Before you suggest i change the battery.. it's just fine.
the problem started the day i flashed WM6 (over a month back) and has only started to bug me lately as my phone died on me 3 days in a row.
basically the moment the battery level gets down to 40-50% the phone just dies.. i could reset it and it powers up for a second or so then it dies again.
i flashed WM5 back.. and the phone was working fine even if the battery level reached 10% (i get a warning bubble but it doesn't just die on me!)
i've searched around and noticed the only suggestions were to change the battery, which seemed kinda useless as i'm almost sure the problem is somewhere in WM6 power management/battery handling.
any comments?
Try another WM6.
If you used Helmi's/Jwright's try DarkForce's/PDAVIET, or vice versa.
Mate I can get mine to die at 90% battery just by switching WIFI Bluetooth and opening a CPU intensive app (Google maps/Tom-Tom).
I’ve ordered a new battery and its coming next week so I will see if this is any better.
This is more than likely a Current problem, an in the battery cant supply enough amps for the phone to function properly, im almost certain that the WM6 ROMS do cause more current to be drawn from the battery but it is most likely that this is just highlighting that the battery is on its last legs.
Ill post back when the new one comes, If its doesn’t fix my problem I will be flashing back to the standard WM5 ROM to do some tests.
its probably the battery
i had the same problem. a new battery fixed it. it would die at 45% but now works all the way down to 5%.
new batt or borrow one from a friend to test.
I have seen the same thing on the BA fora as well: It's not that the whole batery is dead, but some of the cells in the battery are.
There it was also fixed with a new(er) battery...
I had to add a comment
I use a Exec with WM6 and i have a MDA Pro that i keep trying different roms on so i can use and mess with it and at the same time keep my sort of stable exec for work.
i do swop batteries between phones and so on, i cant say what roms i am useing when this happen but i have the same problem on the MDA Pro 40-45% it shuts off, reset and it starts for a second then shuts off, so i then put the battery from the exec ( charged ) in the MDA and away it goes my exec happly sits there at 40 or so % and will go down to 0 flat.
So its not the battery its the phone, but as said by someone else it could be dependent on what rom i am useing at the time
It is the battery..100%...pls buy a new one or try exchange from yr friend..nothing wrong with the Phone..
I tested every wm5 and wm6 roms and i have two batteries: one dies at 35% while the other never dies but gives warnings on the red side.

I still think the main problem is the battery.
But I think WM6 just uses more power intensively then WM5 does. That would be the reason the phone dies.
Mine always goes back on again but then dies booting the OS.
Had the same problem with old PDAVIET rom
Hi, had the same problem with the old PDAVIET ROM 2.08 somethign or other, but since upgrading to 2.10.02, everything is back to normal, and lightning fast.
Try the newer ROM, and then see if the same happens, and if it does, then it is the battery which is definately causing the problem.
Kevin
I have read somewhere in these forums that when the Networks release their official ROMs for upgrades they all clearly state that you should ensure your battery is at 100% charge as when you run the ROM upgrade the battery management resets its self to the level of the battery.........ie it assumes 100% but if your battery is at only 50%, then 50% becomes what it believes to be 100% therefore half the battery life.
I have to kind of agree with this because my first WM6 upgrade I was so eager to do my M5000 had only been on charge for 10mins or so and after the upgrade battery life was awful, however since then I upgrade only after my M5000 has been at 100% for about 30mins and since have not had any issues wahtsoever with battery life
Hope this helps

I thought it was because when you put your device into BL and flash it to a new rom, during the upgrade the phone won't charge.
So if you update with only 10% battery the device could turn off during the flash, and that would be a bad thing.
So they state (advice) to charge it to 100% before flashing.

Wrong. The previous poster is 100% correct. Better charge your battery to 100% before flashing.
What should I do if I had ROMed my Uni not in 100% bat.?
Your PDA needs to be fully charged because during the flashing the battery is not charging. So if your phone runs out of battery before the upload has finished you are screwed.
I never believe that the state of the battery is been used as the 100% level of your battery during flashing. I make elektronics myself, the battery level is always measured elektronically.
I had the same issue. I fix it with a new battery and works fine since then.
A bit of both
WM6 does use more current compared to WM5 and most of us have been torturing our Uni's with all the flashing we do (We don't use them as a phone much more of an intellectual playfield) . Also most of us have had the Uni for a year and some longer. My XDA Exec is 2 years and T-Mobile MDA Pro a year in sometime. The batteries are a bit older and unable to supply the increased power as before. I do have this problem if I use the older batt on WM6 and the newer batt works just fine. But then again the older batt works fine on the MDA pro (unchanged with original MDA Roms).
Cheers
Battery
Hi,
i was suffering from the same batery issue in the last 10-12 months, and let me share my experinces. After my original battery started to die first at 20% and finally at 50% i bought a new one. I read tonns of articles about LI-POLymer batteries and tried o follow as it was written. The result : after 4 months my new battery is in the same state. I bought 2 other. When i started to use the first, i had always recharge it between 10-20%. Now this battery dies at 12-15%. I let my latest battery to go down to 3 % ALWAYS and after 5 months NO PROBLEM AT ALL!.
So my experience:
-let the bttery go down. I don't care what other experts say about the characteristic of Li-Polymer. For me it seems that practice is different.
-NEVER,NEVER,NEVER cahrge the battery if it is not empty. In my car if I want to use my UNI for listening music or GPS then i REPLACE MY GOOD BATTERY with the old one, and then i use the car charger. With my laptop i use only BLUETOOTH connections
-ALWAYS USE original charger. No laptop, no car charging
-If i do an upgrade for any ROM i ALWAYS DO THE UPGRADE WITH THE OLD BATTERY.
-USE at least 2 batteries, one is always charged fully, and if the other goes down you can replace it quickly
I am sure that there are many experts, who can tell me why i am wrong, but the pratice seems to work for me. And i have not found any experts who could explain these strange situations with UNI. Now I have 3 batteries. All is about 10 months old. One dies between 30-50%, the other dies always at 10-12% and the last always at 2-3%.
crikey, the device is big enough as it is without carrying around more batterys. Mine's starting to die at 70% now. When it reboots it seems to die when the radio stack is activated. Had it for 13 months now my stylus falls out too had to put cellotape around it which has sorted it.
Just waiting for three(uk) to bring out the tytn so i can move over with their x-series stuff!!! woohooo!
I've had mine about 13 months now and it started dying at 40% left then 60% then 85% (of battery left!). I bought a new battery and 3 days later without charging it's still on 65% left
my o2 xda is running tnt wm6 for a long time now with no problems but recently my battery has started draining super fast like right infront of my eyes it drops percent numbers. i run battery status but that has never bugged the battery before. i also tried switching batteries with two of my friends and their phones run fine but mine drains fast. i have charged it with both the computer and the charger. it charges super slow and upon charging when i restart it the battery drops something like 20 percent or more instantly. could this be a virus? i factory resetted my phone and formatted my memory card but im still getting this issue. please any help would be much appreciated!

try other ROMs.
the fact of the matter is that ive been using this rom for so long without problems and this battery charger thingy just started a few days ago. could this be hardware problem?
Time for a new battery. Try nothing else until you have replaced it, with a new one, not one from another phone.
new battery really? u mean a battery from another phone doesnt do? and yes my battery dies very fast even my friends battery in my phone. cudnt this be a problem in my phone then? cause its his battery
Its definately a battery issue.
Check out this thread and I think you will relate: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=353780
Then go to eBay and buy an new OEM replacement for like $10 shipped. I think I paid $8 for mine.
I personally think it is a bug.
On three separate occasions using various roms, my battery would drain from 100% to 0% in an hour. I would reset everything, recharge and it would run normal without problems.
I do not know what causes this but it does appear to be a software glitch, at least in my case.
try to hard reset your device and then test (after backup your data).
this can give you the clear reason (in case of the rom was running well with you).
good luck
try another radio!
i had the same issue, but it stop draining after i ordered the new battery
I suspect that it is not the battery or the unit.
its right said:

Actually I am suddenly having the same problem with a brand new battery on a brand new Wizard.
I just loaded the newest Mfrazz Rom which seems to be fantastic in its applications, speed etc. however immediately on loading the ROM, my battery does get hot in normal use and drains to 30% in a normal day. I have even loaded the IRDA disable cab to no particular effect.
Is there some specific procedure to which you are referring for hard resetting the Wizard? I assume you don't just take out the battery?
Dead battery
Lithium batteries can be killed rather easily. I know from rc helis. Most mobile phones use lithium-ion batteries. Helis use lithum-polymer batteries but they have pretty much the same charactoristics. li-poly is a little more volitile, they can and will explode if you charge or discharge too much or too quickly. If you over charge, you kill it. If you over drain, you kill it.
If you are in a place where you get little or no signal turn off the radio. It will discharge quickly if it's searching for a signal. Also if you are not using the bluetooth or wifi turn them off, same thing. That's why they provided the Comm Manager. Try not to let your charge get below 20%. Definately don't let it run completely out or stay that way long.
A dead lithium battery will not hold a charge at all. Just like you see, the numbers dropping off quickly. It will charge fast too.
(Snot the battery)

Looking at it afresh, it isn't the battery which is heating up on installation of this ROM, it is the unit itself. The battery seems to be remaining at a comparatively normal temperature though the heat generation does drain it very quickly as I said.
Not sure that this problem has ever been addressed before on these boards? It may be something to do with not flashing to a manufacturer's ROM before flashing to Mfrazz's new one?
Has anyone ever seen these symptoms before?
In addition to some of the other posts ,you could check this :
WM6 may need to "learn" the battery levels again.
Try FULLY discharging & recharging your battery 3-4 times.
If this doesn't make things better, maybe you should check if you are running anything strange in the background...

Lithium batteries don't recover like ni-cad. Spend the $10 and solve the problem. DONT EVER FULLY DISCHARGE A LITHIUM-ION BATTERY. That is the quickest way to kill it.

As far as I am aware it is difficult to FULLY discharge one of those batteries in the Wizard? The unit starts giving error messages when it gets to the 15% level and some time thereafter shuts most of its functions down to prevent this. Whenever I have had problems with these units getting hot and even discharging and shutting down, the battery level never seems to be at 0% when I plug it in again. I have never thereafter found any permanent damage to the battery.
I think we should address the problem which seems to be in issue here which is that somehting in the OS is causing the battery to discharge as opposed to replacing the battery and watching the problem continue. At least, that was MY problem.
I am obviously not saying batteries don't die. All I am saying is that for a lot of users, the problem may lie elsewhere. Meanwhile I have flashed back to T-Mobile and re-flashed the newest Mfrazz which SEEMS to be quite VoIP friendly and overnight the unit doesnt seem to have heated up.
since i cant order a battery from where i live i tried reflashing my phone and memory card and i think that fixed it. maybe in my case its an os bug. and yes i definitely have been treating my battery badly on discharging and over charging. thanks for the info
They are not that delicate if you know what kills em it's pretty easy to avoid. They don't develop a memory like the older ni-cads. if you are going to store one charge it first. They don't power drain by them selves unless they are in a device. Just don't leave a battery drained. Also they wont over charge in the phone. The phone will stop charging when the battery is full, and 0% is not actually 0volts. There are built in safeguards for the average user.
Hi people. I'm having battery problems since I bought my TP. I tried many ROM and Radios combinations and the problem persists.
Also tried discharging the battery and long charging while turned off (3 consecutive days) as recommended by some members here in xda.
Nothing solved. What could it be? A hardware problem (TP itself) or only a bad battery? Whats more likely?
I would like to know where can I buy an original spare battery to test this. Anyone know?
Thanks in advance!
google.... Here's one, but it's a yahoo page. Take down the oem # and start from there. Also, i think there was a little booklet that should have came with your tp about accessories... http://www.wirelessground.com/htctprooembatt.html
what about using non-official batteries? its risky? because there are batteries for TP for about 5 usd
You know that it will drain battery as long as it is in "sleep-mode" and not entirely powered down. You have to press the powerbutton for 3-4 seconds and then it asks you if you want to power off.

Of course, I mean my TP has a abnormal batt drain with normal use... the batt lasts less than 12h. I unplug it 10am and the battery is finished before 10pm depending on use.
have you by any change changed the TF3D theme?
i made my own theme, but i get the impression that battery drains much faster now. watched the battery fall from 21% to 18% in 3 minutes without doing anything besidesscrolling between TF3D tabs.i think themes might be making more use of the 3d accelerator and drain the battery..
I'm using default theme from ROMeOS v1.20

How about upgrading the Radio Rom!? I have found since going to 1.02.25.28 and having ROMeOS² v1.21 my battery life is much better than stock Roms of both!!
Its something worth trying and easy enough to change back...
Has there been any good solutions? My battery life is starting to annoy me.
Maybe I'll pick up a second battery and charging cradle thing for it...
That's one thing that I liked about the instinct...
I think we need a Stock TP to compare it to .. I know when I bought mine for the first day or two without adding anything to it, I didn't notice an issue with the battery. Now that I've installed tweaking software, theme, etc - battery drain is definitely noticeable. I'm thinking it may have to do with one (or more) of the programs we put on the phone.
Anyone here have a completely stock TP with a battery problem?

tried all radios available in wiki page (except .11 and .16)
but that was with romeos 1.12 and dcs, I'll give a try for .28 with romeos 1.21
but I'm pretty sure that the problem is hardware, since many people use romeos 1.21 and radio .19 and dont have problems...
My phone had a very short battery life when it was bone stock too.
I'm afraid to see what it's like now with the tweaks!!!
mine is original stock TP batterry..but also facing the same problem. in average have to charge twice in a day..and the charging takes a few hours. so my phone is only running on battery for not more that 15 hrs in a day..
I'm hoping now thats its a bad batch of batteries problem and not a phone itself problem
I'm having a simlar issues. Put my TP on off/standby (single press of power button) at around 10pm, on flight mode enabled, all appliactions closed via task manger. Battery was at 80% when I did this. My TP's low battery alert woke me up at 4:30am at 8% charge.
My Blueangel used to last several days in the same state out of it's cradle without needing to be charged!
I to am hoping it's just a duff battery.
UPDATE: Seems I was being a twonk! I had unchecked the Auto-Shutdown option for a game I was playing and forgot to turn it back on, so my TP was turning on at midnight to do it's housekeeping and not shutting down again properly.
I still don't think my battery life is normal though, may try the following:

Received the below from my Sprint rep.
It has been brought to my attention that there is a glitch in Windows Mobile phones that has been there since WM5… Apparently when a phone is first used the firmware looks at the charge on the battery as a reference point as to how long to charge it for until it is completely charged. So for example, if you have a WM phone that has a half charge on the battery when you first plug it in the device will only ever charge up 50% of the battery. You need to basically set the phone to put that marker in place when the phone is completely dead to gain the most battery performance you can.
Here is the best practice for doing this:
----------------------------------------------------------
1. Let the phone completely die on battery power.
2. Plug the phone in and charge for only about 5 minutes (just long enough it can boot up completely)
3. Perform a hard reset of the device, this is done differently depending on the phone model.
4. Then place the phone on charge for at least 8hrs.
---------------------------------------------------------
This should reset that marker that the operating system places on the battery charge cycle and will allow the phone to completely charge the battery rather than only a % of a full charge. This procedure can be done at anytime and I would suggest having your customers try this process first before returning a device based on battery life issues.

Hi, I been looking around but can't find an answer for this so here goes:
I'd like my phone to NEVER shut down on low battery. I'm not talking about the miss calculated battery stats, but the (I assume) built-in shutdown when I am down to 2-3 % left.
When this happens (I tend to forget to charge my Charge), I usually turn it on and call people back which gives me around 10-30 seconds of talk at least 4-5 times before the phone is finally dead (And showing 0%).
What bugs me is that each time I waste battery on the phone starting up again, checking the SD card, firing up display etc etc. I'd rather spend that juice on talking.
So... anyone know of any tricks to tell the phone to just keep ticking till it cant no more...?
Thanks,
I don't know of a way, and even if I did, that's an extraordinarily bad idea. It shuts down in low battery situations for a reason. This isn't a simple feature phone. Android is a full-fledged Linux operating system, and just losing power can cause major data corruption if it happens at the wrong time.
Data doesn't matter

I know this. However, corruption would not be in the firmware, merely in the user storage and I factory reset my phone all the time in the blink of second. Everything I have on the phone is constantly unloaded and easily restored; the phone is in itself just a hub for everything cloud (to use a overused buzzword).
So question is still there
My phone doesn't shut off until it is at critical level, <1% battery. I've even had my phone on before when it was displaying 0% battery, and it didn't turn itself off until it had to. I haven't had my phone shut down on its own until it was essentially dead, both with my Charge and Fascinate.
So...? Recalibrate?
So, it may sound like I need to re-calibrate my battery (again) ?
Is it possible that the phone will need more than one round of charge/drain/charge to show/use the correct battery charge?
It shouldn't if you do it properly. You need to let it cycle from 100% to 0% without restarting, flashing, wiping data, or anything similar. Just charge the phone to 100%, unplug it as soon as you can after it is fully charged, and then allow it to drain until it turns off, and recharge it again fully and you should be good to go.
Also, I thought that I read somewhere that if you ran the battery down to absolute 0, you kill the battery totally

You'll never have to worry about that on a cell phone. When the phone shows 0%, you'll still have a bit over 3V in the battery. Cell phones have a very narrow range that they work over (about 4.2-3V). Outside of that, there's not enough voltage to power the phone, so it will never be able to fully discharge the battery.
It is still a really bad idea to drain the battery all the way down to zero. Buy another battery and carry it with you, if you must. Lithium-Ion does not like to be discharged drastically and charged drastically repeatedly. It likes to cycle at a higher range.
It sounds like you are draining the battery as far as you can as often as possible. This is no good in my experience.
I bought the charging dock that charges a spare battery and comes with a spare (OEM) battery also. When ever I go to leave the house and I realize I forgot to charge my phone, I just swap the battery and I have 100% instantly. If this was a problem for me while I was out, or if I go on a long trip, I'd just carry the spare battery with me one way or another.
I'm no technical expert, but it seems like this article may be somewhat relevant to the conversation.
1. The phone won't turn on
2. The charging indicator doesn't light up when I try to charge the battery.
3. One of the sensors on the top left turns dim red in color when I connect the charging cable
4. I can't hard reset either
thanks
Did the battery die all the way? Or did you flash a radio without checking the md5? If its a borked radio install say hello to a 500 dollar paper weight if its the battery your gonna have to charge it in another phone cause I'm not sure if cwm 5.0.2.7 has powered off charging

Yes we need a couple of info first. Also we need every information we can get in the last events before the phone got bricked. Like what did you do? what ROM? What's the status of the phone? Battery?
The more the details the better we could assist you.
Sounds like when my first Mytouch 3g broke, it would turn on the first couple of times going into a bootlope at the HBoot. It also didnt respond to charging or any other battery i tried.
Thanks for the reply strapped. I haven't flashed a radio. I did flash the virtuous infinity rom though. I'm not certain if that affected the radio. I did, however, let my battery die all the way. Do you know why one the sensors on the top left corner turns dim red when I connect the charging cable?

Oh crap the battery die all the way problem
I think your battery is dead.s
Saw dozens of problems like this on the my previous device's forum.
Li Ion batteries have this fuse inside it in which it trips off when the battery gets discharged to a certain voltage. If it does your battery goes into a suicide mode in order to protect the phone.
basically the best thing to take good care of your battery is not let it drain lower than 40% and not fully charge it to 90%.
discharging it too low drains it's lifespan drastically. While charging it too high also drains it's lifespan.
Over-discharging Lithium-ion
Li-ion should never be discharged too low, and there are several safeguards to prevent this from happening. The equipment cuts off when the battery discharges to about 3.0V/cell, stopping the current flow. If the discharge continues to about 2.70V/cell or lower, the battery’s protection circuit puts the battery into a sleep mode. This renders the pack unserviceable and a recharge with most chargers is not possible. To prevent a battery from falling asleep, apply a partial charge before a long storage period.
Battery manufacturers ship batteries with a 40 percent charge. The low charge state reduces aging-related stress while allowing some self-discharge during storage. To minimize the current flow for the protection circuit before the battery is sold, advanced Li-ion packs feature a sleep mode that disables the protection circuit until activated by a brief charge or discharge. Once engaged, the battery remains operational and the on state can no longer be switched back to the standby mode.
Do not recharge lithium-ion if a cell has stayed at or below 1.5V for more than a week. Copper shunts may have formed inside the cells that can lead to a partial or total electrical short. If recharged, the cells might become unstable, causing excessive heat or showing other anomalies. Li-ion packs that have been under stress are more sensitive to mechanical abuse, such as vibration, dropping and exposure to heat.

Cheers guys. Here's every bit of information I can recollect
A few days ago I created a nandroid backup and formatted my sd card via the PC.
I flashed the latest version of CWM recovery
I flashed the virtuous infinity rom 1.33 alpha v3 and then flashed the 1.35 beta 1 update.
Then i copied some music on to the SD card and installed a couple of apps.... nothing out of the ordinary.
The phone worked fine the last couple of days but I don't remember letting the battery die all the way. I should add that I have a dodgy battery; a couple of months ago my dear girlfriend spilled her drink and beer went in to back of my phone... since then the keyboard doesn't work (some keys work but its basically dead) and the battery has been affected as well since it now only lasts 3-4 hours after a full charge....but this issue can't have caused the problem I'm now having because the dead keyboard and dodgy battery have been around for a few months...
Last night, however, I think I let the battery die all the way and at some point, when I tried to turn it on, the phone vibrated as it does when you hold the power button, however, the screen didn't turn on. Since then, nothing has changed. When I connect the phone to the PC, it makes a couple of "connection" noises but I can't access the SD card or contents.
by saying latest CWM is it the 6.0 touch based CWM by chance?
sorry mate, i meant 5..0.2.7.
That's the CWM I'm using so it's safe. I'm also on latest VI for weeks without problem.
So it all points out to your battery.
Phone vibrating to power button means it's responding perfectly. Not sure about the light on the sensor only htc technician can tell.
But what I can say is if your trackpad button lights out red always then you got a brick on your hand.
Nope the trackpad isn't red so I guess that's a good sign. I've ordered a new battery and should have it later this week. Let's see if that fixes the issue. Will report back. Thanks all!
So, a new battery has arrived, however, it hasn't helped as the phone won't charge (no orange light) or turn on...... Since I live in Australia, I don't know anyone else with this phone. Is there any other way for me to revive my brick of a phone?? Thanks

Get a universal charger for your battery.
Sent from Spaceball One.
This is a rough situation. Even with my DS I've had situations where nothing would happen when I tried to restart it, in particular when I let the system run all the way down. It is as if the battery needs to have some charge for it to charge more. I have three batteries though (the stock & two Anker 1900's) so when this happens I just swap out the battery with one that I charged in the external charger, and I haven't had any real issues with them long-term. Since you bought a battery, what battery was it, and do you think it was charged when you got it, and do you have an external charger to verify that the charge is solid when you put it back in the phone? Your phone may be completely dead however, but at this point, I don't think anybody on the thread really can tell. This make sense? I don't want to say, "buy a set of Anker 1900's with an external charger" but it was cheap enough vs. the cost of the phone, and the DS does seem to be a good one overall.
Hi All,
So I got an external charger for the battery and it arrived yesterday. I then proceeded to charge the battery and hours later, no luck. The phone still doesn't turn on. When I hit the power button, one of the sensors on the top left turns red slightly, shortly after which the phone vibrates. However, it doesn't turn on.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks
have you tried to disassemble your phone at all? you said liquid was spilled in it, could take time for corrosion to turn up. maybe a little electronic parts cleaner or rubbing alcohol may help out
Nope I haven't tried to disassemble it yet but is that the only option remaining? If yes, I might have to give it a go because this phone is now as useful to me as a brick, in its current state.
