I was wondering if anyone already tried to create a ROM wich is child friendly.
I have an old Wizard that I might give to my son of 5 to play with.
I also provided a SIM card into the device so that My wife or I can call him when he is at his grandparrents. But most roms provide so many applications and to easy access to the configuration, that it is too easy for my son to screw it up.
So I was looking for a ROM that has an easy menu with BIG buttons.
Most required items requested.
Windows Live Messenger
Games (like bubbe breaker, etc...)
Dailer with only programmed pictures (so he can not call to the bahamas : )
Configuration of the device should be possible after inserting a password.
Anyone any idea?

Bump great idea!!!
I really like this idea... really like it!
I suppose that with MANILA it is possible to set the contacts programs and and everthyng... I just don't know how to password protect the settings.
How smart is your 5 yearold?
Also, I know that the wizard was built to last, but how do you know he won't drop it?
I think that you should start collecting programs and games. I think that limiting the access to the settings can be done with initflashfiles.dat OEM_LANG.provxml.
You could access the settings via activesync or pocket controler on the computer, and you could also create shotrcuts to all the settings programs on a separate storage card.
If you know of any programs that limit settings for ppc let me know. I really like this idea!!

He is smart enough to watch closely my actions and to copy them directly. Even experimenting and learning from the results. This last thing bothers me, coz I do not want to spend every night to put everything in order.
But I can assure you that he does take care for it. From time when driving I already asked him to pick up the phone and he knows to take care.
I do not think this ROM should need much fancy things...
Call firewall is nice to block unwanted incoming/outgoing phonecalls. So having this in the autostart would be fine.
A replacement for the startmenu but with a password which then gives access to the config settings... (could not yet find anything like this)
On the today maybe 2 manila buttons which is contacts and applications (just a matter of configuration)
Windows Live (so he can send voiceclips in stead of typing)
Lot's of games (sandbox, bubblebreaker)
Browser with youtube support (yes, he knows to handle youtube)
Camera ( He likes to take ugly pictures of his younger brother)
all the rest like mobile office and calculater, ... can be left away...
Of coarse a good configuration of the buttons will be important too
Do you have any idea which should be included ?
Cheers,
SirSkull

Windows Live Messenger for a 5yo? Oh my...
Why not get him a mobile that was actually designed for kids of his age? I heard there is one on the market - makes calls to programmed numbers only, has a few games, plays music etc.
He fancys dad's phone and is keen on the games on it. So since I have a 2nd Wizard here where the screen is slightly scratched, I do not mind giving this to him. He knows how to use the messenger voiceclips, so when he is at home he can use messenger to chat with me. This would reduce the MobilePhone calling costs. And no, skype is no option since I am not aloowed to install this on my company pc + skype is blocked by the firewalls at my work.
Buy him a Nintendo DS. It'll be more expensive, but it'll also be a lot less work at your end, because I guarantee something awful like deleting system files will happen more often than you care to realize.
I foresee many flashings and re-flashings to this phone...
That said, I'd put a manila-flavored ROM on it, and unless you have an unlimited data plan, I'd load Modaco's NoData, lock out all data transmissions except the phone, and remove the shortcut to make NoData harder to find (along with any other settings-related functions. You can also hide the whole Settings directory in QuickMenu, and then turn it back on when you need to adjust something for him.
Parental Controls
I am thinking about givign my 13 y/o one of these as a cellphone... I have an 8925 and so does my older stepsone... MY 13 y/o needs a little more constant supervision.... I am not too concerned aobut bigger buttons and such.. but about child frendly as in parents can have some sort of parental password before the kids do certian things (like Vista does)... Say before he calls someone outside of his contacts list or adds someone to it.... makes a call after a certian time... or even limit the number of min he can use or something.. Any suggestions on any of that?
there is a way to get rid of the file explorer as well as the settings menu. without the file explorer you have no access to the windows folder... but you should also realize that you can not delete files that are in rom... however you still have access to the settings apps in the windows folder.
This is what I would do:
1: delete the shortcuts to file explorer and other program shortcuts and move them into a folder to a blank storage card.
2: set the last programs shortcut in the start menu to "total commander on this storage card. since the program can not be activated without the storage card inserted, you have no access to settings.
3. gather all of the "parental control programs" and post the cabs here on thos thread so that they can be cooked in to the rom, without the shortcuts... shortcuts can be made into a cab... or manual copy/paste shortcuts or even autorun CPY1/CPY2 to storage card upon hard reset (hardware buttons)
I think that the most important part for the parents to realize, is that the child should not be limited too much. this is an opportunity for these youths to get a first hands on experience of technology, as well as understanding of computers.
Up untill now these devices were too expesive to hand off to children, now that they have gotten old and cheap, they are perfect tools to help with a child developing their inteligence (problem solving, writing, counting, organization... etc)
there are enough repressed children without life exerience out there. no sex no drugs and no rock and roll unless it is 20 years old and have been tested and proven by Dysney Corp (who put phalic symbols in every movie)
dont be a fashist parent and keep in mind that kids need to learn from experience. I will not cook a rom that limits that.

Call Firewall v1.4 can block selected incoming and outgoing calls. It only needs a macro application in order to minimize (and maybe save) the application after it started up.

My son is free to experiment with my second device (my wife will become angry when she would read this. She thinks I making a geek of him. I call it technological self deployment )
As a mom of twin 8 year olds...
I cannot cook, however, having 8 year old twins, I know exactly what you are asking for. My kids are techies and love to play around with my wizard, so I think it is safe to say that I understand where you are coming from.
NTS made a WM6 rom quite some time back, which is crazy stable and fast. It is a dinosaur by today's rom standards, however, my kids mess with my phone and it has yet to freak out, crap out, or anything. I would be happy to upload it for you. It is pretty minimal to begin with, and if you add HTC Home, delete a few shortcuts, add one or two programs like tcpmp and call firewall, and some games, I think it would fit your needs. This rom is NOT fancy, does not have manilla, sliders, or any real bells or whistles--it is close to 2 years old, but again, it is crazy stable and seemingly twin proof. The rom is called Jaguar 3.1 if you want to search the threads for it to read up...the links are all dead though. I still have it on my wizard, and while I have tried updated roms, I keep going back to this one because it plays well with children.
Always happy to test this Jag 3.1 Rom. Maybe we can adopt this version into WM6.1
Crazy stable, childproof= yay Jag!!

This link is for Jag 3.1 rom. The rom download links are dead, but if you want to read about it...
As far as childproof roms go, I absolutely swear by Jag!
I can upload it if you want to give it a test drive.
Looks promising... Can you make the rom available too? I'll see what my son thinks about it then.

This is a link to the Jaguar 3.1 rom-- created by nottoosmart.
As I said, it is an older WM6 rom, without any real bells or whistles, but it is amazingly stable and kid-friendly. You can install HTC Home (the version for WM5 works best), call firewall, tcpmp for movies and cartoons (using an sd card for storage) and some games and it would be pretty much ready to go.
I do not know if Manilla will work on this rom as I have not tested it myself, but HTC Home can be customized, thanks to the program by emunutz.
It does support Google Maps, Skype, Skyfire browser and those types of "grown up" apps-- so just because it plays well with kids, doesn't mean it isn't capable of kicking ass.
Enjoy.
hi there...am a big fan of the vox....but the problem that i face after say 2-3 days of continuous use is the memory leak. it has abt 22 mb free when i soft reset, but after this time, has less than 10 mb remaining. i shut down programs regularly, use the hibernate function on smart toolkit, and i use sk tools lite to use the memory free function. could anyone solve this problem? i read somewhere that a rom upgrade may solve this issue. tried the htc website, it says the rom upgrade is not suitable for my device. can someone help? someone like dr. martin gonzo or frauhottellmann? r u there? my device details are below
CE OS 5.2.1236
Radio 4.1.13.41_02.88.90
ril version 2.002
Pls tell me which ROM is the most stable, if i need to update any thing else too that is available on this forum/ I have photo contacts pro v 5.05 andfacade 1.4.10 running in the background.
Oh i forgot. I use smart toolkit too
The ROM is 5.2.1236.17741
I would prefer a light ROM, as I dont use word mobile. I have documents to go instead.

Try fireburned's Clean ROM or fraun's Lite ROM, both of them are super fast and super stable .
Backup - some doubts
thanx.....downloaded it, will it work and install with my vox as per the details ive mentioned above?
my second query....im not too particular abt my messages and stuff, and ive just synchronised the data on my mobile to outlook ( contacts, tasks and appointments )....is this enough or must i properly back up everything else? pls lemme know. as ive never flashed a rom before.
also, will flashing a new rom delete the stuff on my storage card?

Search for PIM backup, that is a software which back up all your PIM information to Storage card, or whatever folder you wish. No flashing will not delete anything from the storage card. But be sure that you are not using Encryption on the SD Card.
thats ok...i have sprite backup with my phone. will have to reinstall it though/
my question is....is a fullback up necessary or will an outlook sync be enough? when i reconnect after the flash, active sync will set up a partnership again right? will that delete all the outlook data stored on my comp or will my comp refill the pim data back on to my device? thats what i want to know.
also, will the new rom significantly alter my battery life? am a doctor, and it may not be possible for me to keep charging my mobile when i am on rounds and so on
one more doubt, addicted2xda. will flashing one of these custom roms solve the memory leak issue? its driving me crazy. cant go 3 days without doing a hard reset. and how much will teh free memory be with say, fireburned lite rom?
Well after a couple of days you will of course have less RAM available. You always have to close apps in the task manager and use some RAM-free-up app! I use the function of sktools lite!

yes boss...i use sk tools lite too. but it doesnt make too significant a difference, with the end result that after say 3-4 days, memory dips to less than 8 MB, and voila! my phone hangs!
am now trying out fireburned's lite rom, seems good for now. lets see! any further ideas to minimise the ram leak?
Use the taskmanager - as frauhottelman said already - to identify the processes that grow over time. You can use the built-in, just change the view to "process" and sort by memory. WMPlayer or Audiomanager are memory hogs from my experience.
For debugging you may also want to execute "devicehealth.exe". This will create a decent summary of memory consumption to the root (or card-root). You may have to search for it (in the forum or or the web). It is a tiny tool from the SDK afaik.

have been using fireburned's rom, seems pretty stable. however, after doing a sync with active sync, the memory which was say 17 mb, dips to 14 mb or less. any hibernate function or say, the task manager or even the sk tools function brings it back to only about 15 mb or a little marginally higher. the more times i use activesync, the same problem occurs. say i use it three times, the memory lands up around 12 mb, after all programs have been shut down. and after using the hibernate function on smart toolkit. any ideas? did a search and found that it s a process called gwes.exe which hogs memory mostly. but this is guess is a system process and cant be shut down i suppose. any suggestions? ur take on this, frauhottellmann?
Still problem not solved!
hmm..tried using the ram free function on sktools. seems to actually decrease the amount of ram available!!! and with each use of active sync, the available ram decreases sharply. my wife has an imate spl, and the amount of ram remains constant around 25MB even after 10 days....anyone have any ideas? have read somewhere that it is a problem peculiar to vox. the problem with decreasing ram is, after 3-4 days, the dialler starts malfunctioning. i am able to make out the calls ringing, but no way i can pick itup. max, i can cut the call. it registers as a missed call....any body with any ideas out there? any way to cut the ram leak?
one more doubt,,,the old sk tools had an optimize wizard. the latest one seems to be lacking this feature. is there anyway that the active sync filesystem can be made read-only ?
Pretty strange. Are you using any third party software that may be causing the problem? Also note that after using activesync, it doesn't shutdown on its own. You have to manually shut it down to release the memory. Further try using the default home screen, instead of the sliding panel which comes with new 6.1 ROMs.
Because I normally have more than 20 MB free . No matter how long I have kept my device on.
Or better still, just reboot the device before going to bed .
yeah. i use photocontacts pro and smart toolkit in addition to microsoft voice command. and is it a good idea to keep rebooting the device daily? i thought the rom upgrade was supposed to fix that!and i love the sliding panels. the default homescreeen sucks

Sliding panel really drains the battery like hell. Its not a problem if you reboot your ROM daily. I flash my device (both), well almost once a week atleast . So that requires rebooting as well. I really don't know whats wrong, but I never had the RAM issue, try fireburned Clean ROM or fraun's lite ROM for a change and see if you find any difference
I have same problem with my htc vox
New here, I wanted to know how to get rid of TF3D, so I can install Mobile Shell and still have some memory. Could I do a hard reset to remove bloatware and then not tap the manilla.exe file?(or whatever file is TF3D)
Thanks for your help.

1 Flash HardSPL
2 Flash a clean winmo 6.1 or 6.5 rom. ( I used NRG 2.0 ROM )
3 Download or purchase SPB MS 3.0
4 Install Spb MS 3.0
5 Finished!
Why not just uncheck it under today items? How much ram can it use if it's not running? Also easier to get back if you want to use it. I like to run both ms and tf3d at times. just my .02

touche! no point in hard resetting...
I have same question, I'm more worried about Storage space, 3.0 is large, that eats into memory, meaning performance.
I realize I can uncheck it, but can it be removed without hard reset? If not, any implications???
go to All Setting -> System Tab -> Clear Storage. This will clear everythign off and set it back to the beginning. Remember this basically restoring factory settings. If you do that you will loss all appointments and contacts so back them up with spb backup or sprite backup... or just resync the device with your computer when you are done.
I don't really flash this device yet (I did flash my older 8125). I like to stick with the stock as much as possible... although I am close to doing a flash to get some added functionality.
Thanks,
SoBBie
I suspect he's asking to remove tf3d completely and reclaim the storage space used. Not just run it. If that's the case, the 4th post about installing a new rom is correct.
If you just don't want it to run anymore and are NOT concerned about the ROM space taken, then just uncheck it in the today menu and install SPB shell. Thats what I did.
I didn't flash a rom that doesn't have it in case I want to switch back or get bored with Mobile shell.

So does tf3d take up more mem than m. shell? MS is like 8mb. Side note: I'm not so sure the ms was ready for prime time yet as it is occasionally doing some weirdness to my Tpro. My saved layouts will suddenly dissappear, widgets I had set go away and I need to re-install. So I'm glad I have the tf3d just sitting there ready to go. Also, it does not integrate well at all with the spb pocket plus. I had to off load pp as it seemed to not be fully functional. With the old ms v2 I could run tf3d and shell both not so with the v3. I got it for the 50% off upgrade so not a big deal. I am kinda dissappointed tho.
I'm trying to install GPS Toggle(Google it....pretty neat)to the SPB Mobile 3 Lifestyle page. It Only installs to the Today screen of win mo 6.5 with titanium off. I want to know if there is a way to change the install location by using the RegEditor. Even a possible point in the right direction would be helpful at this point, already had to hard reset 5 times from playing around with it. Thanks in advance ppl.
I don't think it's going to help, and I think you're confusing your terminology. Install location basically differentiates between main memory and a storage card. It sounds like this is a today plugin and you want to convert it to a chome plugin. That may prove to be hard, lol. I suggest reading up on twolf's threads.
thanks man i dont even want it as a Chome plugin. i just want to be able to put it on SPB mobile shell
Hello all. New owner of an HTC Pure, and really liking it. This is my first time with a converged device (well, I had a BB Pearl, but it wasn't on a data plan) and while I'm impressed with all it can do, I'm a little confused. And of course, I like to tinker...
I'm trying to learn my way around things. I like the look of TouchFlo3D, but would like to add some functionality to it, for example, adding Tasks to the Home Screen, or making the Calendar screen more informative. But that's probably a bit down the road, and I'd like to understand How Things Work before monkeying around too much.
A few general questions, if I may.
1. What is a shell? From looking around, it appears a shell is an app that lets you interface with the OS. TouchFlo is a shell, right? It actually overlays the WinMo shell, is that correct? So when I use TF3D, I'm using one shell to tell another shell to issue instructions to the OS?
Remembering back to my Palm days, if any of you are familiar with zLauncher, would it be analogous?
2. Is there a way to mod the TF3D shell, to make it more useable? Or is it easier to download something like SPB. I really like TouchFlo, but would switch if it was necessary, or desirable. But wouldn't loading another shell take up more space and computing power on my phone?
3. I've seen the directions about adding a custom city to the weather tab using Manila. What exactly is Manila, and would I need it to make any mods?
4. I've noticed that when I check the Task Manager on my phone, after it's been on, the memory used goes up. For instance, when I turn the phone on, it's usually in the mid to high 50's. After a few hours, it will be in the 70's or even 80's. What's going on? Is this kind of like RAM creep that one experiences with PC's? So is it necessary to reset the phone occasionally to "clean things out", like rebooting a PC that's been on for quite a while?
5. Flashing a ROM. Are you actually loading a new OS into the read-only memory of the phone? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this?
Eventually, I'd like to get fairly deep into this (getting rid of all the AT&T bloat is pretty high on the "to-do" list), but like I said, I'm still learning my way around and would really like to get a firm handle on the basics. I appreciate any help y'all can give me.
Is this the wrong place to ask these sort of questions?
