Difference 'SD-install' and 'internal storage install' - Touch Cruise General

Because i cannot find a clear answer on my mindbreaker i do open this thread. Can someone please inform me about the characteristics of an install on internal storage (i recon flashmemory) and on an install on the SDcard?
What's to prefer? I would think its mostly a speedissue (in advantage of the SD), but maybe there are other circumstances to deal with in this issue (besides the physical storageamount of course)?

i have had a lot of problems with the sd-card. everytime I remove the card I loose some programs, programs seem to take up more space when installed on external memory, but I have not seen a speed difference. I have got one question to add to this. whats the read/write limit on the internal memory?

Sometimes people are loosing files on SD card or the card is not readable anymore. It never happened to me, but there's a thread about this topic somewhere here. And of course you should never remove the card while the device is turned on. This can cause the loss of data, maybe thats the reason why dysolve was loosing some programs?
But the most important thing is:
NEVER install a program on card which is running after a reset or after waking up the device. Windows needs some time to find and initialize the card, if a program is autostarted and the card is not ready Windows may freeze. The same is for ringtones. If the device is in sleep mode and a call comes in and the ringtone is on card then Windows will not find the ringtone that fast. In this case it will not freeze but its possible that its not ringing.
I installed a lot of applications (i.e. Mobipocket, all ebooks and so on) on card, but all autostarted apps I installed on internal memory. The same is for the alarm clock, its running while the device is in sleep mode. If the alarm clock program would be on card the device would either crash or the alarm would not go off. Both would bring me in a bad situation because then I would come to late to work and the boss is not allowed to come late

Raphael kills SD-Cards??

Hello everyone,
i own a Raphael since January and in this time it allready killed 2 SD-Cards.
The first one about 4 months ago.
Suddenly in the middle of usage the Raphael froze and i could not get it started again. even after a hardreset it was stuck in the bootscreen.
after a lot of trying and finally removing the sd card it bootet again without a problem.
the card was not readable anymore in any of my devices or windows boxes.
i thougth myself. well can happen even when a card is only half a year old got a new 8GB card and forgot about the incident.
yesterday while listening to some podcast suddenly the sound died. taking out the phone i found out it did not reacted to any power button presses or anything the screen stayed black.
after a softreset the phone worked again but took about 5 minutes to get in a usable state and the programms installed on the sd card where not aviable anymore.
taking a closer look i found that the card was not displayed in file explorer anymore.
gave it a try with my mp3 player. same result no card was found.
today in the morning i gave it a try on the pc with an sd-adabter. but also no result, wondows does not even recocnizes any device being plugged in. tryed a few data recover tools but non of them found the card.
someone has similiar experiances or any tips how i could get my data back from the card?
i guess the phone has to be send back for maintainance, but i doubt that they will find anything, if they accept it at all.
I have changed 4 sd cards because of similar problems. But the problem is most likely because of the fragility of high capacity microSDs, I wouldn't blame Raphael. Try other manufacturers (and try to find the ones that are not just rebranded)
I've had many issues with sd card corruption, but have solved some of the issues. Here's my advice (fwiw):
1. Get a card scanner, and regularly scan your catd. I do it everyday (takes 5 min). I use Wizcode Scandisk. It fixes errors and dumps out files that can be opened in notepad. It's worth looking at them, as it helped me find the multiple sources of corruption that I had.
2. Don't put your PIE cache on the card.
3. Change all 'save' paths (esp. the camera) to main memory.
4. Store any programs you use a lot on main memory.
5. Do NOT have any programs that run constantly on the sd card.
6. Do NOT put Fingerkeyboard on the sd card (major problem for me).
Basically, my advice is to use sd cards for storage. The Raphael has a lot of memory-use it for programs. I haven't had to format my card in about 4 months. I was doing it every couple of weeks for a while.
well basically i was using my sd card as a storage place for movies and podcast + podcastplayer prog.
and was using the player more or less the whole day.
i used the same card (and the other one before) also in my mp3 player when the raphael or the bt headset run out of power and there is no power outlet aviable to recharge. and twice the card failed in the rapahel.
when i got a new card, i also found that the card is working 100% on pc and mp3 player, but the raphael still can not see any sd card.
i really blame the phone and also assume that it now has a defective reader.
have to give it back to repairs as soon i have flashed the original firmware and make my way back to the store
You should scan the disk to find out the error sources. It may be something simple that causing them. Also, if your phone freezes when listening to music, you may want to either wait it out, or remove the card before soft resetting. You should do some searches on card corruption. There are lots of threads here that can be helpful.
many Sdcard and usbStick manufacturers got lowlevel format tools you can download and get cards not otherwise working in cardreaders on pc back to life
would love to get those cards working again. but i also would love to get the data back that was on them.
but the problem is the cards do not even appear on the pc, or any other device i have that can read/write them (usb card reader, digi cam, mp3 player)
its just as if nothing is ever inserted in the reader.
the low level format tools don't rely on windows driver model to detect cards
Flash Format (cnetx) has always been able to re-format my card, even when my pc couldn't recognize it and neither could my fuze. It has a free trial that works fine.
I haven't experienced any of these issues myself. But I'm sure I will now that I said that....
i gave that flash format a try, but it even failed to install. was one of those weird .exe installers. on the pc side it told me install was sucessfull, but on the ppc side was just a promt "installation failed".
a cab install would be nice, but without a working cardreader in the phone i guess would also not be of much help. i guess cuz of that that prog will not help me much. the reader in the phone is broken. cant read any cards, even brand new unused ones that are fine everywhere else just dont show up on the phone.
as for other "low level format tools" my search was quite unsecessful. i was looking at the sandisk and the transcend page (the suppliers of my 3 cards) but could not find anything.
google just found more request for this kind of program but not really somewhere where i could get it.

Check C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\CNETX-you'll find the cab in there. There will be several-you want the PPC-Arm one. It should install fine.
Card Freeze
Yeah I had the same thing happen. Raphael would not boot unless I removed the card and as soon as I placed the card back into the sd slot it would lock up. Unlike you I was able to get on of my PCs (either the XP Pro or the Vista Pro) to recognize it but all I could do was format it.
OK I like the idea of moving all the data to the main however I'm an old Windows CE guy (yeah I had a Jornado) and the memory used to be shared between program and storage. The device would allocate from the other when more was needed. If I place all the stuff I want into the Raphael main memory won't that lower the amount of RAM I have for running programs or vice versa? I really don't know if the memory is fluid since all I get when I look into the memory is one listing total storage and one total program, there is no slider bar like there used to be in windows ce.

The storage memory on the device is flash, not ram, so you don't lose program memory changing the save paths to main memory (if that's what you meant by moving data to main memory).
I never had any issues with my storage cards (sd and cf) on my 2003 device. I don't think it was the device, but rather the cards. The big, 16 gb cards just seem to be less hardy than a 1-2 gb card. I had all my apps on the storage card (including stuff like magic button), and never had a problem. But, jeez, the 16 g microsd is sensitive as hell. It gets minor bits of corruption at least once a week. I scan it everyday to avoid it crashing, which has helped, because I've gone 4 months without formatting it. One thing that I've found screws it up royally is doing a lot of file/directory operations over active sync on a pc. I don't know why, but cutting and pasting files from one folder to another in the sd card frequently results in lost clusters. Renaming folders is also a bad idea.
OK Flash
Well I guess I didn't explain it correctly. According to HTC the RAM is 288MB with a ROM of 512MB. So I'm really confused since according to the start>settings>system>memory the total for my storage and my program = 549MB which is of course more than 288 and 512. So when I load applications into my device and get a choice of main or storage card when it was a large file (some apps I use were 14 megs or more) I would choose the storage card.
My old experience with Windows CE was whatever memory was on the device was shared with both the program and storage, so I would put as much as possible on my storage card. However in windows 6.1 or higher it lists two separate columns for Program and Storage with: Total, In Use, and Free. So when I install apps I presumed they went into the storage area. Am I mistaken? I figured Program on the device meant how much is currently in use. Kinda like opening multiple windows on a PC. I notice it's low when at once I have 4 applications open on my windows mobile device so that's what I thought Program memory was.
Therefore does installing to the Main, when given a choice during program installation. where does it get installed ROM, RAM? Why is my total memory higher than RAM or the ROM
Any insight would help me decide the best location for my program installation to not corrupt the data, or have the flash card screw me up either.
288 MB is the total amount of system ram. A large amount is not user-accessible, it's used by the kernel/OS/Page-pool, so you don't see it reported. It's still there, though. The rom memory is 512 MB, but the actual memory in rom is subtracted by the storage memory so you see the amount of user-available memory. With 2003 devices, if the battery ran down, you lost all of your data, because the storage memory was in RAM (except perhaps for a little flash disk space). But with a fuze, you can pull the battery out, and not lose your data.
Totally confused
OK your right about the 2003 devices which is why I placed most of my stuff on a storage card. However why is my total reported memory 549MB more than the 512 ROM? Also when I install stuff to the device where does it get stored, the 512 ROM? Are you saying that the 200mb of Program being shown is 288 RAM minus the 88 being used to run the OS?
So are you saying its safe to install all my apps onto the device and I won't lose anything if the battery runs out?
Yeah, I've been saying that for about 3 weeks, lol! They got rid of the volatile storage memory with winmo 5; we're onto 6.5 now, and it's a thing of the distant past. I you don't believe me, pull out your battery (there's no backup battery on the device) and see if it causes a hard reset.
This is not an uncommon problem with digital cameras, as well. It's complicated, but the bottom line is this: whenever you buy an SD/micro SDHC/etc. card, you should do a full format of it on your COMPUTER, then put it in your device.

Is it IGO 8 or my Memory Card have problems?

Hi people, everithing was workin fine until last week.I have igo8 installed on my memory card(Kingston 8gb)for about 4-5months and before some days makes me crazy, everytime i start it the aplication ask me to install it :O and to use the navigation i was forced to make all the steps everytime .I format Memory Card and install igo 8 again,no problems until yesterday, igo icon was blank and when i tap on it the phone freeze .I think the problem is in neotouch but i hope is in memory card or igo8.What do you think people?
here is screenshot of igo8 icon http://img80.imageshack.us/i/screen001ua.png/
same thing happens to me ,with other programm(Vito Notes).
i think it has to do with the s200 reading the SD.
Most definite it's a problem while reading the memory card. First step reboot and try again. Second step: Check the memory card in another computer. Third step: Remove any software which might "grab" the card handler. Hope that helps.
I always make all these steps without the last one. What you mean with "Remove any software which might "grab" the card handler"?And one more thing, when i check the files in IGO folder i found something crazy, files that i cant delete :O,here is the screenshot
Ouch. That looks like a corrupted file system on your card. If you got a valid backup from your card you should reformat the memory card and then copy all files back onto it. If not, backup all files (which are still readable) to a PC and then reformat the card, copy all other valid files back and reinstall the missing files.
Answer to the "grab" statement: Programs like CardExport or any other program which allows reading the memory card via USB connection will hide the memory card from your device while active by "grabbing" access to the memory card.
"That looks like a corrupted file system on your card".Yes,i think you are right. This is not the first time this happening, maybe is better to buy another card, because i format the card 3-4 times and have problems everytime?
Yes. It's not worth the trouble to use the faulty memory card any longer. (Life is too short ). Good luck.
Thanks,i will bye another one probably SanDisk i never had any problem whit. Now i am using Kingston and dont recommend it!Thanks again for helping me

Soft reboot when Ext SD card in Cap

I am having maddening issues with my Cap (running KJ3 rooted). When the SD card is inserted, it becomes very unstable and soft reboots - usually on startup (and repeats ad infinitium). If I start up without the SD card, I am stable, but I have many apps that KJ3 defaults to installing on the SD card. The problem occurs whether I insert the card before boot up, or insert after it has started up.
I have the same issue with 2 different cards. I tried a brand new class 10, 16GB. I restored apps from my TiBu backup which I had copied from the old card to new (on PC) - not sure if that is the issue...
Anyone have any ideas?
Well, if I am not mistaken, apps which are installed to SD are not on the removable SD card, but on the captivate's "Internal SD", which is the 16GB... well actually about 13GB after the phone's "internal Storage" partition is lopped off of it.
I would try a reflash and then test it before you install the apps.

I've been down that road more times than you can imagine - flash, wipe in recovery, and reload. I had thought that it was the .androidsecure directory on the external SD that held the parts of the apps that move. what is clear is that this only happens with the external SD card inserted and mounted, and almost always happens within 10 minutes of startup or the previous cycle, i.e., before any program launches other than TouchWiz and often before any email sync (this is my work phone, syncs with Exchange 2007 server).
I did get a list of all apps that have the start on boot permission, not sure if any of these are regular problem children, they are, on my phone (not sure why some of them need that permission, but that's a different story):

Did you move the apps back to internal memory after restoring them? Iirc, when using the later leaks, they install all the apps to external sd(if there is one in the phone).

Going to start doing that, the next time I have a stable spell with the card in. The problem is that the failure is intermittent. It doesn't fail every time I have the SD card in, but every time it does fail, I have the card installed, and it usually takes awhile before it starts working again. Thinking about another factory reset and then reinstalling apps without TiBu help or the card in, at least until I get all of the ones that startup in main memory to eliminate that possibility.
Of course with the Epic finally getting the official upgrade, kind of want to hold off until the Captivate image finally comes out, that way if it is a hardware problem. I'll be on stock for the warranty exchange.
Arggh... maddening problems continued.
The phone stayed up (with SD card in for about 16 hours), during that time I moved every app with the permission to launch on boot to main memory. I then had the kernel panic, or whatever the soft boot actually is, occur while in Pocket Informant.
I then watched it cycle through display PIN-lock screen, start media scan, screen shut off, and then re-boot seven times, approximately every three minutes while never touching the phone. Some times I saw on the status bar "Media scan completed", sometimes it had the icons.
After powering down, and starting up from off - it is now up again, who knows for how long.
So unfortunately, I can now say this is not just a startup issue; I can also say that something that happens during startup (or at least the kernel launch) creates the conditions for this reboot cycle to occur.
Anyone out there have any ideas?

question what kind of sd card do you have in there as in what class? class 10s can cause issues . wait i see .. have you tried a class 4 or 6? I had mutiple 10s cause issues like this and exchanged for a 4 and all issues went away .. or you can format the card on your computer using fat32 and set to 32k sectors but that did not work for me ..

I had a 16GB class 4 (Patriot) in. I just replaced it with a PNY 16GB Class 10. Both have had the same issues (currently using the Class 10). Both were formatted in the phone itself - so assuming they are FAT32.

[Q] Apps gone

Hi after having to switch my phone off, when I turned it on again it appears that all the apps I moved to the SD card are no longer there. I have just spent some time downloading them from the market again.
Question is why has this happened and how do I stop it from happening again
Thanks in advance
Solution
Hi Nexus.
I think you'll find that the apps still exist, they're just fragmented on the SD
card. This has happened to me plenty of times.
I've found it's only apps that are installed on the SD card and it's never
happened with apps on the phone's internal ROM.
A good way to check is to go into: Settings- Applications- Manage applications-
then tap the SD card tab. That list shows all of your apps installed on the SD
card. I found that when apps here got fragmented/corrupt they didn't show their
original app icon. Instead they showed the stock android app icon. This is a good
way to tell if the missing apps in question are still there but are just fragmented.
The way to solve this, the way that's worked for me, is to plug the phone into a
pc and mount the SD card as a disk. Then on the PC access the SD card via
explorer and right click- properties- tools- then click de-fragment.
This may take up to 30 mins as it's not as fast as a HDD.
From using this technique my apps have always returned and I can use them
with no problems again.
I've also noticed that this issue only happens if I restart or turn the phone off. I
don't understand what is corrupting the apps as the SD card is mounted
correctly and is the one supplied as standard.
I hope I've helped, and I guess this will save you from re-downloading all of your
apps again.
I'm happy to hear anyone's thoughts/suggestions onto why this is actually
happening in the first place too.
Cheers, Dms
Hi thanks so much for the answer. This has been bugging me for ages and even though I have been searching I have not had any joy solving it until your reply.
As you said it only seems to happen to apps on the sd card, and I would like to know why they are not "persistent" There must be a developer who understands the Android system who can explain why this happens and what you can do to make apps you have on your sd card permanent.
As you said it only happens to me when I re start my phone.
Thanks again for the answer
Hi. It's no problem. Yes I havn't seen anything about this issue being mentioned either.
I'd like to know what's causing it. Whether it's a hardware fault or something in the software.
It's a real pain having to hook it up to my pc to sort it out. Especially when I'm away from a pc, I can't use half of my apps.

Apps disappearing after reboot?! [CM6]

Ive had a weird problem the last day or so, when I reboot my device, apps mysteriously go missing. Each time I reboot, like 5 or 6 different apps disappear. This only happens to SD card apps though. This started happening a few days ago but yesterday it got alot worse AFTER I had reformatted my card. Could there be something wrong with my SD card? The apps still appear to be installed in "manage applications" but they look like "com.aac.cachemate.demo" as the name of the app, instead of "Cachemate" and etc...?
did you use link2sd ?
com....whatever in manage applications usually means, that the apk file is missing, while the application data is present
the mess as described, can be seen if your ext partition is mounted too late ...
nadlabak has some fix about it
https://github.com/nadlabak/android...mmit/e5b9b3195687e04af7a7929f8637e77e1efae9a1
but i can't remember where is part of setting the property, after checking and mounting the whole card ...

I did not, I used the standard apps2sd built into CM6. Every time I reboot, different apps are missing and then some come back that were missing the time before...They all still appear in manage applications though so they might be intact but I'm not sure if all are, they show up with the default generic android icon, and weird names. "mobi.mgeek.tunnybrowser." (Dolphin Browser) and "net.flixter.android" (Flixter) etc...The storage sizes of the missing apps appear to be different then they are supposed to be. (Maybe)
(This might have something to do with it) Yesterday for hours (before I reformatted) the phone was stuck at "Preparing SD card, checking for errors" so I went online and followed the suggestion an xda member who suggested in another thread to delete the "fsck_msdos" file from "system /bin" which disables the SD card check to see if the SD card has been properly mounted and checked. It seemed to fix my other SD card issue for the rest of the day. could this be related?
Just share my experience , when I was in 2.1 , I used link2sd , and if I boot without sdcard , all my linked apps will happen like that , I think maybe this is the same case as apps2sd . So , what I do is just uninstalled all those apps , and reinstalled some of it ( it's quite annoying to reinstall over 100 apps ) . As you said , all those apps remained as it's package name , so I'm kinda sure our case is almost the same . But when I was in 2.2 , once I booted with sdcard inserted , but after boot completed , all my user apps dissapear , yes , ALL . But anyway , after scan for sdcard problem in OR , all my apps recovered , with no force close , just like nothing happen during the last boot . So also , try to scan for sdcard problem in OR .
It says my card is mounted (about half of my sd card apps show up) but when I bring up the gallery, it says "SD card unmounted or not present." When I try to unmount it in settings, it never unmounts, I just click "unmount" and nothing happens....

It sounds like you have corruption in your sdcard filesystem. I would take your sdcard out, put it directly into a Windows PC and run chkdsk (alternately fsck.msdos on a linux PC).

Ok I will run a chkdsk when I get some time to sit down at the computer later. I think it probably is corruption.

SD card fixed with error checking in windows!! Thanks!
Fast Boot option may be the culprit
The advice about checking SD card on Windows or Linux sounds good and I will keep it in mind, but I did not need to fix this sort of problem. I am not familiar with CyanogenMod (CM) in any version, but if it has a fast boot option, read on...
CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.
//// The (simple!) solution I tried that SEEMS to work (only time will tell!) is buried in the main Android Settings (accessed from the Menu button while in Home screen). Under "Applications" there is a setting "Fast Boot" that I checked long ago and forgot about (it seemed like a good thing to do at the time). The text warns "Turn off to use some Market apps" (that shows the age of my 2-yr old used phone and Android OS -- ohmygosh!-- because it refers to Market rather than Google Play Store!) Anyway, I unchecked the option and rebooted the phone.
Yes, it took a bit longer to boot (maybe a whole minute!), but after waiting about another minute ALL my home screen apps had normal icons and loaded properly. Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report back here on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!

(I am copying this post to other relevant threads, but will not post anything further elsewhere -- only there. This is a bit arbitrary (although this thread appears to be the most recent active one on this topic), but I hope this approach pleases the XDA sysops/admins)
Sorry for opening up old thread. My HDC Note3 clone phone having the same/similar issue. The phone have 8G ROM which partition into 2 different name, internal phone (1G) and SD card (5G). Whatever Apps that I install on the SD card will disappear from home menu every-time I re-boot using the power button. However, it it still there when the phone do their own reboot due to something
I try unchecked "Fast Boot" but disappearing act still happen. Any suggestion to resolve the issue?
