I've noticed many users asking how to sync their IE/Firefox bookmarks on their PC with the Opera Browser included in the latest devices. I decided to look into it a bit and see if I could find a quick and easy way of doing it. First of all there is no way to Sync with the device because ActiveSync/WMDC only supports IE Bookmarks and of course Microsoft will neve aknowledge the existence of any other browser.
OK, so the idea is pretty simple. We convert our bookmarks from whatever browser we use, into Opera browser format and then we move them to the device:
1. First step is to download this very nice, open source, and free programme called BookMarkBridge (http://bookmarkbridge.sourceforge.net/downloads.html) and install it on your PC.
2. Open up the application:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You will notice it contains a source browser section and a destination browser section.
3. If the browser you wish to use is not on the list, simply click on Add in the corresponding section to add it. Needless to say that if you want to remove a browser from the list, you have to select it and click on delete:
In the exaple below I have selected Firefox as my source and Opera as my destination browser.
4. Click on the settings button on the program's main page to change the settings for each browser. There you will be able to modify the bookmark file paths.
You do not need to have Opera installed on your machine to make this work. Simply create a new text document in the folder of your choice and rename it to Opera6.adr. Then simply select this file as the Opera bookmark File.
You will also notice that right underneath the bookmark file path is an option that will prevent this file from being edited. What this program actually does is combine/merge the bookmark files. First it will read all bookmarks contained in the source browsers and then combine them in one list. It will then save that list in the correct format in the destination browser's bookmark file. For example, if the source browsers are IE and Firefox and Opera is the destination, it will create an Opera6.adr (in the select path) that will include the bookmarks from both browsers.
5. Clicking on the View button on the program's main page, you can see a list of the bookmarks contained in the source browsers and you can select to ignore the ones you don't want moved to the destination browser.
6. Last but not list, clicking on Merge will begin the process. Once completed, all you need to do it take the Opera6.adr from the folder you selected in the settings, and copy it to the \windows\Opera9 folder in your device.
An alternative application:
vbBKM (BookMark Manager) Not hard to use either, includes import and export features.
This is GREAT info, preparing to get my in-transit XPERIA X1 all synced up, and getting my Firefox bookmarks into Opera was one of my to-do's! Thank you!
You're welcome
Question: so I exported my bookmarks into the adr file, and I see the existing adr in the /Windows directory (there is no Opera folder...), but it doesn't let me delete it. How do I go about replacing the file itself?
IF this is the opera addressbook file, you could copy the one you created on your PC to the storage card and use either Resco Explorer or Total Commander to overwrite the file (in case it doesn't allow you to do so with the built in File Explorer).
Ah, I was copying to the wrong location.
There's an opera6.adr file in \\Application Data\Opera -- THAT's where it goes.
But now I'm seeing only the first three bookmark folders I had, and they are being duplicated twice. The rest of the folders are missing -- if I open the adr file on my PC using notepad I see all the bookmarks are there, but the device isn't showing them.
Does Opera have some kind of limitation as to how many directories can be displayed?
I honestly can't tell you. I noticed a problem like the one you're describing when I was trying out different converters. I've tested the ones above on my HTC Diamond. Which device are you using?
Xperia X1.
I opened up the opera6.adr that the browser was creating, not the one the converter was creating, and noticed it looked very different... I dont think these apps are exporting into a format Opera Mobile is looking for?
Well if they weren't would it be working on my Diamond? Can you tell me which version of Opera you are using? Which converter did you use? Is there any chance you could send me the adr file to check it on my HTC?
Opera 9.5, build 2141 - the built-in Xperia version
I tried this with both converters.

joannaex - thanks for posting this, I've been looking for a way of doing this too, but had similar trouble to matthewf01.
I had a look at the file the bookmark bridge generated and compared it to the original one from my Diamond and there is a difference in the file format. I got it working in the end my manually editing the file, from memory (at work now, was doing this at home) there were a couple of missing attributes ID and CREATED and rather than URL= it had URL== with a double equals sign, same was true of the other attributes.
I keen to have this automated, so I might crack open the Bookmark Bridge source (it's on Sourceforge) and add a new option for the Opera browser that's on the Diamond.
Joannaex - now idea how it works on yours? maybe you have a different ROM and hence a different version of Opera?
I have the original Shipped 1.93 ROM. I will try and do some tests on the Touch 3G and HD and report back.
hello
i managed to put it on my x1
you need to install opera 9 on your pc
import bookmarks from in my case mozila to opera save it anywhere
copy/replace that file to app/opera on your mobile
that's it
job done
Good luck

I have the EXACT problem too!! I can only see one folder and it's duplicated 4 times. I don't see my other bookmarks at all. When i go into the folder, i can only see "SOME" of the boomarks in it, e.g. if i have a list of 100 bookmarked links in it, i can only see about say 30 or 40.
I'm using HTC Touch Pro running Windows Mobile 6.1 and running Opera 9.5 build 15306.
I haven't done any modding or hacking to my phone at all, everything is running at stock or default.
ya i was looking for some info like this...

The desktop version of Opera is able to import its Bookmarks from IE's Favorites, which are stored in file 'Opera6.adr' at 'C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Applications Data\Opera\Opera\profile" on your PC. Just copy this file to the Opera directory in your PPC. You see, I don't have Opera Mini installed on my 9502, but I think it should work.
If you want PIE's Favorites instead, just sync them with your PC, prior to importing Opera's Bookmarks.
Just my 2 cents..Cheers!

In addition, if you are using the official non-branded version like Opera Mobile 9.51B2 or the latest 9.7B1, it has the buildin function to Import PIE Favorites on First Launch. In case you want to syncronize after first launch, in opera address bar, type: opera:config and hit enter, then in the config page tap Install, then in the extended list, check the box for 'Browser First Time Launch', then hit Save. After exit & relaunch Opera, the bookmarks from PIE will be syncronized.
Some other way is to use Opera Link.

That's what I had to do to get it working after many trials with many bookmark syncing tools but nothing worked, in the end I opened up the 2 bookmark files (the one the tool generated and the one opera mobile was using initially) and compared format and did alot of find/replace, but it worked it end
I have a different problem.
I choose Firefox as source browser -> OK
than I click on "View bookmarks in source browsers" and I see non of my bookmarks but several default bookmarks from that browser?!?
Can anybody help?

Does anyone know where Opera mobile 9.5 stores bookmarks?
If I remember well is the file opera6
Sorry for my english
Ciao
\Windows\Opera9\fake\*****\oktoberfest\opera6.adr
On the Diamond there is a \Windows\Opera9 but none of the sub-directories cache, help, images, locale, secure, Settings, skin, styles, widgets look possible for bookmarks.
I was basically hoping to edit the default bookmarks directly (from windows), rather than enter each address and then save to favourites.
You can synchronise for favorites with your desktop.
Then import these Internet Explorer favorites into Opera with the "File-->Import and Export" menu. Now you can pick this opera6.adr from your desktop, and put it on your Diamond into "\windows\opera9\".
Another way of doing it is to use link.opera.com
Alas opera mobile doesn't support syncing wth it, but there is a workaround that's pretty easy.
Setup your bookmarks in opera on the desktop, (mac or pc or *nix or whatever) then set up the link, you'll need to sign up first..
Go to link.opera.com in opera mobile, sign in and when the page has loaded save it.
open the saved page and set it as a bookmark (I use the saved speedial page as my homepage in opera mobile).
It's a workaround, but it works and is easy to do, if you need to reflash your device and forget your bookmarks (as if :cough) then you can get them from opera link..
The reason for saving the page? It saves a bit of data transfer and time.
A Solution!
Worked For Me. To Get All Internet Explorer Bookmarks, First Install The Official Beta Off The Website(opera.com) or find opera6.adr from the original opera file that was already on your phone.
Install The Newest Build You Desire, Copy The "opera6.adr" from the original file and paste into the new builds file. Fire opera up and should be there. worked for me! Try It. If my directions were confusing, please forgive me. lol Its what i did tho.
could you post that file so i dont have to uninstall/reinstall.
Extra Help! =]
I Have Diamond Opera Installed On Device Memory.
I Downloaded This Build http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401643 But Any Should Work. So For My Example We Will Use This One.
Download Either QVGA Or VGA 2392 Or The SD Version. Its Up To You If You Want To Install On Device Memory Or Memory Card (SD).
If Your Device Originally Had Opera Mobile Of Any Version On It, Then Locate The Opera Folder. Mine Is "My Device/Application Data/Opera."
If You Didn't Have A Opera Browser On Your Phone Then Look Below For A Different Solution. Find The opera6.adr File Or It Will Just Say "opera6" On Your Device. Copy It And If You Installed Onto Device Memory Go To "My Device/Windows/Opera9" And Paste It. If You Installed Onto Memory Card Paste It In "My Device/Staorage Card/Program Files/Opera9" There You Go! That Simple!
If Your Device Didn't Originally Have Opera Of Any Version On It, Download This: http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/?man=Windows+Mobile+5.0+Pocket+PC&ver=9.51b2&heading=Windows%20Mobile%205/6%20Pocket%20PC&img=/bitmaps/products/mobile/platform/951b2.gif&extra=Touchscreen-based%20devices%20only.%20Last%20updated:%2020.10.2008
Install Onto Device Or Memory Card. Launch It. Bookmarks Should Be In There. Exit. Then Go To The Installed Location. For Devices Memory The File Should Be In "My Device/Program Files/Opera 9.5 Beta" And For Memory Card It Should Be In My Device/Storage Card/Program Files/Opera 9.5 Beta Aswell. Locate The opera6.adr File Or On Your Device It Will Just Show "opera6". Copy It And Paste Into The "Opera9" File (Assuming You Have Already Installed The Build You Desire) Which Is Located "My Device/Windows/Opera9" If Installed On Device Memory And For Storage Card The Location Is "My Device/Storage Card/Program Files/Opera9." Then Uninstall The Beta Version Load Up Your New Build And That Should Be It!
Hope It Works! And If Any Questions, Ill Try To Help.

Wouldnt Work If I Gave You My "opera6" file. You Would Get My Bookmarks On Your Opera Browser. Just Follow The "Extra Help" I Posted Before This Post.

install opera10 on your desktop pc..
import firefox or ie bookmarks..
edit your bookmarks..forexam. del or add
and then export bookmarks as bookmarks.adr
edit name as opera6.adr
copy it "windows\opera9" and overwrite..
Guys,
I have a load of internet shortcuts (bookmarks) on my PPC under Windows\Favorites which are read by PIE and are displayed on QuickMenu however!...
When I try and run one of these files and choose either PIE or Opera, I get in the address bar (url) the location of the file and not the website it supposedly points to.
If I choose the favorite from within PIE then all is well. Strange!!!
I've been looking for an answer for a while now and am drawing a blank.
Please someone help. I'm starting to get a headache
Oh, I should probably tell you I have WM6.1 Pro (HTC Touch HD).
Thanks
Wayne
Windows Mobile doesn't read ".url" file naively. The files you are messing with are resourse files for the browsers (the browsers pull information from the file, you can't push the information by clicking them) There are programs that open your 'internet favorites" (m2d, ultimate launch, and "Interent link launcher")
Thanks for the reply joel2009!
Is there an app that I can install that can handle the .url file type and run the browser with the url from the file?
Anyone able to answer this?...
quickmenu loads as favorites, the contents of the favorites folder inside the windows directory. Now if I delete this favorites folder from the windows directory, on Quickmenu, all I'm left with under favorites is a few Opera shortcuts that load Opera and do work.
Any ideas where these Opera favorites are found so I can manually add to this list?
Thanks for your help!
Wayne
interent link launcher uses mortsript to open internet link files (i'm not sure of the extension, i haven't had time to try it yet)
On the opera favorites, opera asks you where you want to save the bookmark file too when you create one.
Come on guys.....
I've found this and if you go down the list and find \urlfile\Shell\Open\Command : REG_SZ it shows the necessary registry entry that is needed to run a url file from explorer and when run this file opens within IE correctly.
There must be a command switch that follows OPERA9.EXE or OPERAL.EXE that interprets the file correctly and opens the web page.
For now I've got it set to open files in to IE. Not great but nearly what I want.
(I posted about this last night, but it got lost -- apologies if the old one comes back and I look like I've posted twice.)
I worked out a solution to this problem, and posted it up at ppcgeeks. You have to install mortscript, but otherwise it's not too bad, and has been working flawlessly for me.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=62816
Hope it helps.
I have SKTools, Total Commander, and Registry Key Editors.
I tried setting up file associations to open URL files, but it doesn't work. Only PIE opens the URL files by default.
Can I get the instructions to open URL files with Opera Browser?
Bump, please help me.
This is my 1st bump.
Bump, please help me.
This is my 2nd bump.
As far as I know you can set up thatparameters typing opera:config on your device
Hope it helped,
So do you mean the file associations parameters should be "opera:config"?
URL associations are set up by the app you're using.
if opera is defined as your default browser any url you'll open will automatically pop opera up.
Okay, I am using File Explorer and Total Commander. I want to Open .url files with Opera, it opens with PIE instead.
How do I open it?
What is a "default calendar"?
When I set URL file association for Total Commander, the link does not go online, instead it brings me to an error page. Under the URL box in Opera Browser, it would not show www.google.com, instead it would show something like: storage card/%mystuff/%20favorite links
So if I copied a google.com url into my phone storage card, I want to open it and GO ONLINE with Opera Browser NOT PIE. How do i do this?
PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE ATTACHMENT, SO YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT KIND OF FILE I AM TALKING ABOUT.
meant browser.. not calendar.

I used Xperia Tweak to setup Opera Browser as my default browser, I still open google.url and it opens with PIE.
My basic file program is Total Commander.
BTW I am not talking about Microsoft Windows. I am talkin about Windows Mobile, and the phone I use is the Xperia X1.
Why is everyone giving me confusing answers. I'm getting more and more confused.
I have looked extremely hard for file associations for opera browser, and this is what i got:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1714441
I do not use morthscript though, and I'm afraid digging into will cause me to factory reset my phone again, and I have rest my phone 10 times already.
Please, tell me if there is any other way to Open URLs via Opera Browser.
I have this program which i downloaded ages ago. I cant remember where i got it from, so im just uploading it myself. Just to clarify, this is NOT my program.
You know how on a pc, you can right click and select "Open with"?
Well, this cab brings that to pocket pc's
Hope it helps
Yeah this is exactly what I was looking for. The thread link from one of my posts also talks about "open with" method. But I don't want to use mortscript.
If your cab is not going to work, I guess I will give up searching for a solution.
Anyways thanks, you are my miracle!.
Here is an update:
Nope... it opens Opera Browser but than it doesn't go to the website (the same exact thing happens if I set file associations for Opera, and the same exact thing still happens if I use the registry editor to change association values, xperia tweak doesn't work, total commander built in file associations doesn't work, sk tools file associations doesn't work either).
I GIVE UP
Registry settings
Hi
Registry settings where file defaults are is:
Hot Key Classes Root.
In this directory there are hundreds (or more) keys relating to all the different file extensions that are associated with programmes, etc. You need to look for:
.htm
.html
htmfile
htmlfile
There may be others. Basically if these keys exist the values you're looking for are the ones with the browser executable listed in them, for example opera9.exe/operaL.exe, iexplore.exe.
I hope that helps

as i see it you ar not talking of .htm or .html files.
You are talking off .url File's
normaly (xp) they are handled by the protocol handler
in wm6.1 there is no such thing and it is directly handeled by iexplore
opera wil not handle these i gues
you need to find a app that reads the urlfile an launh the app with the correct parrameters
you also need this
\hkcr\http,URL Protocol,
\hkcr\http\shell\open\command, ,"\windows\operaL.exe" %1
\hkcr\https,URL Protocol,
\hkcr\https\shell\open\command, ,"\windows\operaL.exe" %1
or you can try http://sourceforge.net/projects/jzsmartmort
(I posted about this last night, but the message got lost in some backup snafu. So I'll post it again. Apologies if they both end up here.)
I hacked together a solution to this problem, and posted it at ppcgeeks.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=62816
It involves installing Mortscript, and having it handle passing the links to Opera. Seems to be working perfectly for me so far. Hopefully my instructions are not too convoluted. Enjoy.
Hey all
I have been fiddling around for the last few days trying to add some internet favourites via the registry to show up in the internet tab on Manila2D. I know it can be done by simply adding them to your favourites once Opera is loaded but I want to be able to add them back quickly after a reflash. I have looked around various forum and done searches but all I can find is how to add program shortcuts which isnt what I want to do.
Recap: I want to edit the registry (HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila2D\InternetWidget\customized) to add internet favourites below the main link and youtube plugin.
Thanks

Home Page only
Hi there.
I only managed to change the home page to about:blank instead of the default google
HKLM\\Software\HTC\Manila2D\InternetWidget\Customized\BannerURL
HKLM\\Software\Opera\Defaults\HomepageURL
I see under
"HKLM\\Software\HTC\Manila2D\InternetWidget\Customized\0" there're place to put in the favorites. Under it there're 5 values, which currently is YouTube.
My deduction is "0" is for first Fav, and then you can add 1, etc. I'm not sure though, now rushing out of office, maybe later I try it out ..

I have my Home Page set in opera and theres no problem to change the default opening page when you click on the world image in the internet tab.
I also know that the "0" folder contains the information to open youtube but when I create a "1" folder and put the banner information in it I still dont see anything (after a soft reset of course). In the folder I have BannerURL, BannerURLText and NoDescription.
If someone has an older Rom (I think the old HyperDragon had a link included to Sakajatis Website) then please export the Internet Widget registry settings and attach them here. Thannks

Create another folder or folders to sequence 1, 2 etc, as you have 0 already. Inside the 1 folder create strings as what is in folder 0, like "customizedTitle, CustomizedURL etc... then add the needed values.
someone I believe in Modaco ( not so certain where though) created cab files that can embed favs in the Internet widget, however if you have the wrong M2d build you will run into problems.
I wonder if you just find a way to back whatever stores the Opera bookmarks up with SASHIMI and then simply run it and reboot, maybe at that point M2D will re-read and organize your bookmarks from there?
Just a thought, based on not having looked into it too deeply.

I actually figured out what had to go in the registry folders by flashing an OLD version of Hyperdragon that I remembered SJ putting his website on the Internet Tab lol. Its as ASFOOR said but you have to make sure the CustomizedCount setting in the Customized folder is the same as the number of links you want to add to your page.

If anyone else is interested (not that anyone ever is but I dont really care haha) I have included my finished Internet Tab and the registry file to add the extra tabs. I exported the registry settings and put them in sashimi so they automatically get imported back after a new flash.

I am! I have been working to add Facebook to the same screen and finally figured it out earlier today. I did it the hard way though, using a Registry editor on my phone. The only thing I did different was point to an application intead of a webpage (similar to the YouTube link) and I pulled the icon from the .exe file. I do like how you shrank the "Launch Browser" section and will do the same thing to my phone.

d'oh! hahahaha! Will do it. Thanks!
I think you can just copy and backup the Opera6.adr file. That has worked for me through several flashes.

Hi, I was wandering how to make the new folders in the customized folder
Thanks
While configuring my new TD2 I got really bored of having to point Opera to my preferred downloads folder on the storage card every time I wanted to download installers. The default settings didn't help, and after some searching I stumbled upon the extra Opera configuration options that can be reached by typing opera:config into the location bar.

Under 'User prefs' I'd like to change
- Cache Directory4
The default value on my TD2 is \Windows\Opera\cache but I think changing that to a cache directory on the storage card would improve my device's performance because of the extra memory available.
- Download Directory
For the same reason I'd like Opera to start any download dialog in the \Storage Card\Temp\ directory.
- Maximum Allowed Tabs
Opera on the TD2 only allows a maximum of two tabs. On my Diamond1 I hardly ever got the 'maximum tabs reached' message, on my TD2 it turns out to be a real hassle. 3 tabs please.
Here's my problem.
Clicking SAVE after changing the above values results in the message Settings Saved in a Javascript warning dialog. However, settings aren't changed. Not even after restarting Opera or even the whole device.
Could this have something to do with the fact that Opera resides in the Windows directory? If so, or if not, what's wrong and how should I go about to have these settings changed?
OK I've got one problem solved. Copying opera.ini from the \windows\opera9\ directory to my computer, editing it and copying it back to the device helped solve the maximum tabs problem. The other options I want to edit aren't available in the ini file though.
Try to find more ini's. They have to be there. Also thanks for telling this, I definetly will use it when I get my phone.
Didn't find more ini's, but... I found out why the settings wouldn't change after editing them in the opera:config page: the lack of an OK button on the TD2 is part of the problem.
The entries in the opera:config page need to be acknowledged by hitting the ENTER button on the soft keyboard. If you just edit them and click SAVE they won't be changed. For that you need to edit - (select all) ENTER - SAVE.
Now I have Opera's cache and downloads directory switched to the memory card. And I have one problem left. The downloads directory path turns out to be the path that Opera uses when you open (in stead of save) mpeg, wmv, pdf etc. files while surfing. You don't open them online, but the files are downloaded to the downloads directory.
So I'm still stuck with the initial problem of the 'Save file' dialog directory. Tips are welcome
To get more tabs type in 'Tabs" in the quick find bar and it will pop up. This is the first thing I did. On my elfin I had changed it to 6 tabs. I currently set the D2 to 9 tabs.
In order for the change to take pace you must exit Opera fromt the menu and not by hitting the X button. Eventhough it doesn't show up in the task manager Opera is just minimized if you hit the X or hold it down.
Sounds good, but where exactly can I find this quick find bar? I tried to type "Tabs" in several places but it just gives me google results...

In the Adress bar type 'Opera:Config' and you will get the page posed in the first post. After that type in 'tabs' where it says quick find. You will not find it maually searching the listed categories so you must search for it.
Enjoy your many added tabs.
Thanks...works.....have added this to my tweeks list

That’s great, thanks!.
I would really like Opera to change "open in new tab" operation.
I want Opera to stay on the current tab and open the new tab in the background. I hate looking at the white empty loading page and then returning to the original page ....

I know its OT, but my Opera doesn't remember history, its really annoying entering every URL everytime, is there something that could be done, maybe through Opera.ini??
Thanks

This is a cool find (opera:config) robinVerdegaal, never saw this one around....thanks....
And you can save it to your Opera Favorites.
Opera's Settings File Explained
Opera settings explained.
I too have the problem of Opera not saving changes to the opera:config section no matter what I try.
My phone is the Touch Pro 2 on Vodafone.
Love the Opera experience as a whole but can't wait for flash support and I desperately need more than 2 tabs!!
Please note that you may require a reboot after you change some Opera settings. This seems to be because Opera is set to run as a background process on the D2 and so to make sure it restarts reboot (which is easily done by switching your phone off and then on again).
The number of TABs increasing for me did not work until I swapped SIM cards! I found this out by accident of course. Maybe try battery and/or SIM card removal but it does work.
If you tap in adress bar "opera:" only you will see more options also ":config" option.
I also have the "not saving" problem. I make changes, press save and it says I may need to restart but no matter what I try it doesnt save the settings.

It doesn't works on my TD2 I,ve changed the settings, than ok and restart Opera (not with the X button), but next time I become only 2 Tabs again
No changes worked on mine using that config editor but when I changed the settings by copying the config.ini off my phone, making the changes and copying it back they work fine, including changing from 2 tabs to six.
Just remember to soft reset after uploading the file to your phone otherwise the changes dont happen!

I was trying to achieve this on my original diamond, but i think this is behaviour that can only be fixed by opera and not .ini or reg tweaks
