Whats the main different between smartphone and ppc phone?
Which version does people usually prefer?
I am planning to get an iMate Jam for my gf, but thinking that its a little big on the size and heavey for a girl to use...
So is smartphone the better choice for a she?
But I never use a smartphone before, I m not sure if its lacking the raw power or anything compare to an ppc phone
Can someone give me some "quick" pointer
I need to get one for the up coming Xmas... which is not too far ahead
Imate jam, your girlfriend will love it. My wife loves her imate jam it is small, you can do so much with it.
It is small, powerful, touch screen, has a big screen. Can do so much more then a smrt phone.
Can play mp3s, use normal sd's.
Honestly, smartphones are ok, but they are in my opinion a stripped out ppc, I find them so awkward to use. How can you do much in such a small screen, you can use the real estate, but why?
Or let her see both?
Hi there everyone!
I went to TOKYO not so long ago (end of July). And GUESS what I saw???
These marketers introduced me to a new Pocket PC.
They call it the FUTARON V27
It's basicly a 812MHz Pocket PC, with a 3 Megapixel CCD video/photo cam. Its got a powerful graphics controller, similar to the one's in the PSP (Playstation Portable) and a strong 3G+GPRS built-in antenna. When they demonstated it to me, they wouldn't let me touch it
They put WM5 on one, and on another they put their own program which lacks similarities to the MW5 but it is, how do you say, more simplied and windows xp looking.
They run, the liberty city stories using a PSP emulator, which also runs other games like Mario and Pokemon. When I asked them about JAVA, they laughed , but yeah it does have it's own JAVA system.
He loaded the game from the pocket pc, itself so it was large file size. He told me it had a total of 5 Gb storage!!!
It's even got its own TV out, like the samsung d600 phone. They plugged it on a projector and showed me Pocket Powerpoint and also played the game via the projection. 8)
I should mention, though it was a bit bigger than my XDAII, the size was basicly the result of the fingerprint reader and all the other commercially available space consuming specialties. Basicly had more specifics than you can point with sticks!! But it was without a doubt, thinner, less rigid and smaller than the PSP.
There was special accessories made for it, like 3 different types of car holders for different holding ways. Optional: loudspeaker, charger, GPS holders. A weird case, but it is very protective, which you can tell by teh fact how the guy dropped and slammed it unto the ground a couple times which nothing happend. An expensive looking stylish cover. A durable plastic cover which you can go diving (i think) since its waterproof and you can press the buttons from the cover's buttons (what about taping the screen??) I guess that was designed for diving photography. A mini device wich you plug into the serial and the tv out and it shows a small (about 20" inch) projective for portable in-class presentations.A work station where its hooked up to speakers, where it can be charged and charge a battery, otherwise the spare battery (u connect) to the station is used, also has the projector, a note holder and couple of buttons which u can configure, i saw him use it like an office telephone with the hold button and all. And many other things which u connect like a powerful LED torch, forgot to mention the camera has it own LED torch and ca be used separately.
The whole pocket poket pc was very artistically designed, very comfortable, light and stylish. You could hold it in a digital camera type way, the PSP game kind of way, the stylus tapping sort of way and ofcourse the mobile type where you hold it on your ear.
When I asked them for a trade for my XDA II, the man nearly died of laughter. No racial offence, but I think these Japanese cannot hold their laughter. I asked for the price, he said it wasn't for sale. That they were merely introducing their devices to the tourists and hoping to get feedback and possibly order. Since I dont trust anyone with my money  I didnt order anything, they basicly get your ID and credit card and contact you when they will release it.
This phone was not a phone, a pocket pc, a digital camera, a gameboy but it was something else. These nerds gathered their brains :?: and the wanted things/ideas  from the public and made it real.
He said there is a slim chance these devices may come out until the end of 2007-mid 2008. I guess their holding off their stuff to profit more from previous products.?..
I've not pictures of this, it was a, as the sign read, "NO CAM TAKING" with guards about. :x
Anyways, I guess these people just rolled our dreams into one good fantasy which we can't have or touch and probably photograph until 3 or so more years.
I am thinking about buying a machine that packages (with an opening mini-parachute) a stored content when it fires. And it does fire, yes it does, so i can be like to the guy:
Why dont you try my SD card? Yoink grab the device
chuck it in the launcher. shoot the device into the air.
The parachute opens, it lands safely out of the secure zone.
My friend grabs it and disappears from TOKYO. And while the guards watch the device open its parachute, I run another direction and also escape. Next week, I'm home using my new whatever device. Lets face the facts, the name of the device is very bad. :?
That's it for my explaining.
812 MHz? How much battery life would that device have?
plenty of battery life, it has a nuclear reactor in the back instead of those outdated Lithion Ion batteries were stuck with....
Thats quite impressive but not surprising for Japan the micro technology capital of the world, I think theres some big innovations in pocket technology on the way from pocket pc phones to UMPCs.
By 2007-2008 only imagination knows what could be coming out by then.
No its not a PPC. Its is a UMPC And they have already been release in America.
I've sold one at my warehouse for $880.
The other system running is Windows XP Media Center Portable Edition.
Samsung and Asus have released them in America
Are you sure you didnt see this thing?
30gig, 1.2gig intel,4.5inch screen, XP, wifi, Plus many more. There are some models that come EDGE/GPRS.
Its only a little bigger then the XDA Exec.
and Im loving it!
Uh, "a little bigger" is the whole issue. Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets but lets face it: a device this size really takes the "pocket" out of "Pocket PC".
Sure, it's a great replacement for a laptop, but not for PPC (specially phone edition devices).
I'm getting ready to buy my first PPC phone and wanted some advice from people who have used these devices.
I've owned a cell phone for about 3 years now (a basic one). I'm a heavy computer user (mainly PCs with Windows or on rare occasions Linux). I love to tinker and build my own PCs.
What interests me the most about a PPC phone is making my life easier. I buy the computers for our school (I teach 5th grade). I'd like to get a phone that can keep my Google Calendar and Gmail on it plus browse the web from time to time. I'd also like to be able to do other stuff on it, like watch video clips, listen to MP3s, and take the occasional picture. Games might be fun too when I'm waiting around. I don't have much use for GPS at this point (though I admit it would be fun to play with sometimes). I like the idea of getting after-market applications and games to make the PPC phone more productive/enjoyable. Being able to have control over how it handles phone calls is another plus. Size isn't too important to me. I'm more interested in functionality and smart design. I like the idea of a big screen and a QWERTY keyboard.
I've thought about Palm OS. It seems very smartly designed, but I don't like that it can't multitask. I will use my device for a variety of tasks at the same time (like I'm doing with my PC at the moment. I don't know much about the other OSes beyond the Windows flavors.
Right now I'm leaning toward getting a Treo 750 when Cingular comes out with it or a Cingular 8525 (HTC Hermes). From what I've read it appears that the Treo is one of the best designs (easier to use and more functional). The 8525 has better hardware specs and a bigger screen. So, I'm not sure which way to go.
I'd love to hear some of people's opinions and advice. At this point I'm not even sure what things I need to focus on.
Thank you in advance for your input.
I'm getting the Hermes next month when my contract upgrade is due.
Well I Like "enough to recommend to you" The QTEK 9100, since i got mine and thanks to this forum, i can tinker till the cows come home., I've flashed it, unlocked it, downloaded and experimented with its ROM and external ram, upgraded the phone skin, completely made it into a totally different beast from when it was shipped from vodafone...
I can connect without cost using wifi (54G) to: internet, msn, skype, pocket news reader (spb insight), and internet radio.
I can sychronise with active sync, my documents, calender, contacts and others, I can setup many email accounts for downloading to the device
watching films, jurrassic park is 113megs at QVGA resolution, and can be viewed full screen too, the keyboard ejects out the side of the device and lights up in dark. comes with office suite, and windows mobile 5 devices today are very good, you can use gprs too the whole package is the best device i've previously owned the following devices.
nokia N91, HDD corrupted after 4 days, crashed more times than Barry Sheen!
Nokia 6630 good phone but boring...it was symbian os
HP Jornado 928 (ppc 2003) crashed a lot, eats battries like hell
Nokia 6600 good phone bit basic really
Nokia 9310i good phone, good screen, poorly made
Nokia 9110i well made, black and white screen, liked it then
and the Qtek 9100 has satisfied all my demands and given me great freedom
TOM TOM 6.010 runs flawlessy for 7 hours continuosly without a charge and there was still 10% battery left, what other device will do that for you eh!!!!
The device is not perfect but out of all the other stuff out there, it's the best i have owned yet.
whoster69, I have similar needs to you and I have gone for the Palm treo 750v. After using it for 3 days I can say I have not needed to use stylus even once this is how good one handed usage of this phone is. This is the only WM device that has been designed for being a phone. Wizard and Hermes seem as if phone functionality was added as an after thought.
Battery doesn't seem to be as bad as some people said it is (still haven't needed to recharge yet), coming from Wizard and Magician screen took some getting used to but now its ok.
One of the reasons I didn't get Hermes was of the sliding keyboard. I used to loathe Wizard keyboard as everytime I needed to type something I would have to slide the keyboard and wait for the OS to adjust itself. I am very happy with Palm keypad. Although the keys are smaller but the shape and tacitle feedback means they are very practical.
Lets the flames begin. I've been an AVID Windows Mobile user for my PDA/Phone needs for the past 3-4 years. I've had a Treo, an HTC Wizard and TyTN and also played and supported applications in my workplace on Windows Mobile based handheld devices. I recently bought an iPhone and it's now my mobile device of choice, hands down. Obviously, it has a few shortcomings but so far nothing that can't be fixed with a firmware update. The lack of 3G is a non-issue to me, when I got 3G on my 8525 it killed the battery and sometimes I couldnt tell that much difference from using EDGE. Overall, I think MS better wake up, the user interface and ease of use on the iPhone make ALL my WM devices seem clunky and slow. switching to WiFi on my 8125 and 8525 was a royal pain in the tail but my iPhone switches seamlessly and fast. I'm no kool-aid drinking apple fan boy but I think MS better be paying attention.
Hooked........MMM lets see.....battery does not come out....cannot buy an extra battery.....if your battery dies, it cost $80 to send it in and get it fixed...Apple I guess is smart.....Better not forget your Iphone in a hot car....
biggest issue imho is lack of 3th party applications

has anyone tested one? I'm curious if I should get it.
Gonna be my next phone.....Its already in the Wiki

Large but in charge!
It is amazing but you are not going to sit this into your pocket. You can get them for a great price on Amazon.com.
I got one. It's ok, just not ment to be a phone really, just happens to use a sim card to always have a connection.
Depends what you want
Against:
Its not a phone unless you got a decent bt handsfree setup (though great for a conference phone).
Someone needs to design a better case/slip pouch for belt use.
Its not quite a substitute for my faithfull TC1100 (Pocket Office lets it down, its capable of more)
Superior screen size/resolution make Today and standard apps look "clumpy" and childish
For:
Great for eBook readers, sits in the hand comfortably
Great as a portable Wifi radio (just wish Realnetworks would improve the product or BBC dump RealPlayer)
Great for Video and mp3s with the 8 gb storage
Nice portable games machine for RPG, strategy etc.
Nice in-car GPS navigator (AutoMapa, TomTom)
Battery life is quite respectable (>10 hours reading)
Nice inflight pose factor
If you are a traveller then its the best I've seen so far
