveSync. As soon as I disconect it, the message returns and the videos in my history will not load anymore.
I searched the forum for similar problems and had tried opening Internet Explorer etc with no success. I don't think anyone mentioned that their youtube app actually worked [ONLY] when it's connected to a pc. Please help! I want to use it on the go, not when I'm near my laptop.
Some general questions:
I had no success in trying to increase Window Opera's max tab to 5 (the default is at 2!!!) through opera:config [this thing will not save!!] The other option is to copy the opera.ini file from \windows\opera9 directory to the pc and manually change it. How do I get to "windows" from my pc? I see it when I go to File Explorer from my phone but when I connect my phone to the pc via ActiveSync, I do not see the "Windows" file in my laptop. If it's hidden somehow, how do I unhide it? If not how do I get to this file?
The second question I have is how do I get to the registry of the phone?
This Diamond2 is my first smartphone so I'm extremely new to Window Mobile and pocket PC's in general. Just want to say that I'm grateful for all the stuff I learned from exploring this forum. Any additional help is also appreciated.
anyone? about my youtube problem?

For Youtube : Go to Settings > Connections Tab > Connections (Again ^^) > Advanced > Select Networks, and be sure you have choose the right DATA connection to connect.
For Opera : You have to be sure you click "Save" on opera:config, when you click on a sub-section, it deploys the section, and at the bottom of the section you have "Save".
By the way, if you want to access to your Windows directory (for another thing, soft), install Total Commander on your diamond2 (Google it). Or with your PC : If you have XP, open an explorer, Tools (on the top) > Folders Options > go to the second TAB and search the option to display all folders.
(For Vista/Seven : Organize > Folder & Search options. On an explorer window.)
For the registry, you can access to the registry with TotalCommander, or an another soft (with more functionnality) : PHM Regedit (Google it )
If you have others questions.
Hi, I've found my answers for those general questions by searching through this and other forums. But thanks anyway for answering them.
Back to youtube, I still have no success in getting this thing to work. What do you mean by "choose the right DATA connection to connect"? When I am in "Select Networks," I have a list of choices: My ISP name, MEdia Net, AT&T ISP, My Work Network, and My ISP. It is in MEdia Net when I first went in and MEdia Net seems to be the only connection that allows me to get online, all the others failed when I changed to it. I guess that's the right DATA connection to connect?
Then it's the same situation with that youtube App, I can go online but I get this error message when I open the youtube app.
Again I'm in the US, with AT&T's EDGE data connection. Thanks.
hum i don't know! have you a stock ROM or a custom? if it's a custom try to know on the ROM topic if any similar problem appear.
Do you use any proxy settings for your data connections? you don't have result with search on XDA?
My rom is not custom, it's whatever it is when I bought the phone. And no proxy setting. Searched the forum, found some youtube "connection failed" threads but it's either a different problem and got fixed or I tried the solution with no result.
Right now I think I will search for another wvga youtube player and install that, see if a different one works.
bump* I was searching the forum and didn't find this solution posted anywhere so I chose this thread to post the solution (at least it worked for my Tilt2 Rhodium).
I had the problem with my Tilt2 (Rhodium). See if yours has this:
Go to Start-Tools-Proxy Manager-Disable Proxy
After I ran that cab file (Disable Proxy) the Youtube app worked.
I have a HTC Diamond "1" with the same problem. After selecting a clip to watch I get the same message.
Unfortunately, I can't find a "proxy manager" on my settings.
So any other suggestions? Thanks.
I also have this issue on my Rhodium. There is no "proxy manager" setting anywhere I've seen on the device. Plus, my YouTube app doesn't even have accessible settings.
Im having a very similar issue but my youtube app opens displays todays top videos or whatever and it also searches and displays the results but when i tap to watch a video it just sits there loading until it finally says connection failed. I think a simple reinstall of the app would fix the issue but I cant find the cab anywhere except the new app which has horrible video quality but it works lol.
