SMS to stored to the sdcard - G1 Android Development

I was wondering if there is a way to have your text go to the sdcard instead of on the phone? I've noticed that once threads get to about 200 the messaging program slows down, so I have to delete the thread. Having the messages go straight to the sdcard would be a lot better.

Wouldn't fix it. The application would still be loading them, just from a different source. The fact that it's loading them is what's slowing it down, where from doesn't matter.
Back them up with txtract (it's on the market) and delete the threads.

Oh yeah your right, didn't think about that. Oh well.

Or you could use Chomp SMS if you're not. It seems to handle threads with a massive amount of texts in them quite well. A lot better than the stock messaging app in my opinion.

does chomp save to the sdcard messages? Cauyse if you dont delete them in the default one after 2 months of heavy texting its like 13 mb..lol

bump for a solution to this problem. I am a heavy texter and its kinda frustrating to not have a history of the conversation. Especially when there is only a few long threads.

Chomp does not handle large threads well either, it starts to slow once you get past the 200 mark

what he said, my backup also does this,
also new app called sms backup automatically backs up sms to gmail account at set intervals worth a try,

K9sms does a fantastic job with lots of sms messages.

I had about 600 in there before I wiped to install JFv1.41 and it scrolled 100% smoothly.

Not for me. I have several threads well over 200 and it still runs very smoothly. Only time i get hiccups is when I get a mms in the thread, then it might slow down until I get a new sms or two.

Replace all your default apps. want it?

Would you guys want a simple pack that would replace your default g1 apps automatically with better versions?
There are enough now where it would be a good idea.
Apps to be replaced:
Messaging replaced by ChompSMS.
Browser replaced by Steel.
Contacts replaced by Phonebook.
Alarmclock replaced by Klaxon.
Camera replaced by SnapPhoto.
I've talked to the developers and made sure that these apps are all standalone. Phonebook syncs on its own with your google contacts. Chomp receives texts independent of messaging.
It would be relatively noob friendly. If you were able to push your caches to the sd card, this would work fine.
If ChompSMS could handle MMS messages it might be a good idea, but as it stands I just removed it because it kept crashing on me anytime I even so much as looked at it wrong.
Hm. Good point with chomp. But I don't actually do mms messages. That's what email is for.
I was just thinking about this a few minutes ago. Mainly to replace the camera app with snapPhoto, and messaging with Chomp (never had any probs with chomp).
That's what I was forgetting. Snapphoto. That's now on the list as well.
You see, that would be nice if any of those apps worked decently...
The only halfway decent one you mentioned was chomp. The only stable thing you mentioned was SnapPhoto.
Phonebook is very slow and way too unresponsive to replace the contacts app, not to mention it has no option to set individual ringtones yet.
Steel is nice and all, but lacking BASIC functionality. For example on the stock browser when you go to a youtube page it gives you an option of playing through the youtube app. Steel does not, so it just leaves you not being able to watch shows.
Klaxon is extremely buggy. For example when in keyboard mode half of the klaxon screen is chopped off. Also when hitting snooze it usually takes a couple tries to put it to sleep.
Its a good try, but not quite ready yet.
I would definitely appreciate this. I'd never heard of steel before you mentioned it.

everything is entirely functional. steel gives you the option of opening it up in the viewer. phonebook is extremely quick and klaxon rapes the basic alarmclock.
As you can see from the responses, the problem is going to be that most people like and regularly use some but not all of those programs(for me it's steel and snap-photo, cause I like the normal contact manager and messaging, etc), so 1 package that replaces all of them won't be worth it for 90% of people. Would separate packages replacing 1 system app each be possible? Then people could pick and choose which ones they want.
This is a great idea once these apps mature a little more.
Like other have said, MMS support is needed in ChompSMS before it's a viable replacement for the built in messaging app.
I have problems every morning with Klaxon hitting the Off button. It rarely responds on the first hit.
I'm still having trouble seeing where Phonebook fits in as a replacement for the default phone app. It doesn't feel like a complete app yet. Exact Call Log is far better in my opinion, and faster. I know it doesn't have an integrated dialer, but for the logging portion, it's superior.
SnapPhoto is a decently solid app. I would have no qualms about replacing Camera.apk with SnapPhoto.

it might take me a couple days, but i could throw together a program that shows u a checklist and you select what replacements you want and what you dont.
thanks for the decent criticism.
Steel is a great browser. It also lets me download whatever file type I want, unlike the default chrome lite.
so it's decided.
I'll put up a little prog that allows you to choose which apps youd want defaulted from that list and it'l be installed automatically.
expect it within the next couple days.
I'm pretty sure snapphoto isn't standalone. When I replaced the stock app with it. I got force close errors in the area where you'd normally share/save. Also you lose the stock picture viewer, which not essential since you can use a file viewer, though it is a lot easier to use thumbnails then reading file names. But I know bratag updates it frequently so perhaps something has changed since I tried it. In fact I hope you can do it, I'll be following closely to see if its possible.

Yeah. If you delete Camera.apk then SnapPhoto starts acting up. If you delete Email.apk then Gmail no longer appears in the "Recent Apps" list when you hold the Home button.
Deleting Alarm.apk and the Amazon MP3 app doesn't seem to have any negetive effects, though.
For the snapphoto issue, I removed camera.apk. named snapphoto.apk camera.apk and pushed it into the system apps folder. That's what I am going to be doing with all the other apps itself. The core is designed to run with the default apps in mind, but it doesn't care what the app is. It just cares that its where its supposed to be.
You won't be seeing your apps named steel and everything.
Steel will be called browser, chomp = messaging and so on and so forth.
Removing the defaults entirely and not replacing them causes instability.
a little update. just threw together all the vb coding to set up the exe that would create and run the batch file specifically for what apps you want replaced.
the OP has all the options that are listed. expect it tomorrow.
btw. chomp just got autorotate.

Question...how would we get the updates for these apps? Like, say, if chomp decided to support MMS in the future.
Either one of two ways. You can replace the .apk in the folder I give you with the new version and simply run the .bat file again, or you can just wait till I reupload it with the updated versions.

WM 6.5 Excessive freezing while text messaging

Someone else brought this to my attention, and I feel that this post belongs here and not in ROM development because I have noticed it with several WM 6.5 ROMs.
My AT&T Fuze freezes A LOT, when I text message. It happens explicitly while I'm trying to browse my inbox and am receiving a text message at the same time. I'd say about 40% of the time I receive an incoming SMS, my phone locks up for a good 30 seconds or more. Does anyone else experience this issue? The ROM I am currently running is an EnergyROM build that is a little bit older, but has the titanium configuration only (I guess that means no Manila, or TouchFlo3D?...not sure about the names, but its optimized for stability and minimal resource consumption) but it still freezes up beyond belief. Let me know if this sounds familiar, or if there's a fix for it!
Do you have lots of SMS in your inbox? Mine was doing this when I had 3000ish. Just backed them up and deleted them; now it's running fast as anything.

Yes i got this kind of issue too and have more than 3000 sms in my box. i recently updated my phone to WM6.5. before there was no problem.
so perhaps i should delete a couple of sms. i wrote a similar reply in another thread (in a rom development thread, which i can't link to)
greetz
I only have about 350, nowhere near 3000 text messages It's prety un-useable at this point with the phone locking up so much. I guess all I can do is try to clear all my text messages and try new ROMs until it goes away. I did a forum search in ROM Development and found a similar post about freezing while browsing all SMS messages in the romeos thread and that described what I'm experiencing, although that other person was the only one who experienced the same issue as me.
Thanks for the heads up guys.

Go SMS app using a lot of RAM

ive been using GO SMS for quite some time, but the last couple of updates ive noticed the app using ALOT of RAM. ranging from 50mb to 250mb(monitored this using system panel app) in turn causing my phone to freeze and requiring either a hard reset or battery pull? anyone else experiencing problems with this app. i love the app and im sure its a simple bug fix, but just wanted to know if anyone else had similar problems
also i did try running go in 'lite-mode' and still it ate up a lot of ram
Hey Goldenman,
I'm using GoSMS and GoLauncher. I've not had any freezing.
I haven't really been paying attention to the Ram that the progrms are taking.
I need to keep an eye on that. I will say this; after the GB update, I don't have the free RAM that I thought I would.
I use GO SMS & the Go Launcher too, & i have noticed it using more memory, but mine hasn't peaked that much, hopefully they will address it cause they're good about weekly updates.
I'm using Go launcher and Go SMS with no issues. My current memory with go SMS is 2.5 Meg.
Are you up to date? They released like 4 or 5 minor updates in the last 2 weeks or so irc. Go and gb have been sweet as on my phone.

i uninstalled it this morning to see if maybe it was just me, but ill reinstall and run it for the better part of the day and see how it goes. go makes great products i would hate to stop using them ... i also use go contacts and no problems with that. i used to use go launcher but i dont find it as snappy as launcher pro ill report back
after a day of use with the new update i still find the ram use of go sms to be pretty high (75mb-100mb) ... granted i send/recieve on average 150-250 texts a day ( i get a lot of notifications from espn, twitter, etc) i still dont think the RAM use should be that high? any ideas? they said the bug was fixed but im still experiencing high ram use?
Go SMS Freezing Phone
I'm having the same issue where my phone freezes up and needs the battery pulled and/or a cache reset to get back up and running. My GoSMS has over 1600 messages in it, which I assume should not be a problem because there are a lot of people who like to store their old messages. What can we do to fix it?
Do you guys regularly close the program (long press back key)?
I find Google voice begins to lag a bit and eat ram if you text a lot, but just simply force closing it yourself seems to "reset" the ram it's using.
I don't use go SMS, just thinking maybe it relates to how it happens with Google voice.

This is most likely the problem because the app will cache all your texts you've looked at when open. It so you can scroll through them easier. So if you text or get 100+ texts in a day it's bound to flood your ram. If you close the app fully then it will clear the cache and the next time you load it up you will have to have the app load them manually in order to see older texts.

Although i do notice that after the last update the program keeps running in the backgoundand has to be knocked off by task manager.
I read some sources that handcent has become bloatwarish... and i do not like setting up an account with them..... I a can do without anotheronline presence...

It's because the app stores your conversations in memory so when you go to read them it won't take any time to load. The more texts you make in a day the more it has to load. To counter this you can kill the app in the middle of the day and don't try to load older parts of the conversation. Also deleting texts every once in awhile helps

I think they're right, about it keeping old messages in memory so you can access them faster.
I have around 4k total messages, and GOSMS never uses more than 25 mbs, usually uses around 21. Running it normally with ICS theme and my own backgrounds, if that helps any on the usage.
Sent from my amazing G2X running Bionic Reloaded v1.2.1
Go sms shouldnt be doing that. Save your "user defined" settings for your themes and just uninstall it completley and reinstall then restore your theme settings and you should be fine... I was using the go chat and go fb apps back in the day but i found them to be a huge battery hog..
I also only run go sms on normal mode without go chat...
I used GO SMS for a long time until it did the same thing for me and started eating an abnormal amount of RAM. Was never able to figure out why.

[Q] Maximum number of messages/sms?

Hji
Is there a maximum number of messages per conversation?
I've got 179 conversations holding ~20k messages. The longest thread is 5,5k and it doesn't work. The loading takes more than 10 minutes. The second longest thread is nearly 2,5k and loads completely fine.
I googled a bit but didn't find a solution for this though 5k was mentioned in many places. Is that true?
I'm using the Sense 4.0 default messaging app.
If 5k is the limit, how can I easily delete messages from beginning of the thread? Or are there any other solutions?
Thanks a lot in advance!
check apps settings, I think there was possible to set "limit". Dont have my S now, cant tell u where it was.

General settings of SMS has "Delete old messages" option which gives you possibility to delete messages per conversation. When it's tapped and you try to set the limit, it gives you range of 10-5000.
So according to this, 5000 is the ultimate limit which the phone/ICS/Sense can hold comfortably? Is that right or are there any solutionts [to keep the messages in the conversation, they're of course backed up]?
If the limit is 5k per thread you might want to look at SMS Backup and Restore. You can export the messages to XML and maybe modify the XML with a text editor to hold the "oldest" 5k messages of a particular thread in a different thread.
1. You make a XML backup with the app
2. Edit the backup on your computer to replace the phone number in the overflowing thread to a different one
3. Wipe the entire message contents off the phone or even just selectively the thread in question
4. Restore the messages through the app and that way they should be put into the new thread you modified the XML with.
That way you could hold all the messages on the device at all times, but not in the same single thread I think.
Thanks psych0t1c! That sounds like a good idea and will surely work.
But I just came up with this third-party SMS app GoSMS Pro. Weirdly it does NOT have the problem of conversations longer than 5k messages. It loads them as fast as all the other, shorter ones.
So the limit must be in HTC Sense's messaging app. Or is it the default ICS app in One S?
Anyway, problem solved! Lets see if I stick to GoSMS as it got pretty nice other features too or if I follow your suggestion.
Sorry to bump a slightly old thread, but having the same problem with my sensation, 8k on one thread and seems it can't open the thread, and screws up all the others until I restart the phone, though handcent works fine. Probably something to do with being a port!
A develops input to this would be cool! Is there any way of hacking the apk to allow more messages to be stored? it's obviously not a problem with loading them as the sensation loads 3k conversations as quick as 1k ones...
Sorry to bump this old thread, but is there a solution to this? Or do we have to actually back it up and start a new thread?
Thanks

[Q] Deleting LARGE sms threads. Help!

So, I have a problem.
Sometime last year I got in the habit of backing up all my text messages with Titanium and restoring them across all the roms I flash. I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 now, but some of these texts are from back when I had my S3. So I have been restoring some of the same sms threads for almost a year now. There are alot of people that I text work related stuff to every night, and it's nice to be able to look back and see previous messages, as alot of the threads have pertinent information. Most of them aren't that large but there is one that I really want to delete (from my ex girlfriend) that was about 5 months worth of messages, almost 4500 texts that I really want to delete as it is just taking up space and there is no reason for it to be there. I use Go Sms Pro as my texting app and it works great for me.
So I thought nothing of just going in there long-pressing the thread and hitting delete. But all it did was hang with a prompt "deleting.." for about an hour, then froze and force closed. And when I rebooted the damn thread was STILL there. Every last message. So of course I tried the stock Samsung messaging app next, it did the same thing. Hang for a loooooong time then froze and force closed. Then I tried Super SMS quick delete off the play store. Also no dice.
Now I know I could just wipe/reflash and start from scratch on Text messages but I really don't wanna do that. Like I said, there is important information in some of the threads that I really don't wanna lose.
I know that messages are stored here: ./dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.telephony/mmssms.db
./data/data/com.jb.gosms/databases/gommssms.db but is there anyway I can edit that database to delete those? Or something else?
So can anyone advise me on this? I am a reasonably well-acquainted Android power user and can use adb well and follow directions.
I did do quite a bit of googling and found lots of people with the same problem and no solution.
I also searched through quite a few threads here on XDA but they were all two to three years old and not much in the way of solutions either.
Some help here anybody?
