Is there an application for the TP which allows for the device to be used as a HID over Bluetooth to control a desktop PC?
there are programs that let you control your desktop PC in various ways, but nothing specific for TP or the keyboard

Well it would need to modify a little bit the bluetooth stack and emulate a HID keyboard, I guess.
Tonight I'm the Jeremy Clarkson of the day, with his most famous quote: "how hard can it be?!" when obviously it is very hard to do...
So I absolutely don't mean it is an easy thing to do, but I'm sure some experts in XDA-Dev are skilled enough to do it.

Another option is to use a program like VNC to pilot your pc from the your raphael.
Used to do it with my old ppc (Toshiba e830). This works only if the computer you want to control is also in the same network (connected either through LAN cable or wifi).

About the size of a lighter, and you can use it for you phone as well. (Picture attaching your phone to the TV in the back. Using your bluetooth to open a program on it. Then typing away on the scren with this "futuristic keyboard from the stars!!".... or something like that.)

Useless? I don't know... over priced, and unnecessary maybe, but a portable full sized keyboard doesn't seem useless to me.

I have. Very stupid to tap a plain table, since you cannot feel anything (even the separation of the buttons) you make 60% mistakes.
Also, it is not even portable! You need a large flat surface to put it and to let it throw its beam.
(and one more thing to recharge)

Well, HID implementation in Windows also includes programs and services that start with your windows. So if you have to install only 1 program to make it run I don't think it is a big deal.
It's 3 years I use my main computer this way. As I have a projector and don't want to start it every time I installed VNC server in my main computer (freeware) and VNC client in both my laptop and PPC, and it works pretty well (especially with Vista on my laptop, it runs pretty smooth).

If you want something that purely converts your phones keyboard into a computer keyboard... @FlippyTK: I'm aware of the VNC solution, but I'm really looking for something as slim and elegant as the software on the SE phones. There are situations where you don't want or can't install anything on the host PC.
@NetApex: Thanks, for the links. The MS patent is strange, how could they file something as obvious as this? There must be prior art... But the patent might be the reason why such a software does not exist. I guess everybody is afraid of the MS lawyers...

I'm not sure a pure HID solution is possible. If the Raphael keyboard is indeed a HID-capable device, then the phone itself is its host. Since you would have to go through the host (in this case, WM) to access the bluetooth stack, the most direct solution is a software "pass-through" program.

The SE solution is using bluetooth HID emulation, so I will take a look into that.
For now, the TCP/IP solution shouldn't be a problem: you can setup a bluetooth PAN for TCP/IP connectivity.
For reference, one software that is closest to what you have in mind is Synergy, a similar host/client pass-through program that allows you to use one keyboard/mouse on multiple networked computers (without using hardware KVM switch, etc). It's only Windows/Mac/Unix, no PPC client, but maybe it will help point you in the right direction.

The software from Jerom does a nice job (http://www.jaylee.org/RemoteControl/) and I used it on my Prophet for some time. It requires for a small program to be installed on the host and it is easy to set up. But I had it hang a few times (typically in the middle of a management presentation) and therefore I abandoned it. The SE solution I had before was absolutely reliable and that's why I look for something similar for WM.
In principle, the solution is simple: Implement a HID device driver and pass key/touches to it. I did some programming for WM devices but I never tackled the bluetooth stack... there is a significant hurdle - otherwise someone else would have done this app already. ;-)

using the phone to open an app that is named "operate as bluetooth keyboard" and clicking start to take control of a home theater PC using teh TV as your monitor and the desktop media PC as the CPU and just using your phone as nothing more than a keyboard would be pretty slick.

I've been reading up on this subject ... I really want to try Ubuntu but I hear it has major bugs ...which on in y'all opinions do you prefer and why?

i recocmend u try a dual boot its actually really easy if u follow the instructions.
i installed ubu about 3weeks ago and i love it because u can customize it to no end and it really dosnt have that many bugs.
i installed inside of windows and did a 20gig partition so its defiantly not my daily, but its still fun to mess around with.
and if you need help with the installation feel free to pm me.
You can try the live image, to test if it suits your purpose. Also, you can use virtual machine to install ubuntu with Windows to test it.
Id reccomend the liveCD or as mentioned running in a virtual machine if your pc can handle it.
This will allow you to explore Ubuntu without any major bugs or chances of wiping your hard drive
Personally i prefer Windows for a development environment, but Ubuntu has its advantages.
I suggest you to choose windows, the best ever, ubuntu is good but not like windows
I have test Linux one times per Year. I will never love it. I use Windows since 3.1. Linux/Ubuntu is not Windows. If you know how windows work use this.
Tri boot OSX Lion, Arch Linux, and Windows 7.
Ubuntu is bloated, and Unity is TERRIBLE.
actually ive been hearing really good things about linux mint isadora its pretty much the same as ubu but has a cleaner overlay and more user freindly.
arch linux just has way more repositorys than ubu and arch linux is more complicated to install.
man the geek radar just went off the charts with that one lmao.
I'm standing at the edge on this one as well. I really like the way Ubuntu looks and how it operates, I'm just not 100% sold yet.
it is what it is, its a love hate relationship with me i love the open source like android but i hate how it looks.
i would definitely recommend running it in virtual machine to try it first before you do any hdd partitions.
if you like mac youll probably like linux since mac is pretty much linux on steroids lol.

LinuxMint is based off of Ubuntu, but, is much more user-friendly for beginner Linux users (comes will all codecs and what not pre-installed, saves having to play around with the Package Manager, etc).
With Linux, there are several different desktop environments. KDE, is the Windows look-a-like, so, choose a KDE version if you prefer and are used to the Windows layout.
I suggest to the OP to go to http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php and download the DVD edition. Burn it to a blank DVD disc, put it into the computer and restart, and start trialling Linux from there (yes, it's that simple). To get the best of both worlds, dual boot (we can help you with that if you're having difficulty ).
It's entirely up to you though. There are advantages and there are disadvantages for choosing one over another. But, there is a learning curve to Linux. It isn't like Windows and you'll just be asking yourself for a recipe for disaster if you just go straight in and expect it to be the same.
man i almost crapped myself the first time i installed ubu i did it without anyones help and the first time i did it i did what u said and restarted with the dvd then hit escape for options then somehow crashed my system it seriously took 2hrs for my computer to restore its self after that one but thankfully it did. once it fully booted again i just popped the dvd into the tray and ran wubi installer on my desktop and i was done in about 5min i was seriously punching myself on that one lol.
also if u dont have any blank dvds laying around im pretty sure you can use daemon tools to mount the iso if your installing inside windows like i did.
If you have to ask then I suggest Windows 7 (if you have sufficient hardware). If you're interested in getting to know Linux then Ubuntu, Mint or any other variation of Ubuntu would be best. Granted there are better distros out there but they require a fair bit of knowledge.
Someone suggested Arch to a noob!?! Why not Slackware??
I'm running Lubuntu on an old machine only because XP is too heavy for it. Bottom line as a Desktop I still like Windows (let the hazing begin...)

just out of curiosity has anyone got tethering to work on ubu 11.0.4 because for me itll recognize the ssid but will never connect to it usb tether works fine though.

Hi, everyone has his/her own taste of OSs (and any other things ), so I suggest you should answer by yourself.
In my oppinion, there no bug in Ubuntu. One difficult thing when using Ubuntu is: it cannot run our Windows software (for instance: MS Office, IDM, WinRar, etc)
You can try Ubuntu by use Live CD (download from ubuntu.com) or install it in dual mode. This way you can use Ubuntu w/u effecting your Win 7.

Hey guys i am new in these parts of the wood so i am sorry if my question has been asked a lot before and or is silly. Never the less here we go.
So i have been contenplating buying a tab of some sorts, maybe the new Samsung, however I am not sure it would be something I need. Due to the lack off computing power I have been forced to consider laptops instead, but an idea came to me. What if i can link the pad to my PC at home. I can wright my code with the pad when i am at school and just send it home for computing.
What i would like:
Able to control my computer as if i was home
Easy to use and set up
Safe
Not uber expensive
What i have
A good internet connection at both ends
Win7
Programs i need to run include
Matlab
Maple
Latex complicator
C++ editor(Code blocks)
CMD(Not necessary, but would help)
I know there are a lot of programs and that allows you to control your PC, however i am not very experienced in this kinda stuff so i need help choosing the one that is best for me. I am able to pay as long as it is not to darn expensive. Hope some off you can help me, it would be appreciated!

Hi all, I'm new to the android tablet. I have had an ipad up until 3 weeks ago when my wife had hers stolen so now she has mine and im trying to see how android works out.
Anywayi teach a class once a week and i down load powerpoint presentations for my class. On the Ipad i just run them in keynotes and al the animations and everythng just work fine. I have tried all the office programs i can find and none of them play the powerpoints. They let you vew the slides but dont really run the presentations. Some of them dont even show the slidesin the right colors and the textis not even viewable.
Does any one have any ideas?
I can take the same file and it works great even after conversion on the ipad. I really want this to work or i will end up going back to apple and i would rather not.
Well, they all play the powerpoint. You can start by telling me which one you want to use. I'll tell you how to play it.
I highly recommend office suit pro.
Polaris, the one that comes with it for free, also plays it quite well.
How do I know this? I've done a few presentations with the office apps.
That said, it is my experience that ipad users are completely lost when they try to use android tablets. It's not worth the headache. You should have stuck with the ipad. Android is designed more for flexibility and having options. Instead of having 1 button to do something, you now have 10 buttons. If you're not used to having options, it really is a pain in the butt.
By the way, I've bought all the office apps available.

ok I'm not lost using the Android. I am a software engineer I have been building and programing computers for 25 years. The Ipad was my first apple product sence my Apple 2e in the early 80's. I have rooted my android phones and put new roms on them and have rooted and over clocked my transformer so I think I'm qualified to use it.
I know the office apps out there will play powerpoint presentations but they play them as slide shows and do not play the animations. If a slide has multiple pictures on it that come and go they just stack them all in right away and show the last one.

They dow have a PDF version of it on there too but so far when I try the PDF version it is super laggy and hard to work with. Also they do not always have the pdf version.
Like I said these run perfect on my ipad but I would rather use my TF.

I forgot, make sure you look at it on a PC because the android viewer like the mess up the colors and fonts to and make them hard to read.

Look, I didn't assume you didn't know anything. My mentor, a leading scientist in concrete engineering, regularly asks me for help with his computing needs. Not knowing how to operate a device says nothing about a person's abilities.
That's why I suggested you stick with the ipad. It's a universal device.
At this point in time, android tablet platform is very much like the early days of linux OS. Back then, there wer3 kinds of people who used linux: (1) the programmers and developers who created and maintained the various linux distros, (2) the modders and enthusiasts who liked to push some boundaries, and (3) the people who went into it thinking they could use it as a windows replacement and ended up going bald by pulling their hair out.
I'm a minimalist. My powerpoint slides almost never contain animations. I think it's just a distraction.
Anyway, I'll take a look at your file there and tell you what I find out. Since I have all the office apps for android, so I'll it with all of them.

I tried it on both Docs to Go and Polaris, but neither of them showed the animations. To be honest, I don't believe animations should be used in presentations, but that aside I have no idea what program to use then.
Well, my thought is to convert it to flash.
I currently do not have access to my TF. Someone is using it hooked up to the TV to watch movies.
Brieflet can convert powerpoint files, I don't know if it keeps the animation, but it's worth trying, I guess.
Ok... I've just bought it, I'll tell you soon how it deals with ppt.

Ok I've just tested with brieflet the powerpoint presentation you mentioned earlier : no animations. You can only have animation between two successive slides, configurable inside brieflet parameters.
If you want to keep your animation, you have to create two different slides when you just have to create one with ppt : for instance the first slide
with no image, and the second slide, same as the first slide plus your image. Since brieflet can fade between two slides following each other, it would work.
I tried also your ppt with quickoffice pro hd (not the latest version though, but the 4.5.15), and same story, no animation.

i get your point 100 % because right now i'm facing the same problem like yours and next week i have already do my presentation and it killing me softly that all the animation, hyperlink than i edit not even work either in : Doctogo, Polaris and all the stupid program.
really need BIG ADVICE for this case.

Something to keep in mind, Microsoft and Apple worked together to bring MS Office to Mac, and most likely iPad/iPhone/iPod. I Microsoft and Apple hate Android and have not shared any of the MS Office secrets therefore every office app for Android has had to reverse engineer the formats and that is not easy. This is why none of them produce 100% compatible results. If you create a new document in a native Android office app I am confident it will do so you ask it to, but to expect it to perfectly replicate a closed source suite's results is inane. Perhaps one day big businesses will all play nicely with each other, but not today.

I'm looking for a new tablet the idea is to have a linux based environment as the main ui, usage will mostly be web browsing media playback and file management the occasional linux program.
why? short version I want a desktop touch experience somewhat similar to what I get out of my windows 8 tablet but without the Microsoft part.
one method I have seen seems to be the chroot ubunto running on top on android and I was wondering if anyone could help with a few questions please?
1/is it possible to use without needing VNC? (not a fan of having to vnc into the local desktop)
2/any performance hits running a linux system on top of an android one? (other than vnc)
3/its running on top of android so it should have full hardware support with any device right? it isn't going to use the touch screen as a track pad right?
4/recommend any devices I might have luck with? looking around maybe $70ish price range with supported rooting/modding.
5/is it actually there? I mean does it work? Im going to assume if it could be done people (someone at least) would be doing it already ?

after many days *cough* 10 minute sections where I had nothing better todo* I messed around and finally got the x server working.
it isn't accelerated (and stopped working after I tried to change base distro)
the x wrapper felt slower than VNC.
the dpi is kind of messed up the UI isn't made for it.
the touch screen works like a track pad (urg)
the keyboard erm where is the keyboard? (don't answer that)
for some reason they went and put this really neat tilt thing that moves the mouse around but lacks other things(acceleration?)
I could maybe pass as a really slow desktop if it were hooked upto a usb hub keyboard mouse and hd screen.
I still think it is an amazing feat it just isn't there. it is not usable for day to day tasks, install it for fun with vnc to show your friends you have "linux" installed on your tablet/phone, use it to run scripts / tools on the go you wouldn't normally have access to but that's about the extent to its usefulness, you aren't going to be playing games in it, doing heavy browsing streaming video or even playing sound.
tldr I got no feedback from anyone with experience but from what I gather it isn't going to replace android os on your tablet.
guess I will probably look for a tablet that runs linux native or suck it up and get a vanilla droid tablet and forget about switching out the UI/OS this way
