[Q] Does Raphael have the same GPS lag as Diamond? - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi guys,
I think the subject says it all...
I have a Diamond which suffers from serious GPS lag (not fix!). This means that when I'm driving, my car is always up to 50m ahead of what TomTom or IGO tells me that I am...
I'm thinking about changing my device as nobody seems to know the cause of this...
So, I wonder if Rapheal has the same issue or not...
HastaSSSS

Here's what i tested for you on the way to work...
Using TomTom6 (6.032), driving at 30mph, using the tip if the blue arrow as my position (same as i always used on TytnII) i would say my car was no more than 5m behind were i should be. No issue going down the right road or turn.

Same situation as johnk1973. No 50 meters lag, but aprox. 5 meters.

Same problem here on Raphael, TT7 is 50 meters behind. Will test it tonight if it also occurs with TT6.

Same here with tt7 and igo8....

Now this is going to get complicated....
I had Diamond before and NEVER experienced GPS lag.
I tried almost every official and cooked ROM and had no problems with GPS.
Recently I switched to Raphael....
And guess what... GPS lag !
I used my Diamond and Raphael in identical conditions, with the same app (iGO 8).
I'll try to test it more.
I'll post if I find anything useful to you.
Cheers,

Sh*t...that means Raphael is a "no go" for me...
Unless we solve the problem...whatever it might be...
Please keep on posting your findings about this issue...I like very much Diamond and Diamond Pro....but I'm not willing to have a device without 100% functionality...
HastaSSSS

I have a Touch Pro with iGo8 installed. I realised this "50m lag" on my business trip this Monday but I thought it was due to the speed of the car (I was driving very fast for the most of the time). Now I see the problem might be a little more complicated.
On the other hand the 50m is not so bad - I never had a wrong turn, the acoustic signalization of iGo8 is very good. Nevertheless, I would be glad if this could be fixed...
And another thing - I'm not sure if you are aware of the charging problem while using GPS. My Touch Pro actually stopped charging because of overheating and was running only on the battery. So be aware of this fact too.
But this is a different issue, I'm sure there is a thread for this.

I dont have the problem with TT6.

I second this issue, both with TT7 and IGO8 (haven't tried it with another one yet)

Guys I had GPS lag on TT7 when I fist used it (Only tried it for 5min) it was awful. Mainly everytime I turned a corner whilst driving.
Then I did the following changes:
\start\settings\system\external GPS -> Set GPS Program port COM4; Hardware NONE; Access Manage GPS automatically.
Hit ok, wait 10 secs, switch off the device and then soft reset.
Now go to TT7 change the GPS prefences, to use bluetooth device and selected COM4.
No my GPS is perfect now, no problems at all. Have tried it with two different ROMs and no problems.
I have TT7 installed on the main memory and the maps on an Sandisk 8GB Class 4 SDHC card.
Radio ROM is 1.02.25.19 if that helps? and AGPS is turned on a up-to-date.
BTW it was exactly the same when using google maps.

Did you also try it by just setting tomtom gps to bluetooth? I'll give that a shot anyway before going into the register... tnx for the tip

Please keep in mind that you'll get an update of your past position only once per second. This means: The faster your velocity the more inexact the position will be, because the distance you'll pass in this second becomes longer and longer:
@30kmph: ~8m
@50kmph: ~14m
@80kmph: ~22m
@100kmph: ~27m
@130kmph: ~36m
Additionally there is the inaccuracy which comes with GPS: In good times you may have ~10m divergence on average. But with weaker signal (which one may have driving in a city) it will become even more. So keep in mind that GPS will tell you, where you've been one second ago (plus the divergence).
By the time I get my Diamond Pro, I'll collate this at the same time with my X500, which has a build in Sirf3 receiver.

I am having a slightly different issue with my TP using iGuidance 4. Although the unit aquires a signal faster than any other device I have used in the past, it seems to lag or freeze as I drive. It will not update the time, speed or position unless I press a button or something on the screen. There is another thread on XDA (I think in the Diamond or Kaiser sections) that claims to have solved this issue, but the fix doesn't work on my Touch Pro (in fact it completely freezes my iGuidance requiring a soft reset).

Hi,
I'm using Ndrive and TomTom 7.
on NDrive I don't have any problem, it's fast.
on TomTom is slow..
I thing the problem is on TomTom using this GPS of Raphael.

these settings are the settings that are preset. Hence nothing changed. the lag on the diamond is bad but this is awful.

Using Igo8 very intensively with my TP, no lag at all. Compared it this morning with my VW passat stock nav system, and again, i notice no lag.

I have the settings in the posts above, and have very little lag. I am using QuickGPS instead of AGPS, but all else is the same. My main probklem is how long it takes to get a lock (much longer than on my old Kaiser), but since installing DCS's ROM and doing a hard reset immediately after that does seem to have improved - I often get a lock from cold within a minute now..
Rowan

I believe the reason that some people are getting horrible GPS lag while others get nothing has to do with the Radio ROM versions that came installed with the device. Most custom ROMS don't update the Radio ROM. It's 12am and I'm posting this from my TP, so I'll just tell you that the Radio thread is stickied in the Raphael ROM dev forum.

Dutty V4: iGO 2006 hangs

Hi all,
Has anyone noticed how iGO 2006 will hang if the GPS applet is set to allow Windows to manage it? This has worked flawlessly on all previous ROMs... any help greatly appreciated!
i have the same issue
Same thing happened to me...
It seems to get hung up on the startup screen
Hi !
Same issue here... application hangs if you configure gps. When configuered it does not even start anymore.
Posted it in dutty-thread. No replies :-(
I think it has something to do with the A-GPS reg tweak. I tried without tweak and it worked. Activated A-GPS -> stopped working. But I'm not really sure, cos after the 7th reboot I was bored of the startscreen so that i stopped my tests.
greets
really, when i turned off the a-gps igo works great now! i'm wondering if the fixing time now will take longer...
That did the trick! But really, what changed between V3 and V4 that caused this?
and: with every other rom i tried reg tweak and igo together worked.
same problem here
same things with me
a little off topic, but has anyone noticed that iGo 2006 is kinda choppy on the kaiser? I love the way it looks compared to tomtom but damn is it ever slow. also, if i exit a highway it takes like 10 seconds to realize i just exited the highway before it finally switches my position over from the highway road to the off ramp and if i set it to not stay on roads, the gps seems like its a lot to the left of where i actually am from the road vs the gps screen.. if those 3 things worked better, this gps would be perfect for me.
IGO8
Hi
I am running IGO8 on Duttys V4. It run nice and smooth no problems but still testing as only put it on this morning. Will give you a full update in a day or two.
I thought igo8 is not out yet?
Where is the difference in GPS handling in these two versions? Any ideas?
...works...
Hi all....
On my Kaiser, the iGO 2006 works fine with Dutty's ROM v4...
A-GPS: Disabled
GPS: NMEA (not SIRF!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Port: COM4
Baud: 57600
Best regards....
Camelot631
this sucks, assisted gps is great...
Hangs on incoming call
When I turn off AGPS iGo will work, however if I recieve and incoming call while iGo is running the PDA freezes and I have to do a soft reset. This was not the case on other ROM versions.

[PROB] TouchPro GPS lag problems

A lot of people have problems with the TouchPro GPS especially for pedestrian use...
From stock the TP GPS is quite unsable in car especially with TomTom 7 and totally unusable for pedestrian use.
After 2 weeks of reading and testing tweaks, here are the results of my tests and the applied tweaks to enhance the GPS performance
A. With Advanced config 3.2 http://www.touchxperience.com/fr/ou...ads/9-advanced-configuration-tool-32-cab.html
1. disable A-GPS
2. disable GPS logging
3. logfile name must be empty
4. old logfile name must be empty
5. maximum size of logfile must be 0
6 delete the files : \windows\GPSLogFile.txt and \windows\GPSLogFileBack.txt
7. it seems that if TomTom is installed on a fast microSD decrease the lag(have to test to be sure)
With those changes car usage will be quite perfect
B. Then edit registry with TotalCommander http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdpocketarm.cab
Under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\
- Drivers\GpsOneDevice\PollInterval -> 100 (default is 1000)
- Drivers\InputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
- Drivers\OutputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
- Drivers\SleepOnNoData -> 100 (default is 1000)
- Multiplexer\MaxBufferSize -> 512 (by default not present, you have to create it)
Tests to be done with buffers at 256...seems to be a little better
Tests to be done with other PollInterval value...seems to "drain" battery
With those tweaks pedestrian usage will be much better but not perfect...I explain.
You have to walk for a least 250m in order to have a reposition with mouvement on the map (before that, speed is always 0km/h) and then if you continue to walk there is quite no lag...and the speed reflect reality
...BUT if you stops you have to walk again for a least 250m in order to have a reposition with mouvement on the map and then if you continue to walk there is quite no lag...
Very strange indeed...
I hope this will help people...please test and feedback.
PS : tests were done with

I noticed GPS problems yesterday with Route66. Havent have time to test GPS lot before, just checked that it can find satellites and really works with Route66.
First while driving, Route66 got fix to satellite pretty quickly, but drop it then after couple seconds. Then couple secods of lag, again found satellites, couple seconds ok, drops again. This keeps going over no matter what, moving or staying stopped.
I then did soft-reset, no help. Then tried Google Maps with GPS, that worked no prob. After using Google Maps I returned to Route66 and strangely satellite fix was ok...
This might be just random satellite fix problem, but strange enough

Many of us have/had that issue so I can confirm you Its a device issue, not a satellite situation. The registry tweaks minimize that problem but I hope HTC solves the problem in his next driver/radio rom/... and the users hasnt to tweak their devices (95% of the users probably will never read this forum and they dont know how to "tweak" their devices
Thanks for sharing. I 'll check it.
Thank you!
I applied all the patches, my TP still doesn't want to find the sattelites...
F.....g hell!!! I tried anything,and morning I've got a fix with 5 satellites in 20secs,so it looks nice(yesterday evening I did the tweaks). But after 4 hours it can see 1-2 satellites,sometimes 3,very rarely 4 under blue sky. So 2 hours of my travelling from city-to-city I didn't get a fix! Co do pici s tym je!!??(sorry for slovak lng,but I cannot speak it english,because so wrong words english language doesn't have). I bought an useless technology and HTC is rolling on the floor laughing,how the customer is stupid. F..k them all with their technologies. Another thing is wifi...no comment is better. I will maybe buy an crazy Eten with Sirf3 and HTC with their stupid Qualcomm can go to hell. For what are all the technologies here,when they are working <20% of time? I am so angry on HTC,so when my kind of device will appear,I will immediately sell the Raph.

Did all that and the bloody phone is still not getting a fix on satellites...
I am confused in other way...
Why it does lock the satellites in 30seconds and it sees 8 sats.and few hours after it has problem with seeing 3 of them at the same place with same weather conditions? I believe,that tomorrow(when I will not needed to have the fix,anyway I will try it) will fix the satellites ASAP. Do the Raphael have a status-sensor,that knows,if I need it right now or not? That's my opinion,while it doesn't work,when I need it and works when I testing it...
I will s..t on whole GPS technology and I will trust the plain maps as before(unfortunately,that costs me some money/energy that I spend for that).
Totally amazing
This is just amazing. Thank you!
Now I get a fix in 10-15 seconds. Earlier it took several minutes... totally amazing...

tried this also and been driving around for almost an hour without results is that enough patience?
hmm, my gps was working normally, applied these patches and nothing changed..still working normally (no lags etc.)
Applied all the patches except one (I kept A-GPS on), and after testing with iGo it's working like a charm. With the latest QuickGPS data downloaded, it can still take - seconds to get a fix, but the positioning is accurate (no more 100-200m lag), the devices sees 4-6 satellites in the Belgian sky, and the navigation is finally usable on the Touch Pro. I'll make regular checks in the coming days and I'll report the results. Thanks for the tweaks!
With A-GPS enabled the GPS works great. I had it in my pocket with GPS tuner running while running in a forrest and he didn't lose my position and no lag. The problem: with A-GPS enabled TT7 loses the fix every second. Like 1 sec there is a fix, next there is not. And it keeps doing that. When I disable A-GPS it takes way longer to get a fix with TT7 but it holds the fix.
Tip: driving around makes it harder for the gps to get a fix.

ATT Fuze GPS hanging problem

Hi all,
I just got the Fuze and am having some strange problems with it's GPS. I am able to get a lock. However, the GPS data stream appears to be 'hanging' randomly.
I mean, after I get a lock, it would stream NMEA data for a few seconds, and then just randomly stops. I use the program VisualGPSCE (http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/default.htm) to see how many satellites I am picking up. This program has consistently worked on the iMate 8502, Epix, and my iPAQ 910. So I don't think it's a software problem. I am also experiencing the same problem with my GPS software, namely Garmin XT and OCN8. After a while. the program would announce that it has lost GPS lock.
Anyone experiencing this, and should I exchange it? Thanks for your feedback. Other than that, I was surprised at how much I like the device.

Having the same issue
Out of the box it was fine with Tomtom7 but since I sync'd up exchange, added a BT headset etc I am getting the same problem.
It does a toggle every 4 or 5 secs between GPS lock and no signal
Know it's not a TT issue since once it started this I sync'd my BT GPS puck and it's rock solid
Just saw that this GPS problem is a known issue with the Raphael on the various threads at xda-dev. It appears that a soft-reset seems to fix the problem, but will return later. Soft-resetting each time to use the GPS is an unacceptable solution.
Same problem with iGuidance 4.0. I would get a fix then the GPS signal will go away for a second or 2 and then comes back. This continues to happen in a 10 second interval.
I have also installed Google map on my phone and it works flawlessly.
Soooooo annoying.
Try some of these methods. I haven't tried them yet but will try as soon as i get a chance which would be tomorrow.

I have the same problem has anyone found a fix for this or something that works then always soft reset? This is so frustrating!
try a diff ROM. Stock Rom sucks!

Observation on GPS Problems - 4800BPS

Hi All,
Like many i've had numerous problems with my GPS. I came from a Tytn II so I know how fast the unit should lock and work. In fact I've done side by side comparisons with my wife's TyTn II and am fairly disappointed thus far.
For the longest time I couldn't even lock in less than 30 mins, after trying several ROMS and radios. I used TomTom, Garmin, and Igo 8 (which I love) and issues all around.
Finally I solved my locking problem by doing the simplest of things, set the baud rate in the settings of the 3rd party GPS apps (Igo in this case) to 4800bps. Now I reliably get a lock within 60-90 seconds. I still however have lag, but at least it's somewhat usable.
Anyways hope this helps others with my issue.
Are you using Quick GPS and updating it's data when it expires, are you getting a lock with a third party app (GPS Test or HTC GPS Tool or others) before running your nav software? In IGO, when changing from 4800 from say have you tried the highest (100k+ whatever not sure of the number) baud are you seeing much of a difference in your position on screen versus your actual position?
Everyone seems to have a different story when you ask them about their experiences with their GPS on their Raphael. >_>
Btw what ROM are you using? Have you tried Sleuths GPS cab? I'm not 100% positive I have the latest cab or I would post it but there are some settings in the registry that you can change that deliver somewhat of a better experience (in my case and many others) as far as position lag is concerned. I also use the highest baud settings as Sleuth recommended.
Many thanks to everyone who is going out of their way to do some working towards a fix for Raphael's flakey GPS.
im using the highest baud on my raphael as mentioned above by X2D. there are tweaks that can be done in the registry or just find a tweak cab that has compiled those tweaks.. remember to update quick gps when it expires.. with quick gps updated i get a fix in about 20-30 seconds.. and this also depends on what radio rom you have.. i have Radio version: 1.08.25.20.. i think it's the lates. well read the radio thread on raphael section and you'll find one suitable for you , i guess i've heard somemany say that some of the older versions works better and so forth.. if you have your phone security / cid unlocked you can try the latest radio rom from blackstone on your raphael which is to be the best so far at this date... well correct me if im wrong though.. well there are another option, hot start on gps but that might consume little more battery and so forth.. read more about it on this forum

Garmin is working properly on the TD2 but Garmin is superslow. I don't understand how Garmin could be de market leader of the US. maybe their PNA versions works flawlesly, but the mobile version is useless.
yeah, seems so in my TD2, although in my previous N95 I didnt notice this issues.
Also I wonder if im the only one with this problems, because I see so many people saying they are using this app, and nobody is talking about this freezing problem. The few threads I've found are realy old.
Just use g-confiq app and ur problem will solved ... Like mine ... Hehe ...

Hi,
I think it works properly, no freeze, but it quite (very) slow. Im using it for hiking, so I dont mind the slowness so much. But for car navigation its really useless...
Yes, the screen rendering is pretty slow in 3D mode.
But if you change to 2D mode (Plan view), then it's better and there isn't so much lag. I use if for in-car navigation and use 2D (Choose "Track Up") and it's OK though a Garmin PND would work much better. But then you can't use Google local search etc. and it isn't always in your pocket...or store GPS locations of you WinMo Contacts.
I moved from a Polaris (qvga) to Topaz (wvga) and I find Garmin XT renders the active route lines too narrow...there are dlls specific to wvga that got installed but I guess the pixel density wasn't sufficiently considered. Of course you can see a lot more on the Topaz but everything's a lot smaller unless you set a more zoomed in view.
Cheers
Garmin mobile xt 5 on my wife's TD2 works fine. infact it tracks and refreshes better than my Nuvi 200, which is a p.o.s. to begin with. The TD2 is using Asian ROM (coz that's where we are), dunno if that makes a difference.
BTW, thanks for the G-config. not only is it good for Garmin but pretty much any other app out there. Real handy. Cheers.

I've been using Garmin XT from v4.x in my old P1i (with BT GPS), now I'm using v5.20w in my Fuze and also use v5.20 in my wife's Nokia N85.
What i noticed to far is that rendering 2d&3d in the QVGA Symbian phones works OK, but the VGA WinMo version is (as I read in other posts) not only slow to render but also goes about 40 meters behind the actual position.
Whenever going faster than 80 km/h (in a highway of course) i see Garmin crossing streets 2 o 3 seconds AFTER I actually passed through them.
As a placebo try using it in 2D with minimal map details.
As for the hangups I can tell I do have them every ones in a while, not very often though.

Workaround for Garmin XT freezing
Hi I had freezing problems with this latest version of XT running on my O2 Stellar. It drove me nuts so I eventually emailed Garmin. They repied on 4th.Dec.09 saying it is a known bug with the speed camera database, see verbatim extract from Garmin email below ;
GARMIN replied : 'Unfortunately this is an issue that we are currently aware about and in the process of fixing. This problem is down to the Safety Camera proximity warnings around particular areas. For a temporary fix you will need to disable the Safety Cameras on your device you would go in to tools, settings, proximity points then disable the safety cameras.'
I have disabled speed cameras as it says and it has not frozen since.
Lets hope they update the software with a fix

Install the BsBTweaks cab file. Run BsBTweaks. Soft button "Menu" below right. Select "Rotation" from drop down menu. Click soft button "Option" and select "Add Application" from drop down menu. Click "OK" at prompt and it will take you to program list. Choose Garmin Mobile XT icon. After GarminMoXT runs, shake the phone a few times until a prompt saying that GarminMoXT has been added to BsBTweak. Soft-reset and you are done.
I'm Using the ATT Tilt 2 AKA Touch Pro 2. And I barely get any freezing issues. It works great on my phone, a bit slow, but its quick enough for the upcoming turns even in 3D mode. I hope that Garmin still does come out with a fix for the slow visual graphical probs.
