I'd like to see how many G1s have root RIGHT NOW how many are still rootable and how many are locked up ATM.
edit: I dont think this will be an accurate poll of the % of how many G1s in the "world" are unlocked, just a view of the % of how many are rooted amongst the profile of a XDA-Dev type, ie: early adopters, tinkerers, hacker types, tech geeks and any other stereotype you'd like to throw in, but my point is this sample has a bit of bias.
that said, im suprised at the #s so far, its under 2 dozen at this point, but I'd have figured there would be more locked, I'll be intrested to see it after a good number of votes how it goes...
THE SO CALLED "l33tspeak" was meant tounge in cheek, please don't think I actually use those terms, C'mon guys I don't type in "business english" but gimme some more credit than that...jeez ;(

same here. first day i got my phone it asked me to update so of course i did.
selling it on ebay for a dev phone though so its all good
my rc30 story
I bought mine on day 1 here in the US so I knew I had to deny the update till I got the JF rc30 worked out, so I was ready, I use my g1 as my alarm in the morning and when it went off 1 day (6am) I picked up the phone and touched the screen while doing so...by the time I looked at the screen it was flashing rc30.....
But I had a replacement on the way from tmob cause my trackball died 15 days after I bought it so, I couldn't take it back I had to get a swap from tmob, and it was not upgraded yet, so I have been both boats...
Bhang
I rooted with JF's first RC30 and then flashed to RC30 v1.2.
I have the original JF rc30, I need to put JF 1.2 and the DEV boot loader.
Mine keeps popping up to update.
Still reading up on the benefits of custom firmware so going to keep pressing "update Later" till I decide.
EDIT: Stupid G1 hung then quickly popped up with the update popup as soon as I pressed enter. Great.
Wish I could root mine. :-(
I ordered my phone the minute it came available for pre-order, and I've been following AndroidGuys, ModMyGPhone, and this site ever since. Rooted G1 here, thanks to this forum though.

it was meant sarcasticly, and I know sarcasam never translates well in forums, I was making a joke
Preorder owner rooted as soon as JF came out with his mod. Moved all the caches, Installed all the tweaks and will install dev bootloader just have't had the time.
I got my g1 december 9th (yesterday) and it already shipped with rc30.very dissapointed!
so if we already have rc30, we can't undo it?
^ nope
..too short...
I hope that 1 guy got his flashed
At this point there is no way to change from a "real" RC30 to one of JFs RC30s... but I think the dev bootloader could be the key, if somebody can get the dev bootloader on those ota rc30s and its all done but it is signed using the "dev keyset" maybe some balsy htc or goog or android disgruntled dev/employee will leak the secret key used to sign the real OTA updates. Probably not. To easy. It happened to dish network, and has kept lotsa peeps watching TV. Kickin Chicken baby. So it does happen just not often.
Who knows I'm sure when it happens it will be 1 slick quick dirty lil hack.

2 days after I got mine I rooted it. Was scared to death, i didn't have the funds to just run out and get another one at full price. So i took the risk, and rooted. I'm happy as a lark.
i've rooted around a bit -- renamed ota certs file to block updates, relocated browser cache to sd, etc, but i'm holding off on flashing untill i have a really good reason to.
r00ted R30 G1 White
the day i got the unit for my gf for a early xmas gift i looked at it and it was at R29 i got all the stuff needed and flashed the unit with the recovery image and then to R30 happy happy JOY JOY

First things first, I've been in the wireless industry since 2002, but I've never attempted a phone hack in my life. I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux, and the furthest I've gotten with phone customization is some stock BB theme for my 8130.
I needed a new handset, and since I'm in the industry anyway, I decided I needed to keep current on Andriod, since I had a feeling it was going to be huge. So I trekked on down to my local T-mo store and picked up the white model.
Last night, I decided to see if I could get the g1 to tether one of our test laptops. While I wasn't exactly successful, the threads that lead me here (and to other areas) made me aware of just what this phone was capable once you re-attached it's gonads.
Long story short, in a few "short" hours, I'd downgraded to rc29, rooted my device, reflashed to RC30, and am a happy camper. The results are in my sig.
If you're overwhelmed by the mass of information regarding these processes: don't be. Just keep reading this forum, the instructions are clear but to a neophyte like myself (and you) it'll be confusing.
Keep trying, you won't be disappointed.

Congrats!
Make sure you read up on moving over the caches and how to install apps to the sd card. It's all well worth the effort and rewarding in the end.

Congrats.
I was in the same boat as you when I got my first smart phone, TMo Wing (Herald). It was daunting when I first started reading here and you're literally blasted in the face with loads of information but with patience and lots of reading it became clear.
Yeah i second that the people here are great, they make the most complex hacks doable by ordinary people. I believe that no one should have a non-rooted G1.
dont forget to check out the new RC30 v1.41 from JF that includes Multi Touch and some other goodies.
I agree. I'm not a complete noobie, but I'm far from experienced in this kind of thing. Multitouch is really cool!
The only problem I'm having is that when I downgraded to RC29, I lost my Wifi connections. I enable Wifi, and I don't get the Wifi symbol any more. It sees my wifi, but when I type my password in correctly, it says it can't connect. My connection has always worked flawlessly before. It really stinks, because cellphone signals are really bad here, and I can't even browse the market anymore.
edit: Boy, am I dumb, I forgot I changed my router password. Duhhh!!! Wifi connects now!
Haha yea I agree its kind of overwhelming when you start reading these forums. I rooted my G1 a little over 24 hours ago and was kind of nervous thru the entire process and i'm a unix / linux administrator. I really haven't had much experience working with Linux on embedded devices.
I haven't bothered much with the themes yet. I'm planning on rolling my own android image or keeping it up to date with the dev branch.
The sky is the limit =)
First timer here as well. Took me a little under 1hr. The longest part was formatting my 8gb sdhc card.
Love the multi touch and task manager so far. Can't wait to hack some more stuff.
Glad to hear stories similar to mine. I posted this in the hopes that other newbies like myself would read it and take heart. You seriously do NOT want to be using this device with the stock T-mo rom.

A co-worker of mine that works in another department got a G1 as well. I almost feel sorry for him since I know he's gotta be running the stock RC30 since I know he's not tech savvy at all.
I am having all kinds of trouble getting mine hacked. I got down to rc29 fine and than I have got the update for rc30 jf 1.3.1 rom saved on my sd card but i cannot get it to update on my phone. I reboot by holding home and power and than I hit alt+L Alt+S and it won't update

Wait a hot minute. You want to go to Dream Development Thread and download the Jf update ver 1.41. You then save it on sd card but rename the entire zip file to update.
P.S. Make sure you have Jf's recovery image and if this just sounds like crazy talk then look at this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480

Hi all,
I've just got an T-Mobile G1 and I would like to turn it to the Dev version with the modified RC30.
After going around these informative threads, I'm getting confused now
I would like to have a rooted G1 with HardSPL and JF v1.41 image. Are those steps correct to obtain such aim?
1. Downgrading to RC29 and rooting my device
2. Installing HardSPL (file for RC30). Now, is my G1 considered ADP1.1? Can I install any image without losing the root?
3. Reflashing to JF 1.41. Which image should I use now (ADP1.1 or RC30)?
It's kinda new thing for me but this thread of ninetoes did give me some encouragement. I'm eager to try it. Please kindly give me some advises
So anyone gives me an advice please!

I have been wavering back and forth on deciding to root or not. I am leaning toward doing it but I am so freakin busy with school and work that I was going to wait a few weeks until I had a chunk of time to read up and really understand what I am about to do.
My decision seems to have been forcibly accelerated today when the t-mobile update screen popped up. I have pressed update later a few times so far but wanted to ask a quick question before I decide which way to go with this. I want the new features in RC33 (and maybe better battery too?!?), but the additional features with the JF rooted versions seem way better.
Can anybody verify yet if I go ahead with the official RC33 update will I still be able to get root using the current methods? If not, any ideas if this is going to be possible? I know that is speculation but since its been out for a bit now I figured somebody would have some insight on this.
Thanks for any input you all can offer. All you guys around this site were great when I was messin around with my Shadow/Juno before I got the G1.
Thanks again!
Nick
Go ahead and go to the official RC33 update, it will still work. JesusFreke himself said that the update doesn't touch the bootloader, so the downgrader still works on this version.
It worked for me from RC33 official, it'll work for you too.
I understand your feeling about rooting. I also have limited free time between school, work, gf, and families. I say just do the rooting. It only took me couple hours on the weekend to get it done. To be honest, I found the tutorial on this site is a little too complicated and can be intimidating for those that not comfortable with linux command line.
just follow the rooting method on this thread below:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f28/rooting-your-g1-made-easy-11825/
I did it and never look back. I haven't heard that RC33 does any significant change on battery life, so I don't think it's worth the upgrade. I say go with Developer firmware (ADP1.x). ability to dump cache on sdcard + 3G wifi tethering + no google initial login = WIN with root
Yeh if you don't have time go for it. Like the previous posters have mentioned is does not make any irreversible changes that you would not be able to root the phone later when you have time. I would rather suggest following the tutorial on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
because it has all the links needed embeded right into the tutorial and is very straight forward about what and how to do to get a modified root rc33 on your phone and start living Android like it was intended lol.
Thanks...
Thanks for the info in all of your responses. I went ahead and updated to RC33 with the official update this morning. I think that it seems to be running better. After the update my avaliable storage space went from like 6 to 23 mb which I thought was odd. I think that I will end up rooting my G1 before cupcake, or the next update that comes our way. I am just going to wait until I have time to mess around with it some more. It does seem like an easy process but it is not without chance for issues as I have read from other posts.
Thanks again for the responses and advice.

I know its probable already been asked but for the life of me i could not find anything. So i rooted my phone now i have to send it in for a replacment. What should i do so t-mobile cant tell i rooted. Thanks and sorry if its a repost.
Well, afaik the rooting process is ONLY software based, as is all of the rest of the process. Ergo it shouldnt have been an illegal "mod" that you've made, and ergo you should be fine, as long as you havnt done any hardware modifications

It does void your warranty because you are altering your phone in a way that T-mobile didn't intend. If you want to revert it back to normal, flash the original bootloader and RC29. You should be fine with that.
One you flash to RC29 doesnt it take care of everything or do you still need to do more, before you send it back.
dont worry
I exchanged mine under the 14 vday buyers remourse cause the bt was shot, I had it 100% rooted hard SPL everything even a theme, all I did is wipe the theme, then sent it back tith jf's RC33 and the robots on skateboards Hard SPL..
To top it off I also forgot to return, the headset since it was a cool 2 piece, tho i may have sent back a one piece, can't recall and I forgot the charger(mains) and the lil G1 cozy also.
this was like a month ago, did want the earphones, but just forgot the rest since if you dont have it back to Tmob by 3 days they kill 5 pupies in your name and charge you 500$ but I have yet to hear about any of the missing items or the hacked up firmie, I bet they dont look to close at them, im sure wiping all the mem and starting over is one of the first steps in the refurb process....
If the T-mobsters knock on my door I'll post it up, but Im not holding my breath...
dont worry about getting it back to stock, I wouldn't/didn't

i played stupid and asked about rooting the phone to several t-mo customer service people and they all said that rooting the phone is just basically changing the way the phone handles certain things, granted i would go back to stock firmware anyway but they have told me several times that if i were to root my phone there would be no issue with it, and i even met an instore rep who rooted his and was using my theme

We get the Android 2.5 update in January!!!!! When Cyanogen/Dwang put this into their rom, everything is going to be EPIC
is there any actual proof for this?
if you look at the comments below the article droidheaven even said to go and ask t-mobile. i'm going to do that and hope.
UPDATE: I just talked to a T-Mobile Rep and he said he never heard of a 2.5 update coming in January. He checked and there is no documents. But there is hope. He also told me that there is an update and he won't be surprised if it was 2.5. One more thing. He said it is coming quickly.

boys this is HTC we are talkin about, if ur device is older than 6 or 7months old you get no support whatsoever i was shocked to hear the hero was getting 2.1 so il be amazed if the G1 gets 2.5 i hope u do tho
HTC already gave up on the Dream, however, Android Alliance will never give up on its devices, while T-Mo has to support it at least until it actually has a single device with a different CPU
if only the mytouch gets the 2.5 update can the g1 get it too? i don't mean like OTA update but cyanogen/dwang/someone turns 2.5 into a ROM?
they should really make devices that can go up at least one in updates (like from 1.x to 2.x or somewhere along that line)
AWSOME
This means I loose hope for good touchscreen with Keyboard from Tmobile
YES APPS are back in bussniess
T-mobile G1-Black

coming but not soon iPhone apps on g1 installer.
EDIT: Yes I know that this has been a long standing issue...but I never heard of it until it happened to me!!! So no need to come in and comment like 4 or 5 others felt the need to do with "lol this is old news u r teh dumbz hurr" I just wanted to bring this up to any new captivate owners like myself :]
If for some reason you have a hankering for some stock 2.1 from your captivate like I did for whatever random reason tonight......if you see an an OTA (Over The Air) Update for your captivate....DO NOT DO IT!!!!!! I say this because I did this tonight thinking that MAYBE this was some form of a 2.2 silent update push..or hell just some bugfixes would have been nice...so i went ahead and downloaded it, it prompted for a restart so it could flash it......and when it attempted to flash...it got about 50% and failed! Well at this point im thinking...awesome...ATT at its finest. So it said it was going to reboot back to android, I waited patiently...waited.....it hot about 3 minutes with phone in hand and screen off when i feel 2 *buzz* buzz* ! I think to myself HOORAY! its okay ....well i was wrong...that was my Captivates last words so to speak. I have tried plain powering on the phone....trying to go into recovery, trying to go into download mode even using a JIG to get back into download mode.....nothing the screen is blank completely, seems as if its not even getting power. :\ I am now the sad owner of a Captivate shaped door stop /facedesk .....Thankfully i yelled at the ATT people on the phone tonight enough to get a replacement phone lol! I am greatfull for this and felt as if i should pass this along to you guys until this gets sorted out. And no im not the only one thats had this problem

I'm of the assumption that a OTA bricks less than 0.1% of the devices that attempt an update. Granted that may be a large number if the number of devices are large..but not much of a chance to brick in the big picture
