Make sure to follow the directions to properly name the update file and to dismount the USB before unplugging. Also, have you confirmed your device is indeed rootable? Remember that any device running official RC30 is not rootable.

Step 5 should be performed in Telnet prompt on the G1. You can get the Telnet app on the Market. Optionally, download it from here and install with adb (probably more difficult for you).

Try completely restarting the G1 (hold down power button, turn off, then turn back on). Type the "telnetd" command in quickly after booting up. Within a minute or two should be sufficient. The hidden console (that which receives the telnetd command) does not stay responsive for very long after booting up.
Second, just to confirm: are you positive you are on RC29 or earlier firmware? You can check easily by going into Settings->About Phone and scrolling down to the Build Number.

Same here.
Ok... If your wimax isn't working and you want to downgrade to try to get it working this is how to do it...
1st get all of the files like you want to do Toast's Part-2. link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835
Then do this part:
STEP 2~FLASHING MTD PARTITION TO ENABLE DOWNGRADE:
- download all files posted above
- unzip the flash_image.zip and the mtd-eng.zip
- put the flash_image and mtd-eng.img on the root of your sdcard
- go into shell on ur pc and do:
adb shell
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
- this should only take a second or two
- now put the PC36IMG.zip on the root of your sdcard
- power off the phone
STEP 3~FLASHING ENG BUILD:
- hold volume down + power to boot into hboot
- it should now find and verify the PC36IMG.zip on the root of your sdcard. itll show a blue status bar on the top right of the screen.
- after a minute or so it will ask u if u wanna flash SAY YES
- affter it flashes the PC36IMG.zip it will ask if you wanna reboot. SAY YES
After if finally boots you should see HTC quietly brilliant which hangs forever but it should eventually get past it. Once it does you will have the oldest everything. This is a beta build and has a bunch of tools but just do an upgrade to root like you normally would. I would suggest going to .6 then upgrading to the latest 47 from there.
Hope that this helps someone.
P.S. is anyone willing to dump all of the tools that are included in this rom. It might be helpful for the other devs.

It's just easier to copy and paste stuff, even typing on a real keyboard. It's a pain in the ass doing it via terminal emulator with the lack of a physical keyboard on our Evo's.
Can anyone confirm if this helps fix the 4g issue?

If you used the unrevoked, no it wont.
There is no fix for 4g from unrevoked yet.

I used the toast method. And if i'm not mistaken I should flash roms w/o the 1.47.651.1 OTA update after downgrading right?
Nope, I try this method and it is not working. Some how the new OTA encrypted a code that any lower version will not over write it.
You don't have root access to even copy/paste or push the files to /data. I tried this and got a permission denied error message.
How do you input adb shell into Vista, I clicked "start", "run" and type "cmd" it bring up C:\users\XXXXX\ cd c:\android hit "enter"
then I type
c:\android>adb remount
Access is denied
Please advise what I did wrong. thanks
It worked for me... you have to make sure that when you enter the su command in adb to look at your phone. There should be a super user permission box that pops up. Accept it and youll be able to adb. It went fine for me after that.

2) On your Phone make sure the Ninja(SuperUserPermission) is set to prompt you when you have a request.
3) go to your PC and type in adb shell
4) type in SU
5) Once do you that you will see a prompt from the Ninja asking for a request. Allow for it. And it will remember from that point forward.
6) Look at your cmd prompt screen for a # - if you have it you have full access.
Then so what commands you have been given to do.
It can also be done from the Android Terminal Emulator but some might not like working with a smaller screen I like it myself. Makes me feel geeky

This would only work if after the messup your still has root access. Some people have root and the "SU" will work but for the people w/o root will get access denied.

From above (I hate quoting) have you tried going to your tools folder inside your android folder and from there try your adb commands?
If you applied the OTA sent from Sprint, you lost root access. There will be no Ninja in the programs folder, because it was a new rom that the was flashed with the OTA. Root access has been closed for those that downloaded the update. If you try and type su, you will get permission denied.
Those of you that still have the root and superuser rights, DON'T DOWNLOAD THE OTA!! You are in a better position then the rest of us. I wanted the good battery life, so that's why I did it.
Hey guy's, I've beentrying to install clockworkmod on my Epic for some time now to no avail. See, I just rooted my phone using the noobnl's "one click method v2.2.6". The only recovery I have on my phone as of right now is tthe stock recovery. I've read just about every post about the installation on clockworkmod recovery and tried accordingly. Still no custom ecovery. Im really noob to all this "wiz stuff", and would greatly appreciate any help you guy's could give me. Perhaps some DETAILED step by step instructions ( CUZ IM REAL BRAIN DEAD AT TIMES )?? I have DI11 installed on my phone as of now, and im running the stock kernel v2.6.29. again, Im rooted with "noobnl's one click" and I do have root. Also, I need to know if you download to my pc, then push it to my phone using command prompt? Do I flash it with Odin? And what do I do after I run the clockworkmod exploit? Will I have custom recovery after that, is there anymore steps involved? Thank you all for making this site the best web site I"ve been on so far. You guy's are the best. Excuse the stupid question please, do I have the sdcard mounted, or unmounted? I heard it can be done either way...
The only thing you use Odin for is to flash a complete .tar file. Ie, returning to stock, or updating to a new release DG27, DI07, or DI18

Make sure it is NOT mounted as a mass storage device. Make sure you can access it from the phone. So, don't mount it.

Technically, custom ROMs can be made for Odin, too... But since it's not a very good method, everyone prefers the recovery method. noobnl released his first rooted kernel for Odin. Odin does a lot more than just complete .tars.

I ran the commands as you stated, then ran the exploit. It keeps saying,
"remove stock recovery patcher"
"device not found"
system (something) install recovery.sh permission denied
"system/recovery-from-boot.p permission denied
failed to copy 'zImage' to /sdcard/zImage: permission denied
reboot: operation not permitted
im failed for /sdcard/zImage, permission denied
So what do you think is going on? Any thoughts?
I had same exact issue. Went back to completely stock then rooted then did clockwork. Do not mount sd card. Follow instructions exactly.

Is your phone in debug mode? (Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging) Did it actually let your run those commands I told you?
Yes, my phone is in fact in debugg mode. My desktop command prompt does let me run the commands.

After I type the command "su" it gives me the #. Then on my phone a superuser request comes thru and askes to chose "yes" or "no". So I hit "yes". But when I run the exploit in the beginning it says "mount", and it says that the operation is not permitted... then it starts saying "I'm failed for" and "operation not permitted" and so on.. I think I'm missing a step somewhere but I don't kno...

I spent the weekend trying to get my Epic rooted and cwm installed. I was finally successful with both. CWM I had to install by typing in each command that was in the bat through the cmd window with adb.

So exactly what are the steps you took to install clockworkmod manually through windows command prompt? Do I just look in the bat exploit?
I take no credit whatsoever for obtaining root or anything development related.
I simply took BCNice20's instructions and added more detail for less experienced users. In fact I copied most of this directly from his thread and added more detail.
I take absolutely no responsibility for your phone if you brick it, if it melts, if it sleeps with your wife, or if it burns your house down.
Proceed at your own risk.
If you need to get started with the SDK and ADB start here
Step 1
Temp root your device using Visionary or Z4 (I prefer Visionary)
If you are already temp rooted skip this step
Step 2
Download the file linked at this address http://www.thebcblends.com/shift/Shift-root.zip
Extract the contents to the root of your SD card.
If you are having trouble extracting download 7-Zip
Once installed connect your phone to your computer as a disk drive
right click on the shift-root.zip, select extract here, then use the dropdown to locate your device, more specifically your SD card
Once you have extracted the file to the root of your sd card change your connection type back to charge only
Step 3
If you have followed my other thread you already have adb working
Open the cmd prompt and paste the following

Superuser will prompt you to click allow on your phone. Click it quickly to allow permissions!
Now you will see

Step 4
Verifying md5sum
Make sure you copy and paste this exactly

md5sum /sdcard/Shift/hboot_orig.bin
then hit enter
Your result should look like this 386c19451e8dd18f9b98fad6b11be4c0 hboot_orig.bin make sure the numbers match. You may have some extra path in front of hboot_orig.bin.
Next copy and paste this exactly

md5sum /sdcard/Shift/hboot_eng.nb0
then hit enter
Your result should look like this 60ec1006e6ec2e8acb370d6aad35b17e hboot_eng.nb0 make sure the numbers match. You may have some extra path in front of hboot_eng.nbo.
If these do not match do not proceed. Delete the file placed on the root of your sd card and repeat step 2 and redownload.
Step 5
Now we're going to flash the eng spl. This is where the unpleasant things can happen.
Make sure you are in adb shell with superuser(root) permission. This was explained in Step 3.
If you are not in adb shell with root permissions then do not proceed. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Now DO NOT REBOOT until you are instructed to do so!!
Now paste this exactly into cmd prompt

dd if=/sdcard/Shift/hboot_eng.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
and hit enter
You have flashed the eng spl. Now we will make sure it flashed properly.
Step 6
Check the md5 of new flash hboot and restore if necessary
run this command to pull the newly flashed hboot to your sdcard

now we check the md5 to see if it matches

if the md5sum matches then congratulations its safe to reboot!! you can skip the next bit and continue on to step 7
if you absolutely cannot get the eng hboot to flash right then run this to restore the stock hboot

Step 7
check hboot and perm root!!
ok now reboot your phone into bootloader
turn off phone and hold power+vol down till it boots into bootloader
look at the top and make sure it says s off
if so reboot the phone back into android
put the phone into airplane mode
Go to setting, applications, manage applications and uninstall superuser
Next temp root with visionary
after you are temp rooted then attempt to perm root with visionary
your phone will reboot and you are now officially perm rooted any changes you make will now stick on reboot
**Edit Recovery Added**
Download ROM Manager from the Market. (Pay for the donate version!)
Open ROM Manger and install recovery.

Type cd\ to get to the c:
The command prompt just started out in your user directory. You can just do the cd\Android......... stuff. Using cd\ it doesn't matter which directory you're in when you start.

First follow BCNice's instructions for backing up your Wimax Keys. You need to be in adb shell, then paste and enter. That easy!
After that place this file on the root of your sd card.
Disconnect from the computer then power down your shift.
Enter the bootloader by pressing power and volume down. The bootloader should recognize the zip and flash it automatically. Select yes to reboot when prompted.
Connect to your computer and remove the zip from your sd card.
If you want to verify your recovery is now working power down and turn back on by pressing power and holding the volume down button. You should now be looking at Clockwork Recovery.

Delete the file off of your SD card and follow the instructions included in the Wiki Just download the fastboot file linked in the wiki and put it in the same folder you put adb in.

I am now rooted . Thank you BrandoKC. I know you copied the instructions from bcnice20 ( Thank you bcnice20), but you dumbed it down enough for me to get brave. I'm a total noob to Android. It was a bit nerve racking, but I got it on the first shot. Thanks to everyone. Now it's time to OC my Shift .

for some reason.. whenever I do temp root with visionary or z4... It says its rooting.. then my phone "restarts" does the sprint 4g slaph screen and gets stuck on the big 4G logo...
I ran visionary when I first got the shift(temp root to run titanium backup) but now it's not working. anyone know why?

Hey there folks!
I found something out recently that is pretty useful.
Many of you surely use the Terminal Emulator.
Most actions require root privilegies and you always have to type in 'su' to aquire them.
It is possible to run it as root automatically.
Just follow this easy steps:
1. In the app, press the menu button and click on preferences.
2. Scroll down to the command line option and click on it.
3. Now remove the old line and enter this:

/system/xbin/su
If you prefer bash over the standard sh, add this line:

-s /system/xbin/bash
That's it, you now have a rooted terminal without any interaction.

By the way, this depends not on the device. The su binary just has to exist in the described location, that's all.
