Mods have a life and are volunteers, and as such just can't police the forum constantly. I would recommend that you don't browse the forum on the weekend if you don't want to see so many noob posts. Seems like they come out in force on the weekends, and usually the mods are off trying to have a weekend. These things have been said 1000 times before. It is frustrating, i know that of course, but these posts really have little value. If you don't have anything to actually contribute through the posts then it's best if we just don't say anything.
@ OP
Questions like this should be posted in an preexisting thread, either the rom you are using, or wherever you got your themes from, there could even be a thread on the topic already...i have not looked, but doing so helps to reduce the clutter. Plus it's a forum rule.

[Request] allow original poster to close his own thread...

Please allow posters to close their own thread. It's ridiculous! What is so harmful of us closing our own threads?
I think it is beneficial, for example:
1) OP feels harassed: closes thread
2) OP learns that there was already another, more prominent thread of the same issue: closes thread
3) OP wants too closes his upcoming software update but doesn't want to read other's post issues that he has fixed on the next version.
etc...
Why can't we close our own threads? Delete our own posts?
You should posted this on Sticky: (requests) From the Users to the Mods & Admins in About xda-developers.com section
This thread is the perfect example where you can´t close your mistake

I think that Orb has several comps and as many arms as an octopus
Getting back to reality tho..... i agree in that we should be able to close or delete or own threads, i mean how many times (no matter how experienced you are) have you posted something after too much wine/beer then re-read a post in the morning and thought....... [email protected]#K..... i obviously didnt read that properly or didnt grasp what was being said through the haze of ones ignorance/arrogance/confidence...... i mean, apart from orb we are all human and make mistakes yes?
Give us the choice to close/delete our thread once, What harm would it do, a mod could always change the action of closing the thread if they thought it could be useful at some time?

Yeah there was this one guy who posted in the Xperia forum and all he said was: DELETED (or something along that line)
I would understand how deleting one's post would harm the fact that the conversation becomes hard to understand due to the loss of dialogue. But maybe atleast add a feature to delete double posts, or a feature to disable double post until you wait 2 days.

Weather update

There is no automatic weather update in manila 2.5.19211... I have ticked the "download data automatically". I have also selected every one hr. but updates seems to happen only when manually going to the weather page or tab. I am using udk Leo R7.

Hi. Ok, i have recently seen various post where people are asking for help about a partiqular issue. Yet all the the time, u have been either rude or cockey and totally demotivating.
I can understand your fustration that some people may have not used the search function, have posted in the wrong thread, or ultimatley have started a new thread, but i feel that is not the way to respond. y dont u just point them to the right direction in a more friendly way?
we were all a newbie once...(well i still am Lol!!)
I hope u dont take it the wrong way, but i personally wouldnt like it if someone responded like that. As a senior member, we look up to you guys to try and help us and or point us to the right direction.

Thanks to all who don't use search and open directly a new thread, it is more difficult to find something for the searching people (like me), because you get a huge number of hits with irrelevant threads... Get it?
I don't want to demotivate but motivate to search and read. When you give directly a helping link, they stay doing it.
Seeing every time new opened threads from newbies with every time the same silly questions, that's very demotivating for us, the people who supposed to help you. And that's what you'r looking for here, somebody who wants to help you. We don't have to do it, but we like it because this forum is a bit like a hobby for us.
So, we can shoose, saying nothing more or trying to teach you how a forum works. I prefer the last thing... And if somebody like me (the bad one) point you in the right direction, it's not for beeing bad, but for getting a better usefull forum. You can see in my posthistory that it's really multiple times a day that new useless threads were opened...
Normally it's a work for the moderators, but they also have a live and can not be always here, because also them are doing this as a hobby. Be all glad that I don't be one of them or it was the same comment and also closing the thread directly.
I take some time for this post because I can quote him for futur use when I get comments again from not-readers, not-searchers, new-post-openers and silly-question-posters...
If you have really followed my posts, you know that I help a lot when the rules are followed a bit...
And do you know why I can help others? Because I read a lot...
I am using UDK R7, I get the updates,.. have you tried a hard reset see if that sorts it out...
Sorry that i posted to wrong section. I thought it was a problem with Sense and not the rom, reason being my posting to this section. I think hard resetting would be extreme. Will search and see if anything comes up.

I understand bro, all i was getting at was just try to put it in a nicer way, thats all. regarding "silly" posts or questions, yeah, i have seen some VERY silly questions and i think to myself "the human stupidity IS infinite"! and i understand that it is coz of those posts/questions, ppl can get fustrated as it does clutter the forum.
I know you have helped alot of ppl, continue to do so.
i admit i personally havnt had alot of input in the forum as i still am a newbie, and anytime i have thought of answering a question, i fall back thinking if i am giving the right or wrong answer as i dont wanna make a fool out of myelf just being honest bro.

Icon Bar on Pure

I'm sure there's a post related to this, but I haven't been able to locate the information.
I have an ATT Pure version of Topaz
My question is the icon (slider) bar on the phone has a blue background behind the icons and it wont go away. I'm new to making mods to the phone say is there a cab out there to chang this? and or if a file what do I do in order to add it into the phone and update this blue bar. I'd prefer it to be clear and allow my wallpaper to show through it.
Thanks for your time and help

Koen-ronse, these forums are littered with you telling people to search for things. You can see that some people are noobies and don't yet know the terminology or even the language, but you persist. I have checked your posts and sure enough about 50% of these relate to you telling people off for not searching. Please stop it. I waste more of my time reading your unhelpful posts like this than those of other people.
Triton 360 - it is not the transparant SLIDER you need to find, it is the transparant CURTAINS. Depending on what Manila you have will depend on what you will need. Check your manila type in the settings tab of your touch flo. Then search for the right one for your phone. If your TouchFLO 3D number starts with 2.0, then you will be able to use the file attached here. You can of course try it anyway, but if you do, be sure to back-up first.

I'm from Belgium. Here we speak Dutch, French and a bit German. Most of my English I've learned here and on the internet in general by reading and even now at the moment my online Google translator is opened... So no excuse for that...
But even with the exact words it's difficult to find the right thread or post if you're searching something. And that was not a problem about 2 years ago. That's started with all the new users now. It takes a little work, but if everybody does a little effort, this forum can be a strong instrument again...
Before htc was only buyed by people who were really interested. Now htc is a more commercial product. People buy it and thereafter they can not work with it. They are not interested, they just want that it works. So they don't read, don't search... They just want an instant solution or link for there problem... Result: 100's questions of the same type... It's really demotivating for people who love there device and want to learn and share knowledge here...
I really hope that mods can do something at that, but i'm afraid it's a hopeless situation. I'm allready happy if I can prevent somebody of opening a second useless thread, even the first one is allready one to much...

[REF] New to XDA? Questions about flashing ROMs? Please read this before posting!

Lately I have seen so many "what rom is best for my first flash" or "Help me decide what rom is best for me" threads and they are POINTLESS! Granted there are an abundance of new and old custom roms, everyone has different experiences and opinions on what rom is best.
So... NOOBS:
If you want to know what rom is best for YOU do the following:
- Go to the Android Development Section and read through different [ROM] threads to see what features will work best for you. I have also found it useful to read through the last couple of pages to see what other users think about the current version of the rom.
- If you don't know what certain terms in the rom thread mean or affect (ie. kernel, modem, OC/UV, Gps tweaks) locate the search bar in the top right corner of the page or browse through this page
- Once you have decided what rom you want to try out, you need to learn how to flash the rom. Most of the Developers post instructions but they can be confusing to some of the less experienced flashers. nbs11 has posted a thread about how to do this here and Connexion2005 was nice enough to make videos of the general steps: Flashing back to stock using odin3 , 3 Part video series for flashing roms: video 1 , video 2 , video 3
- Now that you know how to choose and flash a rom just try out different roms until you find one that you like and gives you all the features you are looking for.
- If you find the theme of a certain rom ugly or obnoxious, head over to the Captivate themes and apps section and look through different [THEME] threads until you find one that you like. Make sure the theme is compatible with the rom you have just flashed or are planning to flash.
- If you accidentally brick your phone, read How to unbrick the captivate or if that doesn't work, Unbrick the captivate for only $0.99
-Some useful links other members have posted:
One-Click Root - root your captivate in one click!
Build #1010 or above flash back to stock
My hopes of this thread are to save the Captivate general section from becoming a section full of useless threads. So if you are new, please use these steps and do the research to find a Rom that is right for YOU!
Cheers,
Alex

Eh....Ii think a lot of us are guilty of expecting too much from "noobs." I remember being new and told to scour hundreds of pages of indecipherable text. Yeah right. I just want to flash my phone! Obviously not everyone does it. I hate to say it, but the forums are not very noob friendly. I recently tried suggesting an idea about organization of themes.....but no one even replied to my idea. Last I checked (correct me if I'm wrong) but the wiki is just a link to the sub forums. Someone tried to organize Rom features....but I don't think it hasn't been updated in a while. But I haven't checked
I would still like to create an easy to browse page full of apk's. Maybe I can find some time and a place to upload.....

Sure we might expect too much, but I think we should at least give them some guidance to flashing new roms. Since there is so much information out there it can be quite overwhelming to newcomers, which is why I tried to summarize and compile the best information I know of here.
I think your ideas of compiling themes into a one stop shop would be awesome if you kept it updated. I personally would just start a new thread and divide it into the most popular Roms out at the time, and paste links to whichever ones worked for that rom under the heading.
Gave you a 'thanks' and, AMEN!
Stickied, thanks for your contribution
very good useful information

To be honest, I have never flashed cog so I am not sure. But here is what I ALWAYS do, and everything works out for the different roms i have flashed.
1. Backup Apps and App data with TiBackup (not system data!!!)
2. Put phone in download mode
3. Open odin3 on computer
4. Plug phone in to computer, wait for odin to say "added"
5. Press start and wait to see if a blue line starts to apear on the phone
6. If the blue line appears wait for odin to finish, if it does not unplug the phone and hope it has not bricked. See the bottom of the OP if your phone is bricked.
7. Once rebooted, use one click root to root phone
8. Open droid explorer and move the CWM update.zip (see attachment to this post) to your phone as well as the rom you are flashing
9. Boot into recovery and "reinstall packages" usually twice until you get into CWM recovery
10. navigate to install zip from sd > choose zip from sd > (rom zip) > yes
11. once done click go back > reboot phone
12. If it asks you to convert data and partition click the first choice, something like convert all data and files, wait for it to finish
13. enjoi!
*NOTE* this assumes you have the correct drivers installed on your computer and that you have tested to make sure they work. I am not responsible if you follow these instructions and fubar your phone.

I am not Canadian and haven't used a Canadian device, so I would not be able to tell you. Sorry.
It is what it is
I'm a bit torn by the thread topic, but I do understand. What lead me to this thread was the realization that I was prohibited from submitting a post on the Android Dev forum. It would have been my first post, as I had been testing and writing down the results of my experiences with flashing ROMs that are currently offered. After doing some reading, I found that a minimum of 9 posts were required before posting priviledges available for the dev forum. A little disappointed, but I could deal with that...until I read the opening of this thread. On one hand, I understand that every post has its place and in order for a forum to run smoothly, respect and etiquette is paramount. However, the tone of the post had a kinda, "don't interfere in grown folk business" feel to it; a noob-tolerance, but "stay in your place-ness" IMHO. We were all noobs at some point. Perhaps it's a little easier for some to remember than others. Like I said, I understand. Both sides (Moderators and noobs) have to put themselves in each others shoes to make it work.

This thread is not discouraging noobs from posting or being a part of the forum, in fact following the guide will do the opposite by getting them involved in rom discussions with other members.
I am encouraging noobs to try things for themselves instead of relying on what other people claim to be the "best rom" for them. This was not meant to be an "elitist thread" simply because I haven't even been here that long, just trying to de-clutter the captivate general forum.
I have to throw a wrench into this system.....sorry....there seems to be a lot of complaints about posts in the wrong area. This happens A LOT. I have to take the"noob" side for a minute. Maybe instead of everyone jumping on new members, we find a better way to organize the information. Searching sucks, admit it. I know what I am looking for so I should be able to drill down through the forums to find it. I tried searching for a specific email.apk and gave up after 10 minutes of flipping through posts. There are all walks of people in the development forums. After all, that is where the good stuff is kept. So of course questions are going to be raised there. You are never going to win the war against new members not knowing the culture of this forum. Instead, let's start getting some ideas together on how we can make it more user friendly for everyone.

Ok so I have to ask, did you even read this thread?
The sole purpose of this thread was to guide new users to flashing new roms, that way they would stop making new threads in the captivate general section asking other users which rom is best.
No where did I mention anything about the development section or new members posting in the wrong section.
If you can't find things with search then try altering your search methods, ie change the "sort results by" drop down box to Relevancy. Often times I just do a google search of "xda (whatever i am looking for)" without the quotes and find what I am looking for in a matter of seconds or minutes.
If you feel like the forum is unorganized, do something about it like I did, don't just sit on your ass. Start a thread with all of the relevant .apk's you think need to be compiled while allowing other users to contribute or don't complain.
I did, but it sounds like many threads I've read in the past over and over again. I could have swore I've read this topic several times here, but perhaps I am mistaken. I follow several forums here at XDA and it is extremely possible my frustrations lie from reading this topic in multiple locations, not just within the Captivate section.
After searching around, I realize that there are not as many threads like this within the Captivate section as I had thought. My apologies for coming off wrong; however,
I do feel like some of the repositories here are disorganized, and have even tried mentioning it, but my thread got absolutely NO response, and it was in what I thought would be the correct section (asking about a list of apks in the Themes and Apps Section). Ah, oh well. Guess my fuse has been a little short recently. I wish I had more free time than just the 15 minutes here and there. I REALLY want to work on sorting the WiKi, but I'm married, so I've ALWAYS got other things to do.
Now that I feel I've completely torn the thread off topic, I'm going back to work

Thanks for the response. Didn't mean to be overly critical of the thread. Simply wanted to express how both sides of the argument can be seen as valid and relevant. I've seen harsh criticisms from seasoned contributors as well as inconsiderate inquiries from new posters that indicate no effort to find an answer prior to posting. No offense intented and thanks for your contribution to the community.
Maybe you can change the thread topic to sound a little less hostile towards new members. New xda users read this first or New posters or anything but "n00bs"

Suggestion Thread

Suggestion Thread
Thought it was about time we had a thread that you can make suggestions on how to improve the Droid forums or anything you feel needs changing in the Forums.
And Please no Stupid or Imposable suggestions
Thanks Guys
Lufc
Oh. BTW, Can you sticky the IRC Chat thread and the EE4 How To Root thread. Meant to mention that in my letter and forgot.
Ok people Lets break this down. LUFC has no power to change the site, how it works, the search engines, the way it looks, the name of it, etc etc. He can however, lock, unlock threads. Move threads. Change other's post to remove profanity, sexual content, derogatory statements ....... He can also ban and unban people from the Droid Charge forum. If you have any other questions, Let me know. I'll get with him offline. He has 4 forums to Mod and doesn't need to be bombarded with stuff like, "Can you Change my siggy size?" No he cannot. So don't ask for stuff that changes XDA website as a whole. If it does not pertain to the Droid Charge forum, or if you are questionable if its a question for LUFC. ASK ME FIRST. I'm very easy person to get along with and always willing to help.
I agree w/ Dragonstalker. we need more stickys. the basics, like booting to recovery, using odin, cwm etc. things that appear in too many threads.
I agree more stickies, a lot of import things that have been explained get pushed to the bottom and then people ask again.
Also, I do not know if you have the authority to do that but make a roms section. Keep Dev for fixes and tweaks. If that can be done i'd say a help section too. I do suspect you can't and it is admin set. I say this because if it's something enough people want in this forum then we can contact the admin
other than that keep up the good work mod
Here are my requests that I've felt are really needed.
Unlock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
That is hands down the best and easiest guide to follow and without it I would not have been able to root/ROM/lagfix my Charge, there was really no need for it to be locked in the first place.
Sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144885
Awesome mod, haven't encountered any problems with it at all. Just a simple reboot into CWM and install .zip from SD card and it's finished!
Thanks for the suggestions and the impossable ones
Just one point on the stickys if we stuck everything that was of importance we would have the first page full of stickys so what we do is to have a Roll up Sticky Thread and this has been kindly done by nitsuj17 HERE
Called
{List} Roms/Kernels/Mods/Themes 7.10.11

and because all the info is in that page and a link to them it should be your first point of call if you need something.
But if you do see anything that needs adding to the roll up thread then please do get in contact.
And just to Answer knyghtryda Question he Suggested the Mod for the camera shutter to be a sticky but as you can see in the Roll Up Thred it was already stuck but thanks for the suggestion knyghtryda
And scarygood536 suggested A separate area for ROMS but XDA will not allow this but the roll up thread is broken down into sections and all the roms are listed in once place thanks scarygood536
sticky titles
I am kinda new here, but it took me awhile to figure out what nitsuji's sticky was all about. It would be good to maby change the title a little to say that it contains "how too's" in it so the newbies like myself can go there first to find answers! just a thought!
P.s. I love this site!
Still going to request that the linked thread gets an unlock :] There was really no need for it to be locked in the first place.

It's Locked because the instructions are already there. The only thing the post by others have done in that thread is cause confusion to those that are new and take away from the OP.

I think we need automated spell checking... haha j/k.
It would be nice to sticky a request thread or something of that nature. If there even is one. That way some people can put in there input about stuff to add to roms and other tweaks that developers could try and work on. I think this would be a lot easier than having a hundred random threads with requests on them.

Or you could just make your suggestions on the ROM's thread. After all, that is what the threads for each individual rom is for

I meant for more general stuff that will work with all roms and not just one specific rom. As in if no one made the camera app where you could take a picture with the power button some one could have put in the request in this thread.

PM me more specific about your ideal and i'll work on it.
Any chance on a FAQ subsection in the Development section? Might make it a little more clear as to where questions go. I see them posted in Development all the time

Not really much you can put in the dev section as far as FAQ's. Dev section is only for devs. If people are posting questions in there, which i can't do anything about. Its just because they are not looking in the General section and reading welcome message.

Oh ok. I just figured if there was a section titled FAQ or Questions it might help
Requesting a sticky on; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186798
I understand you don't want to clutter the front page but that's a nice collection of all the dialer codes confirmed to work for the Charge. Really useful, IMO.
