Hi, I would like to give my dad my old Kaiser and my copy of TT6 now I don't need them.
However, I doubt very, very much that he will remember to keep it charged (He uses his phone like once a month) and it will most likely hard reset, losing the TT install.
I was wondering, is it possible to set it up so that should it hard reset, he will not need to reactivate tomtom maps.
I am thinking something along these lines:
1) Install a bit of s/w that monitors for registry changes.
2) Install TT6 and the maps, and activate.
3) Take a dump of the registry changes, and a copy of the files installed to the device
4) Build a CAB to install the REG and files in the right places and inject it into the ROM.
I guess that the maps could be installed to the SD card, as long as the s/w had the correct activation info then they would be OK?
Would that work? Any advice appreciated.
If a device running WM5 or newer goes flat it doesn't lose any of the applications or software that are installed, this used to be the case with WM2003SE or earlier OS, so let him have the device and it won't give you any issues with lost applications/ hard resets.
If you are still worried about this consider Sprite Backup, but it really isn't needed for this - Mike

Another approach could be to keep the required cabs in the extended memory, modify the autoinstall.exe (usually by changing the autoinstall.ini) that runs after a hard reset to install the required files.
the only problem is that you would have to manually register the application.
(simply making changes in the reg. will not register/activate TOMTOM).
maybe you could have a note installed that would have the required registration info??
the other way would be to use a pre-activated tomtom.

Well I just got my iMate a couple of weeks ago and sold my Treo so I am now a slave to Bill once more.
My questions are regarding installation on WM, I know that in Palm, I could just copy the app file to the palm ( or cad) and it would not only run from there but would add itself to the desktop.
Can someone please explain the install process on WM, is there a registry ? Can I just drop fles in and expect them to work or is ther an install with DLL's, registry entries and so on ? If I install on to an external card and then do a hard reset, will I have to reinstall?
How is uninstall done ? I installed Destinator in the main memory which just about took up all the memory I had, and once it did not seem to work, I uninstalled it, but my main memory seemed to remain full ??? So I had to do a hard reset.
By the way, where are files tranferred via IR and BT stored on the device, can I specify another place ?
Hope someone can help me ASAP

There are three ways apps are installed on a PPC.
1) Via a setup file on your PC, it will use the ActiveSync connection to install it onto your device. You get the option to install to the memory or the card.
2) Via a CAB file on the device, you tap it, and start the install, then select internal or storage.
3) Via a program executable that you just tap to run, it is up to you where you place these files.
I usually install system apps internally, and everything else on the card. There's no real difference in speed between internal and storage under WM5 since the internal memory is also flash.
If you hard reset it, yes you will need to reinstall everything, but unless you really mess it up, you shouldn't have to. Letting the battery run down will not wipe your data as everything is in flash. There are a number of backup apps you can get, three most popular being Sunnysoft Backup, SPB Backup, and Sprite Backup. If you are new to the platform and will be tinkering, perhaps a backup of your good working config would be recommended, then after you mess it up with all the little apps you are bound to be playing with, you can restore it to it's good working state.
As for beaming, I believe it simply places new files in the My Documents folder, the only way you can change this is by the registry if it's even possible.
Some more info regarding installs?
I was also woneing where such things as favorites, voice dial recordings and others are saved, is it possible to back these up seperately ?
those are in the /Documents folder. And recordings are inside the /Document/Notes
Rather than flashing the FuZE... if I do a hard reset with the trick to not install the AT&T bloatware, will that make the phone any faster?
Also... I just ran a backup with Sprite to my memory card. It is backing up 165mb of stuff. Does that mean that is is backing up all of the AT&T bloatware? I had all boxes checked off except Storage Card. What will the backup entail? It would be kind of stupid if it backed up all of the software I'm trying to remove.
if you have everything ticked in sprite backup then its probably backuping your registry as well.. I'd say go through the options of sprite backup and tick only what you want backed up.
Then hard reset and soft reset right after its booted up before it installs the customizations.. or just use a cooked rom..
I tried to figure out what to uncheck - hopefully this goes right... Will it speed everything up though?
No Manila2D after soft reset?
Question, I just did this. Did the soft reset when it's customizing, and now I don't have the Manila2D installed or at least it's not visible. TouchFlo is in fact there, I see it in Settings, but I do I have to separately find the cab to install it? I'm looking around the file system right now to see if it's on there so I can just install it from there.
Right now, it's just the regular Windows Mobile interface.
Thanks.

Don...I had the same issue with my Fuze. Here is what you do...
Hard Reset on phone
pull battery when customization screen pops up
Reboot
Go to Windows Explorer and look for the following .cab files(I did them in this order):
PT_Manila_REG (TF3D)
MSFT_Security (policy work around - needed)
WM6_PPC (Opera browser)
Java_Preloads (needed for browser)
Optional:
Remove Hidden Proxy
OzIM (multi IM program - I like and use regulary)
MobileBackup (free and I use it)
Once you have done this, reboot and go to this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=413562
for some really nice tweaks. Before you do these tweaks though, you'll want to download the following files (sorry, you'll have to look for them):
.NETCF 3.5 (get this from Microsoft site)
Schaps Advanced Config v3.3
some type of registry editor (I have Schap's)
What tweaks you do are up to you...best thing is to experiment and decide what you like best.
Additional files that I have downloaded because of what I use my phone for are the following:
fp7_ppc (flashplayer v7 for pocket pc)
cesetup (Citrix Client software for ppc)
ManilaCustomizer (fantastic program for editing TF3D) get this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437420
Diamond TF3d Config (another fantastic program for tweaking TF3D)
mUn BackGround4AllPages (changes the background on all of the TF3d tabs to match the Home tab)
LiveSearch
Google Maps
WiFiFoFum (wireless net detector)
Fun files that I have installed:
DivX
Lightsaber 1.0 (yes, I am a Star Wars nerd!!)
YahooGoNet
Having all these various programs installed, my Fuze blisters! I had a Tilt previous and tried almost every custom ROM for it over the course of a year. When I got this phone, I was already aware of how to not install the bloat from AT&T. Thanks to other helpful people on xda, I was able to locate the files that I wanted to install. Hope this helps and have fun with your phone, I know I am!!
pghguy1989,
THANK YOU. You were right on the money. I loaded these cab files:
PT_Manila_REG (TF3D)
MSFT_Security (policy work around - needed)
WM6_PPC (Opera browser)
Java_Preloads (needed for browser)
And rebooted, and I'm back up and running with my TouchFlo. That was exactly what I wanted. I was annoyed that it did put some of the AT&T branding on there, but I don't really care. I'm going to now use the TFCustomizer, and clean it up.
Thanks a TON. I was going crazy googling and looking for the right cab files to make it happen!
Can't thank you enough.

Hi!
I'm considering to move apps to the sd card. But, I want to know whats the real advantage to do this.
It's just the more space on internal storage ? Or may be an easy way to "reinstall" apps after a system upgrade ?
If I upgrade to cupcake (for example), my apps still there ? If I just make the "ln" command, the apps "reappear" ? I think not, but ...
Any comment will be apreciated.
registry
you would have to have some kind of backup of registry or at least the registry keys for the programs you would be "reinstalling". Task Manager by FdcSoft is one good program that can do it (I think it is a module called , mine is v3.1). Total Commander is another one that says it can back up registry or registry keys but mine always gets stuck. In all other respects though it is an indispensable tool.
possibly the best approach to use instead, is keep a library of your cab files (make them read-only with Total Commander before you install so they don't disappear), and then when you do an actual reinstall it will do the registry stuff for you, perhaps more correctly than trying to piecemeal restore from registry key backups. I also like to save a shortcut to the websites I got the cab files from, to check for updates later. you can save to favorites, then get them from \windows\favorites in Total Commander and cut/paste them into the library on the storage card.
this way if you need to rebuild your system you have all the original install files in one easy place to work from, and a cleaner registry should be the result.
not sure about dream...?
my post a minute ago was assuming my news reader took me to the XDA forum for HTC wizard - however now I see you asked about Dream. So the basic concepts still apply, but specific programs I mentioned might not.
yes, the sd storage option will allow you to save internal space for stuff like email, sms, and mms.
also, as far as i know updates dont require you to reinstall applications. only baseband radio updates require losing programs. of course many people say you should "wipe" (eg restore) your phone after updates to ensure a clean install....your mileage will, of course, vary.

i've been RC29, RC30, RC33 and have not had to wipe at all .. you never have to wipe .. but depending and how much stuff you modify on your phone you could screw things up to the point where a wipe is necessary
I had to wipe when I went from RC30 with a custom theme to RC33 for some reason. I got the infamous flashing-android-loop-screen thingy. After a wipe it installed without a hitch.
#4 - ADDED MY SOURCE FILES!!!! Just in case u wanna change something
Ok guys...here we go again I try my best to put some of t7he things i like into the same cab...looks huge...but looks nice Some of the best features without touching too much the rom. DISCOVER YOURSELF Is all I can say
1. Random contacts retouch

7. ...some more tweaks specially on manilla
PS - I will keep adding/fixing things Hugs
Ai ai ai....people complaining about loosing data with this cab. Well..I tested pretty much times with different roms. In any case, please backup ur data before install and please: make sure you have enough space to install and work. And follow the proper steps down. Is easy. And please feedback with ur rom's so I can keep testing.

Pre-install:
YOU MUST HAVE A SDCARD!How to install?
1. DISABLE TOUCH OR M2D IN TODAY!
2. RUN CAB
3. DON'T LET IT SLEEP WHILE INSTALL!
More caps
Here some more caps...
Looks nice but how do we install two zip files?
Source files!
Ok my friends!!!! I decided to share with you guys the source files for this so that everything is clear If u feel u can change source.
I used Cabwiz to pack it. I FEEL THE Source!
1. Install cabwiz
2. Create a folder to cabwiz folder and unzip the inf into there
3. Unzip the other zips to same folder
4. Run ..\cabwiz "DJKOA M2D 1.00.4000.1903.inf" /compress
it will generate the CAB.
Cheers
Won't install for me, says installation unsuccessful because of insufficient system privileges.
Phone was connected to pc all through installation so did not got to sleep.
thankssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Good stuff mate but this should be posted in Kaiser software section Anyway, going to have a spin at this.

djkoa, this is probably because of a single file. Ussaully a dll will cause this. Some dll's don't like being installed via cab. They must be manually copied. Another problem could be that piplewis has a dll or file installed that can't be overwriten. Another usaully a dll problem. I've noticed some dll's, once you replace it, you can't replace it again. The work around I found is to rename said dll as .bak which will cause the ROM to use the original again and allowing the file to finally be replaced.
Overwise, great job, only ther suggestion. I thought about making 1 big cab myself, but realized large cab's are difficult to uninstalled. If the user changes 1 small thing, it won't uninstall and will cause them to need to hard reset. Have that problem with NeoTitanium. People change a registry or something and BAM, can't uninstall it.

Pretty spot on when it comes to .dll You can make the the cab itself to step by step rename->copy it. Other than that its a ok project, one idea I thought of is whit youre project to make it more customizeable is to take advatage of one if the autoinstallers. And then make a folder whit all the cabs, if you make the whole SJABANG finish to go out of the box you can lateron change its contents aswell as the users themself.
I have 2-3 of theese setups myself whit payed content as stuff from lakeridge, SPB and so on. Making a cab is good training but not wery customizable in the loong run on this project IMO.

Another work around for Uninstalling, is to reinstall it first. It's a bit time consuming, but even if WinMo can't uninstall the software when trying to reinstall, it'll still let you reinstall replacing all original files and "Should" let you uninstall finally. A few extra steps and time consuming true, but better than a HArd Reset if it works.

Getting the perfect setup is wery time consuming, its no secret that the order its installed, register strings overlap eachoter and so on will count for the final result. Reinstalling the cab just to have it removed from installed list doesnt mean you have a good uninstallation. Going from one setup to another whit several cabs when it comes to interface, its almsout inevitable that you going to hard reset to have a fresh installation.
My thought was that its easyer to update the package itself, not update the software on the phone
Ok, I disabled m2d and without soft resetting (after 1st attempt) tried to install again. This time it seems to have installed.
Just restarting now, will let you know.
*Edit*
Yup, seems to have installed fine now.
I can't uninstall......hardreset now
Hi, is it possible you can make this into a .cab.

Hmm, I think I am going to pass on this on for now. All brewed in like this is unlikly that im going to have a good installation IMO. Should be step by step whit whit atleast one reset as far as I could see (HTC HOME),. Good combination, no doubth. But to just gather everything in one big cab im not a fan of. Also I would take advatage of pre-xml in making of this
I dont mean to be critical in a bad way here, its good training and as I sad good combination. I didnt pop the setup.dll as I stopped looking after a minutt, clearly you havent used that much time on this mister Also this installation is expect upon that you have a SD card in phone upon installation (but who doesnt have that, but still a good thing to inform on).
I perform a remove it, run it and after about 5 minutes of it can not remove so I hardreset
after hardreset (keep in storage Kaiser) the entire all data on my storage end are lost, empty storage .... please help me,
So....anyone try it and check

That is what happens when you hard reset the phone. All the data:contacts, messages, pictures, songs, etc. are lost. You should had used ppm backup (I think that is what its called) to save your contacts and messages on a sd card on computer.

Hi, I'm pretty much a noob to this forum as you can see from my number of posts.
Recently got a HTC Iolite and been reading the forums, there are some things that I wasn't able to find, so I thought I'd just ask about it here.
Programs affecting interface
Currently I have the following installed, QM2.8, M2DC, PHM reg editor, Touchflo of course, I'm planning to try out SPB Pocket Pack and SPB Mobile Shell.
Here comes the confusing part, what's the difference between each of these? Which programs are a complete overlap? I read somewhere that SPB Pocket Pack and MS can complement each other, but for TF and MS, it's either TF or MS and not both together. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!
About Hard Reset
I recently had a service.exe error after a soft reset. But it only happened once, I'm wondering whether it might have been caused by the installation of M2DC. So, I'm thinking of doing a hard reset. However, I do have some concerns. I have PAPAGO X3 installed when I first bought my Iolite. Upon doing a hard reset, will it remove PAPAGO as well?
What about programs that I installed on my storage card? What happens to it upon a hard reset? I'm sure it will have to be reinstalled, but what about the space it occupies on the storage card? Do I need to remove them as well, in other words, uninstall them first then do a hard reset?
Having said all that, I'm not particularly too concerned about the services.exe issue, since it's only happened once.
Appreciate any advice I can get! Sorry if some of these questions have been addressed in the forums, perhaps someone could direct me to the respective places?
hardreset return your device to how it was the first time you ever started it up
any program you installed after this will be gon untill you reinstall them
hardreset will not of cause change any programs located on the sdcard
but if any of those programs require dll's to be placed on the main device
or require some reg keys to be placed in the registry
then they too will require a reinstall

Does that mean that if the programs do not require dll's to be placed on the main device, I will still be able to find it immediately after a hard reset?
