Anyone have hard proof, and can link on battery life usage with a G2X with Wifi vs 4G.
Trying to settle an argument with the other person saying that 4G has battery battery life than wifi.
I don't have screenshots but with wifi on most of the time, my battery lasts MUCH longer then pure 4G.

that's what i experience also, but he keeps on insisting that 4G will give better battery life and I'm trying to settle this.

Ditto wifi easily outlasts my 4g by at least 1/3 or more
Sent from somewhere with something using tapatalk
If your connected to wifi and using it, are you gonna get better battery life VS being connected to either 3g or 4g/hspa+?
and Why if so?
Shoot im sorry, this shouldnt be in this forum. I thought I was in the general questions forums. MY bad people. Please move mods.

This is the General forum. To answer your question, Yes it would use less battery on WiFi. On a data connection the signal is not a constant and the phone is always looking for a stronger signal.
Thanks, thats what I thought. And ive noticed that connected to wifi my battery lasts a lot longer.

yes. And 4g eats your battery.
When I am only using the phone for data, I use WiFi when available. I turn on airplane mode then activate WiFi.
I don't know about that... when I'm on wifi my battery drains like a mofo. Weapon 3.0 ICS theme faux 1.3 kernel.
On every ROM and Kernel I've tried, Wi-Fi uses much, much less battery than 4G. I haven't tried any of the toggles / battery saving apps though so I'm not sure what effect those might have.

Do you disable data when you use wifi?

He shouldn't have to. If he's draining faster on WiFi then something is screwy with his setup.
On stock, cyanogenmod 7.1, and cyanogenmod 7.1 with various other kernels I've experienced increased battery drain with wi-fi on and connected with the phone sitting at home the entire day. Turn off wi-fi and let it just use the data connection to T-Mobile and I get drastically increased battery times. I'm assuming those of you who get better battery with wi-fi on are in extremely bad signal areas. Also, if you're on cyanogenmod have you turned off the auto wi-fi disconnect when sleeping feature? If you haven't then your battery life when sleeping should be the same as that of wi-fi turned off.
Wi-fi should always be priority if your in range.
Well my personal experience has been that wi-fi eats up battery like crazy. Same thing happens to the other smartphone users I know around here so I was surprised to see that people get better battery times with wi-fi on. Are you guys completely turning off your cellular radio? I don't like the quality and slight delay of wi-fi calling so my cellular radio stays on when I have wi-fi on.
I don't usually notice much difference between wifi and 3g battery drain here (no 4G for tmo here).
As someone already posted, my drain is worst when 3g signal is poor, like when I'm at work and the metal building interferes with everything.
Have you tried checking logs while connected to wifi to see if maybe some app or service goes crazy?
Nothing fishy going on when wi-fi is on. I get about 10-14 hours on battery with wi-fi on and next to no use of the phone vs somewhere around 20+ hours with wi-fi off and similar extremely light use. I keep meaning to do some more standardized testing where I literally don't touch the phone but life gets in the way and I have to make/answer a call or txt or whatever so I can't nail down any hard numbers. Typical experience on a slow day for me is that if I forget my wi-fi is on, my battery will be somewhere in the 3-5% range when I'm getting ready for bed while if I hadn't left it on, I can go to sleep and wake up and it'll still be hanging in there.

That's true, I've always believed that Wifi eats battery faster because someone(don't remember who) always told me that Wifi uses more battery because it processes data faster, but I always noticed that when I used 4g, it drains a lot faster.
I always blamed it on the ROM, but I can see that it's not the ROM's fault.
hi everyone
can someone please tell me if they having the same issue?
ive got a stock desireS updated to 2.3.5 and sense 3
but im getting bad wifi drain in standby, not sure why
mobile data seems fine?
ive unselected best performance under wifi
wifi sleep set to never(which is how i like it)

Can you quantify the drain? Attach screenshots of the battery graph if you can... Use battery monitor widget to log the per minute battery drain with Wifi on, and then wifi off, then post back some objective observations so that we can establish if there is truly a problem...

40mA!!! Wow, that's huge... i get around 8mA average on both Wifi and Mobile Data (2G)
Dunno what could be causing it though... since its stock and all, i can't even ask you to change the ROM and check if the drain persists. But you, my friend, do have a problem!

yeah
thats my concern
maybe someone else with a stock rom can comment?
mayb somehow during the update from sense 2.1 to sense 3 something went wrong?
will a factory reset help?
unless theres an app thats using wifi even in standby?
sometimes when i wake the phone it shows 9ma..and then most times 40ma
getting awesome battery life on mobile data and with both off
I've been working on improving my battery. I've noticed a big improvement by using cpu-editor and super saver app. I've also noticed that battery lasts a lot longer on WiFi than it does on 4g Since 8:30 this morning (7 hours), I've used 33% mostly on WiFi and I think that's pretty good.
So, I was wondering... what can be done to improve battery life when on AT&T? I've tried the new radio, I'm not sire that's made a difference. Maybe it has, hard to tell.

If you're on LTE, you will inevitably use more power than just WiFi, that's just how it works.
If you can kick down to HSPA+ or UMTS you will see significant battery savings.

Thank you for your reply.
I'm in Albany, NY. I've been told we have one LTE tower here, but I've not experienced it yet. I should locate it and drive to it just so I can get a taste of how fast it is.
That said, I use HSPA+, unless I'm on WiFi.

HSPA+ uses more battery than WiFi when actively using it for data, the change just isn't as significant compared to when using the phone on LTE.
Some things you'll want to do to really get battery life savings is to eliminate partial wakelocks, and turn down screen brightness either by using a custom ROM or managing settings manually, as HTC's autobrightness is terrible out of the box and doesn't properly turn down brightness when you need it to, or turn it up when you need it to.
After that, if you don't need to have push email all the time then you can turn off always on mobile data, or manually turn off mobile data when you aren't using it.
Our Russian LTE testers of HTC One XL reports about 1.5-2 hours of LTE tethering. Make your conclusions.

Can someone explain to me how to go from LTE to HSPA+ to EDGE? I've tried looking in the settings but all I can find is a "Mobile network" on/off toggle. There is no option to turn on/off LTE, or HSPA+ or EDGE. It's a bit frustrating. Then in my status bar, the 4G icon is always displayed even when "Mobile network" is off. No data but it still shows up. Is this how it is supposed to be?
BTW, I'm using the stock ROM with Apex Launcher. I do not want to root or use a custom ROM.
Hello. Can i please know, whether the distance to a WiFi-Router does take influences to your battery life?
Will my battery drain slower, if i use my Phone 3m or 50m away from a WLAN-Router? (e.g. For browsing in the Internet )

Unlike a cell tower connection, wifi will not drain more nor less bettery if the phone is closer or ferther from the wireless acess point.
However wifi will drain more battery if it is on and not connected that if it if on and connected,

OK, thanks.
Somebody told me that being far from the WLAN Router (at the Edge of the Range) will slow down the Internet speed, and the Device will have to filter noise and struggle to get information. Doesn't this affect the Battery life? This guy told me that it does actually affect the battery life.

Yeah it affects because of the distance, the smartphone Will use more energy trying to download the Page you want to open or the file you want to download etc

Two different opinions? So who is right?

Please consider answering my other question about WLAN.
Of course Wifi chips will struggle to download pages/files if an acess point is far, but they will still use the same amount of energy.
