Hi everybody
Ive been around thousand of threads on xda-dev and couldn't find any official one for Anti-Virus. That's the main reason why I'm starting this new thread and also because Anti-Virus on Pocket PC are growing more and more. Actually we are not safe but we don't care until we get infected and that will be too late, with most of the time the only solution a hard reset.
Let's discuss and compare in this thread the different Anti-Virus SW available on the market today, and bring out positive/negative points based on our experience. It will be benifit for everybody ...
I know everyone hates Norton/Symantec but I was on the beta testing team for Norton Smartphone Security Premier Edition since day one and it is very friendly and easy to use.
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/beta/overview.jsp?pvid=nssp1beta
Actually I was using Symanter antivirus for handheld on my QTEK 2020i WM2003SE and that's true it is user friendly and worked fine, with virus definitions updates very ofently.
I was unable to install it on my HTC Athena WM6
Do you know is there is any version coming for WM6 Pumpiron?
I checked you link and it's different from what I used to have on my old device.
Ill download this beta and try it.
I'll let you know what I think about it, if it slow down the machine etc ...
It did not on mine and when I uninstalled it, it was gone...no traces..part of the beta testing. I did uninstall from my desktop, not my PPC
I am curios, how does this effect your device speed and performance?
What is the CPU and memory usage (in reality, not what stated on the site)?
I have Symantec on my XP PC and it sucks big time (does the job for the most part, but very slow and heavy).
eTrust came pre-installed on my Jamin, but that is an even bigger atrocity!
Another question - do they have a list for PPC viruses on their site like they do for PC ones?
The only PPC virus I heard of was a harmless proof of concept that could make files display a pop-up message and did not reproduce.
If real viruses for WM systems are already out there (I know its a only matter of time) I would be interested in reading up on them to know what I am facing.
Also, anyone actually caught a virus on a WM machine and can share the experience?
Here are my first impressions:
1 - The Startup time of my Athen after a soft reset has increased by around 20 sec, this because Symantec is loading on the startup.
2 - I didn't noticed a slow down during normal utilization of the device, but it's really early before concluding on that point because I need to try different applications.
3 - When I first connected to the Internet via WiFi, even the connection were established, could not load the pages having an error "page not found"
but after 15sec everything is back to normal and connections to Internet was not a problem at all.
4 - I just suffered a Freeze but not sure it is due to Symantec, because i've been suffering frequent daily freezes on my Athena since I upgraded to WM6.
But the freeze came this time while using the Antivirus SW
5 - The package is composed by an AntiVirus, a Firewall, a Norton Secure Folders utility and a Norton Tools utility.
6 - Also note that after finish installing it, it force you to set a pin code that you will have to enter everytime you soft reset your device. I tried to disable it but it won't let you do it
I'll give more details about the package in a different post after some testing

You can check the list from the SW installed on the PPC
Just applied live update over WiFi and basically there are 5 in the list:
EICAR-TEST-FILE
WinCE.Duts.A
Backdoor.Brador.A
Trojan.Redbrowser.A!jar
MSIL.Cxover.A
Definitions : 04/06/07 ver 2.0
As promised, here is my feedback on the tools provided in the package:
1 - Norton Antivirus
Very friendly and easy to use, from the menu u can access the options for the Antivirus, the Scans, the AntiSpam, Updates and Proxy config. You can also access the quanrantined files, the activity log and the virus definitions list. Manual scan and automatic scan can be performed.
2 - Norton Firewall
I didn't really understood how we use the Firewall function. Basically when you start it you have a tab showing the security level. It is have different security levels for World (the highest), Office, Home and Open Sapce Networks (the lowest). Also you can not modify them at all. You can access a second tab called Events by severity in last and a third tab "Event list" which show in details all the events that happened on your device, like soft reset, login success .... very weird as we can not reset this list, also we can not change any parameter in the Norton Firewall, everything is set by default
3 - Norton Secure Folders
from what I guessed, this utility allow you to choose folders on your device and set them as secure. I don't know what it does exactly but I think it should encrypt the data inside the folder so it's protected in case you have been attacked by a trojan who collects your data and send it to the pirate.
You click on menu->Add->then you choose from the list Device, Mircrodrive or Storage Card if you have one. Then you type the name of the folder you want to secure.
I did a test, I choosed Device, and kept the folder name blank and clicked on ok. It added the "secure folder" under device. if you try to remove it you will have this warning "Removing the secure folder will destroy all data in the folder. do you really want to remove it?"
4 - Norton Tools
It contains 2 utilities, GetUUID and Lock
GetUUID will display on the screen 2 series of digites
the first one don't know what it is and second one is your IMEI
I guess this info is needed when the final version is released and
you need to register the SW
Lock utility display the following message when u click on it
Encryption may take several minutes. Pls wait for the device to power off.
If you need to soft reset, pls wait until encryption is completed and the
device powers itself off.
I clicked on yes, so the device start encrypting something .... then the screen turned off. I turned it on using the power button and it displayed to me the password screen which I entered. then it displayed the message decrypting for about 30 sec, then I had my normal today screen ...
Im wondering if it does not encrypt/decrypt the secure folders you
already chosen using the "Norton Secure Folders" utility.
Ive wrote to Symantec asking them for a manual or user guide, hopefully they will reply.
I have rated this SW 3/5 on their site, mainly because it is not clear what all utilities does and because Firewall is set by default and noting can be changed.
Hope my feedback will be usefull, and I hope other users will bring to us their experiences with the different Anti-Virus SW they have used on their Pocket PCs.
Just as I suspected, no real viruses just a nice proof of concept that asks you if you want to try it:
WinCE.Duts.A
A back door that needs to be run and does not spread:
Backdoor.Brador.A plus it would be useless if you are on GPRS/EDGE/UMTS or behind a NUT router.
This one seems like it could actually be trouble, if:
a) you leave in Russia
b) you are stupid enough to believe you can get WAP pages through SMS and that it would be cheaper than GPRS
c) you can get it to work on PPC.
Trojan.Redbrowser.A!jar
This one though, I have to admit is rather clever - using .NET to run both on PC and PPC amd is fairly destructive:
MSIL.Cxover.A
It is still unclear, however how its spreads from PC to PC (presumably you have to download and install / run it).
Of course given the fact that many people save their docs on SD and not the default My documents folder and that they do not disable security completely on their WM 5 and up devices (which are becoming majority these days) the effectiveness of this worm is more than questionable.
Well I still think it is too early to actually by this kind of apps. Also I think that as with many other programs the same "heavy" approach that works on PCs with many resources will not work well on PPC (not the way they are today). A different solution to virus protection needs to be found to be useful.
But hey - thats just my opinion...
So from what ive read its still to early to be using a resource draining av on the ppc? If this is the case, how about Spybot S&D? Is spyware more of a threat than viruses? are they really that much different? I find that spybot updates more regularly(when i connnect wifi).
as with virus's i believe that have to be made to support ppc's
in which case maybe due to spyware makers lack of innovation
that market have yet to take off
WingChan: whether to use the software or not is a personal decision - my belief is: given the list of threats it is too early. Also I believe that the method used to protect against viruses on PC is not suitable for PPC because of the resource requirement. Something more efficient needs to be invented, perhaps taking advantage of difference in architecture between WM and desktop - like the fact that system files can not be corrupted but only hidden.
Note that BigDede preformed the test on HTC Advantage which has a 600+ MHz processor if I am not mistaken. I doubt the app would be as unnoticeable on my 200MHz Prophet.
But it is only a matter of time before someone writes a real and damaging virus for this platform as it becomes more and more common. So if you really value the info you have on there you might want to get protection already - although a good and frequent backup would be much better.
I haven't heard of spyware for Windows Mobile, only major one for BB - any one got any news on this?
There is a major difference between spyware and viruses:
Viruses try to cause as much damage as possible and their effects always become visible sooner or later, in many cases almost immediately after infection.
Spyware on the other hand, needs to hide and tries not to interfere in device operation as much as possible and show no sign of activity.

Very good explanation of the differences between Viruses and Spywares.
I agree also that it is too early today to really worry about having protection, but I prefer to be ready instead of regretting and wishing I had some protection.
Very good remark as well regarding the frequent backup ...
Need Help
Hello Everyone,
I'm not a developer, but I found your thread on this subject via Google and was hoping I could ask a question...
I'm able to download the Norton Smartphone Security Premier Edition Beta version, but when I try to install it (which I assume must be done first to my laptop, followed by sync'ing my laptop with my 8525) a "Self-Extracting Archive" window comes up that says: "Warning, one or more files skipped". This occurs when the installation process reaches "Extracting: SUPPORT\START.ICO 100%".
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Many thanks for your time!

Hi
Maybe this warning is not a big deal, have you tried to install it by double clicking on the start.exe file ???
G.S./BigDede,
Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it.
If I understand your recommendation, I don't think that gets me where I need to be. However, it could always be user error on my part.
When I try to "Setup" the file I downloaded (called "NSSPB.exe") from Symantec, a window comes up that contains a button that says "Install". However, after I click on it, it gets to a point in the installation process that shows "Extracting: SUPPORT\START.ICO 100%", and the process simply stops and a small window comes up that says: "Warning, one or more files skipped".
In essence, it appears I have recieved the entire 4.04 MB of program files I downloaded, but something goes askew when I try to extract/install them.
I'm stumped...
Thanks again, A.J.
I'll extract the files and will zip them for you.
Send me via PM your email adress so I can send you the zip file
Cheers
I came across, on another forum, a today plugin pic.
The poster in fact, was posting the cabs for activating VoIP on Wm6 roms.
Cabs mostly from Xda.
But what impressed me the most, was a capture of his today screen.
He has the regular 'wireless' plugin showing the status and name of the three typical connexions: GSM, Bluetooth and Wifi.
But his plugin was showing also the status of his DATA connexion.
(I guess GPRS, EDGE, HSPDA etc.)
Any one knows where I could find the cab or the registry tweak to add this feature to the basic wireless plugin?
OK I finally got more informations, it's part of a today plugin and commanager from O2 XDA Zinc.
Any one who have access to this phone could help providing the following?
- Which registry values are present on that phone in this area:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\"Wireless"]
- has any one got the installation cab of that plugin?
It would be great to see the _setup.xml file, maybe the tweak is there
- any one can send me the "netui.dll" in the windows directory of that phone, so I can try to run it see if that helps showing the 'data connexion status'?
Cheers
Well, 64 viewers and still no one knows about it?
1) has any one seen this wireless today plugin before?
2) has any one used it before?
3) does any one know about a registry tweak, a cab or a dll that displays this additional data connexion status?
I have it on my TyTN...sorta.
It looks just like yours with the WiFi and Blutooth, but not the Data part of it.
The registry tweak is documented in the Wiki. That's where I found it
You did not get my point
Thanks for the reply, I thought every one got scared away by the question...
Yes, I already know the registry tweaks and I also got the cab for what I called the regular/typical wireless plugin (operator name, wifi status, bluetooth status).
My point is: how about the DATA status (gprs, edge, 3G)?
Does any one know how to add this fourth information into the wireless plugin?
I updated the first post and the title with new informations
Its all about the O2 XDA Zinc phone
Could some one be kind enough to provide the following informations:
- Which registry values are present on that phone in this area:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\ "Wireless"]
- has any one got the installation cab of that plugin?
It would be great to see the _setup.xml file, maybe the tweak is there
- any one can send me the "netui.dll" in the windows directory of that phone, so I can try to run it see if that helps showing the 'data connexion status'?
Cheers
This is actually a very intersting find. Data indicator is what always turned me away from that plugin. It'd be very interesting to find out more, unfortunatley a lot of Googeling got me nowhere and without the device in possession I feel like I have not much more to offer.
Anyone else?
//Nik
Yeah, I made some more findings, thanks to the guy the screen-shot came from...
The registry keys seem to be quite similiar EXCEPT the fact that this wireless plugin doesn't use netui.dll, it uses a dll called: WirelessManagerToday.dll
I put that dll onto my system and tried to get i working but it didn't.
It did not give me any error, but it just displayed nothing...
So what we need now, it's an installation cab of the O2 Xda Zinc Wireless Manager or something like that, to see if there is another file involved in this process (an .exe file or whatever)
And to know if there are other settings apart that registry link to that particular dll.
Any one using O2 phone can answer?
hi there fancy meeting u here
the thing is o2 zinc comm manager is different from HTC one ... as the attachment below. Also a shot of the dll ... the string value of the dll show a Wireless Manager. Zip file contains the WManager.exe & also the dll
Hope this help
Hi mate.
The world is not that wide, when we use the same nick everywhere!
;-)
I tried to send you a mail with some useful stuffs to unlock your extendedrom, but every mail failed, maybe a problem of anti-spam filter.
I post here below the applications from this site and others. Give it a try...
cheers mate
well i ll try this one ... sad to hear that u cant use the plugin yet ... keep trying mate
BTW o2 zinc is made by Asus ... not sure if a htc unlocker can unlock the ext rom ...
Hope you can unlock your extended ROM and find some useful cab related to the Wireless Manager install.
I don't like to give up, but the fact is I don't know toward which direction make the next move...
When you have time, would you make some automatic search in your registry to make sure there is no other references to those dll and exe or maybe some other components of the whole wireless system. Thanks.
Yeah, I know the manufacturer is different, but It's still the same Windows Mobile system, there might be some bridges between them.
Cheers
i only have the update rom frm o2 only now ... i cant extract the exe file ... it only show error ... maybe you can teach me how to do a rom dump maybe than it can be some help to you
i have tried compiling a cab file with both dll & the registry using wince cab manager ... hope it can work

Hi guys,
I wrote a guide for installing Mobile GMaps on another forum.
I'll paste it here also and I hope it will be of some help for somebody.
Problem:
I have tried Google Maps for Mobile. Gorgeous. Unfortunately requires a connection and there is no possibility so far of saving maps :-(
Solution:
Mobile GMaps. http://www.mgmaps.com
It's a java application that load maps from different providers (yahoo, Windows live, google, ask.com and some others). It has a GUI really similar to Google Maps and it runs smoothly on my tornado (sp5) even if it is a java application. It has some features that Google does not have but it does not have the positioning system without GPS based on radio cell tracking (whereas Google has it).
Here it's the guide. As always I'm not responsible for any loss of data, for any fees you might pay for air data connection and for any alien invasion.
I do suggest to take a look to the step by step guide.
Quick start
Install Application
1. Install a java virtual machine (j2me) on your smartphone. I used JBed: http://www.winmobiletech.com/092007MidletBible/Jbed.rar
2. Download the application: http://wap.mgmaps.com/mgmaps-signed.jad and http://wap.mgmaps.com/mgmaps.jad and copy them in the root of the smartphone
3. Install the application (signed) using JBed
Download the maps
4. Setup the area of the map you want to download using http://www.mgmaps.com/create/
5. Install gMapMaker on your PC: http://www.mgmaps.com/cache/gMapMaker-setup.exe
6. Download the maps on your PC using gMapMaker and the map file you created in step 4
7. Copy the maps on your smartphone.
8. Setup Mobile GMaps in order to pick up the stored Map ("Settings" -> "Map Browsing", enable "Stored Maps", enter the path to your maps in "Storage Path", enable "Offline mode")
Step by Step
1. You need a java virtual machine. I followed this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=339577
You can choose among different j2me http://www.winmobiletech.com/092007MidletB...ityAndMain.html
I ended up on choosing Esmertec Jbed. I had no problem in installing on my smartphone (wm6) on the storage card.
Here it's the link: http://www.winmobiletech.com/092007MidletBible/Jbed.rar
On the Mobile GMaps website they suggest the one from IBM but you need to register. If you wanna go with IBM's follow this guide: http://www.mgmaps.com/winset/
2. Now you need the actual application. The generic version can be found here: http://wap.mgmaps.com/get.php?version=13&a...submit=Download
Basically you need the jad file (_signed_) and the jar file. Copy both of them with Active sync in the root of your smartphone.
3. Launch Esmertec Jbed. Select "Menu" -> "Install" -> "Local Files". Then select "mgmaps-signed". Follow the installation instruction basically agreeing on everything ;-).
It will ask to launch the Midlet and it will ask for many authorizations for accessing internet. This is the first time the application is running and it is retrieving all the information on the web. Thus, I strongly suggest to have the smartphone connected with activesync on a computer with internet connection. This will avoid the use of GPRS connection.
The application now should correctly running but it does not have any map saved locally yet. Note that the jar and jad files that you have copied on your smartphone can now be removed.
4. To download the map you are interested in go to this website:
http://www.mgmaps.com/create/
Choose the area that you need to pick up (just click on the map to form a polygon). Try not to exaggerate since the more you pick the more you'll have to save on your smartphone. I chose the downtown area of a fairly big canadian city and it took me 13MB for only the map without the satellite images (not bad at the end).
In this website you can choose how many zoom levels you want (given 0 the view of the world and 17 the closest zoom). Level of detail is nothing related to the detail of the map but rather how is gonna be tiled the area you have chosen.
Click "Generate!" and this will create a file containing the coordinates of the area you have chosen.
5. Install "gMapMaker" on your PC in order to download the maps. You can find it here: http://www.mgmaps.com/cache/gMapMaker-setup.exe
For more informations about the installation refer to this: http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?t=1116
6. Launch gMapMaker. Choose the download folder (where your maps will be saved).
Operating mode has to be set to "MGMaps mode, use a .map file".
Pay attention that if you are downloading also satellite images your ip might be temporarily banned by google. In this case use the proxy (see guide linked at step 5).
Click on "Go!" and load the file you have generated in step 4.
The maps now are going to be downloaded.
7. Copy the maps with Active Sync in a folder on your smartphone.
8. Launch again Mobile GMaps. Click on "Menu" (left soft key). Select "Settings" -> "Map Browsing". Enable "Stored Maps".
Choose a folder from "Storage Path". The application will ask again for authorization for reading local files. You should give the authorization and tell him not to ask anymore. Note that if you have not installed from the signed application there is not possibility to tell him to shut up ;-)
You might want also to enable "Offline mode": "the phone will use the internet connection only for searches or GPS tracking, and never for retrieving any map tiles" (read second post here: http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?p=3162 ).
You will be asked to restart the application. Done!!!!
Hope you will enjoy it!!!!
[Damn!!! I hoped the guide would have been shorter!!!]
Thanks for the guide! I have also been playing around with MGMAPS for a while and got it to work with IBM's J9 decently. Unfortunately it doesn't give highres output for some reason, but GPS is working with that midlet manager. Did you somehow manage to connect a GPS unit with JBED? Mine keeps telling me that no GPS is abailable.
I'm sorry but I don't have a GPS
If with highres output you mean QVGA then JBed does the job. It does have only a small problem (as pointed out here: http://www.winmobiletech.com/092007MidletBible/CompatibilityAndMain.html) _before_ launching the application:
http://www.winmobiletech.com/092007MidletBible/GmailVoxInvisibleBottom.png
how do i uninstall gMapMaker from my PC? there isnt an uninstall option and it isnt located in add/remove programs under control panel.
@NguyenHuu: You don't need to uninstall it - it never registers anything outside of the folder where you put it and you can just delete all the files to completely get rid of it.
@soalle: I meant 640x480 resolution which JBED does fine, but with IBM's J9 something seems to go wrong as the maps are indeed QVGA. The difference is quite visible and so I hope that I can get it to run in the higher resolution with GPS. QVGA + GPS is second choice as with being able to track your location the program becomes a true lifesaver (I'm in Japan right now and mobile data is expensive as hell for WM devices). ANd thank you for the great overview - I didn't know that page yet. Seems as if there's not much hope for now... Nokia sure shows how midlets should be run with the N95 - shame on MS for not including a decent midlet manager.
Thanks. That is what I figured and deleted it before you responded, haha. Just to be safe I kept a copy of the install incase I needed to reinstall before I can uninstall again if that caused any problems.
The program itself has great potential, but it requires a good amount of work to map out everything precisely. Even though, I will keep this as a backup for future use. Thanks for the tutorial.
I usually stick with roughly sketched city maps (zoom level 17) as everything larger above zoom level 16 gets too big anyway. No need to see FAT32 choke with 200.000 files It would be great if they could find a way to store multiple tiles in larger container files, but it seems to be impossible as the developer stated in a forum post on his page.

Does JBed work for GPS + highres? Have you tried it?
does it work on ppc phones? i have xda orbit [ htc p3300 ] with inbuilt gps receiver and it always throws no gps error.
does anyone know how to overcome this issue?
i am having my device running on WM6.
thanks
I don't have a ppc with GPS so I cannot really help you sorry... try to look for the answer on the forum of mobilegmaps...
so with this do you need GPS ?
or have i been reading it all wrong ?
sorry for the late reply... i have been in vacations for a while ;-)
So no need of GPS, but clearly it won't give you your position ;-) Obviously you can still use it for browsing maps.
didnt work for me
it doesnt even detects my gps (
MGMAps and Internal GPS
Hi,
My internal gps does not work with MGMAPS. Is there any workaround to the same. I have a HTC P3300 with Windows mobile 6 and internal GPS. It works on COM4 port Kindly help
Regards,
Kailash
Do we have to copy cache folder in a memory card. My cache folder is now 980 mb size on disk and it contains 242946 files and 701 folders
This worked for me.. I tried it several months ago. However, it seems the maps get saves in SOOO many small files that the file nodes take up much more space than the actual data. Storing the whole US at any reasonable zoom level is impossible on my 6Gb card, and would take forever to download anyway.
gmap
this is seriously very very good. Just love it.
I have just done some testing with googlemaps and yahoo.
This application is very good indeed, it works very well, it is also rather fast.
You can also spare a lot of money on traffic with it.
Thank you very much
I have downloaded the Maps perfectly fine and have everything sorted out but I just cant get the actual application installed.
I have downloaded both of the Jar and Jad files, and I am attempting to run the Signed-Jar file however when I get so far through the installation on my XDA Orbit it comes to the error message: "File Error ???".
Is there any way of getting by this?
Any help is appreciated
A solution for the internal GPS issue (For example P3300) which couldn't be used with mgmaps has been made. Found it out yesterday. You can find it on the mgmaps forum at http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?t=1829&highlight=p3300 .tried it out on my P3300 and works as a charm!
I have noticed that over certain period the performance of my Kaiser degrades. Considering that it works great even after I install additional software and configure it to sync with exchange 2007, over time it start to act flaky. Could somebody tell me what causes this and how to resolve it?
My guess is it has to do with temporary and cache file used by different applications and os. If so, what should I be getting rid of?
Thanks in advance

u need to use some "cleaning tools" like sktools or memmaid. There are options to clear some files(temp. internet, ...) and to free up your ram. Thats the main problem, your ram memory is decreasing over time and the phone is acting slover. To make it quicker is to make softreset after some time or use this tools and free up your ram.
You also can use some tools (apps) which will automatically and periodically do the soft-reset for you,
e.g. during the night your device is unused etc...
You can use tools, I like Sk Tools as it is the most comprehensive tool period. But there are many things you can do manually as well.
Delete the files in: \Application Data\Volatile, also in: \Windows\Profiles\Guest\Cookies; History; & Temporary Internet Files; as well as files in \temp.

I have to agree with GSLEON3. SKtools was by far the best piece of software I have purchased for my kaiser. It allows easy cleaning, sip changes, today changes, registry editor, and nearly any tool or tweak you can think of.
I suggest you check out their trial and see what you think.
Hello,
I am a new AT&T Fuze owner and new in general to Windows Mobile "Professional". (Had a Symbian 60 Device Previously) I have been doing extensive reading and researching to figure out how to accomplish my goals but I keep running into dead ends. I have been searching forums and Google but I find that most information is formatted for people that have been in the community for a long time and understand all of the jargon. There seems to be so many flavors of windows and platforms that it makes my head spin and I also find that words like Smartphone, Pocket PC, Window CE, etc.. are thrown around very loosely.
Sorry for the preamble. Here is what I know so far.
Device = AT&T Fuze
CE OS 5.2.19971 (Build 19971.1.2.6)

First I was wondering if there was a positive way of knowing if a certain piece of software will work with my device and what that spec would be. Like does it go by windows version, phone version, both? Or at least some general rules of thumb what to take note of before trying a piece of software. (If it was designed for or works on other flavors of Raphael is it safe to try?)
My biggest problem at the moment is I can't seem to install anything anymore. I am getting a message about unsigned cabs or files missing. I'm hoping this wasn't something I did but it's a possibility. Some software "PPCPimBackup.exe" will still install but most won't like "Advanced_Configuration_Tool_v3.3.cab". I even tried to make a simple .cab using CeRegEditor to adjust the city string for the weather tab in TF3D. Any help here would be most appreciated. I am very weary of all these so called "unlockers" out there and even read a thread here where someone bricked their device by installing the wrong software for the device.
Is the Fuze the same as the Diamond? (They look identical)
What is the preferred way to back up the entire device or is it even possible with standard software? Most of what I found backs up PIM info.
When a program (Taskmanager 3.1) says to minimize, where does it go? How do you bring it back to the foreground or do you have to install a taskbar manager?
I actually have more I want to ask but that probably wouldn't be prudent. I think if I could help myself better once I understand what software I can and can't use with my phone.
Many thanks in advance and apologize for noobing up your forum =P

I'll try to answer some of your questions.
1) Normally, software will say windows mobile 5 or 6 as a requirement along with maybe .Net Framework. If it's for Windows Mobile most likely it'll work. Just have to try it and see.
2) Your programs are probably not installing because you may not have the required .Net Framework. I know Advance Config requires .Net Framework 3.5. So if you don't have it, install it. You can find it here or from Microsoft's website. You need the Windows CE or Compact version.
3) The Fuze is similar to the Diamond but don't go trying to install ROMs that are made for the Diamond. Use the ones in the Raphael forums.
4) If you want to backup your entire device, use a program such as Sprite Backup. This will make a full backup of entire system excluding ROM. However, if you want to do a restore, you need to make sure you have the same ROM installed, if not, it will create a lot of problems.
5) With TaskManager, when you minimize it just continues to run in the background. Program is still loaded and taking up memory/etc. Similar to when you minimize something in Windows. To bring it back, you can view the TaskManager and restore to foreground.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Wow,
Thanks you for the quick and non condescending reply. I've been surfing more since I posted and hopefully I could get you to elaborate on a few things.

I did the .Net install and it went without a hitch but still no joy. I noticed on the authors support forums that others are having the same problem but no clear solution has been posted. /Sigh
I was thinking I needed to follow a procedure similar to the one listed here where you have to install a certificate and make some policy changes in the registry but since I can't find any info specifically for the Fuze I haven't done anything yet other than download the certificate that was linked in that post.
I should mention I am not a complete computer illiterate, and am fully comfortable with the registry and even more advanced techniques if necessary. I should also mention that I don't plan on replacing my rom at all. Just want to keep it to basic reg hacks, software installs, and some theming once I get things working the way I want.
I did already change one registry policy key (0000101a) to "1" from a thread I found on these forums, as it is something easily changed back but of course it did not help.

I understand what you said but what I was trying to figure out is how to recall it from the background. It doesn't show up in the TF3D task list when it's minimized so I was wondering if you had to click on the task bar or do some certain trick to bring it to the fore-front. The ability to move between programs easily is my biggest gripe so far as I seem to have to open and close the keyboard, hit home or back a lot to move around. I would love the ability to hit some hot key or some secret spot on the screen to launch taskmanager and then I could use it to go to whatever program I wanted.
I have seen a few bugs in TM_3.1 that cause crashes, but it is an awesome program and hopefully the developer will keep working out the bugs. If there is another program you would recommend that accomplished the same type of functionality I'd be interested in trying it out.
Thanks again for your friendly help.

Just looked at the contents of that cab referenced from that link I posted. It is just a Setup.xml file with the following contents.
<wap-provisioningdoc>
<characteristic type="SecurityPolicy">
<parm name="4119" value="144"/>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>
Any thoughts?
As for .Net, the following is from Modaco, and I found that it worked like a charm:
How to install and use .NET Compact Framework 3.5
If you're a developer or have knowledge of .net Compact Framework, you'll be aware that version 3.5 has shipped. You'll be aware that it offers a number of enhancements in features, stability and performance, and you'll likely also know that it provides full backwards compatability with previous versions of the Compact Framework. What you may NOT know is that when CF 3.5 is installed on a device, applications that target previous versions of the Compact Framework will continue to run against the old versions, and 3.5 and previous versions will live side by side on the device. Only when new devices come along will we see ONLY 3.5 on a device.
This presents a number of problems, namely
• Users who deploy CF 3.5 to their device but use applications targeting older versions will not benefit from the 3.5 performance improvements
• Developers who develop apps for pre CF 3.5 frameworks cannot easily test their applications ready for when 3.5 only devices come along
Thankfully, help is at hand in the form of a little known Compact Framework 3.5 powertoy named '.Net Configuration'. The application, which is available at Microsoft, provides the user with full granularity of control over the .net CF on their device. You can see installed versions, change the used CF version for a particular application or change the used CF version for all applications run on your device! Perfect!
Sadly in Microsoft's infinite wisdom the application in question is tucked away in simple EXE inside the 6.2MB download and somewhat hard to find, so i've taken the liberty of packaging it up into a CAB here that installs it with it's own Start Menu shortcut.
- Run '.Net Configuration' from your Start Menu
- Navigate to the 'Device Policy' tab and select version 3.5
- Select 'Apply' then 'OK'
That's it, you're done!
Thanks kindly but I'm guessing now that myself or a piece of software I've installed has borked my ability to install software. It seems I can install exe files but no cabs, including the one you posted will install.
As I've stated I have not made any attempts to unlock anything yet but have installed some software and made some registry tweaks. I wish I could see what exactly is happening like Procmon does for windows to pinpoint the problem, but I might just have to resort to a hard reset if I can't figure it out.
I'm open to any ideas but if I don't figure it out tonight I guess I'll reset tomorrow. Thanks for the guidance and help.
Cheers,

You have a SD card?
Gimme some time and I write you a little 101 how to deal with the Fuze.

You might want to double-check that registry hack to make sure it's correct. Seems like a big coincidence that the one registry hack you've made so far is to allow unsigned cabs to install and the biggest problem you seem to be having is that you can't get unsigned cabs to install....

Yeah I gave that a shot but no joy. That wasn't the only reg hack I did but the only relating to "Unlocking". I haven't touched anything I wasn't pretty sure about. For instance I have looked at all the tweaks for speeding up the TF3D using cache setting but the numbers don't match so I never tried it. If I didn't understand what the tweak was I stayed away.
I did the PTT button tweak for voice/camera and played around with the cities for the weather app. Other than that I can't think of anything else I touched in the registry but I did a lot of looking.
On the other hand I have installed a good bit of software to try out. I have also rearranged my menu items by deleting shortcuts in the start menu folder. Even though I've done a good bit to the phone I think it might be best to start from scratch with a hard reset and start again with the knowledge I've gained in the past few days. My Opera browser has been getting a real workout with 40+ tabs going =P
I did find another thread here that has someone with a similar problem but the way it happened was entirely different. His fix was to wipe the phone and use the same software I was trying to install when I found this problem.

I took ecltech's advice and got Sprite Backup and made a backup already. I would rather fix the problem but it sounds like it might be difficult tracking it down so I'm prepared to start again. What would be great is finding some guide or general direction in what programs and or tweaks I should install and in what order and any other pertinent information regarding starting from scratch. "The Must Have" utilities and programs.
I can't believe how helpful everyone's been so far considering this is a developers board. I figured it was worth the risk to get chewed in the hopes of getting the best advice. With all the info surfing I've been doing it's clear that this is the site where it all happens.
Cheers and thanks again,

OMG!
I'm almost too afraid to admit it but at least I feel good that I figured it out on my own. I was smart enough to make a backup of the registry with CeRedEditor before doing anything major and remembered it had a compare feature. After loading it up It immediately occurred to me to look at HKCR\cabfile and that's where I found my answer.
I had downloaded a little free utility from SKTools called Cabinstaller that allows you to choose where programs get installed. Somehow the registry entry it made didn't correctly point to the executable. In any case I think I installed it late the other night and forgot about it because the exe files I installed after that installed fine. I should have tested it immediately and I wouldn't have had this problem. /sigh
Thank you everyone for the help and ideas and even though I've fixed this problem I still might do a full reset and start from scratch now that I got all mentally prepared to do it and start over feeling a little more confident in what I'm doing.
While it's on my mind right now and since I never got a solution for the question in my first post, is there a hack or small little program that will allow you to put a shortcut in either the top bar where the start menu is or in the bottom where the shortcut for the on screen keyboard is so I can invoke the Task Manager easily to help with navigating? I wouldn't even be opposed to a shortcut in the TF3D pop-up you get when clicking on the top right bar. It would be great if this could be done with a bloated program but not opposed to it if the program is useful.
Thanks again everyone. I guess I'll start a new post for any new questions. (I have lots but will try and figure out as much as I can by myself first.)
Cheers,
Eidolen

I think you're probably right about starting again from scratch. It would probably be less work than tracking down what's causing your problem and then you'll be starting with a cleaner slate for installing everything going forward.
There are a few different threads on here about what constitutes "must have" apps for the Fuze and the one thing I can say is that no two people agree on the list! Your best bet is to seach out those threads and see which ones you think would be most useful to you. A great place to get started is at http://www.blownfuze.org using username and password 'xda' (without the quotes)
My suggestions for the generic must haves are:
Total Commander
PHM Registry Editor (or whichever reg editor you prefer)
Diamond Tweak
Diamond TF3D Config
Other basic programs that might be worth checking out depending on what you do on your fuze are:
PocketShield or S2U2 for locking the phone
TCPMP Core Media Player
TorchButton for using the LED flash as a flashlight
BeyondPod or pRSS Reader for RSS feeds and podcasts
GoogleMaps and/or Live Search
Good luck!
Sprite backup is included in your Fuze as original software. I always keep a full backup copy on my Sd card of a good clean WM 6.1 install with all the must have tweaks done already. You will find it saves alot of headaches when you mess something up trying things out. After that I do a weekly backup as I add more and more stuff over time.
does diamond TF3D Config or diamond tweak work with this ROM version?
Thanks yzf750, I am preparing to do just that. I am getting prepared for a hard reset now once I notate what I want to keep that's on my phone already. Hopefully I can get it set up by the time my SD card arrives this coming week and can do the backup to it for keeps.
I read a blog post about doing a soft reset after a hard reset to prevent the ATT software from installing and I think I really want to try that. I just need to make sure I install the stuff I want to keep like TF3D manually afterwards. I'm hoping to find a more detailed guide for the procedure than what was posted though.
I'll post back and report if the smoke genie escapes or not.

some n00b guidance
Ok so i have been looking at these forums for a few days now doing homework before i even get the phone(its ordered). So my questions are
1. if i have AT&T unlock the phone(i know someone who works there so i hope they can help out) do i still need to do the hardspl to change radios etc?
2. Whats really the difference between all these roms built by users and just using BuildOS(im assuming this works on GSM phones and not just CDMA because its from PPC) to build your own ROM? and do most of these tweeks come prebuilt into these roms or do u still need to to other stuff? i.e reg tweaks etc, like i think it would be better for me to just build a rom with BuildOS with the apps i want etc and not keep flashing all the time
3. Is GPS still a problem for people?, i think ill just use tomtom or garmin and hope for the best as its not a huge concern. After looking around i guess its just a matter of finding the radio that works best for the individual, so anyone in the .US new england area have any recommendations of the best radio in the northeast like NYC area?
4. whats a good order to do this stuff?, i plan on using the phone for a couple days or so as stock just to get the general feel of the OS in general. then prolly flash the ROM with a custom BuildOS ROM(unless someone can provide the difference between BuildOS and say PROven ROM), then do w.e else needs to be done. ive seen the recommeded tweaks, just not sure if they still need to be done with a flashed ROM. not really looking for a game phone more office apps like RDP and irc etc, sys admin tools
Basically i think theres just a ton of info on here which is a good thing but im just getting started on Winmo although flashing etc dosent intimidate me so im eager to get started just a little unclear on some things and cant seem to find the answer just surfing, so any help or links to some stuff i might have missed is appreciated. Pretty much just want a smooth runnin ROM thats not stock of course, decent gps reception and the apps i want. thanks all
Look here, I made a little write-up for the basics using a stock ATT ROM. I ran this routine actually twice on my phone (ROM flashing junkie) so it should be fairly complete.
I have to note that, in most cases at least, I know what I do and can "recover" from a ROM flash within ~ 30 minutes, having all software, tweaks and contacts restored.
Regarding ROMs
That's an open can of worms with two next to it waiting. Read the threads and read the problems and decide later if you want to flash or not. If you are not used to WinMo phones it's perhaps better to hold back a week or two.
Some ROMs are built from original Raphael builts others are based on WinMo 6.1 but contain partially applications and tweaks from other HTC devices. The latest build # need not to be the best. For example RRE's ROM is based on the original ATT ROM and he created a really nice good performing ROM while other Chefs rip out first all guts and basics of a ROM (making it "naked") adding features and programs later. That's a more or less political discussion what's better and what's not and you have to decide yourself based on what you read and/or experience. For MY part I know Monx/HT from the Tilt times and always appreciated his work and speedy ROMs and he continued the same line on the Raphael/Fuze though it took him some time to come where he is right now.
As said all political in that regards, almost all ROMs out there ARE GOOD and have advantages in the one or the other area.
Tweaks
Yes the tweaks work even for a stock ATT ROM with ATT's TouchFlo/Manila (though I think it's plain ugly).
GPS
Again a difficult subject. For example the stock GPS (enabled or disabled assisted GPS settings) works kinda well with google maps BUT doesn't perform as expected with 3rd party GPS apps (TomTom, iGO). Keep in mind a lot came from other devices and for example iGO on the Tilt rocked down to the street number with no lag at all where the Fuze is doing more "guesstimating" than performing (compared to the Tilt).
Backup
Do a PIM backup once or twice a week and do a FULL backup once a week or if you installed new software after you confirm that you like it. If you wreck your phone for whatever reason AND you stay with the SAME ROM a full restore will work.
Just Wow!
That's an impressive piece of work there. I haven't stopped reading or poking around while I'm waiting for my SD card to get here and had quite some experience today. I did read the thread regarding doing a "Non-Bloat" Install and actually started to do it but stopped when I realized there still seems to be some residual bugs to the process. I figured for now even with the little bit of confidence I've gained I'd wait on that a little longer.

I forgot to check the memory and storage readings sadly but I figured this list could be checked against the full bloat version to see what processes and services could be killed. I figured I'd play with a full working install so if anything didn't work I would know it was from myself or software I installed instead of guessing if it was a side effect of the no bloat process. Also I could learn what the bloat was and strip it away.
Once I decided on Bloat I started a Log/Diary of everything I did for my own reference and thought it might be useful for troubleshooting later. Everything was going smooth until I decided to take on the behemoth named RealVGA.
Luckily I made a full Sprite backup previous to playing with it and am reinstalling that backup as I write this.
If there is one piece of advice I could give from the little knowledge I've gained so far is that most of the upper-end hacks/tweaks software that is available are living breathing complex entities and are not to be taken lightly. Each one needs to be thoroughly researched and understood before using unless you have an older device that has been supported for a long time. I find very little information on using most software regarding the Fuze even though it is very similar to other devices. Truth is, it is not identical which can make things hairy at times. Anyway the more you fail, the more you learn.
For other Fuze owners out there I'll post my personal log so you have an idea what programs I had trouble with and what I tried to do to resolve them. For sure I had huge problems with RealVGA as well as PocketCM and PocketCm Keyboard. It's a shame too as they all are outstanding upgrades.
Well I think I'll be ready for your tutorial when my card gets here so I will be sure to report back to let you know how it went. I already learned a lot just from reading it. For one I didn't know you could do anything over usb if you cancelled the ActiveSync. I just used that trick while restoring my phone and still haven't done a sync. I'm sure that guide will be a huge help to many like myself.
Huge Thanks!

RealVGA is nice but not sure it's worth this effort. Just too many problems.
Noticed graphics in TF3D are much slower and laggy now as well.
"All Settings" still borked Not sure what else to try at this point.
Good info on this subject is hard to come by. Most ppl seem to have good luck with this app.
Went to re-tick the skin option in RealVGA but it was still ticked. hmmm
What I think is needed is an app that could swap resolutions on the fly with a hotkey. ( Prolly not technically possible)
At least you could have normal usage and only use for certain apps that really benefit from it.
After another reboot the "Disable phone skin" is checked again. Guess it can't be unticked.
Un-ticked "No enlarge title Bar" in Diamond TF3D Config
I am able to open the "Programs" link from the start menu, wonder why settings is screwed.
Tried settings again, no joy, was able to use home key though this time. Not locked up.
Start menu does not work now though. Yikes, had to use reset this time.
Throws arms in the air!
Hard Reset =(
You are funny eidolen.
If you want copy the files I provided to your device (since you don't have a DS yet) and play with it.
You'll hard reset anyway when the SD arrives - LOL
Your also going to find at some point that the more and more tweaks and modifications you make, more problems will start sufacing. I was a rom flashing junkie like many on this forum for 2 years. Since I replaced my prior phone with the Fuze I am running just the stock rom without bloatware and a FEW select tweaks (includes radio change). It runs fast, works good and I dont have to soft reset it all the time.
Take a look at every custom rom, Im not putting any of them down, but after time the threads on them become 100 plus pages long, the number of other fixes to get them running right become impossible to keep track of. It becomes a daily job of just trying to keep that rom working without breaking some other feature or getting it to work right. They put out weekly fixes on most custom roms. They start out with the right intention, but it soon becomes just a bloated non oem rom after time.
Its addicting and fun, but at some point a person just wants to use the phone instead of hard resetting it all the time, flashing roms nightly and trying to figure out how to fix stuff in each rom.
I reached that point now and my fuze is outstanding without having to spend days tinkering with it. It is snappy, reponsive and ALL the software I have installed on it works, and the GPS works flawlessly even inside my house.
But again, your "hands on" approch as your doing now, is probaly the best way to learn
teh bestest
between these last few posts and my little chat with our neighbors PPC on there irc channel i am pretty confident i know what the deal is now, you guys have been a great help, i think im going to play a bit with some roms of course but eventually land on a bloat free standard rom with some added apps like putty and irc etc for sysadmin work, on that note yzf750 could u tell me exactally what u have running on yours sounds like its what im looking for.
