ROM update question.. - General Questions and Answers

HI all,
Im a major noob. I have the Verizon VX 6900 (HTC touch/vogue). My problem is I wanna hack the heck out of it, but I wanna upgrade to Winmo6.1. I had a bad experience with my moto q, where a windows update deleted my contacts. If i were to update my rom from the HTC website, would that same thing happen? If so, can I somehow copy my contacts to a microsd card beforehand?
waiting for your wisdom..

Welcome to the forum
After backup your contacts please READ here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Vogue

You have to back up your contacts before you flash, its not a bug.
ROM stands for read only memory, the easiest way to explain it is that it is like a cd rom. when you flash a new rom its like rewriting a cd, it deletes everything. if you backup your contacts before, you can restore them after.

Thanks
Ok, will do thanks guys

Do I ever need to re-Hard-SPL?

Just a quick question. I have used Hard-SPL on my phone and flashed back to the original firmware. Do I now need to re-Hard-SPL before I flash a WM 6.1 rom.
This seems to be the case for the Touch/Elf phones, just checking it's not the same on the Kaiser.
Thanks!
No, it should work OK. Are you getting an error?
Nope, no error. Just didn't want to fry my phone.
Thanks for the quick answer. WM 6.1 her i come...

Personally, I haven't found a 6.1 ROM using yet. By the time you set the phone up to your likings, it isn't worth wasting the time for the 6.1 (just my opinion!)
Hi all! I've deleted hardspl.exe from the root directory by mistake. Shoud I put it back if I'm gonna reflash it?

Noob trying to backup/change roms....

I'm sure the information is already on these forums, but there is so much to read that I'm not sure where to start and I really need it all in a easy to follow format.
Please can someone put down or link me to info on the following....
I have The Official T-Mobile 6.1 ROM on my phone and this is what I want to do:
1) Extract my 6.1 rom to be reinstated later
2) Get hold of the Official T-Mobile 6.0 ROM
3) Flash my phone back to the Official T-Mobile 6.0 ROM
4) Restore my backup via sprite (this is the only bit I know how to do)
5) Create an upgrade file in Sprite (I can probably figure this out)
6) Flash my phone back to the the Official T-Mobile 6.1 ROM that I extracted in step 1)
7) Restore my backups from 6.0 using the upgrade file I created in step 5)
Thanks in advance for any help/advice
DJ
/edit if this should be in Kaiser general please can someone move it for me. Ta.
Take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282, its a sticky on the Kaiser ROM development page.
Um, you should be able to search the forum for this info. I advise you do so as you'll get flamed by the moderators for posting without searching, which is one of the rules. Hope I don't get flamed for this post...
Thanks very much for you post
I still can't find how to extract my ROM, I'd like to post it on the forums because it is the newest one that T-Mobile have in the UK.

The OP is a lazy sumabich! You want us to prepare your dinner, draw your bath, and give you a backrub while we do all of the other things you requested. YUK!
I really don't see what you are trying to back up. You are asking for some very complicated things to do as a noob. People here do a lot of moving from rom to rom and using sprite isn't the best tool for this. I don't think sprite will do the job of making a backup from 6.0 to 6.1. Sprite should only be used for the same rom. Restore all your stuff the hard way through cabs and activesync.
Please can someone tell me how to extract the rom that T-Mobile put on my phone so that I can always change it back?
I'm going to cook my own tasty rom from some guides etc rather than going back to WM6.0.
But I want to save my T-Mobile 3.31.110.1 WWE rom before I start.
Thanks

Look first search for the Rom you have on the device now. You should be able to find the Orignial Tmobile Rom. THen just tuck it away. then you need to Hard SPL your phone and security unlock it. Then you need to READ go to the WiKI, Asking for detailed instructions, in the worng place is not a good idea. At this moment think of a Giant pool of hungry Sharks now picture yourself as hanging from a line just over the top of the water. you are now lowering into the water slowly but you are soon to be Someones Lunch. Now Run to the WiKi and read, read ,read...Do you want to be chum! or do you want to learn! everything you need to know is here in this forum, You need to look not ask! and last but not least WELCOME TO THE GROUP!

check out the Dumping your ROM video in this Thread. It should help you accomplish dumping your 6.1 ROM for cooking. The 6.1 ROM should be available from HTC's website (www.htc.com). Instead of switching back to 6.0 just to create an upgrade file (since you insist on using sprite) download and install Sprite 6.2.2. It will allow you to create a backup file of just your personal databases without having to revert back to 6.0 to create an upgrade file. It will also allow you to restore your backup without having Sprite installed on your new ROM. You are trying to make too much work for yourself.
Thanks for the replies
I'm on the HTC site trying to get the rom, but all I can find is HTC TyTn II and not Vario III.
I was under the impression that these devices were essentially the same, BUT I get the following message when I enter my serial number on the site:
"Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device."
I will have to dunp my rom instead I think because it's too new to be online yet, T-Mobile just upgraded it to this one a couple of weeks ago.

[q] radio help!!! :(

hey everyone,
i just updates my desire s with a new rom (not mentioning the name) and my phone is acting kinda crazy... as in the calls are not getting connected properly and half the time people complain they arent able to contact me either... the problem is im not much familiar about this stuff... bt, have a feeling it might be the problem with the radio. i tried restoring to older backups. no difference and realised that the radio doesnt get backed up.
i need help... does anyone know what to do about this...???
thank you in advance...

Relax.
And stop with the sad smileys...
The radio is not affected by a ROM flash, it is on a separate partition and you don't have to fiddle around with it if the problem has presented itself only after flashing a new ROM and was working alright previously.
Also, there is no disgrace in mentioning the ROM name, so please do tell us the following details:
Are you Revolutionary S-off or did you unlock using HTC Dev site?
What ROM are you currently using? Is this the first ROM you have flashed, coming from the stock one, or have you tried out other custom ROMs before this?
Let us know the answers to the above questions and we'll try our best to help.
Yeah, please tell us the name of the ROM, we'll be able to give you better help. Some AOSP ROMs (Oxygen, BlackICE) have calling issues. Also, as enimaamit said, a ROM does not change the Radio, it needs to be flashed separately (something i don't recommend you do). The problem is probably in the ROM

Yup. And thanks for that additional bit of info about Oxygen and BlackIce.
And another possibility is that this could be his first custom ROM (based on an official Sense ROM), and he might be coming from a stock ROM which he just unlocked using HTC Dev, so the kernel could still be stock... (if he didn't flash boot.img separately), and this might be allowing him to boot, but causing other issues like the one he just described.... I have an uncanny feeling that might be it!
I don't know, just letting loose the Sherlock inside
well, this wasnt my first custom rom... i have flashed from stock rom->cm nightly builds->oxygen->icecream sandwich 4.0 alpha builds to the current wp 7.0.4 rom by mmmcfc... i used to use his previous version-wp7.0.2 which was awesome and gave me no problems but, ever since i updated it, i have been having this problem. i tried flashing back to other roms as well and still kinda the same issue. and im on revolutionary s-off...
hope these answers are helpful... thanks for the reply guys...
EDIT: also, i used to have similar issues when i was in the stock rom at the very beginning which got solved later when i recieved an official update...i.e. before i s-off'd my phone...

He He He... guess i'm not much of a sleuth then!!
Are you sure the call drop issue is not a network provider problem {since it is happening on other ROMs as well, and it wasn't there before (your radio has been the same all along BTW)}
Have you tried putting your SIM in a basic phone and trying out whether the problem persists....this could indicate a network problem. I remember a few months ago Airtel service had gone to the dogs and everyone on Airtel (especially in Delhi) was writhing in agony...
Secondly, try using another carrier's SIM card in your DS and see if the problem still persists...
sry...i think u got me wrong der... i used to face the same problem on stock rom while i purchased the phone but, after updating it,it was pretty much and i never faced any problems until now. and i dont think its the carriers problem as im able to use the same sim card on a basic phone without any issues... and other users on the same carrier around me aint facing any problems with the network either... so, i guess im pretty much stuck and back to square one... :S

[q] htc hd2 installing stock 6.5 problem!

Hello guys!
I have installed Cyanogenmod 3.7.0 (android 2.3.7 version). It's MALGDR installed.
I want back to stock, but I'm not sure how.
I have downloaded the ROM from local HTC-site.
The rom is put on SD-card, so should I erase everything on SD card and make a partiinion FAT32 or can I do this AFTER I have installed WinMO 6.5?
Or could this occur some corrupt data or something during installl? Any help is highly appreciated.
Also, when I will start installing. Should I use the method on using VOLUME DOWN + POWER ON button, to get into that tri-colour screen and then plug in USB, wait for it to connect and then just drive from computer?
When I run the ROM from the computer it is like random rom install. It has to detect the device etc.. for it to install. This will not be any problem?
Thanks alot guys. I really hope someone with education around this will help me out.
Please any help!!
would like to give it a bump, so perhaps someone can help me.

I'd be very surprised if you were the 1st person to want to go from a Magldr booting ROM back to WM, so the answers you need are probably already there. I pointed you there purely because you'd be surprised how many people don't know their devices have specific forums.
Edit: Here you go. A quick google search found this...

Wow, that was a real nice thread. But I'm wondering about if I install without deleting partitions on SD card, and just run the ROM-file that I downloaded from HTC.
Can I do this? I'm really not sure how to exceed this prodedure, since I want radio and HSPL being all original.
Thanks for the thread though, mate. Hope you can help me out perhaps here!

Quick Questions (I think)

Hello users!
Just have a couple questions. I've recently switch from iPhone to Android (GSIII Obviously). A mistake? Maybe. lol. (My opinion). But if anyone could all so kindly help me. I am wanting to know the following,
Q 1. Where do I find kernels? (and any tutorials to install them) ( Im running CM10 for now, currently testing out other ROMs though.)
Q 2. What kind of files would I flash to my phone? Don't get that concept yet. ha.
Q 3. Whats the best way to back up? Pictures, contacts, any data.
Q 4. Will edit when I think of it again.
Read, read and read again. Check out the stickies in each sub-forum.
What's the point of Q&A? So I don't have to search and search... Thanks for the help... ha.
You can get yourself into a mess but not reading and doubling checking what you are about to flash. Just my two cents.

(Mostly) everything you need for the VZW GS3, As far as installing them, just make sure you have the right one for your rom (AOSP or TouchWiz, Jelly Bean or Ice Cream Sandwich), Download the Kernel, boot to recovery, wipe caches and flash away.

Roms and Kernels mostly. Once you get in to it, I would look into RPM and Modem flashing.

I use My Backup to back up Texts and call log. It can also backup pictures and contacts. For contacts though, Save them to Google, not your phone. Google will sync the contacts back to your phone once you log back in to your account and they are all accessible from contacts.google.com. For your pictures, I recommend Dropbox. When you sign in to the app, it asks if you want to automatically save your pictures and then everytime you snap a pic it throws it up to dropbox automatically.
Above all, READ READ READ! Nobody likes that guy who posts the same question as 50 other people in a thread...You know, that question that is answered in the OP
