Hi,
I have recently upgraded my XDA Orbit 2 to the new UK O2 Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM and everything seems ok excpet for an issue I am having with Sprite Backup. Was wondering if anyone else was having similar issues.
I'm running the full and latest version of Sprite Backup 6.5 which claims to be WM6.1 capable and it works fine until I install SPB Pocket Plus and SPB Diary. When these are on my device Sprite Backup will just hang at the early stage of backup and the device has to be soft-reset. This problem did not occur before I upgraded to WM 6.1.
I appreciate that SPB Diary and Pocket Plus don't claim to be 6.1 compatible yet but they seem to work fine in their own right. The only issue is that I cannot backup my device with them installed.
Any ideas?
Tom
Mystery
Having tried two hard-resets and rebuilds, each of which resulted in the behaviour described in the post (i.e. Sprite not working) I have tried again and it now seems to work fine.
Only thing I can think of that might be different is installation order but can't see why this would make a difference. Any way it seems to work now so all is well.
Would still be interested if anyone else has had this issue and found the actual cause.
I had an issue with sprite backup, similar to what you described.
How i solved it was I switched to spb backup
I also use spb diary, but not pocket plus.
Does that work?
Sprite failed me again last night. Having thought the problem was fixed I scheduled a backup for last night only to come down this morning to find the backup had been hung for 3 hours resulting in a nearly flat battery as the backlight stays on throughout! Looks like problem is still there after all!
Only switched to Sprite from SPB a year or so ago as only time I ever needed to restore from backup SPB failed me. Tried a few tests after rebuilding and got reliable restores from Sprite but never from SPB.
Haven't tried SPB Backup version 2.x though so assume it might work better now. Given that Sprite doesn't seem to work on my Config it can't work any worse.

Hi experts. I am desperately seeking some guidance from an experienced user. I have been struggling with my new Jamin for 2 weeks and I have had to do more hard resets in those two weeks than I did on my old Palm PDA's in 5 years. So I realise I need some backup software that saves the whole of my memory, so that I can do a simple & relatively quick restore. What utilities do you recommend I consider?
Sprite Backup.
I recommend SpB Backup
thank you very much for your recommendations. I will try the spb backup and see how that goes.
It's Sprite for me. I've heard of some issues with Spb but who knows. I'd investigate why so many hard resets. I've had my device for 4 months and haven't done one - and yes, I do mess with it and instal loads of software all the time. Perhaps it's because I've got Sprite !!! On my previous device I had one hard reset and Sprite re-installed EVERYTHING to precisely as it was.
back up soft
I use also sprite back up, I back my device on the sd card and also at my desktop.
SPB Backup
I use SPB and have done full recoveries and restores in a totally perfect fashion from it.
1 hard reset, 5 minutes later, device restored, resync for data since last backup and done.
perfect.
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone know a good OS backup software for wm6, I have always used spb backup with wm5 faria's but now that i'm on explorer 1.1 I notice whenever I try to backup i always have error logs and when I restore the file the os run slows as ever, I really dont' think spb backup is very compatible with wm6, and yes I have the newest version too. Any suggestions? or anyone that use a different soft and doesn't run into any problem with restoring in wm6 I would like to know your input, thanxs.
I personally use Sprite, but I just acquired SK Tools and I haven't used the built-in backup utility yet. My restorations are not laggy, but I do get a few errors.
I'm not really sure that there's a utility built for any WM6 devices at this point, so you may want to hold off until an updated utility is offered and make your decision then.
Normally i'm using spb backup 1.5.5. But everytime I make a backup an error is reported. When restoring this backup no problems occure. So it should be a slip the program or so. I also used Sunny Soft backupmanager 4.0. This isn't giving any problems or errors, the only thing is it makes three restore files in stead of one restore file of spb.
So I'm back to spb, it still works great even with an error report.

Do a google search for that error and you'll find a registry fix to correct it. Something about couldn't lock compimeh.dat or something similar I'll bet. Has to do with WM6, but it isn't anything vital to worry about (as I understand it). Just frustrating if you want to do nightly automatic backups.
I´m using SKTools and did a backup two times - on NotTooSmart vanilla and Xplore 1.1.
Everytime after backup I coudn´t run any message Program. No SMS, no Email, nothing. Just when I hit message in Start - Programs the wizard goes back to today. So I stoped making backups.
SOmetime I had problems to get ActiveSnc connecting after backup.
So just keep on reinstalling everything. Clean - Fast - und everytime some new apps.
Backup Tools - my order
Having tested them all, several times, below my personal ordering:
1. Sunnysoft Backup Manager Ver 4.02
2. SKTools
3. Spb Backup
4. Sprite
Cheers

I'd be curious on why you order them this way. What reasons do you feel make one better than the other?
I'm not questioning your order, I'm just curious why SunnySoft's is your number one (I've never used it so would like to know if I'm missing something).
curious why no one has metionen PIM BACKUP?---->1.5
Backs up all personal information except the sistem files (registry)

Yes thats right. I said I stoped using backup - that´s not right. I use PIM-Backup.
But there for you have to install everything after hardreset. Some people prefer just restore after a hardreset. For me I always had problems with fullbackup - so I only use PIM backup.

Because Sunnysoft is the ONLY ONE, that has never failed on me.
After every HR (e.g. after flash, but only when reloading a backup is apppropriate), I use all 4 programs for test purposes.
Just a hobby, ain't it ?

I use restoring by PIM backup, when I did a hardreset without able to sync to my PC. When I´m home again, I sync just from PC to device and say "delete on device" So I do not have dublikates.

Hello all,
Just a quicky:
What is the best way to backup (and restore) your WM phone?
Imagine that you do an hard reset, and you want to make all the programs, files, etc return to your mobile. Even the same wallpaper
Is this possible?
Cheers and thanks
Luis
Many (Spb Backup etc.. google it) but I prefer save only PIM data because:
1- Make HR to solve SW problems: if I restore all the problems could come back
2- Make HR because changing ROM: some settings couldn't be right for new ROM

+1 on Spb Backup.
I used the trial version and then purchased the software.
Everything is backed up on my pc ready to restore if need be.
Really nice software. Easy to use.
I also backed up my files to my internal storage on my Diamond which is all ready to restore if need be.
The need came up the other day when my Diamond did a surprise hard reset after removing a program.
I did a restore from internal storage and everything came back except 6 speed dials which took a couple of minutes to input.
Just to thank you both.
I did tried it and it works great.
Glad to hear it is working for you
Im a newcomer but i know a bit. Do try SPB Clone. I have used the demo version, but the problem in demo version is that you get a pop-up every half an hour reminding you to buy a full version. But otherwise its a great software. Specially for your needs where you even want the same wallpaper.
After two weeks... and several soft resents and only two hard resets... I now have everything set up and working well and smooth on my TP2 (Sprint). All my email, preferences and setting are exactly what I want themn to be.
My question is. What is the best way to back ALL of this up. Is there a programs that can save this 'state' and created a sort of restore point; so that is everything goes kablooey, I can get the device back to this exact state easily? Freeware preferable, but not a must.
I know I am noob, but I am trying to learn so thanks. It was a long time coming and WinMo 6.1 is a so different to me that the Palm system I was using until now.
Please let me know... It is greatly appreciated.
Matt
As far as I know, you have 5 options
1) PIM Backup - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
FREE
Really good at backing up ALL your text messages, contacts, appointments, etc. It can run automatically if desired. I've had issues when trying to restore emails and email accounts to my phone, but those aren't that hard to setup without it.
2)Microsoft MyPhone - http://sn1-p3.myphone.microsoft.com/mkweb/Start.po
FREE
Service works well. It backs up your info (Text, contacts, appointments, email) to the "cloud". It will even backup your files too, like photos and songs. You can also have this run on a schedule as well. Also has tools to locate your phone if you lose it (GPS location, make your phone rings even if it's on silent) but you gotta pay for them.
3) Flexilis Mobile - https://beta.flexilis.com/
FREE
Same as Microsoft MyPhone, but it's all free. They're still working on the GPS location function for the TP2, however their "scream" function is pretty cool, even works of the phone is set to silent too.
EDIT: forgot to mention, I wouldn't advise setting up the firewall on this program, I've had issues when trying to connect to ANY wifi spot (even my home's) when the firewall is on.
4)SPB Backup - http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
$24.95
Haven't actually tried this one but from the looks of it, it can backup "System Data" which I think means system preferences.
5) Resco Backup - http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/backup/
$19.99
Looks like it will backup EVERYTHING, the new version will also upload your backup to the FTP server of your choice. Haven't tried this one yet either
Also I know there is a program floating around the Rhodium forums that will re-installed ALL your programs. I forgot the link though.
I use MS MyPhone and SPB Backup... SPB is pretty easy to use, but so is MyPhone, but with MyPhone there have been some glitches in the past (which I experianced, like the contact restore issue) but those seem to be resolved now at least ( I know I havent had the issue again since getting the new version). SPB costs money, MyPhone does not. Both are simple, and easy to use. I would suggest trying them all, find the one you like best and stick with it.
I use SunnySoft BackupManager 4.x.
This software will restore you to whatever point in time it was when you did the backup. This software can be customized to backup the whole device or just parts of it.
I tried SPB on previous winmo phones and did not like it.
I also have had no issues with getting the software from 1 phone to the other. All it took was an email with my new phones key sent to them to get a new code for the new phone.
+1 for SPB its worth the money backs up and saves everything.
Sprite Backup isn't bad. Used it a lot on my MotoQ9c with no issues.

Yeah, just make sure you use the same version for restore as you did while backing up. Tried to restore my roommates palm treo (a couple years ago) and the program didn't want to because it said that the version I backed up with was to old.
+1 on SPB Backup. And when they say it backs up everything, they mean everything. Data, apps, the works. Great program and well worth the money IMHO.
I've tried Sprite Backup but it gave me problems. I tried doing a backup, reflashed my ROM, and when I tried to restore the file wouldn't work. All my data was gone. So -10 for Sprite Backup.
Sprite works for me
I've used Sprite on my Wizard and on my Fuze/Raphael.
This is the copy I'm using now, copied from my Fuze, and it is working fine:
http://www.mediafire.com/?jnxk4wzojh3
One thing you might find is that it usually works best to restore to a device that is factory fresh, i.e. hard reset to factory specs, or to your base ROM whatever that is. If you have a stock ROM you may get an error when you try to run the restore file directly.
I keep a copy of the Sprite Backup.CAB on my storage card, and load it after the hard reset, then use it to open the backup file.
If you have a cooked ROM you probably can just run the exe backup file.

I am think about this... but I have not the first clue on how to flash a new ROM, where to find one that is right... is there a faq on this whole process.
I just want a nice stable system...
My vote is with SPB backup.
It makes backups on schedule, I do one every day, then automatically copies the backups to my desktop when I connect it by activesync.
Smooth, reliable, I've restored 1/2 a dozen times without a problem.
Worth the money.
Hi Everyone.
Backup is very big problem for me...
I just need a best correct backup.
Please tell something if you know about wich is the best backup soft?
I'm looking on SPB Backup and Resco Backup...
If you know another just tell please.
The best app is spirit Backup
^ or even 'Sprite back-up'
SPB Backup is the best. It´s always without any issues to recover my data

There is a lot of advantages using SPB Backup, instead of Microsoft Software?
Thanks

With "My Phone" you can:
* Back up your phone automatically
* Share photos on your favorite social networking sites
* Access your contacts, text messages and more online for free
* Locate your lost phone
@ myphone.microsoft.com/mkweb/Start.po?lc=1046&mkt
I have 200Mb on my account.

but you cannot backup your operating system. It´s only for backup your data. Even if it does it´s work very well, it´s only a part of the functions that real Backup software provides
With spb backup and resco backup i had problems on custom roms.
Only "SK tools" help me SK tools - is the best backup program.
+1 for SPB Backup
Had troubles with both Sprite and Resco. Never with SPB. I using it since WM2003
SPB Backup the best!
SPB Backup & SK Tools sucks
SPB do not stop properly all HTC processes. The problem has being acnowledged by SPB. The work arround is to disable Sense, kill startup folder and reboot before restore.
My HD2 hangs on SKtools scheduled backups.
Now I'm experimenting with Resco
+1 for SPB Backup
I use it since my first WM2003 HTC Device without any problems.
never experienced problems with SPB, restored dozens of times on official and custom ROMs on different devices.
I used to Resco backup on my Blackstone, it worked fine, but when upgraded to Leo I cannot successfully restore my settings. So I moved to SPB witch is fine....
I use Sprite Backup, never had a problem. It's the only application who really closes all processes before backup.
There is only a small transparency problem with the icons on the HD2 screen i've never seen on other devices, but the job is done perfectly anyway.
I had problems in the past with Spb and Resco.
Only SPB Backup!
one advantage of SPB Backup (over Sprite) is addintional app called 'SPBBackupUnpack' which allows you to unpack your backup (files and full registry) on your PC
