recovering from a brick.. - G1 Android Development

I'm not sure how it happened, but i bricked her. It should be easy to recover hopefully right, because i have JF 1.3 rc30, and the engineering bootloader, anybody that can tell me what to do now?

DREAIMG.NBH would be the fastest way for me to answer this question.

i did the same thing!
well what i ended up doing was downloading the rc29 image (dreamimg.nbh) and putting it on my sd card then putting the sd card in my phone and then hold the camera button and power on! it wipes everything and you have to re update to jf modded rc 30 but its the quickest way for me! and like 20 mins later im back where i was....

thanks guys.

You have also fastboot flashed your system.img, userdata.img and your boot.img from a nandroid backup.

You think you BRICKED your phone...Post here!!!

oh no, oh no, what have i done??
I've created a little problem for myself. While at work I performed a wipe/restore on my phone. I have modified rc30 jf 1.3 and when my phone is booting up now I get stuck at the android screen. The green light near the ear piece comes on and a ringing can be heard from the speaker. I have tried to wipe again to no avail. Has anyone heard of this happening? Is it because I have a theme file on my sd card named update.zip? I know I can't be the only one to brick their phone!

Try reflashing JF 1.3. Did u create a backup?
I did not backup. I will reflash when I get home.

That should work. I had the same problem.
thanks, i need to hear that.
how would i go about using hard spl to bring it back from the dead?
Foolproof solution would be to use RC29 DREAIMG.NBH. More intricate solution is to fastboot flash your nand backups (provided you had the foresight to make backups in the first place).
What jashsu said. I nearly bricked my phone once but reflashing with RC29 was the quick and easy way of saving it.
i need help think that i am bricked
I was on 1.1 ADP JF with the mac 2.2 theme for 1.1 ADP i wanted to get back to the original theme so first i installed the restore theme thing on the fourms after this i have been stuck at the android screen when booting. i have tried to the wipe alt W but right now i am downloading the image file to get back to the original rc 30... can anyone help me out??? i really need to my phone tommorow and help would be much appreciated thank you
Assuming that you have the JF recovery utility, you should be able to copy the update.zip for RC30 to the sdcard (take the sd card out of the phone and copy update.zip to it), and apply the update from the JF recovery utility. You can get into the recovery utility by holding home+power when booting the G1. I hope this helps.
assuming if the above post don't get you up and running you will want to donwload the stock rc29 dreamimg file and copy that manually to your memory card and with the phone off. Hold down the camera button while turning on and you will get a grey screen the and should let you flash back to the original rc29 if you can't to an alt w whipe this would be the next thing I would recomend.
Just to clarify you said your phone is the adp - android developer phone, a phone that allows you to restore the phone to earlier states?
If this is the case you just need to grab a recovery image and reflash your phone by depressing camera on boot or using fastboot to restore your phone to an earlier backed up configuration.
If you don't have the developer phone, and infact have a rooted handset with a custom firmware such as JF your best bet would be as above to roll back to rc29 or rc07 if you're uk based using RC29 DREAMING.nbh -steps can be found here http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Root_For_RC30
The downside is this will require you to reroot your phone. May i suggest in future if you do NOT have a developed phone you install Nandroid and do regular backups before playing with your phone -details here http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f28/nandroid-v2-0-full-nand-backup-and-restore-tool-9336/
Let us know hopw you get on and if we can offer any further assistance.
ok thanks guys
i installed rc 30's official image to my g1 by power+camera and everything is fine besides being unrooted i think i will root back to ADP again because of its advantages but if i am the flash a theme once again how do i get back to original theme because im sorry but i still dont understand the steps needed to do this from a ADP 1.1 jf build ty
You should have tried updating back to the 1.1 ADP JF version you were on first, would have saved you alot of time.
Hey! I assume for the purposes of this post and on accout of your having dev phon firmware you know how to use fast boot. if not go to http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f28/nandroid-v2-0-full-nand-backup-and-restore-tool-9336/
Anyway if you restart your phone with the home button depressed alt b makes a back up, use fastboot to flash this to your phone and restore it to an earlier state!!!!
Can the G1 officially be bricked?
I know you can screw up and update or 2...but with the PWR + Camera thing and the Home + PWR update method...is there a way to officially brick the G1? or is it relatively brick-proof?
I wouldn't think any phone is brick-proof. Then again, the G1 does seem more "mod" friendly than others.
Flash a corrupt SPL and you will have a brick really fast

Try it really quick and please post your results lol
I might be wrong, but I think as long as we don't mess with the boot loader, it should always be able to start with camera-power

Buddy, u may have gotten a corrupted update.zip, jus bring your phone back with the original rc29 nbh file, and follow the jf 41 update instructions again... you should be fine. With that file safely on your cpu or sdcard you should be able to unbrick your phone at any time. Good luck pal

I have jf 1.41 on my phone, and when I try to enter bootlooader it goes to the same alt s, alt w option screen, what do I do from there, how do I get my phone to get past the flashing android, Im kinda stressin here.
If you can get to that screen try flashing with another update.zip off the SDCard
You will have to find another way to access your sd card, such as througha media reader, even a digital camera if that is what it takes. You need to put that DREAMIMG.nbh file back on your sdcard and flash it, and go threw the rooting process again. So find something you can use to access that microsd card with.

Fastboot Help (Rid me of my headach)

Ok, lets start from the beginning. I have a gt that had non-rooted rc33, i downgraded to rc29, rooted it, upgraded to rc30, and now to jf's rc33 1.41, obviously still rooted. Once I got to rc33 1.41 i finished re-installing all the programs i had lost along the way (going to rc29). Then I changed my boot images (splash1 and 2) using fastboot. Everything was fine untill i went to change my boot images again and powered on using camera+power and the grey screen pops up first since i left it on my sd card (dont remember what the grey screen is i just remember not to interupt it but im sure if youve rooted youll remember what im talking about), well instead of clicking the trackball i accidently hit the power button, wiping my phone once again. I went back to rc29 and rooted it (wasnt sure if i had to so i just did it (i had the time)) then back to the rc33 1.41 by jf. got all my programs back the way it was before. i noticed when it booted into rc29 the first time and everytime after that my splash1 screen was back to stock but my splash2 screen was the one i had put there. so i powered off after i got all my programs installed and went to change my first splash screen, and now once i exit out of the grey screen (yeah i know, still on the sd card) it goes to the RGB screen (the normal screen), not the skateboarding androids, and definately not fast boot.
My question: Without going back through the ENTIRE process all over again, how do i get my fastboot back? I may of missed it on the forums, but I promise, it wasnt for a lack of searching, LOTS of searching (and not just this forum). Plenty of forums tell me how to use fastboot, just now what to do to get it back...
Thanks in advance for your help..
(oh and if it makes a difference I recently installed a theme more details can be provided if needed)
Since i take it that you are already rooted.. then i think it should be easy.. just download the bootloader devs edition again and place it in your sd card and then go safety mode and update it again.. but i think the reason why its going to the gray screen when you press camera + power is becuase you may still have the dreaimg.nbh file in there.. i would delete that first.. then put the modified bootloader and then update it and see if that works... Those are my thoughts hope it help.. good luck

yes i know that its the dreaimg.nbh i just forgot what the name was, and yes i should definately delete it since its what got me in this situation to begin with lol
now i found the bootloader i need (i got bored and decided to root my girlfriends g1 while waiting for an answer and found out that i forgot to use the bootloader like i had before) and have it on the sdcard, named as update.zip, waiting to be installed, but before i do it, am i going to lose all of my programs again? i have 127 programs, many of them (like locale and such have settings edited) that i do not feel is worth having to go through a 3rd time
so not my only question is, when i hit alt+s am i going to wipe my phone again?
Oh and thank you for such a quick responce n8izzle, and another thing, why safemode?

No it won't wipe your programs if u install the boot loader. And by safe mode he meant recovery mode (i am sure). If u want to be on the safe side go to recovery mode first and then do a NAND backup by pressing Alt+B which will back up all your partitions if something should go wrong again. Then update bootloader.
So Alt+B first then Alt+S and then u should have fastboot again and also backup images of ur phone on ur SD card
hey sorry had to restart my computer i just got ubuntu .. but yea thats what i mean not safe mode but the other lol... but hope that you got it working if not you can pm me and i will walk you through it...
Yeah I didn't put 2 and 2 together than bootloaders wher part of the rc updates lol, it makes perfect sense to me now, how's ubuntu?
Oh and can anyone elaborate on exactly what's backed up with the backup tool in the recovery menu and how to restore it
(New to linux incase anyone was wondering, I've always wanted to get into it but every class I've taken for my certs for web development has been for windows os, so hang in there I'm a quick learner lol)
ubuntu is pretty cool i like it.. im not too familiar with it but i initially got it so i can partition my sd card... so i'm learning on this as well... if you are talking about backing up your phone with nandroid it works great... you can view the directions and all below... if you want i can help you step by step if you run into problems.. just pm me if you do...

bricked G1, really, but I don't give up

Hi guys, I finally decided to root my G1. I'm writing apps so I was going to leave it stock but sipdroid was released and I wanted to get a 1.5 image on there. I was following the tried and true downgrade to RC29 method to gain root when I ran into problems. I have read and read and read, searched high and low, but it may have to come to an end.
I "successfully" flashed RC29 onto my G1 (retail). Using a fat32 formatted 4GB card containing only the RC29 DREAIMG.NBH. It verivied the image, got through 100% progress, OK'd each item, gave me the successfull / complete message, asked to hit action key, great. Reboot.
Now, every time it hangs on the G1 screen. It still has the stock SPL and no recovery mode. I can still get to the bootloader mode if I want to flash again, or another image. I can also perform a wipe (and have).
Things I have tried:
-performing successfull wipes through booting with home+back
-reformat sd card, fat32.
-verify and compare md5sum of NBH image to same image from other sites
-tried RC29 image from multiple sites / sources
-check md5sum of image after copying it to card (using card reader)
-updating with recovery.img and update.zip but either it doesn't boot far enough or I can't yet because of the image or stock SPL.
-found an RC30 image and flashed it, same problem.
-Swapping my fido and tm sim cards, and without one
Things I need to try:
-another sd card, I may run out and get a 1 GB.
-look for a RC33 image but I don't think there's one leaked. I have seen updates to apply as update.zip but I can't do that in my phone's state.
Maybe there's something in pre-RC33 that tickles a problem with my phone?
Maybe something just messed up when I flashed RC29 for the first time, even though it got OKs all around.
I'm doing everything from my linux laptop as that's all I use. I'm in Canada, had to get my phone from ebay which cost me over $400 CAD. I would have gotten an ADP1 but the handling fees to here are rediculous. Expensive paperweight. I don't know if I'll have any luck getting a warranty replacement.
I was lucky enough to have JF and other's offering suggestions over IRC last night but as you see I'm still stuck.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Interesting, I've just read something from the list of changes in RC33, which I was running:
# G1 hanging at the G1 Screen
* Symptom(s): A small number of G1 devices hanging at the G1 screen during the initial power up.
I guess another option would be to wait / keep searching for a leaked RC33 DREAIMG.NBH.
Is there a way to generate one using nandroid on a phone with stock RC33 or is my imagination too wild?
You need root to create a nandroid backup...
Wait how long do you let it sit on the G1 screen? I've had an instance or two I believe when I first got root where when first booting up it took forever.

I've probably left it at most for about 20 minutes. I've head of G1's hanging on the flashing android screen then recovering, but not on the G1 screen. I also don't want to drain my battery, even though I have two. I'm not sure my batteries will charge in this state and I don't have a seperate bettery charger (maybe time to get one).

I would venture to say that it would... mine charges on recovery mode, off, in boot loader... even when hooked up via USB and the laptop is OFF
In fact despite the lack of time on the battery I've been impressed how easy it is to get power to it... I just carry around a micro usb cable, 15-30 mins power here and there keeps me going round the clock

Over lunch I got a 1 GB card, found a windows box to format it fat32, copy RC29 DREAIMG.nbh to it, flashed my G1 with is, success, reboot, still hangs.
I'd love to get my hands on an official RC33 image, or a diag image that will work on this phone. I found the service manual also, it has links to images on the HTC site but of course they're password protected.
If I can't RMA this thing maybe another option is to get one for parts and build a hybrid.
Format the card for FAT (not 32)
Load the IMG file on there and try it again. I've seen problems with a Fat32 formatted card.
It is not a card problem if your update is found and flashed. Wish i had more answers for you, but at least you can stop looking down that road.
JF said to try getting into recovery and applying an official update to see if that works. The updates can be found on my wiki (links in my sig) if yo need them.
Also he just told me that there might be a RC30 nbh file floating around on these forums. If so you might try that. I would look for yo but I have to head off to work
Thanks, I do have an RC30 image, and have tried it with the same results. I also have an official RC30 to RC33 update but haven't been able to get into recovery mode to apply it. I'm crazy busy at work for the next few hours but will try again avter that.
Thanks.
I've tried a zillion times to get into recovery mode, not gonna happen.
Also, now I can't even perform a wipe by holding home+back+power on boot.
I can still flash nbh images but nothing available to me will work. When I load DREADIAG.nbh every time it does something with the radio it hangs until I hit end to cancel it.
It is my current theory:
As in my second post to this thread my G1 suffers from a problem that was fixed in RC33. This is causing my G1 to hang since I now have RC29 (and RC30, etc). It is likely that the problem has to do with the radio (or radio image).
There's no way for me to update the radio image right now. I need a newer (>= RC33) nbh to load.
Suppose my G1 is hanging on the radio device. As in the service manual, page 22, I unplug the UMTS coaxial cable to disconnect the device.
Is the UMTS the radio or is it just for 3G?
If it IS the radio, and I disconnect it, maybe it won't hang on boot. I could get running, root, update the radio image, reconnect the radio.
It's a long shot but what do you think?
In my opinion, you should restore to rc29 nbh and send it to t-mobile for repair..

Possible Bricked Mytouch

So I went thru the root process shortly after it got figured out. great work to everyone. I had everything running smooth today I did the daredevil process to get back to 32b and all was well. I loaded a hero rom on there and did not repartition my sd card first so was obvious that it was running too laggy. decided to do a restore from last backup to go back to the 32b rom and realized after it was done that there was no backup since I went from 32a. now I am stuck at the red vodafone screen and cant get passed it for obvious reasons. I can get to fastboot but that is it and unfortunatley I am at work so cant update drivers to get sdk tools working to fastboot anything. I dont think I am totally screwed (since I can get to fastboot) but wanted to see if anyone had some ideas. I can download files and transfer them to my sd card as I have a reader with me (just in case)
You should just be able to boot a recovery image via fastboot and reflash a 32b ROM from the SD card. If you can get to fastboot, you're not bricked
guess it was a good thing I created my goldcard on a 128mg sd card that I had and kept the goldcard on that just in case still have that with the sappimg on it. just in case
