Hi everyone
There is a way to block all data connection for my device?
I have no data plan, I wish my device asks me each time it connects to the internet (via hsdpa)...
When you go to the communications manager where u turn on/off wifi bluetooth etc, there is also a switch for data plan. When i have that as off no internet works.
[EDIT] just noticed that the data transfer switches automaticaly on if i click on a webbrowser

Exactly my problem
under settings>connections>connections>manage existing connections
you'll find the data settings for your network. Delete them from here and stop ALL data connections.

Mhmh, this is a temporary solution I've thought of
If I can find/make a program that erases and then restores the network settings, it would be great
Let's see if there is something for this in the WM API...
If you don't want anything as permant as my last suggestion then maybe go in to connections again >advanced>select network and choose the two options to 'my ISP'. This options can easily be changed back.
Very interested to know about this also as my device comes within the next 7 days and I won't have a data plan sorted.
So following John k's suggestion i can stop emails coming through automatically also?

There is a simpler fix for this, just set the email send/receive delay to "manual", so it won't download any data.
In the same way, the automatic weather update can be disabled.

excellent ... thanks mate is there anything else which is using the data connection in the background if you know what I mean? Not web browsers for instance
You might want to look up "modaco nodata". Switch your connections on and off when you want.

but if i try to check email it says "cant connect with current settings" skyfire wont work and kinoma freeplay wont work
wifi works for everything
what could the problem be?!
i think i know why because i have a special employee plan that just got changed and somehow the settings may be altered?
still need a fix though
no one has an idea??
i have set media net default settings and even downloaded the restore and remove proxy cabs tried both and still no
someone anyone?
go to setting-connections, then under media net click on manage exisiting connections
now click on the proxy tab on the bottom, make sure the second box (this network uses a proxy server) is unchecked...
I had the same problem when I switched to Proven
Go to e-mail account options(Menu>Tools>Options)>Choose an account>Edit account setup>Go to that page where Advanced Server Settings tab(click on it)> Under network connection choose MEdia Net. That should fix your problem. Do the same for each of yours e-mail accounts.

The only option I have is 'internet' (so I can't change it to Media Net. When I check my connection media net is the only connection I have though. Any ideas how to get that changed in my ActiveSync/Email settings?
use this cab..it adds a new connection named ATT GPRS which has a different dns..i have been using this since i found it and have never gone back because by utilizing these dns servers you get much better speedtest results and it seems to never have any connection problems..thing is you gootta use a tool like advanced config and go into connection settings in the program and disable medianet from being used as a connection because if both are active your device randomly chooses which to connect with so you gotta make sure medianet is no longer active..here is the cab

i guess next time it hsppens make sure the feature is the correct one on your account. call your regional account executive to check it out.
it happens from time to time because when medianet is on for quite sometime, it can't authenticate the phone. Easy fix is just to just disconnect from medianet then try it again. You can do this by sliding to settings and clicking on "communications." After that, just turn off data connection and reconnect.
Pretty self explanatory this one - is there any way of knowing whether your mobile internet connection (3G) or WiFi is being used in, for example, a browser session? Just don't want to make the mistake of looking at YouTube on the phone, meaning to use the home WiFi, and end up using my 3G by accident, and paying through the nose for extra feed.

The icons on your task bar should indicate if you have a active data connection.
Or, you can use Spb Wireless Monitor (which you need to purchase). It produces reports telling you which software uses which connections and the amount of data transferred.
In a discussion I had with HTC Tech Support, they told me that wifi, when enabled, over-rides the cellular data. I'm not sure if this just applies to the settings or always. Hopefully, someone can provide a definitive answer.
Yes that is correct, if WIFI is enabled you WILL NOT have a cellular data connection.
Umm. There is a wifi icon in the taskbar o.o and a signal icon also.....whichever is there means it's active and if wifi is there, your data will not be active, only wifi.
What all you are saying is true but some applications still use the data network even if wifi is turned on and connected it seems. I have the same issue(i don't have a data plan with my fuze since my college has wifi everywhere). But things like weather and other native apps on the phone will just turn on the 3g network and stat using data instead of wifi.
if a device is transfering data over gprs/3g whatever
it show arrows moving in the signal str icon
otherwise it use wifi
Applications can choose to use a certain connection if they are programmed to do so, windows only gives each one a type of 'ranking', the fastest connection having the highest ranking and being the one an application is to use by default, but the application can override this and choose whatever connection it likes. This ranking is called the "Interface Metric" if you'd like to learn more about it.
There's an HTC program called 'bytecounter' that monitors the SMDx: ports in the system, which are the ports the system uses for data.. in bytecounter you will see the values increase if an application is using data over cellular network. let me know if you'd like me to upload it.

Well that wasn't particularly helpful. I too have made the same assumption, but the question asked if there was any way to make sure.

Well that was the kind of answer I was looking for, and is particularly pertinent in my case, as my connection through my mobile provider is about as fast (or maybe even faster) than my fixed line connection at home. A rather bizarre situation, but such is the advancement of Australian broadband infrastructure.
The last couple of times I have used it, I have taken to turning off the phone connection so that only WiFi is running, and then using the internet. It would be good if you can upload the byetcounter program, seems like a free (?) version of the software programatix mentioned.
Here ya go!
Maybe this is just me, but when I try to unzip that file, nothing comes up....?
lol, i always forget to remove the hidden attribute.. let me go ahead and fix that..
Edit: fixed
Newer Windows Live (including the one that come with Touch Pro) will always dial-up the 3G/GPRS connection when checking for email in Messaging. But if you are checking in Windows Live, most of the time it doesn't dial-up but sometimes, it does.
So far that is the only program that I know of behaves like this. I contacted Microsoft regarding this and they keep asking me to contact my celular provider for help. In other word, they are not helping (or do not understand the problem).
Anyway I solved the problem by changing the Connections setting to "My Work Network" for Internet. The catch is, if I really want to use 3G/GPRS, I'll have to change the setting to my celular 3G/GPRS connection.
Or you could use the nodata application from modaco and disable whenever you like the cellular 3g connection just to be sure you are using wifi. When you are away from wifi networks you can in a matter of 2 clicks reenable the cellular 3g connection...
This phone is bugging me. ill be home, where I have low/no service, ill try to connect to wifi, but the phone will try to connect to gprs/3g. then sometimes ill have service and it wont connect at all. IE will work but not opera or some other programs. WIFI is searching 24/7 telling when theres a connection. anyone else have this problem?
I want to leave wifi on but only connect to networks registered.
I want if there's no 3g connect to wifi if available.
seems simple to me. possible? maybe i need to change some settings?
There is "no data" but that don't really solve the problem.
I have expereinced the same, especialy if I have low signal then the gprs/3g connections starts up.
It would be neat with an application that gave you a pop up where you had to confirm that you want to connect thru anything other than wifi or bluetooth.
I have the nodata program on my phone and it works great. Search the forum for the program and if you cant find it tell me and I'll attach the .cab

NoData is probably not what you're looking for. It will allow you to disable traffic through a selected data connection. But it must be enabled / disabled manually. Sounds like you're looking for something that will toggle automatically, giving priority / preference to your WiFi connection when it's available.
There's a program called CommMgrPro that will do what you're looking for. That is, enable and disable connections based on things like cell tower location, detection of WiFi, etc. There's also a forum page for the program here.
A program called Bandswitch (at the same site as CommMgr Pro) will do similar to NoData, except it will let you choose enable / disable based on Time of day presets.
Also here in the forum you can find a program called WifiLocations. It will do similar to the first program above above. If you search the forum there are a few more (some free) programs that will do what you're looking for. Good luck!
My problem with the nodata program is that I can't seem to disable gprs/3g traffic while using wifi. It might be that I have an old version, but I have found many times that even with nodata running in the background with disabled data traffic, it still connects me if I loose my wifi connection.

thank you very much for the info. I think I sorta fixed it pretty well on my own.Still need the toggle off and on though.
I hard resetted it with out the bloat. then configured my interenet like this:
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&message.id=110811
then i went to sounds/notifications in settings, i think, and disabled the wifi notification.
seems to work pretty well.
i take back what i said.it goes in and out. I had 3g service and it said I was connected to media net, but it wouldnt let me get to the net. this phone is a pain when it comes to internet and gps
what do you guys have for internet settings under start>settings>connections>connections>advanced>select network
what setup do i use in the first in the first box and the which setup in the second.
mine 1st media net
2nd my work network (whatever that is)

Edit your MEdiaNet connection settings so your proxy is DISABLED. If it is enabled your WiFi will try to use it too - which is not possible. Unchecking the proxy will have have no discernible impact to your browsing speed when you are using the AT&T data connection.

You can safely set both to MEdiaNet. If you have WiFi enabled and you're connected to your access point it will take precedent over your GPRS (Edge) or UMTS (3G) connection. It is not necessary to disable the AT&T data connection if you are connected and browsing over your WiFi connection. As soon as you turn off or lose your WiFi signal, your phone will go back to using the AT&T data connection.

up up up and away...
Hello Guys,
Recently I had Gone out of my Free 6 months Free 100MB of Data per Month,
Means It was like If You use an Android Phone on Airtel Network(India), You Get Free Data Worth 100 MB per Month Till First 6 Months.
So Since 6 Months Were Done, It Started Charging me 30p/50kb & It was too costly for one with an Android Phone.
Even If I Turned On the Phone & then Switch to Wi-Fi, mean while if 2-5 kb even if was cut, It used to charge me 30p.
************************************************************
So As to Avoid this, In HERO ROM's We had an Option to Disable Data that too through An Widget; But In Cyanogen / Official ROM's We Cant Even Disable Data...
So To Avoid This, I used To make another new APN with Parameters Disabled for Both Name & APN
So All I Want to Say is that Adding an Data Disabled APN Profile to the Current APN List Through which Everyone can Disable Data on Non-Customized ROM's By just Changing the APN to Disabled
there is already at least one application which does this, i use APNdroid which can either be used from the launcher or as a widget
http://code.google.com/p/apndroid/
Just delete all the APNs. I've been doing this since I first bought my G1. I'm on a college campus with WiFi everywhere so I didn't bother paying for data.
WG-Build 8.2
Added it to my ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592466
APNdroid ftw!

Why Would you install a Separate App Every time you Flash / Update / Wipe Data, Or As d00m Said Why to Delete The APN & Type it Again Whenever Needed ??
Instead just go to APN Settings & Change the APN to Disabled
Don't You think This will be better ??
Make a new APN, call it "No Internet" fill it with rubbish then pick it as your APN.
As long as it's selected you can't use data.
Personally I have it set to No Internet, and the MMS entry is separate so I can still send/recieve mms when necessary but I don't use per MB data.
Why noyt just pay for Unlimited internet? whats the point of having G1?????

Not all countries have carriers that provide unlimited internet, and even if they do it could be very, very expensive. Until recently we had to pay approx. 80USD for unlimited internet.
APNdroid is not perfect. It disables all APNs, even MMS APNs. This is not ideal as we cant receive MMS. So, the Hero way of doing it is ideal.

check out the 2.0 dev version of it, it has options for all apn off, only MMS on, or all on
Here's my question. Does putting junk in the apn cause it to try and connect over and over and kill you battery like not having signal? What about with no internet selection? If it does, I could see a need for a better way.

By the way There is no Need to Discuss So much on this small stuff....
I had just Posted this thread for ROM Dev's So they can include it in their ROM's if they feel its Usefull...
Disable data on boot
Can't you go in to phone diagnostics and disable data on boot
(only works on HTC branded phones)
Instructions for people who don't know:
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
tap phone information
press menu
tap more
and select both disable data connection and disable data on boot...
then you should have a no data connection without installing unneeded apps
Jeeeeshhh
Just Download "Quick Settings" from the market...
Turn off Network Data
Simply
I use Bar Control to place a shortcut of the app in the notification bar for quick access.
Problem solved!
EDIT: OK i didnt read all posts before replying...Droid Wall sounds much simpler. But i like having my settings available without having to hit the HOME button to select said app.
Hi everyone,
friend just showed me his sgsII and that he has video calls with no default application...straight from the dialer he can choose whether to call regularly or by video call...do you guys have this option also?cause I don't have it
another amazing thing was - he was able to do so even with wifi and data closed!!!
very weird...
Wow. I can't imagine how that works. Unfortunately, I'm on a custom ROM and can't confirm...sounds cool, but knowing how video calling works, I have my doubts. Something sounds fishy...
If I understand correctly it was done from the dialer.
If so, it did use data traffic.

Hi Alon
I'll believe it when i see the bill...
Maybe he has some bug in the ROM.
One way to know for sure is to completely remove his Access Point (Data Connection)
(Settings --> Wireless and Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names --> Choose APN [write all details down and find out password] --> Press hardware settings button --> Delete APN)
