verrrry strange happening - Touch Pro, Fuze General

so i was at my programs tab today and i suddenly noticed there was an extra plus box at the verry bottom in its own row. i was very puzzled and clicked it and it took me to the program list. when i hit back another box appeared!
i tried to actually add programs to them but it wont accept and now i have 2 extra plus boxes at the bottom of my tab
anyone else ever seen this??

i now have 4 extra they seem to be multiplying

More programs icons
Well you are not the only one My children also discovered that you can scroll the programs tabs down and so get not 9 but I think 18 icons for quick launch. After that it sometimes shows tabs with + sign but will not let to assign any programs to them. I think I saw in some configuration program also a possibility to manage these tabs.

i've noticed the same thing. now i'm up to 18 boxes and it seems to stay at 18.

I've got 9+9 boxes since the beginning and they are all fully functional.
TF3D 1.2.34837.3 1813.6 was originally installed on my Raphael GER version.

i thoguht 18 was normal? thats what ive always had
but im getting more than that below them that are not functional

This is actually an easy one to fix, and does not even require a soft reset.
TF3D can have a maximum of 18 icons (2 screens of 9 in a 3x3 matrix) in the Programs tab. Sometimes TF3D allows the creation of additional squares; however, these additional squares are essentially useless, since you cannot assign a program to them. What's worse, they cannot be deleted from the interface, leading to a Gremlins-like proliferation of empty squares on the Programs tab.
They can be removed through the registry, however, by deleting the additional entries and (most importantly) leaving the proper entries alone.
First, open your registry editor (I use PHM RegEdit, there are plenty of others). As always, BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY before making any changes!
Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Manila\ProgramLauncher\"
There are 18 proper keys, listed from 0 through 17. Any keys that do not belong will have numbers above 17. Delete all keys other than those numbered 0 through 17. Exit the registry editor. If you are on the Programs tab, navigate away from it, then back, and you will see that the rogue squares are gone. That's it.

thanks alot man! worked perfect

Messaging and device lock disappeared from todayscreen

I just noticed that the today items messaging and device lock disappeared from my today screen on my Atom. I would like to get them back. anybody know how? The don't show up in start>setting>today>items however, they are visible in the registery (and enabled) and visible with memmaid.
Please let me know if there is an other solution than to hrad reset my device.
Thanks in advance
there are limits of how many today items you can have
forgot how many
but the today item list is limited to 13
if you remove some in the reg the ones you are missing will show up
in today items
Hi Rul,
The other thing to check in your registry is the value of the Reg_DWord called "Order" for each of your plug-ins. Occassionally my plugins will play hide and seek if I've installed a new one and its default order number clashes with any of the other plugins. They do however still show up in the today settings. I'll post my reg settings so you can check yours are ok and then double chekc that the dll's for each are where they are supposed to be.
Good luck - Mallow1
Oops, forgot to mention that for me I have the Device Lock disabled anyway (so just ref to the other reg settings) as I have it in the sys tray instread to save Today Screen space, thanks to an excellent cab writen by armstrom http://buzzdev.net/component/option,com_simpleboard/Itemid,59/func,view/catid,27/id,17285/#17285 which uses the underlying Device Lock but via an exe which you can then assign to the sys tray using any of the tray launcher programs out there.
Regards - Mallow1
PS I swapped the icon out to be the same as Device Lock (armstrom's exe uses a different one if you happen to go down this route).
Thanks for you reply's.
With the messaging and device lock items I have 13 today items. (now 11 since these two don't show up anymore).
I have checked the Reg_DWord called "Order" and there are no clashes...
Any other solution?
Thanks for the device lock thingy in the sys tray, very useful.
What have you done differently since the last time you could see your missing items? Loaded anything else? Reflashed etc? It may help us track down what has gone wrong if Rudegar's suggestion didn't work and you have no clashes when you checked my suggestion.
Of all your 13 items do you run/ wish to run all of them or are some disabled (and unlikely to be used again). If some are redundnat, did you try Rudegar's suggestion of removing them from the registry?
On a side note, and without wishing to get side tracked or complicate your issue have you tried "MoreTodays" to see if that helps at all if all your 13 items are "must haves" but you are only seeing 11. It allows you to have multiple Today Screens each showing different plug ins. Depending upon how it works it may allow for >11 (or >=13) whatever the formal limit is, plugins to operate. See http://www.jgui.net/moretodays/index.html
Regards - Mallow1
Some of the today Items are disabled, in fact 5 of the 13. So I deleted a couple of them. Still not showing ion my todayscreen.
Well, as far as I know I have installed some programs, don't know exactly which I have installed, so that's not really helping.
I tried the program you've suggested and I can select messaging and device lock. But they still don't show up on my todayscreen.
I think I will have to learn to live with it, which is not that hard though, or I will have to hard reset my device.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
After you deleted some from your registry did you try a simple soft reset (rather than having to resort to the horror of a hard one)?
yep, did that after every change I've made. No results though.
Sounds basic but have you checked that the dll files concerned are still present. If they are present it may be that a path is wrong in the registry (try adding an explicit path/double checking path matches location), else we can resort to simply replacing them just in case they have been corrupted.
On that last point did you try the Device Lock exe I highlighted. If that works it means that the underlying device lock dll works too (as the exe uses it rather than emulates it) and it is therefore a Today Screen issue we are facing not a corrupted dll.
Now that you removed your unwanted dll refs from the registry, how many Today Items are there left there? I have at the back of my mind that there is also an upper limit to the number of resources WM can handle at any one time (think I recall this causing problems with Wisbar not being able to skin a few things simply because too much was already loaded and the required dll file scould therfore not be used).... but we can save broadening the issues until we've eliminated the simpler more direct ones.
Regards - Mallow1
PS FYI I have 9 Today items in my registry and 7 that are enabled. If you delete your unused 5 items out of 13 that would at least bring you down to within the same range loaded in my registry and we could eliminate the "number in registry" from the list of possible issues.
Ooh, another quick one to try (I use it when I have items checked in the Today settings that have failled to show in the Today Screen), is try running this little app which simply refreshesd the Today Screen. See if your missing items appear afterwards.

Hi, i love your today screen! Tidy but functional! Could you please tell me what apps/plugins etc you've got going on there?
Hi fuel925,
Thanks. There's something like 30-40 packages making up the entire screen and functionality. Rather than clutter this thread with an off topic reply I'll see what I can knock up and post in a separate thread to give you an insight and post a link here afterwards.

Hi. Mallow1
I've tried everything, nothing is working. I rest my case. Thanks for your help anyway.

Rul
Hi Rul,
Sorry to hear that. I've heard that theAtom has had a chequered start. Sounds like hard reset time (and I did hear somewhere that since so many of the early Atoms were having problems that an updated ROM had been relased quite quickly post launch). If yours was an early one you may find searching or checking for the updated ROm and reflashing helps (I want to say I think I saw this with respect to Aussie Atoms but can't swerar to it).
Anyway. Good luck - Mallow1
When I got my Atom I imediately put the "leaked" ROM on it. So it is not the case of an old ROM or something.
I just noticed that it is not showing the smartdailing plugin from the Treo 700w I just installed on it. So I guess there is something seriously wrong with the today plugins.

A GUI issue? (Driver - other?)

Hello All,
I accidentally came across the following behaviour on my HTC Cruise, and I found it quite interesting. Personally, I am quite happy with my HTC Cruise, despite the famous display driver missing...
Of course, I am upset like most people, since HTC seemed to be so keen in advertising the device's multimedia abilities. HTC have lost a couple of credibility points for me...
Anyway, on with the question now...
When I select Programs from the start menu and move my finger up and down on the scroll bar, the display seems to demonstrate quite a lag; icons are slow to redraw and the display seems to "flicker". I understand this is quite subjective, it depends on the number of programs one might have installed, etc.
However..... When I select Programs from the HTC Today plug in, (2nd icon on top row of third tab), the same action (moving up and down the scrollbar), is so much faster!
It's not a big deal, but the difference on my HTC is quite striking. How about yours? I am a software developer and find this quite interesting as it seems to be the same function, but performace seems to be different. Can it be a setting somewhere, can it be that HTC developers did not pay the attention they should? (and admitted the fact that extra performance can be achieved by stating they will provide a "patch" for it).
Do you get the same behaviour?
Thanks for reading
You are correct.
Even when removing the "big menu" option as advised on TC tweaking, program list accessed from home plugin tab scrolls much much faster than program list accessed from "Start" menu.
This is quite interesting
................
yes same for me! - very strange, why would this be?
Yep, same here. Verrrryy interrresting.
When I actually got this device and scrolled the icons in programs, I was immediately puzzled as it did not seem to be very promising. The settings window has a much smoother scroll (yes, I know, it has less icons as well)...
I am sure there must be a difference somehow from an implementation point of view, or at least a different setting somewhere. Maybe a different startup setting, or something.
I have read about the tweaks and the different settings you can change, for example Cache font size, etc.
However, the mere fact that the same functionality has such a dramatic difference depending on how you invoke it, to me is a case of not so efficient programming.
If HTC comes out with a new display "patch" which actually manages to make a difference, then it would be almost certain that their "first" version was not so efficient, a mere indication they could have done better straight from the beginning.
They are implemented differently too. If you open Programs from the Start Menu and close it then go to Settings -> Memory -> Running Programs you won't see anything. Now if you launch Programs from the HTC plugin and then close it and then go look at running programs you will see it running. (This is assuming you don't have the HTC Task Manager configured to close applications when hitting X). Must be implemented differently in the back end.
I agree there is a difference. Scrolling of icons f.e. under programs is much quicker, not sure are executebale files running quicker too?
That really weird! scrolling is really smooth, I have noticed the icon on my top right I have a .net configurator icon, when opening programs via the plug in the name under the icon is missing but opening programs normally the name under the icon is there realated some how?
It seems indeed a different program. I have WkTask installed and when I get the Programs appearing via the HTC, I can see that this actually starts a window (as hambola says).
When I select Programs via the Start menu, no window title appears.
Another difference is that when I start Programs via HTC home, I can see the scrollbar getting "smaller" as the icons seem to be added in that window "on the fly"; then the icons always appear "top-aligned". When I close that window and reopen it via HTC, it is the same.
On the other hand, when selecting Programs via the Start menu the icons are already there, plus the scrollbar remembers its last position after the window has closed.
There are small differences really, it is just interesting how these affect the quality of scrolling...
is this in anyway linked to the driver issues?
Not sure, sometimes I'm not even sure what things are linked to driver issues and what things aren't. For example I used to have an 8525 which is apparently not affected by this driver issue. But rotating the display on that device was no faster than what I get with my TC. In fact maybe it was even slower, I don't have it with me to compare. So I don't know if drivers will even fix something like that. Maybe it will, maybe it won't.
What about the dialer skin coming up on the TC. That's really slow. I see the different sections being painted on the screen. The Comm Manager will only load up fast if it's not in the "Running Programs". So first time I run it, it loads up in one shot, if i close it and try opening it again I will see it paint the different blocks. If I actually stop it in Running Programs and then try it again, then it loads in one shot. Driver issues? Who the hell knows. I doubt it though.
If driver issues fix video playback and they also fix the camera lag, i'll be content. if overall smoothness is fixed and extensive graphics (like games) is fixed, then i'll be happy.
I agree with hambola. I am not sure it's a driver issue. To me it simply shows that it could have been done better.
An even more annoying issue is the dialler skin as habola also suggests. The camera thing is also important.
To me the video playback is not much of an issue; I always encode in QVGA mode without any problem or quality loss. Quality loss is relative, I think it looks fine on the phone, obviously it's not a good idea to play that QVGA video on my PC. An additional advantage when encoding QVGA is saving space. My files in QVGA are usually less than 400MB, whereas my full screen versions are usually less than 1GB. To be honest, I do not see the use of it. Last time I was waiting in an airport, I had around 10 movies in my phone, all perfectly watchable (with perfectly watchable subtitles), a couple of GBs of music and I had additional free space in my storage card. Noway, I could fit 10 movies on it, if the quality was DVD-like. So basically, I do not mind... I think Coreplayer copes ok.
The little things such as lag in scrolling, the dialler skin coming up in pieces in a device that is a PHONE, the camera; these things annoy me.
-And how do you make phone calls, if there is no keyboard?
-Well, you press this button and the dialpad comes up...
-Ah! I see it takes some time to draw that dialpad...
-yes.......
See my point?
quickly thinking about this, it sounds like the HTC plugin is launching it in it's own shell, therefore it isn't monitoring everything else that is going on if it were launched from the main program list, ie. when launched from program list, the priority of running tasks is set to all, whilst from HTC, the program becomes the main focus. Maybe to do with threading, HTC was compiled with hyper threading, and the normal today screen wasn't. This is a very loose and fast analogy by me so feel free to shoot it down!!
also, you have to consider what memory is being freed up by which launcher, for what app etc. etc. etc. Memory plays a big part in performance, if there isn't enough of it, then the CPU has to start working shifting sh#t around, lots of cycles wasted etc. Gotta remember this is a M$ OS, they aint the brightest sparks sometimes
This same thing happens on my Athena after I launch the programs folder a second time (using standard start menu). This is most likely caused by the bitmap icons being loaded in the device's cache. Wouldn't get my hopes up.

A Few Noob Questions

Hello,
I am a new AT&T Fuze owner and new in general to Windows Mobile "Professional". (Had a Symbian 60 Device Previously) I have been doing extensive reading and researching to figure out how to accomplish my goals but I keep running into dead ends. I have been searching forums and Google but I find that most information is formatted for people that have been in the community for a long time and understand all of the jargon. There seems to be so many flavors of windows and platforms that it makes my head spin and I also find that words like Smartphone, Pocket PC, Window CE, etc.. are thrown around very loosely.
Sorry for the preamble. Here is what I know so far.
Device = AT&T Fuze
CE OS 5.2.19971 (Build 19971.1.2.6)
CID = HTC_P4600 (Not listed in the WIKI here)
ROM = 1.95.502..5 WWE (10/20/08)
Radio = 1.02.25.32
Protocol = 52.39c.25.22h
First I was wondering if there was a positive way of knowing if a certain piece of software will work with my device and what that spec would be. Like does it go by windows version, phone version, both? Or at least some general rules of thumb what to take note of before trying a piece of software. (If it was designed for or works on other flavors of Raphael is it safe to try?)
My biggest problem at the moment is I can't seem to install anything anymore. I am getting a message about unsigned cabs or files missing. I'm hoping this wasn't something I did but it's a possibility. Some software "PPCPimBackup.exe" will still install but most won't like "Advanced_Configuration_Tool_v3.3.cab". I even tried to make a simple .cab using CeRegEditor to adjust the city string for the weather tab in TF3D. Any help here would be most appreciated. I am very weary of all these so called "unlockers" out there and even read a thread here where someone bricked their device by installing the wrong software for the device.
Is the Fuze the same as the Diamond? (They look identical)
What is the preferred way to back up the entire device or is it even possible with standard software? Most of what I found backs up PIM info.
When a program (Taskmanager 3.1) says to minimize, where does it go? How do you bring it back to the foreground or do you have to install a taskbar manager?
I actually have more I want to ask but that probably wouldn't be prudent. I think if I could help myself better once I understand what software I can and can't use with my phone.
Many thanks in advance and apologize for noobing up your forum =P

I'll try to answer some of your questions.
1) Normally, software will say windows mobile 5 or 6 as a requirement along with maybe .Net Framework. If it's for Windows Mobile most likely it'll work. Just have to try it and see.
2) Your programs are probably not installing because you may not have the required .Net Framework. I know Advance Config requires .Net Framework 3.5. So if you don't have it, install it. You can find it here or from Microsoft's website. You need the Windows CE or Compact version.
3) The Fuze is similar to the Diamond but don't go trying to install ROMs that are made for the Diamond. Use the ones in the Raphael forums.
4) If you want to backup your entire device, use a program such as Sprite Backup. This will make a full backup of entire system excluding ROM. However, if you want to do a restore, you need to make sure you have the same ROM installed, if not, it will create a lot of problems.
5) With TaskManager, when you minimize it just continues to run in the background. Program is still loaded and taking up memory/etc. Similar to when you minimize something in Windows. To bring it back, you can view the TaskManager and restore to foreground.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Wow,
Thanks you for the quick and non condescending reply. I've been surfing more since I posted and hopefully I could get you to elaborate on a few things.

I did the .Net install and it went without a hitch but still no joy. I noticed on the authors support forums that others are having the same problem but no clear solution has been posted. /Sigh
I was thinking I needed to follow a procedure similar to the one listed here where you have to install a certificate and make some policy changes in the registry but since I can't find any info specifically for the Fuze I haven't done anything yet other than download the certificate that was linked in that post.
I should mention I am not a complete computer illiterate, and am fully comfortable with the registry and even more advanced techniques if necessary. I should also mention that I don't plan on replacing my rom at all. Just want to keep it to basic reg hacks, software installs, and some theming once I get things working the way I want.
I did already change one registry policy key (0000101a) to "1" from a thread I found on these forums, as it is something easily changed back but of course it did not help.

I understand what you said but what I was trying to figure out is how to recall it from the background. It doesn't show up in the TF3D task list when it's minimized so I was wondering if you had to click on the task bar or do some certain trick to bring it to the fore-front. The ability to move between programs easily is my biggest gripe so far as I seem to have to open and close the keyboard, hit home or back a lot to move around. I would love the ability to hit some hot key or some secret spot on the screen to launch taskmanager and then I could use it to go to whatever program I wanted.
I have seen a few bugs in TM_3.1 that cause crashes, but it is an awesome program and hopefully the developer will keep working out the bugs. If there is another program you would recommend that accomplished the same type of functionality I'd be interested in trying it out.
Thanks again for your friendly help.

Just looked at the contents of that cab referenced from that link I posted. It is just a Setup.xml file with the following contents.
<wap-provisioningdoc>
<characteristic type="SecurityPolicy">
<parm name="4119" value="144"/>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>
Any thoughts?
As for .Net, the following is from Modaco, and I found that it worked like a charm:
How to install and use .NET Compact Framework 3.5
If you're a developer or have knowledge of .net Compact Framework, you'll be aware that version 3.5 has shipped. You'll be aware that it offers a number of enhancements in features, stability and performance, and you'll likely also know that it provides full backwards compatability with previous versions of the Compact Framework. What you may NOT know is that when CF 3.5 is installed on a device, applications that target previous versions of the Compact Framework will continue to run against the old versions, and 3.5 and previous versions will live side by side on the device. Only when new devices come along will we see ONLY 3.5 on a device.
This presents a number of problems, namely
• Users who deploy CF 3.5 to their device but use applications targeting older versions will not benefit from the 3.5 performance improvements
• Developers who develop apps for pre CF 3.5 frameworks cannot easily test their applications ready for when 3.5 only devices come along
Thankfully, help is at hand in the form of a little known Compact Framework 3.5 powertoy named '.Net Configuration'. The application, which is available at Microsoft, provides the user with full granularity of control over the .net CF on their device. You can see installed versions, change the used CF version for a particular application or change the used CF version for all applications run on your device! Perfect!
Sadly in Microsoft's infinite wisdom the application in question is tucked away in simple EXE inside the 6.2MB download and somewhat hard to find, so i've taken the liberty of packaging it up into a CAB here that installs it with it's own Start Menu shortcut.
- Run '.Net Configuration' from your Start Menu
- Navigate to the 'Device Policy' tab and select version 3.5
- Select 'Apply' then 'OK'
That's it, you're done!
Thanks kindly but I'm guessing now that myself or a piece of software I've installed has borked my ability to install software. It seems I can install exe files but no cabs, including the one you posted will install.
As I've stated I have not made any attempts to unlock anything yet but have installed some software and made some registry tweaks. I wish I could see what exactly is happening like Procmon does for windows to pinpoint the problem, but I might just have to resort to a hard reset if I can't figure it out.
I'm open to any ideas but if I don't figure it out tonight I guess I'll reset tomorrow. Thanks for the guidance and help.
Cheers,
Eidolen

You might want to double-check that registry hack to make sure it's correct. Seems like a big coincidence that the one registry hack you've made so far is to allow unsigned cabs to install and the biggest problem you seem to be having is that you can't get unsigned cabs to install....

Yeah I gave that a shot but no joy. That wasn't the only reg hack I did but the only relating to "Unlocking". I haven't touched anything I wasn't pretty sure about. For instance I have looked at all the tweaks for speeding up the TF3D using cache setting but the numbers don't match so I never tried it. If I didn't understand what the tweak was I stayed away.
I did the PTT button tweak for voice/camera and played around with the cities for the weather app. Other than that I can't think of anything else I touched in the registry but I did a lot of looking.
On the other hand I have installed a good bit of software to try out. I have also rearranged my menu items by deleting shortcuts in the start menu folder. Even though I've done a good bit to the phone I think it might be best to start from scratch with a hard reset and start again with the knowledge I've gained in the past few days. My Opera browser has been getting a real workout with 40+ tabs going =P
I did find another thread here that has someone with a similar problem but the way it happened was entirely different. His fix was to wipe the phone and use the same software I was trying to install when I found this problem.

I took ecltech's advice and got Sprite Backup and made a backup already. I would rather fix the problem but it sounds like it might be difficult tracking it down so I'm prepared to start again. What would be great is finding some guide or general direction in what programs and or tweaks I should install and in what order and any other pertinent information regarding starting from scratch. "The Must Have" utilities and programs.
I can't believe how helpful everyone's been so far considering this is a developers board. I figured it was worth the risk to get chewed in the hopes of getting the best advice. With all the info surfing I've been doing it's clear that this is the site where it all happens.
Cheers and thanks again,

OMG!
I'm almost too afraid to admit it but at least I feel good that I figured it out on my own. I was smart enough to make a backup of the registry with CeRedEditor before doing anything major and remembered it had a compare feature. After loading it up It immediately occurred to me to look at HKCR\cabfile and that's where I found my answer.
I had downloaded a little free utility from SKTools called Cabinstaller that allows you to choose where programs get installed. Somehow the registry entry it made didn't correctly point to the executable. In any case I think I installed it late the other night and forgot about it because the exe files I installed after that installed fine. I should have tested it immediately and I wouldn't have had this problem. /sigh
Thank you everyone for the help and ideas and even though I've fixed this problem I still might do a full reset and start from scratch now that I got all mentally prepared to do it and start over feeling a little more confident in what I'm doing.
While it's on my mind right now and since I never got a solution for the question in my first post, is there a hack or small little program that will allow you to put a shortcut in either the top bar where the start menu is or in the bottom where the shortcut for the on screen keyboard is so I can invoke the Task Manager easily to help with navigating? I wouldn't even be opposed to a shortcut in the TF3D pop-up you get when clicking on the top right bar. It would be great if this could be done with a bloated program but not opposed to it if the program is useful.
Thanks again everyone. I guess I'll start a new post for any new questions. (I have lots but will try and figure out as much as I can by myself first.)
Cheers,
Eidolen

I think you're probably right about starting again from scratch. It would probably be less work than tracking down what's causing your problem and then you'll be starting with a cleaner slate for installing everything going forward.
There are a few different threads on here about what constitutes "must have" apps for the Fuze and the one thing I can say is that no two people agree on the list! Your best bet is to seach out those threads and see which ones you think would be most useful to you. A great place to get started is at http://www.blownfuze.org using username and password 'xda' (without the quotes)
My suggestions for the generic must haves are:
Total Commander
PHM Registry Editor (or whichever reg editor you prefer)
Diamond Tweak
Diamond TF3D Config
Other basic programs that might be worth checking out depending on what you do on your fuze are:
PocketShield or S2U2 for locking the phone
TCPMP Core Media Player
TorchButton for using the LED flash as a flashlight
BeyondPod or pRSS Reader for RSS feeds and podcasts
GoogleMaps and/or Live Search
Good luck!
Sprite backup is included in your Fuze as original software. I always keep a full backup copy on my Sd card of a good clean WM 6.1 install with all the must have tweaks done already. You will find it saves alot of headaches when you mess something up trying things out. After that I do a weekly backup as I add more and more stuff over time.
does diamond TF3D Config or diamond tweak work with this ROM version?
Thanks yzf750, I am preparing to do just that. I am getting prepared for a hard reset now once I notate what I want to keep that's on my phone already. Hopefully I can get it set up by the time my SD card arrives this coming week and can do the backup to it for keeps.
I read a blog post about doing a soft reset after a hard reset to prevent the ATT software from installing and I think I really want to try that. I just need to make sure I install the stuff I want to keep like TF3D manually afterwards. I'm hoping to find a more detailed guide for the procedure than what was posted though.
I'll post back and report if the smoke genie escapes or not.

some n00b guidance
Ok so i have been looking at these forums for a few days now doing homework before i even get the phone(its ordered). So my questions are
1. if i have AT&T unlock the phone(i know someone who works there so i hope they can help out) do i still need to do the hardspl to change radios etc?
2. Whats really the difference between all these roms built by users and just using BuildOS(im assuming this works on GSM phones and not just CDMA because its from PPC) to build your own ROM? and do most of these tweeks come prebuilt into these roms or do u still need to to other stuff? i.e reg tweaks etc, like i think it would be better for me to just build a rom with BuildOS with the apps i want etc and not keep flashing all the time
3. Is GPS still a problem for people?, i think ill just use tomtom or garmin and hope for the best as its not a huge concern. After looking around i guess its just a matter of finding the radio that works best for the individual, so anyone in the .US new england area have any recommendations of the best radio in the northeast like NYC area?
4. whats a good order to do this stuff?, i plan on using the phone for a couple days or so as stock just to get the general feel of the OS in general. then prolly flash the ROM with a custom BuildOS ROM(unless someone can provide the difference between BuildOS and say PROven ROM), then do w.e else needs to be done. ive seen the recommeded tweaks, just not sure if they still need to be done with a flashed ROM. not really looking for a game phone more office apps like RDP and irc etc, sys admin tools
Basically i think theres just a ton of info on here which is a good thing but im just getting started on Winmo although flashing etc dosent intimidate me so im eager to get started just a little unclear on some things and cant seem to find the answer just surfing, so any help or links to some stuff i might have missed is appreciated. Pretty much just want a smooth runnin ROM thats not stock of course, decent gps reception and the apps i want. thanks all
Look here, I made a little write-up for the basics using a stock ATT ROM. I ran this routine actually twice on my phone (ROM flashing junkie) so it should be fairly complete.
I have to note that, in most cases at least, I know what I do and can "recover" from a ROM flash within ~ 30 minutes, having all software, tweaks and contacts restored.
Regarding ROMs
That's an open can of worms with two next to it waiting. Read the threads and read the problems and decide later if you want to flash or not. If you are not used to WinMo phones it's perhaps better to hold back a week or two.
Some ROMs are built from original Raphael builts others are based on WinMo 6.1 but contain partially applications and tweaks from other HTC devices. The latest build # need not to be the best. For example RRE's ROM is based on the original ATT ROM and he created a really nice good performing ROM while other Chefs rip out first all guts and basics of a ROM (making it "naked") adding features and programs later. That's a more or less political discussion what's better and what's not and you have to decide yourself based on what you read and/or experience. For MY part I know Monx/HT from the Tilt times and always appreciated his work and speedy ROMs and he continued the same line on the Raphael/Fuze though it took him some time to come where he is right now.
As said all political in that regards, almost all ROMs out there ARE GOOD and have advantages in the one or the other area.
Tweaks
Yes the tweaks work even for a stock ATT ROM with ATT's TouchFlo/Manila (though I think it's plain ugly).
GPS
Again a difficult subject. For example the stock GPS (enabled or disabled assisted GPS settings) works kinda well with google maps BUT doesn't perform as expected with 3rd party GPS apps (TomTom, iGO). Keep in mind a lot came from other devices and for example iGO on the Tilt rocked down to the street number with no lag at all where the Fuze is doing more "guesstimating" than performing (compared to the Tilt).
Backup
Do a PIM backup once or twice a week and do a FULL backup once a week or if you installed new software after you confirm that you like it. If you wreck your phone for whatever reason AND you stay with the SAME ROM a full restore will work.
Just Wow!
That's an impressive piece of work there. I haven't stopped reading or poking around while I'm waiting for my SD card to get here and had quite some experience today. I did read the thread regarding doing a "Non-Bloat" Install and actually started to do it but stopped when I realized there still seems to be some residual bugs to the process. I figured for now even with the little bit of confidence I've gained I'd wait on that a little longer.

I forgot to check the memory and storage readings sadly but I figured this list could be checked against the full bloat version to see what processes and services could be killed. I figured I'd play with a full working install so if anything didn't work I would know it was from myself or software I installed instead of guessing if it was a side effect of the no bloat process. Also I could learn what the bloat was and strip it away.
Once I decided on Bloat I started a Log/Diary of everything I did for my own reference and thought it might be useful for troubleshooting later. Everything was going smooth until I decided to take on the behemoth named RealVGA.
Luckily I made a full Sprite backup previous to playing with it and am reinstalling that backup as I write this.
If there is one piece of advice I could give from the little knowledge I've gained so far is that most of the upper-end hacks/tweaks software that is available are living breathing complex entities and are not to be taken lightly. Each one needs to be thoroughly researched and understood before using unless you have an older device that has been supported for a long time. I find very little information on using most software regarding the Fuze even though it is very similar to other devices. Truth is, it is not identical which can make things hairy at times. Anyway the more you fail, the more you learn.
For other Fuze owners out there I'll post my personal log so you have an idea what programs I had trouble with and what I tried to do to resolve them. For sure I had huge problems with RealVGA as well as PocketCM and PocketCm Keyboard. It's a shame too as they all are outstanding upgrades.
Well I think I'll be ready for your tutorial when my card gets here so I will be sure to report back to let you know how it went. I already learned a lot just from reading it. For one I didn't know you could do anything over usb if you cancelled the ActiveSync. I just used that trick while restoring my phone and still haven't done a sync. I'm sure that guide will be a huge help to many like myself.
Huge Thanks!

RealVGA is nice but not sure it's worth this effort. Just too many problems.
Noticed graphics in TF3D are much slower and laggy now as well.
"All Settings" still borked Not sure what else to try at this point.
Good info on this subject is hard to come by. Most ppl seem to have good luck with this app.
Went to re-tick the skin option in RealVGA but it was still ticked. hmmm
What I think is needed is an app that could swap resolutions on the fly with a hotkey. ( Prolly not technically possible)
At least you could have normal usage and only use for certain apps that really benefit from it.
After another reboot the "Disable phone skin" is checked again. Guess it can't be unticked.
Un-ticked "No enlarge title Bar" in Diamond TF3D Config
I am able to open the "Programs" link from the start menu, wonder why settings is screwed.
Tried settings again, no joy, was able to use home key though this time. Not locked up.
Start menu does not work now though. Yikes, had to use reset this time.
Throws arms in the air!
Hard Reset =(
You are funny eidolen.
If you want copy the files I provided to your device (since you don't have a DS yet) and play with it.
You'll hard reset anyway when the SD arrives - LOL
Your also going to find at some point that the more and more tweaks and modifications you make, more problems will start sufacing. I was a rom flashing junkie like many on this forum for 2 years. Since I replaced my prior phone with the Fuze I am running just the stock rom without bloatware and a FEW select tweaks (includes radio change). It runs fast, works good and I dont have to soft reset it all the time.
Take a look at every custom rom, Im not putting any of them down, but after time the threads on them become 100 plus pages long, the number of other fixes to get them running right become impossible to keep track of. It becomes a daily job of just trying to keep that rom working without breaking some other feature or getting it to work right. They put out weekly fixes on most custom roms. They start out with the right intention, but it soon becomes just a bloated non oem rom after time.
Its addicting and fun, but at some point a person just wants to use the phone instead of hard resetting it all the time, flashing roms nightly and trying to figure out how to fix stuff in each rom.
I reached that point now and my fuze is outstanding without having to spend days tinkering with it. It is snappy, reponsive and ALL the software I have installed on it works, and the GPS works flawlessly even inside my house.
But again, your "hands on" approch as your doing now, is probaly the best way to learn
teh bestest
between these last few posts and my little chat with our neighbors PPC on there irc channel i am pretty confident i know what the deal is now, you guys have been a great help, i think im going to play a bit with some roms of course but eventually land on a bloat free standard rom with some added apps like putty and irc etc for sysadmin work, on that note yzf750 could u tell me exactally what u have running on yours sounds like its what im looking for.

ATT Fuze NEWBs only - Little setup guide (Touch up 02/10/09)

Touched up some stuff that you don't have to click around through the whole thread. All LINKS are now in a separate post (#349) found here.
Edit 02/16/09 - Performance tweaks
How to make a stock Fuze ATT nice unbloated and performing reasonably well?
Lately several NEWB threads popped up and got answered individually which is very hard to track.
I thought I make a small write up what can be done with the stock ATT ROM without unlocking the phone and still have a decent device. Assumptions are that you don’t want/need the “goodies” supplied by ATT (called bloatware) and that you are willing to do some customization yourself. This is not in any disrespect to any ROM developer but I think some NEWBs are simply scared to tinker from day one with their device as in unlocking (SIM/Security unlock) and flashing several ROMs without really knowing what they are doing. They’ll do this later as soon as they are accustomed to their new shiny black fingerprint magnet.
NEWBs don’t forget that a lot of people here in the XDA community have a fairly good experience with HTC phones and come to the Raphael/Fuze through numerous other HTC devices (Tilt/Trinity etc. etc.) and know most of not all quirks and risks involved with flashing and hacking.
What you need:
PC with active sync working (I’m not a MAC guy so some may chime in)
SD card (highly suggested)
Basic understanding what a soft- and hard reset is
Quiet time (put kids, girlfriends, wives away for an hour or two) a good espresso, coke or coffee.
Installing stock ATT ROM without bloatware:
If you power on your device the first time you will be asked to align the screen, play with cut and paste, set a password. AFTER this step a large window will appear that the device will customize in a few seconds. At THAT MOMENT soft reset with the stylus in the reset hole. This will NOT install all ATT bloatware and will NOT install ATT’s version of TouchFlo3D (aka Manila). I bet that you will fail the first time, so look at the little ATT flyer where HARD RESET is explained and simply do it again. Hard reset will wipe out all you personal data. Not a big deal right now since you have none.
If you were successful you will have a green screen with some information on it.
Preparation:
<Settings – Personal – Menus> Take everything OUT beside the “File Explorer”
<Settings – Personal - Today – Items> take ALL checkmarks out, NOTHING should be checked.
Switch your phone off and back on, your start menu should be empty and showing “Today/File Explorer/Programs/Settings” that’s all you need right now!
Download the file in the provided link at the end and unzip to your PC.
Connect to a PC using active sync (you actually need not to sync, just to connect so say “cancel” and do not establish a partnership).
In active sync go to explore “MyWindows-MobileBasedDevice”, double click and double click on “Storage Card”. Create a new folder (File - New – Folder).
I call mine “@ESSENTIALS” that it appears right in top regardless what will be installed later. Copy all files to your storage card under the newly created folder.
My package includes an OEM Manila and all basic tools to setup your device. Credit goes to all original creators (too many to list).
Installation:
Open the File Explorer on your device and go to Storage Card “@essentials” /ManilaOEM tab on Manila animation and install ON DEVICE not storage card!
The phone will say it’s an untrusted application confirm with YES (we’ll take care of this later).
Phone will request a reboot, if not, reboot manually (power off/on).
After reboot you will have a basic Manila, do NOT play with it yet!
Open File Explorer on your device and go to the NetCF folder on the storage card and install NETCFv35.wm.armv4i on the device.
Go to the Config folder and install ALL applications which are listed there (Advanced_Configuration_Tool_v3.3/Diamond TF3D Config Setup v0.6.7/Diamond Tweak 0.5.3_English).
Power off/on you phone
Go to Programs and Advanced Config Tool (acknowledge the warning and check the box that it doesn’t appear in the future).
Perform the following changes:
User interface – Nothing
Today – Nothing
Performances – File system cache enabled / Cache size 2MB / Filter cache 4096 / Glyph cache 32 KB
Power Management – Nothing
Screen – Nothing
Input – Keyboard backlight timeout 30 seconds
Network – Nothing
Phone – Show Band page YES
Bluetooth – Nothing
GPS – Assisted GPS disabled (if you are NOT using ATT’s costly GPS service)
Log file – Leave untouched for now
Data Connections – HSDPA icon enabled / HSUPA support enabled
Internet Explorer – Proxy Auto Detection enabled
Messaging – Nothing
Calendar – Nothing
Camera – Save location DCIM
Locations – Change all DEFAULT STORAGE entries to \Storage Card\My Documents\ and then the folder name (pictures etc.)
Don’t touch other entries and go straight to
Light Sensor – Polling disabled
Miscellaneous – Security warning disabled
Confirm with DONE and reboot phone
After reboot go to the Storage Card folder “Tools” and install in the numbered order 07_FExploreEXT_2_03 / 08_G - DK 4.3 Add 3G to Comm Manager should force a phone reboot, if not reboot after EACH one. After the boot go again to the tools folder and install 09_SASHIMI7.5 which will ask you some questions after install, just follow the instructions no harm will be done. Do some forum reading for what it is for. It will take some ROM flashing, Hard Reset fear away. Last but not least install 10_Data_Backup v3.1 (which is HTC Backup).
That’s the basic setup and you’ll have a good and reasonably fast running ATT Fuze.
If you want you can install Skyfire browser (on storage card) and the latest Opera Browser (on device overwriting what was provided with the Manila Package) and the latest google maps (on the storage card) which are in the corresponding folders in my package.

A last word regarding backup:
Do frequently backups!!
If you plan to flash ROMs, backup ONLY the PIM database because a restore of a full backup will ruin your newly installed ROM!!!
If you stick with the same ROM a full backup will work .
A PIM backup contains by default all contacts and emails.
Have tons of fun with your new toy!!

TouchFlo3D aka Manila 3D has some default colors, so does ATT's version of Manila (I guess orange highlights). These are hard coded into the reg.
To change you have to edit the registry (regedit in the essentials).
Please read here

To change upper and lower bars / softkey background I made a little appearance pack which you can download (screenshots are included).
I also included RCMod 2.1 from o3blig here in the forum if you really don't like any of the TSKs and Glossy Black Bars.exe for .. guess what GLOSSY BLACK BARS

To change the basic clock you need to overwrite six files in the Windows directory using Total Commander provided with the first pack.
I suggest to copy the original files FIRST somewhere else in case you don't like the clock!!![/B]

Well-written and very informative yet more concise and effective than the Wiki if you ask me, at least for the audience you're targeting. That's sticky material in my book (but not in my bookmarks ).
I linked your post on the top of my site which is more of a next step for the noobs once they make their way through your instructions. Feel free to reciprocate.

Very good job, I can see you spent some time on that.

I did this when I first got my Fuze and it installed all the bloatware anyway after the soft reset but ran worse than with the bloat.
I don't mean to say this method doesn't work, just a word of warning that it's not 100% foolproof either. You might have to do it a few times to get the timing right for it to work; I just went with a cooked ROM in the end.
Hey thanks for the comments and - yes - I ran more than once through this routine (this happens when you catch a BAD cold and have nothing to do at home ...).

Great guide! Exactly what I was looking for. I do have one issue: I already got past the first time powering on and setup, so all the ATT bloatware was installed. Any cures for this scenario?

a hard reset can be performed by Start>settings>system>clear storage>1234>ok.
this will allow you to start the process over
Thanks, fuzewoes, I'll try that.
Dude I've had my FUZE for about 3 weeks and have it all setup nicely but Im gonna save a backup an hard reset and try this, just sounds to great to pass up, does the manilla you have us install look like that black one or does it look like the gray style that comes with att stock? Does it let you set backgrounds to all tabs?
Thanks man!
Hard reset - 1234
Remember even after this hard reset you have to time the stylus soft reset otherwise all ATT software include ATT Manila WILL be installed!
Hint:
Do a PIM Backup of your personal data and emails first using the HTC backup in the RAR file and store it on the SD card.
Clock
Yes, both provided Manila versions come with the HTC known "flip clock" (black numbers white background). If you like another clock please follow what's written in the Raphael and Diamond Theme threads.
If you like the clock in the screenshot install the attached CAB (thanks and high-fives go to JStarLuvsTina!)
Background all tabs
I don't recall 1000% if the wallpaper will change for all tabs since I went back to my preferred ROM after running this install but, if not, the solution
is in the attached CAB mUn BackGround4AllPages v.02.cab or read
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=432951&highlight=background+tabs
Zoom
Hmmm, actually this should work out of the box. Did you check in Diamond Tweaks "19.Touch-sensitive Wheel". If this doesn't solve the problem let me know.
does it install sprite backup? i was planning on making a full backup of my current system and if case i didnt like it this way i would just restore my backup
Fuze Set Up Question:
Can you please tell me how to me typing "i" automatically change to "I"
I have tried everything and just can't seem to be able to figure out how to ADD auto correct words.
Another I would like is the days of the week or months. I want to program into my fuze that if I type "monday" it automatically corrects and shows "Monday" (and the same with the rest of the days and months.
How can I set up auto correct words so when I am typing with the keyboard these changes will be automatically made.
Thanks.

how do you get the top and low bar to become black, i currently have it green
@TVDinner
I'd say "wrong thread" please ask this questions somewhere else.
@peste19
AFAIK Sprite comes with the stock ROM regardless if you "Manila" it or not.
To change the colors you need a different TSK file.
If you want to freely change the upper and lower bar look for RCMod.
I guess you are looking for the Original HTC Black / Green.
Attached are some of my favs, unzip, copy into the windows dir and select under "Settings-Today"
ZIP content:
Diamond.tsk
HTC Black.tsk
myBlue_Void.tsk
Blue Hue.tsk
WM Azrieli.tsk
WM 6.1 Black.tsk
WM 6.1 Blue.tsk
thanks tyguy by the way great post

Change theme to HTC Black.
If that does not exist it would be a tsk file you can search for.
Has anyone tried the weather database editor with this method? It doesnt work for me, when i open the editor it doesnt show the countries, just a blank white screen
Great Guide a lot of time spent and good work.
It would appear that AT$T has thrown us a slight curve in the bloatware dept.
When setting up the phone after a hard reset, go through the screen alignment window and the practice moving files window. But then right when the screen turns to the WM 6.! desktop, do the soft reset, If you wait till the customizations in three seconds screen appears, it is too late and you will have to do it again.
It appears that AT$T figured too many people knew how to hide the bloatware, so they changed it up slightly so you would have to load the bloatware at least the first time.

Is there any xap that changes the default number of multitasking item?

I would like to be able to adjust how many items are open at time.
I assume you mean in the fast task switcher view... and so far as I know, nobody has found a way to change that. However, I believe you will find that if you back out of a few of those items, others that were pushed off the end may appear (for example, if you had 6 tabs open in IE and also an app or two, that's more than can be shown in the switcher, but if you use Back to leave some of those items the ones you couldn't see before should re-appear in the switcher).
It's not actually multitasking, BTW. Those other apps are suspended, not doing anything at all (i.e. not "tasking"). Similarly, there are a large number of tasks that are actually running on the phone but which don't show up in that list; background services that wait for incoming calls/SMS, the service that checks email in the background, etc. Currently though, we can't write background stuff like that and have it work on stock ROMs.
