Landscape Performance << Portrait Performance? - Touch Pro, Fuze General

I just thought i'd squeak the wheels a little bit with me noticing some screen tearing in landscape mode in ANY application that allows for quick panning.
So far ive seen this in opera mobile (as stated by an older thread) and opera mini java (just grab the screen and go up and down as fast as you can and youll see it in the upper right). ALSO, in s2u2, when set to raw buffer, moving the slider in landscape is a lot less smooth compared to moving it around in portrait.
Applications seem to perform sporadically in landscape for some reason... whats the reason? They should have access to the same drivers so whats the problem?

Hi, there is one topic with the same subject. Check it out:

It's really bad in TomTom when in landscape, the redraw is achingly slow.

Scrolling Gestures Inverted

I tried searching on the topic but couldn't find what I was looking for. For some reason when I am in PIE, SMS, or any application that doesn't fit in the window and I need to scroll, the bar on the far right works fine, but if I use my finger to scroll in the screen it is inverted. If I move it up it goes down, if I go down it goes up. I looked through the TouchFlo options, Cube options, and all the settings and couldn't find anything addressing this. I am using Dutty's WM6.1 Beta.
finger moving up = the page moving up ( to read further down the page ) = scrollbar moving down !!!
what am I missing here ???
isn't that how it work ???
Thats the way touchflo works... Flicker up and it will go down and flicker down and it will go up.
Am I the only one who feels that this is pointless? I don't understand the advantage to the page going down if you flick your finger up and going up if you flick your finger down.
The effect of touchflo is intended to be as if you are "dragging" the page across. Or are you saying that it scrolls down when you flick up and vice versa?
think of it as moving in the direction that you flick it not the direction the scrollbar would take you.

anyone using Opera mini?

I'm a big user of Opera mini; given the lack of buttons on the Raphael, I'm concerned it is not well-suited for one-handed use. I'm currently using a Treo 700wx and use the exposed keyboard's numeric keys to scroll (2/4/6/8) and #5 to zoom in and out. The whole navigation is extremely fast and smooth. What is the experience like on the Raphael?
Why not just use opera mobile (it's preinstalled)?
smooth zoom, using the touch wheel.
scroll with thumb on screen, or press direction arrows on touch wheel.

and you can rotate the screen with the accelerometer, no need to pull out the keyboard!

Opera mini works perfectly on raphael.
Some webs are very heavy and are surfed much quickly with opera mini.....
What if you're laying in bed on your side reading the phone? Can you turn off the automatic flip thing, because in that position it would always be wrong
I tend to use opera mini when i'm out and about as it uses data compression, hence reducing loading times and the amount of data downloaded. However, i have found that even with the text size set to maximum, the font is still very small and soemtimes difficult to read. It can also be difficult to select items unless you use the stylus.
does the scroll wheel to zoom work in opera mini? otherwise i think it will be impossible to surf one handed due to the lack of buttons.

no it does not.
do the "Back" and "Home" hard-keys perform any function within Opera mini?

Nope... the "home" and "back" buttons are not intercepted by Opera Mini so they both bring you back to the TF3D home screen.

There is a version of opera mini 4.2b that supports vga screens and large fonts. From your phone use opera mobile and go to http://mini.opera.com/beta/ Then click the link that says "If this version fails..." and download the first version with multiple certificates.

Thanks for the link.
I installed that version on my Fuze and it works very well except for the fact that I cannot zoom in or out. I can pan around the zoomed out page using the 2, 4, 6 & 8 keys (on the hardware keyboard), but pressing the 5 key only activates the mouse pointer.
Is anyone else having trouble zooming?
In Portrait mode, I use the capacitive scroll sensor (circle around the joystick) to scroll. I had to add "Java" as a running app in Advanced Config 3.3 SmartTouch settings to do this. In portrait, hitting the Back button does not scroll back (minimizes the app), so you have to use your finger to hit the back/right soft key on the screen. In Settings, make the font the largest helps to make this bigger.
Opera Mini 4.2 works better in landscape on this device. You can use the arrow keys to move around on the keyboard. You can use the Del//<-- key to go back. You can also use Function Lock (double press Fn) to lock in the numerica keys for scrolling around, though 5 does not do anything for me.
Thanks for your help.
I've never used Opera Mini before and I think maybe I just wasn't using it properly. I didn't have "overview mode" enabled in the settings, and I believe that must be enabled for zooming to function.
I also configured Java to use Smarttouch, which is allowing me to scroll a box around the screen which will zoom to that portion of the screen when I click the center button. Thanks for the tip.
I can't get the zoom feature to work at all in landscape mode though. It just stays zoomed in all the time. I can pan around the screen using the number keys, but I can't zoom out.

browser scrolling issue

Forgive me for not searching but I only have my nexus one right now and when I start typing in the xda search box with my phone the search box disappears immediately each time I type the first letter.
First of all xda seems to be pretty good with scrolling. Yahoo, espn, most other sites however don't. This is about the issue with scrolling where images get kind of fuzzy (almost like the resolution drops) and it makes the scrolling seem jittery because the lines and characters are rapidly switching width with every frame while scrolling. It's most noticeable when you stop scrolling but leave your finger on the screen and then really look at the image before removing your finger, once you remove your finger the screen will become as crisp as before you initially applied your finger to scroll.
I think the only reason this bothers me is because the iPhone screen doesn't change at all when scrolling and so it appears more clear/crisp/smooth. Honestly I wish I never fiddled with the 3gs to begin with because I can't stop comparing it to my truly amazing nexus one.
I'm wondering is this a hardware issue or software? I recall a recent pro-iphone article about poor image quality that was soundly refuted by the incomparable people here at xda with the explanation that it was simply a software issue not a hardware defect and I believe the issue was centered around the gallery app and touching the images?
Are these two issues essentially the same in that they can both be resolved with software updates? I just compared the nexus browser scrolling with that of my g1 and mytouch, and although they both are extremely jumpy/jittery I don't notice the change in image quality when removing/applying my finger like on the nexus so it must be the nexus hardware or else 2.1. I'm basically looking for an explanation about what different things make images/characters/lines change in quality and make scrolling so jerky and what can be done.
Thanks to anyone who can decipher and helpfully reply to this post
Edit: Here's the only thing I found searching Google. It addresses the issue pretty well but I'm still curious to hear what xda folks think.

Apparently the g1/mytouch jumpiness is from the weak processors. It seems clear its software related on the nexus, I just hope its important enough to Google to fix...

The issue you're seeing is due to how each OS renders the webpages.
The iPhone renders webpages as one huge jpeg file. So scrolling will of course be very smooth. However, that's why when you pinch and zoom in, the text doesn't reflow. You have to pan left and right like a madman. EXTREMELY annoying.
The Nexus One renders the webpage.... well, as a TRUE webpage. It actually renders each element separately. The "fuzzyness" you're seeing is that pictures are downsized in quality while scrolling so that the scrolling is smooth. I've never seen it be laggy or choppy as a result of this (maybe because I'm using the Desire ROM/browser), but the fuzzyness is still there.
Either way, I'd rather have webpages rendered in their true nature. Increased functionality (text reflow, flash, etc) > silly eye candy that personally doesn't bother me and only happens for a split second anyway. Like most things, the iPhone OS is built for the eye first (minus the nasty home screen), functionality second.
that was an awesome reply, thank you
i love the being able to pinch to zoom and then tap or press zoom to format it. i guess if it has to be a choice of smoothness or utility im with you, id hate for the page to not reformat when i zoomed.

[Q] HTC Aria. Landscape?

I just received my HTC Aria today from the AT&T/Alltel transition. I've been looking at ROMs the past couple days and i've started wondering about this. On my current phone [HTC Wildfire((Bee))] The normal keyboard layout is quite a pain. I love landscape mode, but because of the mass amount of crap i've got running on it-its effectively useless. So, heres my question. Is there a way to set ROMs to remain in landscape-or otherwise make a ROM myself [either from scratch or use someone else's as a base with their permission]? I'd like the whole home-screen and all default views to be in landscape mode. But where theres apps [games] have them run standard based on the tilt device in the phone.
It just seems more effective to have a phone always in landscape. At least for me. My tv/computer monitor are landscape based. My ipod touch [its a good coaster for drinks now ] and viewing media such as youtube/videos on mobile devices are better in landscape. So... Any help/advice?
Btw, i would think it would be easy. Just make the icons/text/status bar display horizontal when phone is vertical/standard position.

Question [TB-Q706F] Rotate screen in desktop mode.

Is it possible to flip the screen or rotate to portrait in desktop mode? I've tried apps that control rotation and i've tried via ADB but nothing worked.

Nope. That's why its desktop mode. Switch it off and rotate freely
That's too bad. I find portrait mode more useful when watching some videos and still doing some browsing or emails.
Video on the top in 16:9 and nice neatry square window below. And some floating windows for little things.
But i guess it's their way or the highway.
And on my work pc I have 4 displays 3 of them in portrait mode. So desktop isn't synonymous with landscape.
He'll I used to have my CRT back in the day.
4:3 in portrait was nice for writing thesis with lots of equations to keep all in view.

Unfortunately they didnt think programmers couldn't benefit of it (that's why i would like the rotation on desktop mode too :/), anyway, maybe they could add that on future updates.
It's a shame that such uses are not taken care of. It's a great piece of hardware. Both for work and entertainment. I just wish there was a bit more flexibility when it comes to its use.
But at least in next update the touchpad on the dedicated keyboard should start functioning properly in portrait mode.
But there are a lot of tiny things that should have been caught in QA.
I hope as the time goes by there will be more allowances for more flexible use.
