Avoid iMate in the UK - Their customer service is crap - General Topics

Hi,
I posted the following message (which is all true btw!) to iMAtes offical forum yesterday, and they censored it (by removing the thread). Since then, the promised callback from sbe (their UK repair center) failed to materalize.
I think the WM community deserves to know what level of service they can expect if they are silly enough to purchase a iMate device.
george
Hi,
I bought a 9502 on release day from Clove, for around £500. It lasted all of 2 and a half months, before the buttons stopped working. Clove recommended sending it to sbe limited for repair, which I did, 3 weeks ago.
Firstly, they tried to quote me £150 for the repair. I emailed them, and got no response after a week.
So I phoned them, and was told that it would be repaired for free, and be back within a week.
Ive now waited 3 weeks, during which I sent sbe 3 more emails, all of which have been completely ignored.
I phoned them up today, and after being on hold for 25 minutes, they finally answered, and said they are awaiting parts, and will call be back with more info... I will post here if they do, but I doubt they will!
They told me they have a massive backlog of emails to get through - thats a shame for them, but its not good enough for iMate to be successfull in this market.
Ive since bought a HTC Touch Pro, and, guess what? it works...
I will never buy another iMate device again, and i suggest noone else does either.
The device itself doesnt work very well at all (keeps hanging, slow, reminds me of the failed toshiba g900, but not QUITE as bad as the tosh). The Touch Pro, despite being practically the same chipset, works very very well in comparasion.
On the iMate ultiamte, the old Windows Mobile problem that it cannot keep up with my typing occurs. I have to literally tap one key, wait for it to respond, and then tap the next key and so on. The Touch Pro has the innovation of a keyboard buffer - if it cant keep up, it remembers what I typed, and processes the keys when it can.
We were also promised an official WM61 update in august... suprise suprise, that hasnt happened either.
The battery life is also crap compared to the Touch Pro (even though the iMate has a higher capacity battery). I put this down to lack of graphics accelleration on the iMate - you can literally see it struggle to redraw the home screen, whereas on the touch pro, it just happens instantly.
If you want any support at all on your phone DO NOT BUY IMATE. They are obviously too small a company to offer proper support (disclaimer - ive never had to use HTC's support, because their devices work, so I cannot comment on it, but I doubt the networks would let them get away with this poor level of support).
I will post an update tommorow (or before if SBE actually bother to ring back).
Does anyone have an email address for iMate themselves, so I can complain about sbe - surely iMate will want to know their reputation is being trashed be SBE??? their web page doesnt seem to offer any email address (a good way to keep pesky customers off their backs i guess), and their live support is only available for a couple of hours in the morning - i will try it tommorow).
A mobile phone is only valuable for 12 months IMHO (as I replace mine every year), so I have lost at least 1/12 of the value of the iMate, just by not having it for this time.
Even if the repair is slow, a good start would be to use a repair company that actually has the staff / resources to answer emails / phones. I dont feel like a valued customer.
ps. IMate - if you delete this forum message, I will make it my business to post it on as many mobile phone related forums as possible (modaco, xda developers etc).

that sounds a bit rubbish mate and i'm feeling your pain with you. Posting stuff like that here is definetley a good start as its read by a lot of people.
HTC stuff in my experience is just as poor build quality - so much so I avoided them for a while with my Tosh G900. My experience of my G900 has not been like your and mine was excellent... fast, responsive and built like a castle wall! My HTC devices have all failed at one point or another and i've yet to get 12months out of ANY HTC device I have ever owned. For example, my Touch Diamond feels like its made of paper, the paint is wearing off the back cover, the screen bezel/front cover has scratched, the screen is scratched and the buttons are scratched. This phone, like all my phones, is treated like a baby wrapped in cotton wool and has NEVER been dropped or banged, never put in a pocket with money or keys and always been treated like royalty. I have used HTC repairs and they are not actually that bad though.
Good luck with your Touch Pro and hope you get your Imate sorted

I agree with you 100% they provide the worst customer support I have ever seen
Our complains in thier forum and emails are always not answered
really I regret having one of thier ultimate 9502
and we don't kow how can we punish this company but at least new customers have to think twice before dealing with imate

I think everyone knows I agree. It's coming up to 5 weeks (+2 weeks the first time) and I still have no phone back thanks to a combination of I-Mate and Clove's incompetance. Been told to sit in today and wait for a replacement direct from iMate.
I bet:
a) It won't come today.
b) When it does arrive it'll have the same problems the old one was sent away for.
Terrible product, terrible support and terrible reseller.

I am really glad i found this fourm i was about to do the same thing. buy the 9502 from clove. haha. i dont know now though.
I guess i am still on the qwest to find the perfect phone for me.
it has to have atlest 128ram gps wifi and atleast vga
i am looking at the toshiba g910 but no the touch pro because there is no softkeys in landscape mode

Dont buy toshiba either
... i had a g900, and it sucked donkeys balls... for many reasons...
the touch pro is great - the lack of hardware soft buttons doesnt bother me at all..
g

Lack of scroll wheel / camera buttons etc does concern me about the Touch Pro.
Perhaps wait it out for the Sony Ericsson X1?

I thought that too, until I got it... the touch screen scrolls on finger movement (it seems to be able to tell the difference between a tap and a drag). It doesnt work on all programs, but it seems to work on mail, opera etc, which is where it matters IMHO
The camera button missing could be a PITA for some, but I rarely use the camera.
In fact, the hardware buttons are one of the most annoying features of previous phones ive owned, beacuse I was always pressing them by accident. I usually mapped them all to 'none'
g

Yeah. I think I'd probably end up mapping camera to the long press of 'end' key. Problem solved. My 9502 did that finger scrolling thing. SPB Pocket Plus enabled it. It's ok, but I preferred the wheel for being able to use the phone without having to poke the screen all the time.
I have heard though that it is possible to remap the volume buttons to scroll, and I think people are working on getting the zoom function to scroll instead like older HTC devices (which would be much more practical for me).
Oh, and my 9502 didn't arrive today. I'm not surprised.

LG KS20 - User Opinions?

I wanted some feedback from KS20 owners.
It's available here in India for approx Rs 20k. I am presuming it will come with an English ROM.
Rather than ROM extraction and cooking, I wanted owner opinions on the unit.
How stable is the firmware?
Any bugs/crashes?
Any compatibility problems with programs?
Any physical problems with the unit (easily scratches/paint peeling etc...)?
Do you use a screen guard?
What was included in the box?
What's the ringing tone volume like? (Lots of reviews have said it is VERY low. India is a very loud country and I need a load ring tone and strong vibra).
What's the earpiece volume like? (As above, I need a loud earpiece to hear the other party. I also have a hearing problem which means that earpiece volume is extremely important.)
I am thinking about buying a KS20 vs Touch. There is no 3G in India. What I am looking for is a very light handset that I can use as a daily phone. Would a KS20 handle a rough daily life?
(Off topic question: Any ideas on what HTC will announce in the first week of May? Something that would match/exceed a KS20 as a Touch replacement?)
got an KS20 in bombay..... im liking it.. but kinda finding bugs with WM6 not the handset.... might jus hvto flush the entire OS and reinstall it or sumthin..... but luvin the handet.... ive customized it to make is easier for usage... got the spbshell application ..... got the phonepad keyboard for easy typing.... and yaaa got screenprotector..... but yaaa also liost my stylus the first week n they dunt give any spare in the box...so basically jus waiting to buy a spare once the spare parts are available in india!..... other than that...luv the phone.. :-D
Thanks,
Any specific bugs? I am a bit worried about availability of spares, with HTC items, spares and accessories are available everywhere.
Does it really has 128MB/256MB or 64M/128M?
The marketing phrase: 128MB internal memory means nothing to me. Actually it scares me, as I would think they are trying to fool me.
I have a KS20. I like it It has a bug: cannot send SMS messages but I don't think it's from the phone. It's either from the SIM card or from the WM. I don't use texting much so it's not a problem to me as I have Skype and a WiFi. I had problems with Skype calls, but there's a solution in the Skype forums. It also has problems with Opera Mobile 9.7 but works fine with Opera Mobile 9.5.
P.S. Sorry for resurrecting this topic, but someone can benefit from it
Ooooh yes, let's revive this topic, because it gives me an opportunity to stress how much I hated that device.
First, the pros:
- very good-looking (IMHO) industrial design
- lightweight
- slim WM6 device.
- 3G capable
- with a case that integrates very neatly.
Now, the cons, which I consider absolute dealbreakers:
- buggy OS. Don't think that just because this is a WM6 phone, it supports all WM6 applications. There's no clear pattern or reason to it, but some apps (including most of my paid-for apps) do not work properly on the KS20.
- GPS/navi apps in particular don't run properly because the KS20 is unable to play voice prompts (like "turn left") from the navi software. This is true for most navigation apps, and the only, silly workaround is playing a "silent" audio file endlessly in the background.
- battery prone to corruption. Most KS20s suffered from a battery bug where, after some use, the battery would always show 99%, irrespective of the actual charge. So your phone would just suddenly run out of power, and you had no way of knowing when. Supply of replacement batteries was a serious worldwide problem last year, too.
- Also, you need to be aware that the KS20 employs the Widcom/Broadcom bluetooth stack. I mention this because it may cause problems with some applications.
LG support negated all these faults, although they had been reported in the forums worldwide. It took some lengthy negotiations with my carrier before I could get a replacement - actually I had to send it in three times, each taking about 5 weeks. See how that can make you mad?
After all, I got a Touch Diamond as a replacement. So I'm back with HTC (where I had been before the LG KS20), and I'm a happy badger now.
Bottom line: Give the KS20 a wide berth. Don't go anywhere near it. Slick device, but alas, what a piece of junk to work with.

*NEW PHONES* HTC Diamond 2 & Touch Pro 2 **PICTURES**

WOW BREAKING NEWS
Touch Pro 2 News From engadget.com (http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/htc-touch-pro2-is-awesome-in-ways-the-touch-pro-never-could-be/)
So, how do you make HTC's Touch Pro -- already near the top of the WInMo heap -- an even beefier device? For starters, you can throw out that nasty VGA screen of yesteryear and up it with a 3.6-inch 800 x 400 replacement. Next, add a dedicated touch-sensitive zoom slider that works overtime to take maximum advantage of said screen, then throw in a few key carryovers: 512MB of ROM, 288MB of RAM, microSD expansion, and a 3.2 megapixel cam. Meet the Touch Pro2, the official follow-up to HTC's popular series of QWERTY sliders that introduces so-called "Straight Talk" technology for "seamlessly" transitioning conversations between email, single-line calls, and party calls. It'll also automatically switch to the crazy high-performance, full-duplex speakerphone simply by flipping the phone over, so it's clear that this bad boy was meant for business. It'll launch early in the second quarter in parts of Asia and Europe with other "major global markets" following in early Summer.

I just wish it had tv-out or I'd get it (or the diamond2) I guess I'm the one who uses that feature a lot on my omnia.
Edit: My bad... It DOES have tv-out))
awesome..
now i know why peoples selling their phones
Support HTC
The TouchPro 2 seems more like the Tytn II replacement to me,
I LIKE.
The touch pro is more business oriented. . . so it probably wont have alot of media features were hoping it has .
A dump promise
Hopefully, someone will soon get their hands on these units to dump the ROMs and port them to Touch Diamond and Touch Diamond Pro.
1-very nice but the lack of d-pad and other buttons is annoying as hell.
2-lets hope the fix the very very poor performance of the diamond this time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZHYimU-VHM&feature=related
3-also software, themes, apps development forums will be too segmented. diamond ,diamont2,tpro,tpro2, blackstone,x1 are all very similar phones(internally). is there a clean and logical way to combine them.
4-whats the code names of these two devices
very nice. Shame they wont work for more than about 3 minutes before something falls off/a random onboard chip of some random nature starts to malfunction.
HTC, design phones then get someone decent to manufacture them.... you cant manufature for toffe.
"...something falls off". Please explain. I've had the Diamond for 2/3 of a year now and nothing has "fallen off"....
In my opinion, the build quality of HTC products is impeccable.

My experience of HTC hardware is far from good. BlueAngel (dead speaker), two TyTN's, one TyTN II and now a TD - all and i mean ALL of them have had at least one warranty repair or replacement. Actually , thats a lie: TD was sent back for a full refund under UK consumer law as "Not Fit For Purpose" as at the time there was no way to play music without the famous skipping/pause issue.
Just fire up google and use terms like "HTC" "hardware" "fault" "Issue" and so on .... you'll soon see what a timebomb of a device you have.
My Toshiba G900 and now Omnia have restored my faith in Smartphones and there reliability.
thats odd....my TyTNII(Kaiser, from USA) has been nothing short of amazing, and it has taken its share of nasty falls!
anyone know what carrier in the U.S will be providing the TP2??
im praying its AT&T, Its almost time for an upgrade, and I think im in love
Perhaps you got some Gremlins
My HTC phones all work like they did on their first day. I didnt have any hardware Problems and the software problems where solved by this nice Community.
Ok, i hve to admit that HTC really doesnt care that much software-wise... I bet they wont release proper drivers for these devices either...
Thats no problem for me though, as i wont buy another arm or qualcom based Smartphone anyway. Im up for atom-powered voice capable MIDs now.
Hmmm. Quite fancy the Pro 2. Shame it doesn't have a slightly beefier processor though. I'm sure these will be replaced by Snapdragon or Tegra devices shortly after I buy one!
i opened a similar thread but it's closed cause i was to slow
now my question again
what's that "zoom bar" supposed to do
but if HTC devices are built so horribly, why use them over and over?

my guess its just the touchwheel from diamond and tpro. not that usuful if you ask me since they could have added more usfel buttons with dpad or remove it for the sake of bigger screen or just remove it to make the phone smaller.
Copy from Raphael Thread
My thoughts:
1. First thing I thought was: I wonder if there will be some way to buy this from AT&T without breaking my contract? I mean, what do they do for people who got a 2-year contract with the original iPhone, and then a year later they want the new iPhone?
2. Longer battery life and a bigger screen are very welcome.
3. I hope that keyboard is a mock-up. Also, I can't imagine using a non-Fuze keyboard, let alone one of those 3-row keyboards most phones have, but it's just way too convenient to have all those punctuation marks available top row.
4. I wonder when this phone will reach stateside.
5. I wonder why the phone's specs aren't improved?
6. I wonder why it's not all-black. It better just be a mockup.
7. Almost Touch HD-sized screen, and the TYTTN II tilt *drools*
But really, it took an entire year for the Touch Pro to come out in the states, so who is really banking on this thing coming out by Summer? And what will AT&T do when I'm willing to give them 300 more dollars for the Touch Pro II, and I still have a contract?
Sure, it's not the improvement we'd all have made. Not more RAM, not a better processor, or drivers... but it's still an improvement over the Touch Pro (unless that isn't a mockup keyboard, in which case I may cry over the colour scheme and the fact that there are LESS KEYS on that phone than the existing Touch Pro) and I'll take it. Plus, the front-facing D-Pad is a pain to use anyway that I just open it up and use my Keyboard D-Pad.
Good point...

TG01

Hi Guys (and girls),
I've been a long time lurker in this forum and finally joined up partly to thank you all for the help I have gleaned from these pages over the years, absolutlely invaluable and it's saved my life more than once so many thanks to all of you, and partly to post my thoughts on the new TG01 which Orange just gave me.
I've had smartphones for years but have never really got on with fully touchscreen devices, to me a phone is primarily that, a phone, and I like having physical buttons for such things as dialling numbers, to me that just seems like a minimum requirement for a phone, being able to dial a number. I also don't like having to find some shade just so I can make a call and have never had a problem seeing some buttons even in bright sunshine. Over the years I've had a lot of HTC devices and the one I liked the most was the Orange E650 branded 'candy bar phone', I had four of them in total and to me it was just a great mix of form and function but then my last one broke so here I am with the TG01 becasue Orange no longer supply the Touch HD.
So the TG01, hmmm, what a missed opportunity. Why Toshiba didn't wait for WM 6.5 I don't know, maybe they know more than we do, but the interface they've come up with is just rubbish, it may have beem acceptable a couple of years ago with those low rez icons but since the iphone, nah. I have downloaded the Spb interface and frankly without it the phone would have gone straight back to Orange so why Toshiba didn't just lisence it from Spb in the first place is beyond me, would have cost them what maybe a buck a phone? Or less? Instead of which they slipped some guy in their software department 50 bucks to work through his lunch break and come up with their interface, and this from a company that makes laptops, what were they thinking? Maybe what they were thinking was, 'this will get us by until WM 6.5 comes out at which point we'll ditch this and so will all our users'. Also, why no sensor so the phone knows when it's by your face or in your pocket? Jeez guys!! The reason I canned my first touch screen phone three years ago, it was an Orange M600, was because I kept doing things with my ear when I was speaking on the phone and that was THREE years ago, come on Toshiba it's not rocket science, it's a phone for goodness sake, people want to talk into it!
So, there's my 5c, as I need a new phone and there's nothing else grabbing me I may keep this one although just this morning it has started playing me up when I make and receive calls, callers can hear me but I can't hear them, the speaker is just dead and swithing to speakerphone doesn't help so I think it's a software bug rather than a hardware fault. I had put S2U2 on to prevent the 'answer a call with your pocket' phenomenon but I've taken it off again in case it was that which was causing the problem, we shall see.
Once again thanks for all the advice and I may keep you posted on my thoughts on the TG01, if I keep it.

Wow, what a warm welcome, thanks Orb I really am lost for words.
lol...gentle and ever so lovingly bit your head off.lol.
Anyway, I got to play with the TG01 recently and I think it a huge foward step in terms of hardware and an even bigger step backwards in terms of software. Its almost like the phone isn't even being challenged by they system that it runs. Compared to my Touch HD, lag is dramatically reduced and the feeling of moving from one thing to another is silky smooth. Bad news was it my old HTC Touch (no HD) was ten times better than this phone when it came to the UI. Blew my mind when i figured out they didn't even attempt to skin windows, just create the ugly striped shell. Huge screen and I was sitting there doing the corner of the fingernail tap just to hit those small icons and little spots on the WINMO interface. This phone plus HTC loving= best phone available. I mean i really took a step back and got to understand how far HTC and samsung have come in making winmo usable.
I didn't get to put any programs on to the phone but as you did I figure SPB3 is probably the best way to go. And no comment about the terrible call quality, I just text my friend now cause it sounds like he's in a hollow room with bad reception ALL THE TIME. Good luck my friend. Probably should have waited for the Omnia2 or picked yourself up a TD2, this is the price you pay.
Thanks
Hey Style 1. thanks for the feedback and best wishes. As I said I may not keep this phone but I can trade it for around £300.00 without blinking and I also have two brand new Treo Pros that Palm gave me so I'm not too concerned, if puch comes to shove I'll pick up a Touch HD somewhere and I shouldn't be out of pocket on the deal. I needed to renew my contract anyway to get access to the unlimited data package Orange are doing now so all in all I'm good.
As to the phone I agree with your take on the GUI but you really should see it with the one from Spb, it's like a different device and we both know it needed to be, it would have been back in the box and back to Orange the same day if the Toshiba interface was my only option. Now all I need to find is a good 'slide to unlock' programme that works for this phone and I'm away, tried both S2U2 and TouchLockPro to no avail so maybe I'll give Pocketsheild a whirl, got any advice on that my friend?

[Q] Need some advice on phone replacement!

Hello!
I'm in kind of a bind trying to figure out what to do in regards to replacing my smartphone. Around October 2009, I signed a 3 year contract with Telus and obtained an HTC Touch Pro 2. I loved it until I broke it at SeaWorld in Florida.
In June I took it to Telus for repair (where they give it to a 3rd party repair shop here in Nova Scotia). It's been in for repair since then, I still haven't got it back. The only thing that was broken on it was the digitizer (just the glass behind it). Since I put it in, the LCD had to replaced as well for whatever reason, and now the battery is toast. And the thing quote "isn't booting". Because I had the thing flashed to 6.5, they won't honour the warranty, and continue to take their sweet time in repairing it. Eventually I got fed up and borrowed a spare unlocked BlackBerry Bold 9000 from a friend, which I later just bought off him for next to nothing.
Problem I'm having now is the Bold is way too small, and the tiny keyboard is really starting to cramp my hands and give me hand pain, so I want to get something else that's either got a hardware keyboard oriented sideways (landscape), or has a decently sized touch screen. I'd try to get my TP2 back, but I don't really want to deal with the resistive screen or lack of HSPA support now.
I've been looking at following:
HTC HD2: A friend of mine has had one for about a year now - the Telstra version. I can't seem to find a decently priced one though, most of them are well over 700CAD.
HTC HD7: Same deal as the HD2, it's really expensive, even used.
Samsung Galaxy S: This one looks the most promising, as most of them are around $400 used and even new. After some searching on these boards, I found some information regarding how awful they are... at least with the software. If it's just software issues that are fixable myself by replacing Samsung's crap software, I can deal with that.
BlackBerry Torch: I'd probably exclusively use the touchscreen keyboard due to the hardware one being as awful as the Bold's. I'd rather not bother with another BlackBerry though.
LG Quantum: I've had bad luck with LG products in the past (namely DVD drives eating discs and spitting out shards), and it looks a bit small. Bell never has them to try near me.
If there's a handset that fits what I'm looking for that I didn't think of, let me know. Thanks for any help given!
I Like Galaxy Series
I haven't had any experience with the other phones you mentioned, so my recommendation is completely biased.
I have a Samsung Captivate. I rooted it just yesterday (sick and tired of playing the "oh it'll be just a few more days" and the end of those few days never comes - Rath to AT&T and Samsung for this) and flashed an Android 2.2. ROM. Before this phone, I had a Blackberry Bold 9000, loved that phone....until I got my hands on the Samsung!
Things to watch out for with Samsung - just expect to do your own software updates. Sometimes I've experienced issues with the "Back" button 'sticking' (although that has improved since rooting and flashing 2.2). GPS doesn't work that great until you get 2.2. Battery dies fast - an app called "Juice Defender" (Available on the Market) helps me a lot with that.
Some pros: The screen is fabulous, I love watching YouTube and other various videos online with it. It's easy to connect to any WiFi and automagically knows which WiFi to connect with. It's fast (and faster after 2.2). I LOVE SWYPE (keyboard input method) you can't get that on any phone other than Samsung - it really IS FASTER for texting and e-mailing etc.
So those are my unofficial, biased thoughts. Good luck with your decision.
I vote for Leo as you can have Android running also and soon perhaps WP7
Yes it´s hard to get a Telstra version on a good price, I am looking for one too...
Don't get the Torch, I had one and it was a horrible disappointment. Touchscreen interface is terrible, the device is very cheap feeling, and the OS itself is still miles behind Android and iOS.
If I were you I would do with either a Galaxy S with a custom ROM, or a HD2 with NAND Android. I have used both, currently use Android NAND on the HD2, and love it.

Htc 7 pro - warning - do not buy !

Hello
I just want to warn everybody that want to buy HTC 7 PRO. It has been 5 days since it arrived from UK. It is already packed and ready for a journey back to reseller. It suppose to be a business tool but it with that kind of battery life it is just a joke. But U can somehow manage the juice usage and it is not the worst part. The worst thing about it is sliding mechanism. There are "reviews" all over the internet saying that great and durable. But it is a lie. It is weak designed and the build quality is also not so good. It makes "spring like" sound when it tilts and what annoy me the most is that after 5 days front part of mechanism wobbles. The keyboard is awesome but in combine with such poor sliding mechanism it is not a thumb up at all. I can not imagine how this mechanism will behave after couple of months with heavy business usage and seriously I really do not want to know. If You will add to this poor built headset Windows Phone 7, which is in my opinion awesome but still have a lot missing the HTC 7 PRO it is not a good choice. And I seriously do not recommend to buy it. The most funny part is the HTC customer support. I shared my concerns with them and they replied:
"all I can advise you is to use both hands when sliding the mechanism"
I expected the answer like "we tested the mechanism in advanced tests and it is designed to take a lot of hard usage"
but noooo they just advised me to use both hands. I wasn't quite sure if I want to send it back, but after I read their reply I will send it back for sure.
Of course the HTC BH M300 which was free gift has to be sent back also
I do not care that I spend a lot for delivery both ways I do not want to have this phone in my pocket, it is not worth even half money it costs.
Cheers
Pawel
Thanks for the heads-up. Have been wanting a landscape slider and looked at the Quantum, but I couldn't type good with it so I passed it by. If not knowing the user experience of the 7 Pro, I like its looks well enough to consider it. But thanks to you, I can discard it.

Did you ever think about the possibility that you've simply got a broken device?
I agree, I just got my hands on one and it's terrible... the battery life is at best on par with the HD7 and the keyboard though decently laid out feels cheap. the sliding mechanism is gritty and I do hear that spring noise...
I received mine from O2 Germany three days ago and I'd like to share my opinion that is much more favourable than the above posts.
On the hardware, I will not mention things that we all could miss such as a front camera, a micro SD card slot, I'll concentrate on what we have:
- tilt screen, I love this! You will hear a spring noise when sliding and tilting the keyboard out, yes. So what? Usage will show if it has been badly designed and cannot resist prolounged usage (and if so, it will be my pleasure to send it back to O2 during the warranty period to get a replacement phone).
- the screen is crisp, has a good contrast and is very responsive, I do not have any complaints here
- the sound is much better than past HTC phones I had such as Qtek S200, HTC Touch Pro, Blackstone and even HD2
- the material of the keyboard is of the type "grip" plastic and suits my taste. The keyboard is rather well designed, BUT we miss the ability to change language from within the hardware keyboard itself (the Touch Pro allowed this and it was very useful) and the ability to get CAPS LOCK - both issues very annoying. In comparison, the smileys key is really useless in a business phone and could have been replaced with a more useful feature!
- as far as the battery is concerned: as I am currently roaming, I have chosen to be in 2G mode, no wan access and with w-lan always on. I have the phone sync with 4 email accounts, three calendars, three contacts databses, and facebook + windows live. I managed to have the phone on with no recharge for two full days, with one hour of calls and approx. 40 internet pages browsed! I suspect that in 3G mode, with wan access an wlan on, this will drastically fall and result in the phone surviving less than a day on an intial full charge (same as with HD2 or similar devices, actually). I shall report when I have tested this.
- Before receiving the device, I was a little bit concerned about weight. Although it would be nice to have it 60 grams lighter, which would be quite a performance for its format, it is actually not an issue: the phone is simply big and I know this before buying it
- Speed is always very dependent on the OS. With WP7, it feels more responsive than a HD2 with Sense
- Mass storage: 8 Gb of which "only" 5.6 available is enough for my needs, but definitely too tight for those who want to carry 20 music albums and 5 full films with themselves (which is not an unreasonable expectation). The good surprise however is the speed at which files are being transferred from the PC to the phone (I did not measure it but it was definitely quicker than my class 4 SD Card with 64kb cluster size)
On the software (sigh):
- first feel of a system that is straightforward to understand and to use but...
- no copy paste. Other WP7 limitations such as lack of customization possibilities or lack of flash support or limited landscape support. We were warned. I personally can live with it.
- typical windows narrow-minded approach: exchange does not work if the certificate of the server is not matching its IP address, although iOS and Android support this with no problem, this makes me crazy!
- need to use exchange or windows live to replicate contacts and agenda, no active sync anymore. Lots of time lost to find a way to get Outlook synchronyze with the Phone via Outlook Connector. Need to copy paste contacts and calendar between Outlook main account and Windows live, no automatic synchronization between the two within Outlook - very very very poor design of the whole ecosystem
- need to use Zune. Cute programme but redundant with Windows Media Player WMC. MTS video format (used by my Lumix HD camera) seemingly not supported. Android does.
- only English, German an Spanish languages supported by the phone delivered by O2. I need more languages such as Italian and French
- no smart dial nor the possibility to jump to a contact by entering the first letters of it - you have to scroll the contacs or use the search functon, a real pain!
All in all, I think it is a good bit of hardware for business purposes, even if not at the forefront of the current possibilities (amoled screen, tegra processor, storage). You can live with the OS but it has to improve quickly to live up to its ergonomy promises. The reasons I did not buy the Desire Z were the processor, the three rows keyboard (instead of four) and the screen not tilting. The reason why I would not buy the HTC 7 Pro is... WP7. I've hesitated long and I've decided to stick to the device in the hope that WP7 improves soon, but I also hope that we will soon be able thanks to the XDA community to load other OS such as Android on it should Microsoft not deliver
Thanks,
I saw your reply and ended up with HD7. great device.

Usage will show if it has been badly designed and cannot resist prolounged usage (and if so, it will be my pleasure to send it back to O2 during the warranty period to get a replacement phone)
Click to collapse
I asked HTC what if in time the sliding mechanism will fail to deliver high usability let say and just break.
They said that warranty do not cover "wear and tear" , so if it will get damaged, You will get nothing from O2, maybe some stickers or key chain
it's the same thing htc singapore told me before
i went to replace the keyboard on my touch pro twice
the same keys failed both times (0, space bar, backspace)
guess what? they told me to use the onscreen keyboard more! if so, what is the point of buying a phone with a physical keyboard?
I am ashamed to say that It turns out that the only thing that actually works as supposed to is iphone :/
I have a love/hate relationship with HTC.
Most, if not all of their devices are very beautifully-looking. But I will always question their build quality, and that's ultimately their downfall, because it's ****. I mean, it's hit or miss with their devices. They either knock it out of the ballpark or fail at something that makes you scratch your head and wonder. For example, something as simple as their power buttons. But I won't get into it. I wouldn't be surprised if the keyboard on the HTC 7 Pro fails after prolonged use.
Hello All,
I just wanted to add my 5 cents...
I bought an HTC 7 Pro almost as soon as they were available from O2 Germany since they are not available in Luxembourg.
I have to say that the device is great!!
The tilt mechanism is smooth, and works really well. The battery life is fantastic!! I have sync with my exchange server running all day and with that, phone calls (not too many), using the GPS etc, I have so far never gone below 50% battery.
I wonder if HTC have manufacturing problem because you seem to be less happy, but I can honestly say that I find the phone to be GREAT and would HIGHLY recommend it!!
Hi, I also do not agree. The phone is great.
Indeed you need to slide with two hands, but a springy sound does not bother me. It probably is a spring If anything breaks than I expect normal warrenty.
WP7 is a blast! I needed to set my PC to US to trick Marketplace, but otherwise it is great. Many apps already and more on the way.
That was my 5 cts.
Maybe my problem is that I expected much more for the price. The price is only a bit less then Iphone 4 which costs in UK 510 quids. But the build quality of i device is a lot better.
I really like WP7 and iOS looks childish a bit
Just posted to Clove cheers
Just picked up mine from Sprint today and I have to say it is well built and I'm loving WP7 so far!
I to just got the Arrive and I have to say, it is definatly worth changing over from my Evo. I've been playing with this all day and havn't had to charge it yet (going off the initial charge it had from factory).
The keyboard works great, device tilts wonderful and while i'll admit, it's not the easiest to open one handed, it's still possible.
Nothing like the TP2 if anyone is wondering, it's alot slicker, feels better, works better.
WARNING!!!
Do NOT install and run the free HTC app "Connection Setup" with the Sprint Arrive.
I had to hard reset multiple times until I narrowed it down with Sprint Tech Support (who said they had an HTC Tech Rep on site during this launch). If you run it with Sprint as your carrier it will lockout your data connection until you hard reset (wifi will still work though). It took me a while to figure out which app screws up while on the phone with them, but it's definately this app and they confirmed it with an Arrive they had on hand. They still haven't removed it from the Marketplace yet, so here's your fair warning.
Hopefully this will save someone a lot of time and frustration after setting up your phone, only to have to redo it all over again. Cheers.
I am the Arrive advocate at my Sprint store, and I can confirm that I had the same issue with the HTC connection setup program. After hard resetting the phone my data connection came right back, but DO NOT download that program as of this point.
I was getting download speeds between 71kbps and 300kbps. I used the HTC connection setup and it also borked the data. It took me 2 hard resets and like 8 tries forcing data provision until it worked again.
I'm still getting piss poor download speeds and so it my TP2 that is on the same plan. I'm calling Sprint tomorrow to have an engineer look at my account settings. The Sprint store employee said he could do nothing if it was working at all. Had mine since 3/18.
Thanks Savage for the heads up! I was looking at that app until I read your posts.
