Simple open WiFi networks scanner? - General Questions and Answers

Is there any simple util, which shows all actually available wifi networks and possibly even test, if they are open and providing internet connection?
It would be great help if you get into area with dozens of APs and looking for some free internet

WiFiFoFum is pretty good, also gives GPS coordinates of the connections so you can drive right to their door step.

Navizon - GPS Navigation Redefined

Calling everyone who has a Phone or Wifi enabled Pocket PC!
Ever got lost with your PDA and realised you left your GPS Receiver at home? Do you still want to navigate in big cities when you lose GPS signal? Or hell, do you just hate the fact that HTC does not integrate a GPS Receiver in their phones yet?!
Well, Navizon is the coolest application I've found in a long while. You can navigate using Wifi or GSM!? How kewl is that?
http://www.navizon.com/
Spread the word. As more people join, more GSM Towers and Wifi Access Points pop up all over the place. If your area isn't covered yet, just simply hook up to a GPS Device and it'll find and plot all the Telephone Masts and Access Points (WEP or Open). Then disconnect the gps, and become set free.
The greatest thing about Navizon is that you can use it as a Virtual GPS Device for your navigator (eg TomTom), which lets you navigate using just GSM or Wifi singals.
It has some other kewl features like seeing where your phone is online; great if your phone gets stolen, or to check on your kids.....(or wife!? - let's not go into that debate)
THE BEST PART IS - IT IS FREE!

Wifi Spots map

Ok, im trying to find an app... here is my idea:
I travel a lot, and sometimes, i want to connect to a public wi-fi hotspot....
Is there an app that tells you, over a map, where to locate wifi hotspots?
It would be nice if it were somethingg for offline use, since thaat, if you are looking for a hotspot, may mean that you have no internet currently..
Thanks!!

WiFi Internet connection scanner

Anyone found/got an app that scans for open WiFi networks? I don't mean ones that find networks unprotected by WPA or WEP - I mean search for networks that when connected to, actually provide an open connection to the internet...
I'd love to see one too. I'm too lazy to test all "open" networks everytime I'm in a foreign city. Wandering around looking like i'm searching for more beer to chug down.
Found one, but not free

issue: switching between access points in the same wifi network

i'm dealing with this weird issue,
i have set up a wifi network in my home consisting of a router and a repeater, and they have now eliminated the dead spots in my home.
I tested whether mobile devices can switch to the nearest access point when they are moved, while they are connected to the wifi network
laptops switched to the nearest access points as they were moved
unfortunately my arc was not able to...it depended on the same access point as it moved away, even if i keep it next to the repeater it would not pick it's signal.
this would happen the other way around as well if i connect via repeater and bring the phone near the router it would not pick router's signal
any work-a-rounds
HELP!!
Also running doom kernel i had to flash the wifi modules could this have affected in anyway
Sent from my LT15i using XDA
I know this post is a bit old...but a good solution for this issue is Best Wifi:
Description
Do you have a WiFi extender in your home or office, or even a second WiFi Access Point Name (APN)? You do? Then ‘Best WiFi’ is for you!
‘Best WiFi’ is a lightweight application that automatically switches between saved APNs based on their signal strengths. So if while you are pacing in the office or walking around at home, and the signal strength drops below the pre-set level, ‘Best WiFi’ will go through your saved APNs and automatically connect to the one with the best signal at the time.

This app works well to switch between different saved SSIDs that are listed in Android and has eliminated the issue of losing connectivity on my home network due to my phone staying connected to a weak signal and losing its ip address/not surfing.
Thank you
Same problem here, but this app does not do make any difference
Useful app, you deserve a "thank you"
