I recently found this phone that looks exactly like the tytn ii, called the Awang A9000 .... how different are the 2 phones and does anyone know if it can be used in the uS....

You mean this one?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90hLKV16w-8&feature=related
Yes, apparently it is a Chinese clone of the TyTN II, although it looks much cheaper. Check this link out:
http://www.multicellphone.com/awang-a9000-htc-tytn-ii-clone-runs-windows-mobile/
This device does not run Windows Mobile. It runs a proprietary operating system, i.e. no way to install/uninstall anything...
it failed to mention it's performance in couple key areas such as cpu speed and ram size... Also it runs on prob a java based OS with just surface/icon clone and it's in no way comparable to windows mobile's customization ability, for $185 it costs too much, I think a fair price for it should be around $90-110...
shouldn't this be in the Kaiser General forum? As I don't see how this relates to ROM development...
yes this is not a ppc its just look like kaiser but its basic smart phone

Hi all,
I have been using o2 XDA and XDA II mini for many years , i tried almost all new phones with WM5/6 and i am very much sure that it does not serve my purpose and work.
Can I buy a new 02 / HTC touch dual or tytn and load windows 2003 on it.
I understand that i will loose warranty etc. but is it possible. pros & cons?
Can i do it ? how ?
thanks
roms are tailored 100% for a device
so if the device maker never made a 2003rom for a device
one would have to start from scratch and maybe
have to reverse engineer drivers if some were requied
and not available in a wm2003 model

if someone really wants to spend money and energy he can,but it would be better to have wm5 or 6 for some devices like magician instead an overcomed 2003 for newer ones like touch dual, pharos, cruise, diamond
and by the way people developing os are trying to make a better os every time, and in most cases they do it, so you get better memory handling, better drivers...faster device if you want it that way
WOW! Why would you want to put a server OS on your phone? lol

do you have a specific for example compatibility problem with WM5+?
I have over 10,000 client contacts on my phone , I transferred data to couple of new phones with wm5 and wm6. All is well till I try to search. When i search for a contact it takes around 5 mins on new phones with wm5 and wm6 . It takes 3-4 secs on the the XDAII and XDA mini for the same. having tried many phones and tools , i assumed that the problem should be with OS. with improved graphics and whole lot of other features which take up the active resources may be the search module does not get all that is required.
MY xda mini 2003 / xda II 2002 have less features ,less graphics so they are faster is what i have concluded from all these experiments that i have done wit new phones.
Thanks

If you compare the search tool with my kind of data, you will understand taht the new OS is not of any help to me. I agree , that there may be whole lot of new features and drivers , But search in a n integral part of the os and don't understand why that should change. and it works superb in earlier versions 3 secs V/s 5 mins to search.
Your problem is caused by a new way of working with memory in WM5+ systems. WM2003 used part of RAM as a storage medium for installed programs and also contact databases were located there. WM5+ uses internal flash instead. Data from flash doesn't disapear when you run out of battery juice. On the other hand it is a numerous times slower. However i cannot imagine the slowdown would have been so drastic. I would advise you trying the fastest possible device with lots of RAM (Samusng Omnia i900 or HTC Touch Diamond). It is possible the slowdown will be more acceptable. If it will be no success you can modify some ROM to use RamDisk as a storage medium. However, there are no new devices with WM2003 ROMs available.
That is the most convincing answer that i have got since last year when i started looking for replacement for my XDA.
After trying almost every new and latest PDAs in the market, I am sure that the new PDAs will not be any great help
BUT your statement - " Modify some ROM to use RamDisk as a storage medium." makes me hopeful.
Unfortunately, for novice like me it ends there. I don't know how modify ROMS, or any place where i can get it done. Even if i get one, i don't know how to load it. Tutorials did not help much, they were just too much technical. I may be a odd one in this developer forum, but this is only place where i think i can get the answer. I am just looking for PDA that is just equvialent to my XDA II and XDA mini
Many Thanks for your response
hi there,
i was looking for a new phone and got the at&t Samsung Jack. I understand that it is considered a smartphone and i though that as such, needs specific smartphone software. After searching the web for some applications it occurred to me that smartphone and windows mobile are somewhat the same thing. I am not sure though what the difference is. I know that i can install some software that i used for my kaiser but not all software. what do i have to look for and where is the best place to get my hands on some nice cabs?
thanks,
G
thanks for all the answers...

pocket pc = WM PROFESSIONAL, touchscreen

i understand. what i don't get is, what do i have to look for when it comes to software?! i have a bunch of cab's that worked on my kaiser but don't work on the jack. is that because one is the standard edition and the other one the professional edition? when i look for software, what do i need to look for? wm standard or smartphone apps?
thanks,
G
You have to look out for windows smartphone apps. Actually smartphone is a misnomer as the touch version of win mobile is also called a smartphone. However for software searching PPC means touch version and SMARTPHONE means nontouch version. Actually this happened with me also as I had no idea about the difference of software compatibility in SM and PPC. Now I have known that PPC platform is much wider, versatile with respect tl software availability. I hope this serves your purpose. If you love apps I think you may regret changing over to smartphone from PPC. Some PPC apps do get installed on smartphones but only a very few of them can be used satisfactorily mainly due to navigational problems. However most of the PPC apps donot get installed on smartphones.

thanks for the great info, it makes more sense to me now. i didn't really want to switch from ppc to sm. i was just sick of my kaiser. the touchscreen drove me nuts. i cant stand the way it works. i wish it would be as smooth as the apple. (don't get me wrong, i hate apple).
i looked at a few phones and decided to go without touchscreen. i bought the nokia e71 but wasn't a big fan of the menu and the symbian os. i think it looks more refreshing than the windows os but its too much work to even send out a text message...i probably didn't get to know it good enough though...
however, i don't need too many apps on my smartphone. just emails, calendar and tomtom if possible. i have a hard time finding a cab though for a tomtom version that works...
thanks,
G
p.s. what is a good site to download smartphone apps?
http://www.smartphone-freeware.com/
as well as not having touchscreens, smartphones generally dont need to be as high specced to get hte same speeds. this means they are cheaeper and in my experience tougher to break xD
Hi..
is there any phone put that runs native Windows Mobile AND Android (and maybe another linux), depends on the flashed image ?
thx
In fact there are some HTC WM models that can use andorid or linux
Have a look on the Universal, Kaiser sections.
I´m sure there are more than just my 2 examples, just do a search
both phones are old and there is nearly no way to buy new ones of them
but thx orb

Well
You have not asked for new devices
Also if you have patience you can find people who has that devices in new condition
Have a look on marketplace
Not always the newest is the best
How is android on Kaiser these days? the Raph100 build is good, but could be so much better
Hello all,
Someone knows if there is a wm rom for the Samsung S8000 (Jet)
I like to hear about it, and i know that this forum is mostley related to HTC phones..
Sorry for my bad english.
Thanks
Greetings
Alex
Welcome to forums
As here we dedicate only to HTC devices you won´t get too much atention, however in off topic there is a thread regarding samsung (another model)
or better try here:

Samsung JET have a Samsung OS - so there is no way to cook a Windows Mobile ROM for it.
you mean it's impossible to replace Samsung OS with WM? I am sure it's possible. Has anyone looked into it? What are the obstacles preventing that happening. Is it fundamental?

I agree. I don't see a reason.
Saying that this is not a WM device is not valid. You can load other OS in your phone if it supports the hardware and the loader interface. If the hardware is so similar, it's a matter of analysis...
If I had one, at least I'd try to flash a OmniaII rom (phone+boot+pda).
I'll contribute $$ to the cooker that could provide such ROM for the Jet s8000.
Cheers
One more contributor here! 50USD for someone that cooks a Jet WM ROM.
I bought one to my wife. The phone is great and I would definitely have one if a Windows Mobile ROM is avaliable...
btw... it has the exact same processor and general specs as the Omnia II
About processors i'm not sure... But OMNIA II have 256Mb RAM vs 128Mb in JET. Maybe there also different radio modules (GSM/UMTS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) and different video controllers.
P.S. Sorry for my bad english

i'll contribute another 50 USD if there is a winmo rom for this phone
i think there would be alot in interest here, particularly since many xda users would happily flash a WinMo rom if it were available!
I have recommended this model to my brother and he loves it, his previous phone was the N95. Now to get the Jet to WinMo!:
hi guys,
I'd like to know if it possible because I've been using my Xperia x1 for about a year and i think it's time for a change but when I checked all the available phones I got confused a little.
it seems like Windows phone 7 looks great but in a review i saw somewhere it says that it lacks some important features such as:
No Bluetooth file transfers
No USB mass storage mode
No multitasking
No copy/paste
No Flash or Silverlight support in the web browser
No DivX/XviD video support
No internet tethering support
Swapping memory card requires hard reset; cards not readable by computer
and Android has great features but IMO I think WinMo gives more freedom in the terms of using or hacking
and as a WinMo 6.5 user I find it a great OS with all the features needed and if there some feature I want that is not already offered it's available here on XDA-Dev either as a .cab or cooked in a ROM
So the Main Question: if I buy a Sonyericsson (X10 maybe) or a HTC with a 1 GHz Processor will I be able to install any OS of them as a ROM???
Thanx in advance.
The only device capable of running WP7 is the hTC Leo and it has actually working Android and some working on Ubuntu and Maemo as well.
not any other device will be capable to do so
Thanx for reply
So the HD2/Leo is able to handle all 3 OSs
but i have more questions please
how is the HD2 up to date regarding the specs? like the RAM, ROM, and processor
can there be 2 OSs in the same time and to be able to switch between them?
and does android 2.2 froyo work 100% i mean with everything working??
thanx again

I'm intreagued, what about the duplo phone looks great to you?
The basic HD2 specs are up to date on paper (RAM, ROM, processor) and even beat some newer phones but dig deep and you'll see the latest version of the chips are better. Android 2.2 is running perfectly but WP7 is still work in progress.
It's more than a year old but still the best phone EVER.

I would be great if it is possible.
I wanna try WP7 too.
