Looking for a car holder which will let me use the phone in landscape mode. It's a T-Mobile Compact IV, I believe Brodit do a suitable holder, but can this support the phone in landscape? If not, any other suggestions?
Apparently this one will hold the unit in Landscape. Read the replies to my post in that thread and users say it holds in in firmly. I intend to get one.

Hi,
I also have an MDA compact IV and I've bought a Brodit carholder. Works perfectly. You can rotate the holder in any position, including landscape. It is also possible to tilt your phone. This is very useful when the sun shines onto your screen. This is the one I've bought:

Yeah, i also have the broadit (Active) holder with charger. i think its one of the best aftermarket holders out there..
Not the cheapest. but does the job well.
I wold say its about 90% of OEM starndard so not bad at all.
I use a DIY back plate to mount the holdr to the car.. they sell one for your make/model for about £15 but i thould i'd make my own.
EDIT:
Avoid the cheap holders, most of the time they disapoint and qulity is sub par.
Also. the brodit charger is not like the sync/charge cable supplied by htc, its a normal mini usb cable, so a standard USB mini cable will charge this also - just thought i'd mention it
I can confirm that the Brodit active mount holds my Touch Diamond in place well. As it is on swivel I can just turn it from portrait to landscape in an instant. As I also have GSen on the phone the display auto rotates when I do. Useful for Sat Nav sometimes
However I have read complaints that this mount is not so good with your T-Mobile version, because, as you know, it is a slightly different shape - I have read somewhere (can't remember where) complaints that it does not fit so well in the Brodit

My T-mobile MDA compact IV fits perfectly in the Brodit holder. No complaints from me.
I have an old active brodit holder, ya think I could get the passive holder for the diamond and use the old mini usb connector and "make it fit" somehow?
The price difference is so small it is not worth it. I got my active holder for less than £30 plus postage from fleabay. I think passive holder is only a few £ less.
The one's I've seen are more than double prize for active.
active 850-900 DKK vs 250-300 for passive
EDIT:
Checked e-bay:
Passive 16.95
Active cig 27.95
Active mol 42.95
So there's quite a difference

OUCH - I thought we were ripped off in the UK but those prices are ridiculous - £85 for an active Brodit mount! Especially when you consider that Brodit are just over the water from you!
Are you sure you are looking at the active holder, the one that just plugs into the cigarette lighter socket in your car, and not the built in one with the molen connector, which is more expensive (but still not that sort of price)? Or you could go onto ebay UK site or try http://www.expansys.com/ I am sure many would ship to Denmark and it would still be much cheaper.
it's the molen connector. that's what my old holder has, so I thought it was best to stick to the same, as the cable is already nicely tucked away behind the dash.
The cigarette one is like 600 DKK, still f'ing expancive.
I'm concidering the one from e-bay that is £28.95+6.00 shipping.

Your English is much better than my Danish!
My previous mount's wires were all hidden behind dashboard (professional instal). All I did was buy the active mount and then cut the curly lead and connector off and did the same with the old mount (after checking with meter that both had 5v supply to the mount!). Then crimped the wires together, insulating taped it all up, and hid the connection underneath the Brodit dasboard mount I had for my car. So still nicely hidden and no horrible wires dangling across dashboard
I bought the one with a cig plug from First2Save on e-bay, and it arrived today now I'll have to see if I can fit it on the old one somehow.
You know, the mini-USB connector is in a black plastic box thingy. On the old holder, it is possible to loosen two screws and remove the mini-USB cable. On the new one, it's glued together
Let the games begin!
So it's done
The old mini-USB connector, you can see the two holes from the screws
The mini-USB on the new holder. No screws.
It's not a piece of art, I could have been much more careful
The finished product, glued together again and mounted in the car.
It doesn't look too bad, even though I did rush it a little. It fits like a charm, and I can use the cig->mini-USB for something else, e.g. on the old holder and sell it on e-bay haha
Well done! Unfortunately I did not have that option because my previous PDA (Ipaq 6340) and holder did not use a mini-usb port, but instead its own proprietory connector. That is why I needed to check and make sure they were the same voltage before cutting and fitting.

I modified an iPhone cradleto a Htc Desire cradle, later today i will post the instructions about how to modify this about 5 dollar cradle.
it fits perfectly because the iPhone has almost the same witdh and tickness .
i'm not responsible when you screw up the cradle or phone, i'm just sharing my creation.
This are the items, you need:
The Iphone dock: $4.51
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.31705
The dock cable: $1.80
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.40078
The dock for using the female connector: $3.14
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.21892
Micro usb plug And Mini usb: $2.24
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.36150
Preparation:
Start bij disessemble the " Micro usb plug And Mini usb" and "The dock for using the female connector" cable
The easiest way to do this is by using a knife to, the 1 cable is a bit difficult because it's glues together, make shure you het the mico usb like this and the mini usb like this.
Tip: try to keep the red and black wire from the female mini usb connected, this prevents solding work later on.
Also when you extract the female ipod connector keep the wires attached so you can soldeer it lateron to the micro usb (male), when you done it right, it will look like the picture below, with the wires connected.
(Don't mention the desiciptions of the pins on the picture below.)

Opening op the cradle:
On the first sight you won't find any screw-hols on the bottom, but they are the on the left and right side of the cradle bottom the are weak spots in the rubber, make 2 holes and you will see 2 screws, und-screw them an open up the cradle.
when the cradle is opened you'll see a print, you can remove it, it's not nessery anymore, in my first attemt i tried to use the audio port also but then i figuered out that the HTC Desire has no audio over usb option.
Assembling the HTC DESIRE dock
Starting with the most tricky part, solding the wire from the ipod femal connector to the micro usb male like the thumb below.
(Make sure the wires al long enough)
when this is done make a hole in the housing on the left side of the ipod connector. This is for the mini usb (female). Solder the black and red wire of the mini usb to the pins on the ipod female connector.
Now the difficult part is done.
Take some black tape an cover the innerside of the hole where the ipod male connector was. In the middle make is small insision where lateron the micro usb male connector had to fit through.
Take the bottom plate of the cradle and carefully take away some plastic like the photo below
Now this is done, the easy part begin. It's glueing time
Take your beautiful solding work and fit it in the cradle starting by fitting the ipod femal in the ipod female hole, and the mini usb female in the mini usb hole.
Stick the micro usb male intro the insision you made and attach your phone to it. To make use everything fit, assemble the bottom to the cradle.
When this is fits, heat up your glue gun or plastic glue and qlue everything in place, be carefull that you dont glue your phone to the cradle
Wait for a day so the glue is hard and than attach the bottom to the cradle.
and "whala" a beautiful Desire Cradle
pictures below are to help you get an idea.
cool thanks

what fuctions does a dock exactly serve? apart from looking pretty?
Does the phone automatically switch to the desktop clock mode once plugged in? or similar?
As you said it looks nice on your work desk or at night as a clock.
But it also provide a nice and efficient way to refill your battery.
However i don't think that you it auto switches to desktop clock, you have to set in on your own. Some said that it's cradle specific, but i'd rather think that the Desire doesn't allow it, contrary to the N1
Just got mine this morning, it shipped pretty fast from HK.
Usually it takes around 3 weeks, and this time not even one
For 14euros i got a really nice usb cradle with the room to put another battery, a free screen protector (really efficient and easy to put on) and an extra power adapter with the plugs according to your country (EU/US/UK...).

Can't take pictures right now, but it's definitely worth buying from him since he's a serious ebayer.
Looks nice, do you have a case on your phone? Just wondering if mine will fit on it with a case.
Not yet, they shipped from HK since 2 weeks and yet not arrived, while i bought this one on July 29th and it arrived today (Aug. 3rd),
There's really little room on the sides so I think that a "barely there" case (original or copy version) would fit.
Here's the copy i've ordered that might fit: http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250663722867&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
On the contrary, this one might be a little bit bigger in order to fit : http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250663666312&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Glasses alright? ;-)
Dude, promise me that you put on your glasses next time when you publish photos online
A little bit off topic, but does anyone know a cradle that would fit a Desire with invisibleshield applied?
The swedish car dock/phone holder maker brodit.se confirmed to me via email earlier today that they are working on a car dock/holder for the Z, but he couldn't say how soon it would hit the market.
I use a brodit.se for my G1, and I love it - so much better (both looking and functionality, i.e. it stays in place, guaranteed) than sunction cup solutions or ventilation clip holders.
̃ Christopher
sounds great! Can you get one and test it for me? =)
brodit.se tend to be pretty quick to make car docks whit chargers for htc phones. I'm guaranteed to procure me one. I'm sitting in the truck throughout the hole work day so I need it
then I have ordered the car dock with charger ..
http://twitpic.com/34p7xl 95,38$ delivery on door.
Got mine today, went for the Active Holder Tilt Swivel With Cig-plug. Early impressions are it's really solid and just what I was looking for, good quality charger with it as well. Would deffo recommend it to anyone who is after a powered car mount for the Z/G2
Got mine from DSL Developments who's service was spot on. Ordered 3PM on Monday, was in my hand Tuesday morning.
Could anybody confirm if it's still possible to put a phone to one of these chargers with any of protective hard or soft cases added? Or it just fit's in "naked"??

I would think you would not be able to get it in there with a case on, it's a pretty tight fit, and non adjustable.
Sorry, but it won't fit if there's any sort of cover attached, there's absolutely no additional room.
I found out that my new Z actually fits in my Brodit passive (no charger) G1/Dream holder, so I won't order a new holder just yet. For some reason they have chosen to not release a passive holder which rotates, which I think sucks - even though you're not supposed to text in traffic, I did sometimes, when stuck in traffic or at red lights, send of quick messages or emails, and it's so much easier IMO to work on the physical qwerty keyboard in landscape than the on-screen portrait keyboard.
The old G1 holder does swivel, but unfortunately the keyboard is not possible to open while the Z is in the holder.
~Christopher
Got my active Brodit holder a few days ago, fits the Desire-Z absolutely perfectly, and their matching car mounting plate is great for my vehicle too. Their stuff may not be cheap, but it's far-and-away the best on the market.
Andre
Do you guys think my DZ will fit in the Brodit active holder when it has a full body protector?
Sorry, no. Brodit mounts fit the phone just as snugly and perfectly as any of the covers do, but because of that they don't give any extra gaps around the phone.
Andre
I have mine for a weeknow. Fits perfectly like every Brodit i had before !!
can the desire z recognize if it is in a car dock when putting it into the active brodit mount?
I want to use tasker to enable gps when the Phone is in the mount.
Don't think so,
You could just say:
If not near home + charging then -> Activate GPS + activate car controls
or something

There's some stuff in the DZ user guide about the phone being able to recognise if it's in a car dock. No idea how it does this though.
I consider getting this: http://www.brodit.com/montering.jsp?anr=512200
I never used their products, so I have a few questions for those of you who already puchased one.
1. Do I need to buy a "Pro-Clip" designed for my car, is it already in the package, included in the price, or maybe I can just mount the holder as it is whithout other clips? It's not so clear to me how to mount it...
2. If I need screws, clips and stuff like that (as I see on the instructions) will I be able to quickly dismount the holder e.g. to use it in another car, without tools?
3. I would prefer the same product, but with a sucction cup for easy mounting on the windshield. Can I find a model like that, or a "Pro-Clip" for windshield mounting etc.?
4. Will I be able to use the audio jack, or is it covered?
5. Finally, can I adjust the holder position a little (upwards, downwards, left, right), or is it fixed? I understand that I can tilt it o have the phone in landscape, but are there other adjustments possible (with or without using screwdrivers or other tools)?
Thanks!
1. You will need a pro-clip for your car. Some online retailers bundle them in, you'll know because they ask you what car you're installing it in before you checkout.
2. You can get a Move Clip which enables you to slide the holder in and out of the pro-clip. For example: http://www.brodit.com/productinformation.jsp?anr=213005&sortiment=s800
3. Not that I know of.
4. The audio jack is not covered.
5. You can swivel it, rotate it, slide out the keyboard, everything. You don't need tools to do it.
Thanks for the answer!
So, basically, I install a ProClip designed for my car, then over it I mount the Move Clip, and on the Move Clip I mount the actual phone holder? Just checking to see if I got this right, so I can order those three products...
I don't like it too much mounted over the A/C vents, but the actual phone holder seems to be the best available. If there really is no choice to get a windshield ProClip, I'll go with the this Central Mounting here: http://www.brodit.com/montering.jsp?anr=852285
I'll have to change my car in a few months and I'll get another ProClip then, but still be able to use the holder - that is good.
i ordered the active mount from brodit and for mounting it in my car i got a car mounting kit with the possibility to mount the dock to the wind shield.

This is not a cheap setup, but nothing über ever is though is it.
Luckily T-Mobile decided to use the 17mm standard that Garmin uses for ball sockets so we can share accessories for them.
Parts Needed
ProClip mount for your vehicle - $30
(Optional) ProClip Dash Express GPS - Device Mounting Adapter - $25
Arkon Garmin 17mm ball to AMPS adapter - $8
T-Mobile G2x car dock - $30 or $10 on ebay
Process
Attach the ProClip mount to your car
Attach the female quick release to the mount
Attach the male quick release to the ball adapter
Connect quick releases together
Remove the phone holder from the windshield mount
Attach phone holder to ball mount
The quick release is optional, you can connect the Arkon ball adapter directly to your car mount without using it. I have several other devices I place there though so by having the quick release on all my devices it makes swapping them out very simple.

I found the stock mount to be frustrating at best. It also caused my phone to overheat and trigger battery overheating alerts which I've never seen before anywhere else. The sun here in FL heats up the back of the holder which then heats up the phone causing it to have issues so having it in the window is not an option here. I also had to remove it completely from the window every time I wanted to put my sun shade up which is also a necessity here. Also the power cable snaking up to the windshield is unsightly and obnoxious.
Plus the window mount is just ugly in my opinion, I'd prefer to not have to look at it since it makes my car look ghetto which I do not want.
I went ahead and got the same setup as you, but I decided against the quick-release part. Also, instead of paying $29 to T-mobile for their holder, I found the same LG OEM holder on ebay for $10. But I got the Pro-clip mount like you, as well as the 17mm ball adapter from amazon.
Mine seems like it will mount in front of one of the in-dash a/c vents. That could be good during the summer, as the cold a/c will be blowing on the back of the holder. But I guess I"ll have to close that vent in the winter when I use my heater, lol.
Although, I"m sure yours will look slightly sexier in your corvette than mine in my malibu, lol.
I'll update the OP to have the eBay reference instead, that's a good one to save costs. I had gotten mine the day I got the phone so I at least got the 30% off of it but it's still way too expensive for what it is. Doing the cheaper T-Mobile mount and not doing the quick release makes it a much cheaper setup, and it's nice and stable. Also useful for those states like Cali that don't let you place items on your windshield except in very specific locations.
Yeh, I think with all of the components ordered, my total was about $58...definitely less than I had anticipated spending, so I'm very happy about that. I couldn't have made the decision without your review, so thanks again.
Can you guys point me to the phone holder with the ball mount "receiver" (into which the ball goes) on it?
Every G2x car dock holder I can find is just attached to a crappy suction cap arm thing. So, to reiterate, I need the thing the phone goes into (like a case) but with a ball receiver on the back.
thanks!
It's the LG G2x car dock that you buy from either T-mobile or you can get it cheaper on ebay. You just toss aside the suction cup assembly and use the holder with the other parts that are clearly listed in detail in the OP.
Btw, brentil, did you have to drill out the ProClip bracket? Or did you use screws instead? Because the mounting holes in my bracket are very tiny (too small for the nuts/bolts that came with the ball assembly) and are only about half-depth. The two options I see are, drilling or switching to screws instead of bolts...which direction did you go?
Mine actually came with screws and bolts. I bought mine 3 years ago though. They are small pointed screws.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Hi, brentil,
Just a note of thanks for the "heads-up" about LG and Garmin sharing the same 17mm ball-mount. My G2x will be sitting on the Garmin "beanbag" mount in a rental car in the next few weeks and I have the feeling that the Garmin windshield mount will be a lot less vibration prone than the OEM LG.
You RULE!
P.S. (everybody): slkwirelessessentials, on eBay, has the OEM LG 2X/G2x car docks for $ 7.99 with free shipping. They come in beat-up boxes, but they are new (they also have some "used" ones for a little less).
Busted out my calipers and was super excited to see them read 17mm since I knew that was a Garmin standard.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I already have a proclip mount for my garmin, this is damn handy. I've just placed an order on ebay for the LG dock. That with a cigarette lighter adapter for USB should handle everything I need. Thanks for the info guys.
just a heads up. placing in front of air vent is not a good idea. it caused issues with my hd2 by causing condensation to build up inside the battery area.

Hi all,
Just wanted to upgrade that after spending a fair bit on an iPhone 5 brodit holder only to sell the phone for a GS3 and purchasing a GS3 holder (for skins), I really did not want to splash out more £££ for a S4 holder if and when it comes out from Brodit.
So today I tried the GS4 in the holder. Because of the small change in height between the two versions, the S4 fits perfectly in the S3 Brodit holder. I use the holder for skins which has no grip from the sides but instead a charger port at the bottom and a spring loaded clip at the top.
Charges fine so no issues there - also I >think< the ciggy plug is 2a anyway so it charges pretty quickly
Give me a shout if anyone has any questions about it.
Oh the plug is not made to tell the S4 it's in car-mode so all that is manual. I have an NFC tag at the back of the holder that used to switch the S3 into Driving Mode so I can do something similar for the S4 instead of spending money on another holder which would only potentially add the auto-dock functionality.

Thank you for you feedback. Can you post pictures of your Brodit holder with the S4 ? Do you have a link for the Brodit holder ?
Thank you.
I was about to post to see if anyone had tried the S4 in various S3 holders. I have a brodit setup in my car now for my old Nexus S and I wanted to upgrade it for the S4. I emailed proclip and they said they are working on the S4, but don't have a release date. If the S3 works, I'll get that now. A bonus is that my wife has an S3 so she can use it too. One issue with the case friendly holder is that it's $110. That's a little steep. I didn't have a case on my Nexus S, so I was able to use the normal holder that does grip on the sides. The S3 and S4 are a little different in this regard, so not sure that the S3 normal holder for $60 would work.
The other (cheaper) option I've been looking at is to get the iBolt xProDock for $40 plus AMPS mounting plate ($7) to connect it to the brodit vehicle adapter. Seems like there would be an extra step involved with attaching the charging cable each time, but you wouldn't have to connect audio by aux/bluetooth like you do with the brodit/proclip holder. It's also $70 cheaper.
Has anyone else tried the S4 in S3 docks meant to be used without cases?
sorry for the delay
So the one I got was part number: 512409 and was purchased from Brodit but of their eBay UK site (I'm in the UK)
It's the one that allows skins though works fine with the s-view case as long as you fold the "lid" back behind the phone. I had the same with the S3 with a similar case. Also has the charger built into this one and charges quickly without any issues.
Here are a couple of pics

Actually looking at this pic, it looks like the screen protector is peeling at the top, it is not and the protector does not even cover that bit. I think it's a bit of fluff in the flap for the case that's been folded back so don't worry :- )

Passive holder is already out, and so I'm guessing active holder can't be that far behind.
Must have only just come out but remember the passive one you linked does not allow skins or any type of case on the phone so if you have one, you would have to remove it to then slide into the holder.
The GS3 one I posted above allows skins - as you can just about see, I have the s-view case on but you can have the clip on cases too
Does anybody know when I could get a magnetic car dock for my Z3 from? I have the Sony DK48 which I find excellent and would like something like it but for me to use in my car and that will hold my phone secure and charge my phone without me having to open the charging flap?
I want one of these as well!!
Also looking at this. Had a great qi dock for my nexus from choetech and missing the ease of just popping the phone in
Brodit will make one soon I'm sure. This is the Z2 one which charges via the magnetic port: http://www.brodit.com/product.html?id=512635&pn=prod&brand=Sony&model=Xperia Z2
That might even fit the Z3 to be honest.
Yep, they have one.

Hey,
I ordered one of these a couple days ago and it just arrived. Works really well! I removed the tray since I use a case, but it holds the phone pretty well and charges!

I've always used Brodit docks for my previous devices (like the Z2) -- these are by far the best solution out there -- however the Z3 dock is not available quite yet.
So in the meantime, I'm using my Z2 dock (ordered from ProClipUSA) with some duct tape on the inside of the grips to keep it from sliding off.
I've also tried the Sony XSP-N1BT car receiver, but with somewhat mixed results.
Just ordered the n1bt, hopefully it secures the z3 well enough

Brodit dock
I want that Brodit dock. Does anyone know how I can buy it in Canada or USA? I can only find it being sold in the UK and will cost me over $100.

proclipusa.com is the US version of Brodit. ... but it looks like they don't have the Z3 version yet.

This looks awesome. Using my cd slot for a dock makes so much sense and it's probably the only practical place to put my phone.
I just don't understand how it grabs the phone. What attaches (and how) to the phone to magnetically connect it to the dock? Is there already enough metal on the phone or something?
I guess I could then buy a separate magnetic charging cable in case I ever need a charge on the go too.

It comes with a metallic plate and you may adhere to your phone or using a back cover.

I was afraid of that. I don't want to adhere anything to the back of my naked Z3. She likes to be bare.
Dammit.

They changed the URL: http://www.proclipusa.com/phone-holders/device/sony/xperia-z3-not-for-the-z3v-verizon.cmsv.
I got mine now - the version with the cigarette plug charger. But there is a problem: The top grip is so tight that if you have applied any screen protectors, those will be partially peeled off when you slide in your Z3. (I wish they had a return policy, I'd return mine now).
So instead, I'll stick with their Z2 holder (below). This works fine for the Z3 as well, though I ended up wrapping 3-4 layers of black electrical tape around the rightmost "knob" to keep the phone positioned such that it makes good contact with the charging connector on the left.

Any magnetic car charger docks that could work with a Case Mate tough? It works fine with a normal sony dock, so maybe a "looser" car dock may work?

I have the Herbert Richter HR 1245 / 42 ("mini smart gripper 3") mounted on a ball joint on a brodit clip. Total cost ~35€ and it now serves my third smartphone.
For the Z3, the placement of the left clamp is PERFECT, because i could glue my Magnector cable onto the bracket. I always insert left side first, then push the right side in (from the front, not the top; no neet to "open" the brackets, they will hold it fine), which would make the cable snap right into place. The brodit + Herbert Richter solution may not be the cheapest or most practical one for the Z3, but as i said - i'm now using it with the third phone (Razr i -> One M7 -> Z3), so instead of buying 3 docks i bought one and it still works.
On the picture there's a Z1 mini and not the brodit car clip but another universal one. Just to show you what i meant with the placement of the brackets.
Well, I have a normal car charger from Best Buy and have the USB to microusb cable out of the box. I've plugged the cable into the Sony Charging Dock for my Z3 and place it near the dash then put a lot of Blu Tack underneath. I've had no problems since - the Z3 doesn't wobble or gets ejected from the dock (from braking or accelerating). I drive a Hyundai Tucson, by the way (if that info is of any relevance).
