I have performed BigStorage and would like to know the reg hack to change the location for ringtones from \windows\rings to \Storage\Rings. I have tried but failed and searching this site has proved fruitless. I sure it can be done and have seen one forum which mentioned doing but not how!!!
here you are DMan
Hkey_current_user\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring
change the Directory from \windows\Rings to \Storage\Rings
Thanks Shams99 but that is the one I thought it was when looking so have changed that but when I then try to add a music file by "right click" and select "set as ring tone" it copies this file to the default \windows\rings. Am I being stupid? please tell me I am so there is a simple answer  but include instructions
I also set this and soft reset just incase!
Can't move rings to storage
I'm having trouble pointing to \Storage Card\Rings as well. I have windows mobile 5.0 k-jam. I modified the registry setting for
HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring and changed the directory from \Windows to \Storage Card. I've confirmed that a Rings folder exists in \Storage Card. When I go in to phone options and try to change the ring tone, it's still looking in to \Windows\Rings for ring tones and not \Storage Card\Rings.
Does anyone know what could be the problem here?
Thanks!
It works for me, did you soft-reset after the registry change?
oltp,
Yes i did a soft reset. I've also verified after the reset the settings in the registry. The changes indeed are there. However, the phone application doesn't show the contents of \Storage Card\Rings\. Instead it still shows the contents of \Windows\Rings\.
Very strange, what's your rom version?
no problem on mine.
dude,u can never set the ring path to your sd card 'cause when you turn off your phone, the electricity supply of SD card will be cut off.So every time it rings, windows is unable to read the ringtone file.
so just copy the ringtone to your storage, never be on sd.
cheers

Well, after trying this tweak for almost a week now....I have discovered something VERY interesting....I have a Dopod 818Pro (HTC Prophet) running WM5. I tried like hell to get this tweak to work for almost a straight week now and it just WOULD NOT work. Well, quite by accident I realized that I had copies of my ringtones on the SD card to begin with and lo' and behold, it works on it's own!!!! I'm not sure if this is something to do with WM5 or the way Dopod conditioned the OS for their use, but it does work all on its own WITHOUT doing a reg tweak. I now have all my ringtones stored on the SD Card (not in a folder) and several contacts have their own ringtone assigned and each and every time I get a call from one of those contacts (whether the phone is on or not), the phone rings with that contacts ringtone!!!! VERY Cool!!!
BTW my registry string looks like this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound Categories\Ring\Directory\Windows\
Just thought I would share!!

It is said to be very important to add the trailing "\" to the registry value. So change the value to "\Storage Card\Rings\" or whatever it is you want. But just as said before, it is a bad idea to store Ringtones on Storage Card. Just donate a few kbytes of your BigStorage and you will be fine. You can also convert your mp3 to wma which takes even less space and the audio quality is almost the same (at least on the small speaker we are talking about). If you need Hi-Fidelity ringing from your phone, pay the London Symphonic orchestra to follow oyu arond
how you change the registri?
Hi how you change the reg. i didnt test it on wm5 thanks a lot guys
1.Hkey_current_user\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring
change the Directory from \windows\Rings to \Storage\Rings
2.Hkey_current_user\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\InCall
change the Directory from \windows\ to \Storage\
javascript:emoticon('')
After doing the reg tweak, when u ppl do the "set as ringtone" thing, it displays something like: copied ringtone to \windows\rings. Right....
Well its a bug in the program....the program actually copies it to the location specified in the registry, but displays a default msg which must have been preset by the programmer...must say bad programming...
but anyway useful program....
try it out....apply the reg tweak....the set a file as ringtone...and go to the directory u entered in the registry...and presto...
faysalshoaib you indeed are right, as you say dont worry about the message, this is red herring. I was doing the classic mistake of believing the message, doh.... it work as you say. Thanks for replies and effort.

Yup this works for me too. Simply put the ringtone into the directory \Storage\ and viola, you can select the ringtone from the pulldown menu of ringtones within the "Sounds and Notifications" application.
No need to perform any registry hack. This is on a JAMin.
Ringtones on the Storage Card without any tweaks
in WM5, if you put your MID or MP3 files on the root of the storage card or in if you create a folder on your storage card called My Documents and put the MID and MP3 files there, then they will automatically be found by the OS as available ringtones. This worked in pre 2.x and post 2.x builds.
No Reg Tweaking necessary.
There is a simple solution
1) One can use Photo Contacts so that one can store Rings on one's SD card any folder.
2) One can keep the mp3 and mid files open on SD card(Not in any folder) these are well recognised in the Ringtone selection box of the phone settings.
Change ringtones to Storage?
There is simple way!! Down RESCO FILE EXPLORER to your Magician. WM2003 is not registtry available. You can do it so easy!!
its "Storage Card" and not "\Storage Card\" on my device.
its "Storage Card" and not "\Storage Card\" on my device.
Hi all, I'm a noob with a Wizard on O2 running WM2005. I have had some partial success with the above topic. Would appreciate any advice as to whether I've done something really silly or whether the idea could be taken further.
OK, I nicked all of this from other threads so only take the credit for putting it together.
Suggest before you start you empty all of your mailboxes on the device.
Step 1. Disable messaging on startup. Believe there are two ways of doing this, one is to remove it from the "Today" screen items, or the following registry hack. "HKLM\Microsoft\Today\Items\"Messaging" And change Enabled to 0
Step 2. Apply the following hack: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MAPI Add a new string value called PropertyPath. For the value in that field, I added the storage card directory without the "attachments sub folder. i.e. \Storage Card\Inbox.mst... where ... is the (random?) number assigned.
Ok, when I synch the device, all of my emails now go to the storage card in the above named directory.
Right, now for the "partial" success bit (hoping the experienced guys can help out here).
Because I've disabled messaging in the registry, in order to get the items on the today display, I have to go into settings etc. Once that is set, it updates the registry so at reset time it screws up and creates a new "storage card" directory on the unit itself and renames the storage card as storage card 2.
Any thoughts on how to get round this ?
I've tried adding "messaging" to the startup folder and it ***** up as above.
So... thoughts are as follows:
Is it possible to add a cab to the extended ROM which forces the registry key to zero on reset (was thinking along the lines of the one already there which removes the battery icon)
....and for the gurus, is there something I could run to automatically add the "messaging" item to the today screen with some sort of delay on it to allow the card to initialise ?
and finally, have I banjaxed my device by doing this? Seems to work OK
Thanks all
Here is a reg tip to move the sync folder to an other place on your device. Works fine on my Artemis :
1) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services
2) Create a new String value called "FileSyncPath"
3) Enter the path of the new folder you want to be synchronized, eg "\Storage Card\My Documents"
4) Soft Reset
Now the folder "\storage Card\My documents" will be synchronized instead of the default "\My Documents"
Notes :
1- backup both the registry and the content of your "\My documents" BEFORE doing this. After the 1st synchro, they may disappear...
2- the official "My Documents" folder still exists in "\My Documents"
3- Your documents are in a second level folder and Pocket Word & Pocket Excel do not see the files. To open them, you have to go to the File Explorer first. Any idea to fix this ?
I found this tip on a french forum : http://qtek9100.forumpro.fr/
KR, Imer.
Does this really work? I'm surprised that there are not more messages on this topic.
What device did you try this on? I am about to give it a try on my Hermes...
Tx.
okay, I missed the first sentence where you say you tested this on an Artemis.
I just tested it on my Hermes and my findings are:
Sync from PC to PDA seems to be okay though there seem to be no format conversion (not entirely sure about this).
Sync from PDA to PC does not work. I have not been able to get any kind of changes on the PDA to be reflected on the PC:-(
Not good for me. Can you Imer confirm that you don't have the behaviour I just described?
Tx.
To be honest, I have only tried a few times because the storage card was not mine. I manage to buy a 2Gb as soon as I can.
I saw you post that on an other thread : http://www.itauthor.com/notes/archives/2005/12/syncing_to_stor.html
Did you tried it ? I think I will have my storage card next week.
KR, Imer.
Does anyone know if there is way to put the email and internet explorer storage onto the external memory card, as they eat up my my phones memory.
There is properly a registery setting to do this.
Good question. Allow me to add one more ..
I've installed Opera 8.65 on Storage Card. Does that mean the browser cache is also on Storage Card?
I found this.
1. To move email onto your memory card (SEE WARNING BELOW), do the following:
Create these directories:
\Storage Card\Mail
\Storage Card\Mail\Attachments
In HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\MAPI, create the following STRING entries:
AttachPath = "\Storage Card\Mail\Attachments" (without the quotes)
PropertyPath = "\Storage Card\Mail" (ditto)
2. To move your Internet Explorer settings onto the card, do the following:
Create these directories:
\Storage Card\IECache\Temporary Internet Files
\Storage Card\IECache\Cookies
\Storage Card\IECache\History
EDIT : Do not use the Temp folder on your storage card, this seems to get locked from time to time, which means your ppc starts to use the default storage aka your main memory.
In HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders, edit the existing three registry entries (pointing \Windows\Profiles\guest\…) to match the folders you just created.
Well done
I'll try to find the Opera settings.

I found this on another forum:
Move data and cache around to save memory
By default Opera installed a bunch of files and keeps cache in precious application data space (RAM). At least with the WM2003se version. By moving all of these files to a CF Card or SD memory stick you free up valuable RAM.
1) Edit the "Opera.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[User Prefs]" group
3) Change "Opera Directory=\Application Data\Opera" to a location that you would prefer such as "\cf card\opera"
4) Change "Help Directory=\Application Data\Opera\Help" to a location that you would prefer such as "\cf card\opera\help"
5) Move the following files and folders to the location that you specified above:
cach4 (folder)
help (folder)
imgcss (folder)
startpage (folder)
styles (folder)
chartables.bin
cookies4.dat
global.dat
opcacrt6.dat
opera.dir
oprand.dat
opssl6.dat
viger.dat
vlink4.dat
You are left with these files/folders in "\Application Data\Opera"
skin (folder)
opera6.adr
input.ini
opera.ini
english.lng
The tutorial is missing one step: Change the startmenu to the storage card
I did this on my Vox and its working, more free ram!
tocache: excellent, Thx!
Or for simplicity, install these cabs from Modaco:-
View attachment MoDaCo_CardInbox.CAB
View attachment Card_Cache.CAB
Perfect !!

Regards !!
A long time a was looking for a tool like this. It works perfect!! Thanks!
Couldn't find the MoDoCo thread the cabs came from, so will the cabs work on a WM5 Smartphone, like the Q? Thanks for any info.

You are the best my friend, thank you. It's work on Cingular3125
tried it and it's working like a charm great! now i can fully download my emails
e-mail storage card solution for HD2 also??
Do these fixes also work on HTC HD2?? I' m desperately trying to move the cache of e-mail to the storage card but nothing worked so far. Does this also mean there will be no complications with Sense and reading the e-mail tab? If this changes nothing but only the storage location (which I exactly want) to the storage card then this is the best thing since I got my HD2!

i figure out how to do it
I have run both the MoDaCo_CardInbox.CAB and Card_Cache.CAB. It seems to have partitioned my storage card. I now have Storage card with Inbox Folder and Pocket IE folder and Storage card2 with all the other files that are on the card. How do I undo this and get back to a working machine.

same thing happend for me. I removed "storage card manually"(because ity is a folder), then turned off the device, removed the micro sd card, and turn it on back.
when it is on again, insert the sd card, and everything came back for me.
(My device is HTC HD2)

I was able to do it as above. But instead of using the above registry location, I had to create the AttachPath and PropertyPath string entries in this location- HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings
How to use MoDoCo
Dear All,
I have installed MoDoCo in my HTY TyTn II, however I could not find it in the program nor setting. How to use this application?
thank you
Efendy
I'm using Andot's WM6 Perfect ROM, and everything seems really great.
For some reason I can't change the location of my ringtones
In my registry I have entered this string:
HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\Directory =
\storage card\Windows
Because my device seems to keep its ringtones in the Windows directory instead of the \windows\rings\
But I can't seem to select any ringtones,,,,
Is there something wrong with my edit? Is there something special about the ringtones (naming or bitrate)?
Just a follow-up:
There has also been similar discussion on the Tornado forum, with more responses...
Essentially, it's ignoring the registry setting in hkcu/control panel/soundcategories and will only recognise foreign sound files in the directory \windows\application data\sounds
And only in phone memory, not storage.
Can anyone imagine any setting that might cause it to override or ignore the soundcategories registry entry?
