Task Manager for Root Users - G1 Android Development

I have created a very simple task manager that will allow you to terminate applications. Basically behind the scene it is just doing "kill -9 PID." It will require root access. It is currently available in the Market.
Source code available here:
http://arronla.com/wordpress/

the name of the aplication to look for it on the market??????????

Task Manager for Root Users

Thanks so much for this, finally a way to kill apps and increase battery life! Sorry about those idiots in market giving poor rating this is one of those apps people have been waiting for. Great work thanks again!

"I cant find root access someone help me out plz"
"Would be nice, I want root access"
Those people are really smart.

I got it but I have a question, each application have a numr listed. but I can't really tell wich application I'm closing, is there any way to know what app. you are closing and not something from the system?

excellent app, been waiting for this for a long time
is there anything that shows up which is not a good idea to terminate?

good app
simple and to the point
the only thing is u should add confirmation before killing an app
i was finger scrolling and accidentally closed something,
still u got my 5 stars.

Thank you for this as well...

I'm thinking its safe to kill the following?
com.tmobile.myfaves 114
com.android.voicedialer 159
com.android.alarmclock 198
com.android.calender 184
android.process.im 175
Any idea whats the following?
com.android.vending 264
com.google.android.gm 238
com.google.process.gapps 135

Nice app...what happened to the source code?

you can kill all of them... they will return as normal. I don't think any of them are completely needed... if it crashes just battery pull and don't kill that one again LOL

The necessary ones will restart. Killing android.process.acore has the same effect as ending explorer.exe.

ok, kill whats showing up in Task manager, but when u hold down the Home button, it still shows them there
any thoughts?

Holding the home button shows u the 6 most recent applications you went to. It does not mean they are running.

very nice app, thanks a lot !

Hey, thanks for this app.
If you're taking sugestions how about some kind of separation/different color for default system process? So it would be easy to know what to close.

Absolutely Genius
thank you very much sir. its about time. wonderful app. one of the best.
UPDATE: Make it alittle prettier cuz someone else will and then take all your credit.
I hate when that happens. Thanks again.

safe to kill the first list? yup.
vending - market
gm - gmail
gapps - google apps? not 100% sure what it controls but I do know it is safe to kill
I agree, something a bit more presentable would appease the masses...as-is, it works as advertised and fills a void that people have been asking about from day one.

Wheres that other thread where people said this couldn't and cant be done.
But yes this is a nice first version i wonder what the other versions will have in store. Maybe an active network monitor and allowing to break connections. We almost need a firewall for this phone like Agnitum Outpost Pro. Where you can block certain apps and ports from constantly sneaking out bytes.

Disable Google Voice

Hi Guys
Is there a way to disable Google Voice in Nexus One in non-Rooted devices? Google results are not useful.
I don't want this application to run in the background. It restarts even if you kill it.

Here you go. Highlights are at the bottom of my post and of the article.
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
*Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when more memory is needed.
*Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when it’s done doing what it needs to do.
*Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when you haven’t returned to it in a long time.
*Most services (while possibly running in the background) use very little memory when not actively doing something.
*A content provider is only doing something when there is a notification for it to give. Otherwise it uses very little memory.
*Killing a process when it isn’t ready only causes it to have to reload itself and start from scratch when it’s needed again.
*Because a task is likely running in the background for a reason, killing it will only cause it to re-spawn as soon as the activity that was using it looks for it again. And it will just have to start over again.
*Killing certain processes can have undesirable side effects. Not receiving text messages, alarms not going off, and force closes just to name a few.
*The only true way to prevent something from running at all on your phone would be to uninstall the .apk.
*Most applications will exit themselves if you get out of it by hitting “back” until it closes rather than hitting the “home” button. But even with hitting home, Android will eventually kill it once it’s been in the background for a while.
Thanks for the reply.
Most of those highlights are not valid for me or for any nexus one users because:
a lot of unused application cause a big amount of RAM which is resulting with a lag/slower N1
Some applications will never be used by some users, for example Amazon MP3, or Google voice (for me)
So, coming to my initial question, is there a way to disable Google Voice?
I guess the simplest way is modacos kitchen. There is a option (?) to remove google voice.
And i agree that removing unneeded apps will improve performance.
any other ideas?
I have just deleted the apk from /system/app
;-)
when i go to /system/app and try to delete amazon MP3 it gives me an error...
i do see that it is -r- (i assume that means read only) is there a way to override that?
Either root and delete the .apk via adb, or you're out of luck.

Exactly. This forum isn't really the place for anyone who doesn't have or want root. Pretty much everything we do here requires root access.

Agreed! Be rooted and do what mod you want to do...
Out of curiosity, with the Nexus, with GoogleVoice running how much free memory do you have? As Cy would say, "free memory is wasted memory." Why kill the app if it's not draining the memory that's needed?
So Carloswithac, that means ("taskiller", "advanced task killer", etc) are practically useless??
If so I'm uninstalling them From My Nexus.

[REQUEST] Dialer app or Contacts app in memory

Hi,
Mods, feel free to move this to the Q&A if you think this is inappropriate. Thanks.
I would like to request whether a similar function like the "Home app in memory" for "Spare Parts" can be extended to critical functions like the Dialer and Contacts app? I find it irritating having the phone to constantly restart the application when coming off the browser or some other applications. It takes a good 2 seconds to load it completely. I have tried clearing the logs etc. but I think having it in memory would really speed up its use.
Can such a thing be done? Or has it been done? Please comment, thank you
solution
This is more of a request than a question...probably would go to the apps forum,
but anyway,
My solution is to download the AutoKiller app, and set it to whatever setting you like...go to settings, and find the running processes, long click on Dialer and select "Keep Alive"
Works for me. Always seems to stay in memory whenever I check running services. If you have any other task managers or app killers, be sure to "ignore" Dialer for those as well, so they don't close it either. Hope that helps. This is a great idea though, I've been introduced it along time ago, with no response, maybe you'll achieve otherwise. Good luck.

Thanks for the alternative solution However, I am hoping that it would automatically boot it into memory when the phone starts, instead of having to run it once before it gets shifted into the memory. Hope I am making sense... but I'll certainly try your solution.

Yeah, I tested your method and it works perfectly, just 1 second or less to switch. But as expected, I need to run it through Autokiller again when I reboot the system. I really hope that it can be autostarted and remained in the memory from the start. But that's a lot... this will have to do while we wait for a kind developer who may take pity on us on this matter
So they're loading slowly on your phone i'm guessing?
another app...
There is another app in the market called autostarts that you can set to start the dialer on startup, a long way of accomplishing what you want, but my work for you.
OP, it seems AutoKiller app will do this for you. Check this post in the How to configure Android's *internal* taskkiller thread.
Thanks for the advices guys. I have tried all of it, and as I am looking at the documentation for 'taskkiller' I seriously am sadden that it is more technical and complicated than "Spare Parts" simple feature of ticking a box
My phone at times loads things slower than usual, especially the dialer app when I have more than 10 call log contacts, etc. I guess it is a HTC Dream problem with its now ancient 528Mhz processor. *shrug*
If a developer can help out on this, it would be great
wait for my HTC cupcake Rom...
dialer is part of the phone and stays in memory.
takes around 1 second to load...

It is not complicated at all.
1) Install AutoKiller
2) Start AutoKiller
3) Allow it root access permanently if it asks, relaunch AutoKiller
4) Click on Processes tab
5) Long press on Dialer
6) Choose "Keep Alive"

I understand the process. When I say it is complicated, I am referring to the need to redo every 5 steps whenever my phone is restarted. I restart my phone daily, and would find that having to relaunch Autokiller, and click this and that is more complicated than just clicking a box 'once' and not needing to worry about that anymore. In fact, this is the problem stated in the thread given under "durability". Thanks again.

I still hope there will be a kind developer who will help with this request. If the solution can be incorporated into a ROM like cyanogen's ROM, even better. Thank you anyone who may be interested.
www.bit.ly/b26PcJ <<this rom has the dialer locked into memory.
Big release will be as soon as I have the time for it.
please report if you like it and if everything works
have fun with it
I agree that this feature is a good idea and should be more standard. Making calls is the primary function of our devices and as such, I should be able to do it instantaneously. On my last non-smart phone, I was able to push talk and get the dialer in like, 1 micro-second. On my G1, I've gotten more used to waiting anywhere from 2 to 5 seconds.
+1
I would love this feature to be implemented in the future.
I too have been looking for a way to set the oom of a few processes to -17 so they'll never close. I've used autokiller, but i too hate that everything has to be set after every boot. I've set the minfree values through custom_init on my hacked up version of StupidFast 1.2, and I'd love to be able to set the oom values there too.
Well I am currently looking in the android source for a way to set it...
playing around with adb shell a little. will report soon
as long as I am doing this, you can still use the rom from above... HTC dialer is just sooo much better when it comes to speed, memory consumption and usability...
best thing would be to get this ported to donut...

ther you could set the oom score....
get the pid with 'pidof [app name]'
you can include the pidof in the whole thing.
so it should be something like
echo -17 > /proc/'pidof [whatever app]'/oom-adj

But I am not shure... still trying
but be aware that there is already waay to little memory avaliable on our phones...
possible for badness (this value) is anything from -17 to +15...
-17 will never be killed, no matter what.

Advanced task killer...showing a diff available memory everytime i kill the same apps

hey guys not sure if any of you are experiencing the same problem with advanced task killer
but as the title describes, every time i open advanced task killer the same apps that i killed previously is on the list again showing that its in use...is that just the way it is or is there a way to shut those apps off for good?
and then on top of that, every time i kill the same apps the amount of available memory shows a diff #.
any input is much appreciated.
I think the closest thing you can use for now would be the auto kill feature lol but that's not an amazing option either! As for memory I've experienced it an all and perhaps someone can explain to us both! I'd really like to know..

Hi - I think that the processes that you're referring to in ATK are kindred of those found in the Windows OS and the like - they are processes that need to be running for the phone to function.
I too noticed the vast difference in the available memory fresh after each kill - I've pegged it down to the old rule of thumb, smart phones need to be rebooted every 48 hours or so - just like a computer, rebooting is the best way to free up RAM (or in this case, sweet sweet x10 memory).
Personally I reserve ATK for when I exit an app that doesn't in fact have an "Exit" option in it's in-app menu; just to be sure that the process has been killed.
Hope that eases the brain strain
ive started to use fastreboot.. reboots the phone without having to switch it off.. does it instantly and helps free up ram!
This does not really resolve the issue does it. I need to restrict programs to start on reboot, thats all I need. I know there are applications are causing the battery drain.
Im left with this stupid device now.. really want to move away now.

Best Android Task Manager - Open Processes

Hello All,
I wanted to see what everyone thinks is the best application manger for Android.
Also is anyone familiar with the Getjar free app store?
Thx All,
Force
What do people think of "Advance Task Killer"
It seems to me it shows all tasks, not jsut the open ones.
Regards,
Force
FYI,
Many people say talk killers are not necessary, as that is a windows phenomenon, Linux & android treating background processes differently.
Regards,
Force
I personally use Advanced Task Manager for $0.99. I have read the articles about how Android does not need task Managers because it is built in, but I know from personal experience that without it if there are running programs in the background my phone gets really sluggish especially when I get a phone call and it makes it difficult to answer etc. Take in account, this experience was mainly with the Hero (slower) but I use on my Evo now.
You know people will argue either way, because there is evidence to support both sides of the argument. so with that in mind- i honestly havent had the need for one with my evo, but it you truly are considering one- i actually have a pair to suggest.
one is OS Monitor- free on the market- great app for pinning down process that could be an issue- also supports dmsg repporting- and logcat is built in to- so if your testing something and it goes all wonky you can export the log to view on a pc and send it to the developer too.
the second is AMM- or Auto Memory Manager- free and donate versions on the market. There are pretty much a couple of sliders and you set it how you want android to handle the process. I have had great success with this app on my other device- normal free memory was around 30-35 and using this set aggressively i saw gains of 50mb at most times keeping my freememory to around 75-80mb range.
Hope this helps.
I take both sides. I have task manager installed, but use if ONLY when needed. Aka, I used it when I want to kill the browser after I'm done with it so next time I launch it I won't be seeing old pages.
I like EStrongs Task Manager.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/nextapp.systempanel.r1 is nice, it can kill processes, monitor system stats, uninstall apps and more. There is also a free version.

why someone who know don't explaine exactly how android works and do we need killers and if yes which one is best...
Everyone of us using something but question is that which one is best for our needs.
quick system info pro (free)
I only use the manual task killer widget when memory gets down around 100. Spikes it right back to about 250.
Whats your guys' normal memory range? I see someone on here saying 50 was normal for them but that seems REALLY low to me.

[Q] stop google maps, and keep it dead

Figured this was a general Android app problem. And in case it matters, I'm running an HTC EVO Shift with stock room and rooted.
My problem, and this has been so since day one but its gotten to the point of bugging me too much, is that google maps will constantly run. i can kill it using taskiller, but it'll just come back after a few minutes. and normally with more than one copy. i do use it a lot which is why i don't just flat out delete it off my phone. however, it'll auto run its self without me doing anything.
for example. i can hit the kill all button (i've hidden the system apps) and it'll kill everything off and be fine and dandy. give it about 5 minutes and during which i don't even touch my phone, and when i refresh taskiller, maps is running again and is the only thing running, and their may be more than one copy of it running (aka more than one icon with the name "maps" under it).
so short of uninstalling it, how does one go about making it stop and stay stopped till i run it again? is there some program that's starting it? how do i find and destroy it? And yes i'm fairly certain its not latitude. i've never even run that program once. personally, i'd like to just uninstall it, but don't see it under titanium backup any where's. is it embedded in google maps or something?
When you buy a phone you should 1st do some research about it's OS, how it handles memory and all that. You don't even deserve an answer you know that?
Why are you so obsessed with killing Google Maps?
If your phone works fine I don't see the problem. Android handles process killing by itself when needed. Task killing in Android is a bad reflex. Android doesn't work like WM.
Hello Viper,
I played around with this for a little while, and here is what I came up with for ideas:
1. You have the 'Let Google use my location' enabled. Settings -> Location and security -> Use Wireless networks
2. You have some app that is tied to Google Maps, maybe not Latitude, but something.
I also have Latitude, but I found that if I leave the 'my location' setting unchecked, Google Maps stays away. Once Maps once, though, it is there until I reboot.
p.s. You deserve an answer. I can't figure out why people who don't even have the answer go out of their way to point out that they don't like your question.
If you really want to kill map uninstall it or use titanium backup to freeze it.

Google Maps can prefetch map data when you're not using the app, so it keeps burning battery power and data in the background.
You can disable prefetching and switch off network location, but then you'd have to switch it back on everytime you need it. In some scenarios killing the maps app makes more sense.
In android you DONT kill apps/process's/services unless there is a problem with the app itself.
There is no point in using a task killer unless you want to waste your battery for some reason. That is why you do not deserve a answer.
Instead of being a jerk, you could have just avoided the thread. And, pretty much, there's no use killing it. If you're rooted, you can use titanium backup to freeze and unfreeze when you want to use it, but apart from that, inorder to avoid problems, just let it be.

Go to Settings > Location. Uncheck GPS and wireless networks. It should be good enough to not run constantly. BTW, task killers are bad. Who ever thought it would be a good idea to have on Android is stupid and who ever installs a task killer is stupid too.
Wow...people need to learn how to stop trolling. You dont think they deserve an answer then dont waste your time replying. The title was self explanitory and could have been skipped by the xda gods if they didnt seem fit for their level.
OP, I would keep an eye on the battery use and if you see it there then worry about killing it somehow. If not then it is not doing you any harm. Your not in windows aymore. Lol
Unchecked network location, switched off map prefetching, disabled auto updating, but when I rebooted Google Maps still started all by itself to download a few megabytes of data.
Task killers are a waste of time for most apps, but Google Maps is an exception. Google Maps is really a misbehaving app that needs to be tought who's boss.
i thought this was supposed to be a help site

Ive noticed in the short time ive been on this forum that theres ALOT of pricks in here, that makes the atmosphere really bad.
Not all are retards just because a question is "stupid"
Actually, there are no such things than stupid questions, if no one asks, no one will ever learn, so please show some respect for the people whos not as superinteligent as you are...
Sorry, had to get it out
I do also notice the battery is draining fast on my Samsung S3, and on top of the consuming list is Google maps, and considerably a lot more than the next one on the list, so i too would love to stop that Google map unless its VERY important for the phone to work normally...
