Hey,
I just can't manage custom alarm tones to work. No matter where I put them (Windows dir, Windows/Rings, My docs./My Rings) and no matter what format I use (mp3, midi, wav, wma) they just won't work. When I click the clock (M2D) -> Alarms -> and then click that small belt my sounds cannot be found in that dropdown menu.
Any ideas are highly appreciated!
Cheers
alarms are put in the /windows folder.
you can also use this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=370481
and try this app..
I already tried putting them into Windows directory. I tried mp3, midi, wav and wma.. None of these worked actually. It's just not listed in that dropdown menu. Pretty annoying.
Cheers
i suggest you try what i offered..
the file i posted works perfectly on my Wizard...
I don't like to use 3rd party app for a thing that should work normally.
Cheers
first of all, the only alarms (wake up alarm, that is..) WM reads is wav.. by default
if you open clock.exe and check alarm sounds you will only see wav formats.
and they are found in the windows dir.
i'm not sure about M2D but i suggest you add a wave file called test.wav to your windows dir and check if it appears in the default alarm app of windows.
if it doesn't... I'd suggest either using 3rd party/a hardreset, or if the rom is problematic.. switch for one that doesn't have that problem.
i just tried putting a wav in my windows folder and it appears in the list.
I put a wav file in the windows folder, it showed up in the list, but windows wouldn't let me select it, when I select it, it will automatically just to Default Alarm Tone ! I have cool edit in my PC, I was wondering, if the file needs to be in a specific format (i.e. bit rate)? Any ideas? And there are a whole lot of types of wavs, adpcm, pcm, raw ...
EDIT:
Found it, here :
http://vanbeekbr.blogspot.com/2008/07/adding-custom-alarm-tones-to-windows.html
btw, I suggest using G-alarm.. besides the fact that it's very useful you can also use mp3s and waves.. create playlists for alarms...

Is it possible on the XDA 2 to set an alarm that will play an MP3 audio stored on SD Card?
May be there is some kind of software that can be installed to do this? Preferably freeware :!: :?:  :?
Thanks in advance.
i would think it pretty easy if you changed it to wma and set it up in sounds and notifications or what ever that entry in systems is called
Thanks for suggestion. However, the problem with converting MP3 to wav (using dbPowerAMP) causes the MP3 to grow to a huge size. 1.9MB converts to 30MB!
I imagine the same would happen if I were to convert to wma using an appropriate converter.
Any other suggestions?
cdex is a pretty good and free encoder for the pc platform
it can make wav mp3 and make wav wma and make mp3 vma and ....
when it's a not music you'll be listening to on your headset
you can limit the kb/sec to 64
wma at 64kb/sec dont take up more space then a mp3 at 64kb/sec
and sounds better

No mate.
Other way round.
Becuase mp3 and wma are compressed audio formats (small size) whereas wav is generally not (though you can use really silly low settings, but it would sound terrible).
So going from mp3 to wav will of course make a huge file.
BUT, going from mp3 to wma will produce a SMALLER file size even than your mp3, as it's a better format (i.e. smaller file size, at same or better quality)
I use 40 second wma tones for my XDA2. But for my girlfriend's Nokia, I have to use mp3.
My files at 96K quality, are around 500K file size. Her mp3 at same quality is around 585K for the same file.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for your advice - re MP3 to wma. I understand what you're saying. I downloaded dbPoweramp which has option to convert to from MP3 to wma but whenever I try to do it, it comes up with an message saying that I require appropriate Codec. Well that doesn't help me much. What the heck is a Codec, where do I get one from and how do I set it up?
I'm sure one of you guys will know! Thanks in advance.

The same site you downloaded dbamp from...
Codecs are 'plugins' that handle conversation of all the different file types.
That way, you only need install the codec, for the type of conversion you want to do.
Here's the link for the codecs download page:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm
The direct link for the .wma codec however, is:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-wma.htm
Thanks for that information. You've been a great help. You are right too. Well, mostly right. I downloaded the codec from the link you gave. I then converted MP3 to wma using the "Windows Media Audio V2" option from the Compressed option list. By default, this option gives the "Attirbutes" of 8kbps, 8kHz mono. I tried a few different attributes. Anything higher than 12kbps, 8kHz Stereo seems to convert the MP3 file to very large sizes like 26MB from a 1.9 MB MP3. Also I noticed that when done, it gives the file the extension of .wav rather than .wma. The sensibly sized file converted to around 296Kb. However, sound quality was not as good. Not too concerned about that since just want to use for alarm.
Getting there slowly.
Problem 1 - I copied the 296Kb wav file into the Windows folder of Pocket PC. Went to set alarm. The alarm list displays the converted file in the list of tunes to choose from, but when I try to choose the converted file, it automatically switches to an option named "Default". can't understand why.
Problem 2 - One converted file (mp3 to wav rather than to wma) was selectable as a tune for alarm. However, when the alram goes off, it only lasts for about 10 seconds. How did you manage to set yours to 40 seconds?
Any further advice? Am I doing something wrong?
Forget it. Use freeware Wolf Clock instead.
Ustad...
If it says .wav, it IS a .wav
That's why the file is so large.
Not sure what has happened, but you HAVEN'T created a .wma file from it.
To be fair though, I use a different tool to convert, that requires registration, so maybe you should try the other converter suggested above.
use super alert to set mp3s as alarms. works like a charm. www.pocketgear.com.
Thanks for you help guys. I've just downloaded test trial version of super alert and is look quite good so far.
Will update after I get a chance to play aroud with.
jonlien & the rest of you - THANK YOU very much indeed. “Super Alert” seems to be working fine. Not a very user friendly interface, but the darn thing works. It plays mp3 audios at the clock alarm time. This is great news. I’ve been dying to find a functionality such as this for ages. Can’t understand why Pocket PC doesn’t allow mp3s to be playable direcly via clock alarm settings anyway.
If anyone else decides to use “Super Alert” – please bear in mind that the program doesn’t allow u to select an mp3 directly. Instead it allows u to choose a Playlist which u can define via Windows Media Player. So the thing to do is to define a song you want to use as a Playlist item and select that playlist item in “Super Alert”.
Little tip – to avoid any interference (“Clock Alarm” sound, message display, repetition etc) from the actual XDA’s “Clock Alarm”, remove all the ticks from the options in the “Clock Alarm” for the time you have set the alarm to go off. This was, only the mp3 will play at the designated time and not the XDA’s “Clock Alarm”. This may be obvious to some of you techy guys but I had to mess about to get it to work smoothly.
I’ve only had time to figure out what I’ve said above and only found this use for “Super Alert”. If anyone has found useful/clever ideas or tips, would love to hear.
Once again, thanks to you all.

WOLFCLOCK - Problems!!!
It appears that most of the time the alarm mutes itself and ends up not going off, although the alarm function appears activated on the display - U can see the Alarm off and Snooze buttons at the time the alarm is set, but there is just no sound!!!!
It also switches the fone sound off so when a call comes in, it doesnt ring. And i need to turn off wolfclock at the running programs place so that the sound will come bk. It doesnt simply adjust the volume of the PDA, but somehow, mutes the entire fone.
Can anyone advise please :?: :?: :?:
PS - Super Alert seems to be working fine, but interface is crap!!
You can try mortplayer, which is also freeware + plays Mp3s/Ogg + has an alarm built-in. It's like killing a few birds at once.

:? I have a XDA2 and want to use Pink Floyds Money as my ring tone. I have got this track on my SD card in a mp3 format but have not got a clue what to do. If anyone can help me I would be really gratefull. I will need step by step instructions. Email [email protected]
You will have to get a WAV / WMA or MID version of the file.
Then via settings / system tab / add ringtone you can select the file.
or; play the song via media player. make sure you know which part of the song you want to use as a ringer...can't be the whole whole song since you're bound to answer the phone anyway... at the same time use your notes app; press the recorder. you'll have to be a little quick; when the song / part you want is coming get ready to record it. you can record like 30 seconds worth...that's enough considering you won't be listening to the whole song before you answer the phone. from there test the recorded sample; rename it then paste the file in the ring's folder of windows. select it in your phone app as your ringer and there you go. oh; make sure that the microphone agc setting is in the "disabled" mode for the auto-adjust volume. also make sure the volume of the unit (the pda; not the phone) is down a notch. recording quality is quite good; mighty handy when you can't find the wav file on the internet. i use the muppet's "manamana" song; i was able to use this as a ringer via the process i discribed above.
cheers

If you wanna be able to access and use music files (mp3 and wma format) located in your sd card as ringtones, you may also consider changing the registry setting. Here is the step by step advice
1. Install regedit in your device (in case you haven't had it yet)
2. Open the regedit and look for the following values
HEKY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/SoundCategories/Ring
Then under Ring Folder -> tap Directory, you'll see that the default directory is set to be \Window\Ring. You can change that directory to your preference (e.g. \Storage Card\My Music\). Soft-reset the unit. At this stage, all music files in MP3 and WMA format can be accessed directly from the storage card
3. Go to Phone->Tools->Options->Ring tone, and select whatever song you prefer using a your ringer.
Note that evey time someone calls you, the device will locate the songs at the specified location (e.g. SD card) and hence the ability to play the ringer properly also depends on the speed at which the device and the SD card interact.

I mistyped the file format, actually the only compatible formats are .wav and .wma. Sorry for the mislead
Hey everyone
I need some help with my XDA.
I can no longer play wma files as ringtones. I could a few days ago.
Im a registered user of PocketZenPhone and I used to have different wma ringtones on different profiles.
Now none can be played.
If I use Pocket Music I can play .wma files but if I go to "Settings --> Sounds & Notifications --> Notifications" and select any wma file, even the build in ones and press play I hear nothing. The strange thing is that I can't even leave the "Notifications" menu.
Each time I press Ok it returns me to "Incoming Ringtone" I have to force to go to Today screen to leave this menu. If I select wav file for ringtone its played OK.
I checked out the forums and the net and found some references to Windows Media Player file associations.
I removed all audio progs and even removed any registry key concerning wma files. I created new association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player does nothing or most of the times it gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again"
What the hell is that? Media Player version is 9 built 14053.
All my ringtones were and are in the \Windows\Rings directory
Registry looks OK
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wma only has a (Default) String value of WMAFile
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMAfile has association with mwplayer.
Any suggestions.
P.S. Sorry for the big post. just tryed to give as much info as possible.
Wma ??
Does anyone has or had similar problem that can help?
i got that problem..
i got that problem too.. mine i uninstalled pocket music.. then it went fine.. i guess all your wma files was running in pocket music.. that it won't play with windows media.. that i didn't get.. coz if a file is associated it still should and can play.. try it if it works...
You are right wma files were played by Pocket Music but not only did I remove the association and unistalled it but also restored association to Windows Media Player. Still no joy though.
Same problem here!
Well, sort of... The thing is that SOME .wma or midi files don't work as ringtones anymore but some others do.
I also use PocketZenPhone.
Weird...
Media Player error reproducing wma files.
Can anybody more experienced with XDAs help us here. The Media Player error when playing wma files from a file manager can be replicated by anyone here?
The firt one plays but the subsequent ones produce the foll. error:
X in red circle, and,
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again".
Is sometheing wrong with Media Player installation?
file association
The key is making sure that the .wma is associated with windows media player. you have to go into the application and un/select .wma to default to windows media player. you can also do this with a tweak program, but its best to do it within the actual applications. otherwise, you will hear either nothing or a warning beep in place of the selected file. This will also hold true for any ringtone program you may have.
I just got this problem too. Tried to open a file through explorer and nothing is set as the defult player for wma files. Any ideas how to set them back to windows media player? Is there a simple reg key that can be changed?
Edit: I installed pocket tweak, but when I go to choose a program it starts in my documents with no way to go back up a level to get to the windows folder (where mplaer.exe is).
Edit 2: I did a soft reset and ringtones worked again. How strange.
Media Player error message on wma lpayback
Well "davidleecpowell" if you read my firts post you will see that not only have I removed association from oher audio player but also completely removed the software except media player. Also re assigned association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your

Its very strange indeed and the last thing want to do is YET ANOTHER HARD RESET.
Suggestions anyone?
Hi,
Could someone please tell me how can I reinstall Window Media Player for my Tornado and where can I download it ?
The reason I need to do this is that my WMPlayer does not work & MP3 can not be used as ring tone.
If I select any MP3 or WMA file in the setting / Sound, it will say the file is corrupted or not supported. My Phone will only play *.mid file as ring tone.
I installed TCPMP afterwards, and my MP3 files are working fine under TCPMP.
Thank you
AP
You can't reinstall a program being in ROM. You need to do an hard reset...
You need to do a registry hack in order to associate your MP3 files with WMP instead of TCMP.
I'll check later which key you need to modify.
Don't think so.
Dont' uninstall WMplayer. I'm sure that you installed PocketMusic on your device, this has made you could'n set ringtone. If you want to set ringtone, you must paste *.wma (windows media audio 9.0 file) in applicationdatas/sound. Good lucks
Does somebody know how to force Leo to play ringtones with mp3 extension? I already added some mp3's to windows/rings folder, but system doesn't see them.
its probably easiest using the MP3 Trimmer on the phone under the "MULTIMEDIA" folder...
Put the mp3 file in the "My Documents"-folder in the root of the mobile, not on the SD-card.
That is to say:
root/My Documents/mp3file.mp3
This mp3-file will work for both ringtone and sms-tone.

Alarm sounds: are stored in the Windows dir

this setup is very simple:

Hello
Do NOT waste valuable space from main memory for the mp3 ringtone which placed in My documents or /Windows.
Place the mp3 files in the root of the SD card without folders. It will show up and works great and You do not have to worry about flashing any custom rom. The files in the SD card stays.
Good luck

Sometimes life is so simple. Thank you very much, your solution is the ONE. Works wonders.

for ringtones, u can have the mp3 in anywhere phone or SD memory, directly choose the file to be used as a ringtone in the file explorer...
for other notifications or messages or alarms, convert the file to wav and copy it to /windows folder ...then go to settings->menu->all settings->sounds and notifications n select the tune for the specific event.
HTC HD2 or iphone?
Hello guys. i was getting ready to buy an HD2 but now i see that simple things like diffirent mp3 for calls or for a caller or sms, alarms etc. are configured so hard, along with other hard questions like the difficult customizing of the hd2 have started make me thing again of the iphone. What would you suggest me?
Keep in mind,
if u use this Ringtone App u can change your ring directory as well as have multiple rings for each alarm.
thanks,
Keith
I used Mp3 trimmer to cut a song short. Now I cant seem to remove it from the device as I cant find it anyway. But it is still shoing up on the ring tone menu.

There's nothing difficult in changing the sounds. As you can see, there are many ways how to do that and they all work (for most users). There is nothing more simple then just copy your desired ringtones to windows folder and then just set it up.
Buying an iphone would be a terrible mistake, it's an old and inferior device compared to HD2.
MP3 Ringtone on SD Card
It's not recommended to save MP3 or any other big files into device memory. copy your MP3 files only to your "Storage Card".
It's so easy, just copy your MP3 song(s) to "\Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones" folder (and if you don't have "My Ringtones" folder just create one).
