How to change file extension using the Touch Pro - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi all, my first post!
Obviously u can tell by my nickname that i'm a long time symbian user, trying wm for the 1st time in a long long while.
Anyway, i was wondering if there's a way to change the file extension usingi the phone itself. Im trying to change a .zip to .theme but i cant figure out the proper way to do it. I know i can do this easily using a pc but im at work and cant do that stuff here, so im wondering if there's a way to do it using the phone without downloading another application to do it.

Oh, and yes, i did do a search for this already. Couldnt pinpoint exactly what im looking for.
Thanks!

Use resco explorer

i downloaded 2008 Resco Explorer, but cant figure out how to change the file extension...
oh well, i guess this is one not too many are familiar with.

No, it's just too obvious for most people to bother with. Go to the file you want to change, hold the stylus or your finger down on the and a menu will pop up. Scroll down to "rename". Then name it whatever you want.

Not so obvious if you read the entire question.

Renaming the file is not the issue. It's the extension.

I don't use resco, but it's trivial with total commander.

How can I get the HTC Home weather for my city?

I've already done searches for this, but I just haven't found a simple answer for a newbie like me.
What I want is to keep the weather in the tab like it is on the stock HTC home, but I want to be able to choose my city by zip code. I'd also like to be able to get radar images.
Is there an easy way to do this?
Also, it would be really cool if there was an option to have it show weather based on your GPS location.
Thanks!
theres no "newbie" way...you have to get the file from your phone's "Windows" folder (using file explorer), get it on a real computer, and edit the file using notepad...just copy the format already there for your city, save it, and put it back where you found it in the windows folder...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319187
Once again, a person who isnt looking hard enough in the forums...

In all fairness, the search function on this site sucks. I've resorted to using google to search "forum.xda-developers.com" under advanced search.

Hey thanks for the link.
But, what I would REALLY like, that I haven't seen posted yet, is instead of having to input a city is if the weather would just update based on GPS location. Is anyone working on this? Or is there currently an available modification to the HTC home weather for this? I think that would be the cat's ass.
Thanks again!

Why you think a cat's ass is a good thing is beyond me...
I live with four cats and I avoid their asses as much as possible!

[Q] How to overwrite Htchomesetting.xml

I have an edited htchomesettings.xml that i want to put on my jade.
Everytime i try to drag 'n drop this file into my windows folder, i get the 'acced denied, be sure the file isn't read-only, in use or that you have enough space left'-error.
When looking at the file's properties (with Resco or total commander) it seems to be fixed in the Rom and i think that's the reason i can't overwrite it.
I already googled it and found some topics concerning this problem, and generally they all give the same advice:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2736263&postcount=500
the problem is, i already used both programs, and apparently it does not seem to work, or i'm doing it wrong or i'm overlooking something...
So, can anyony tell me how to overwrite this file with total commander or resco, if this is possible.
Many thanks, and sorry if this is a stupid question, i searched the web for about 3 hours before asking you guys .
It's a little easier than that. The only thing you need to do is make sure that the plugin is not running. In other words, deactivate the plugin in the Settings menu. Then, do a soft reset, just to make sure that the system has stopped using it. Then you can copy and paste with any program that you like. I have found that using a PC (via ActiveSync) works best. Good luck!!
Thanks for the quick reply thunder.
Unfortunately, it did not work out. I deactivated TouchFlo already (and did the reset). And still it gives me the same error.
"Cannot copy HtcHomeSettings. Make sure your device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type"
This time I simply used Active sync as you told me.
Again, does it have something to do with the fact that this file is hardcoded on the rom?

Unfortunately, if it is built into the rom, you will probably have a hard time copying over it. Have you tried to edit the file directly on the phone? I believe that there are a few xml editors for ppc floating out there, you could try that. Also, is there anything in particular that you want to do that requires you to modify the xml? Reason I am asking is because you could use M2D Customizer if you are only looking into modifying some settings. Hope this helps...
Allright, found out how to overwrite it!
Made a .m2dct file containing my preferred theme and settings, then i edited the included HtcHomeSettings.xml file.
Then i used the M2D customizer to load the .2mdct file, and that worked perfectly.
Thanks for the hint, Thunder!

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it .That ★ is pretty special.
What you could do as a workaround:
1) keep the symbol somewhere convenient (e-mail, webpage or MS Office document stored on phone)
2) copy-paste it for each site you're trying to log in to.
3) tell Opera to save the username/password
Better than nothing, I guess...

Only after pasting, or is the one you're trying to copy also being displayed like that?
If the original is also displayed as a rectangle, most likely the ★ is not present in any of the default fonts. You could try addin an extra font that contains the character somewhere on your HD2 and using font linking.
I have no idea where to look for a solution if the original ★ is displayed fine, but is just not pasted correctly though.

would you care to elaborate? it wouldnt let me copy it, and theres was nothing in the windows>font folder on my phone to start with
Just copy the file from the font folder in your computer to your device, and then move it to \Windows using Total Commander or Resco.
Another possible solution - try to log in using this as your username:
Code:
[&#9733!]
Replace the exclamation mark (!) with a semicolon (;)

Download attached font below (you can get it from your computer) and past it to your Windows Mobile: Windows/Fonts using file explorer such as Resco explorer.

That's the HTML code for the star. I doubt that will work as it won't be decoded from HTML before the login process takes place.
Just one thing that comes to mind - when you copied and pasted it and got the rectangle in the login box, did you actually try to log in? I assume you did, but I only ask because it shouldn't matter whether you have the font or not - you just want the correct character. The font is only for visual purposes, but software will still read the character as exactly what it is, regardless of what it looks like.
thanks nsider, that did work but john now I think about I think I didnt bother trying to paste the square in, oh well, its sorted now ;D
I didint try it but maybe its the solution you are looking for.
1.Install finger keyboard and MyMobiler.
2. Connect your phone to your pc using active sync. My Mobilers should start and you can control your phone from your pc.
3. Open Finger Keyboard's config screen and at the shortcut tab chose one and rename it (lg for example).
4. Copy the star symbol from your pc into My Mobiler, in the value field of the shortcut.
5. Apply the changes to the finger keyboard, disconnect your phone and try using it.
Shortcuts in finger keyboard are activated by a long press of a button.
Let me know if it works.

Windows Shell Ext. For Apk's?

Looking for a simple small windows program that will simply show correct icons for .apk's on my PC
I set a default .ico for all my apk's but something showing the correct .ico for apk's would be great.

Not anymore, i might have a solution for you
first get the image you want to use as an icon and resize it to be EXACTLY 256x256 and in .ico format
then click run in start menu and type regedit
allow UAC if needed
make backup of registry
if you want to just change the icon to know what it is, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.apk
if it isnt there, right click on the folder and create new key called .apk
check if the (default) entry is blank, if so, then create a new key in the same place as .apk and call it something.Assoc.APK (not tested)
in the new key, create a key called DefaultIcon, and in that create a REG_EXPAND_SZ and put the full path in quotes of the .ico file
tell me if it doesnt work and include screenshots
Thanks for the reply...whats I actually ended up doing is making an .ico of a droid and basically setting the file extension within windows to use that ico with any apk...thanks for the info above though
