So, there are reports and samples pics of Diamond and TyTN II owners getting MUCH imporved photo quality by simply removing the outer camera cover. The issue with the TC is the camera cover is not part of the battery cover like it is with those devices. I used to think it was an advantage to keep dust out, but seeing how we TC owners can't do this as easily, I'm rethinking that...
Anyone out there tried to remove the TC outer camera cover? If so, how? And to what results?
Any on this?
Could jomo25 post some links to those reports?
Also, after taking a look at this thread, it looks like temporarily removing the top plastic cover isn't that hard. Just do this, and try taking the photos without it.

The first picture is good. I'm able to take pictures like that, but ONLY if stay half a minute totally shiftless! And I'm still a human person not a rock!
I found that playing around with the brightness and contrast settings makes a huge difference. The auto settings don't seem to be good for much. It appears the 2 sample pictures have different settings, I've snapped quite a few pics with my Polaris, and can't see the difference shown here being due to removing that plastic (glass?) cover...

these are the exif info side by side
you are right, i should have used manual settings, but for me the difference was overwelming and didn't think to make more tests.
After this test, i'm thinking of buying a high quality watch glass cover, have it cut to the right size and replace the original cover lens.
If i'll get to that, i'll come back with some more pics.

Are those two pictures a comparison between the plastic protection on and off?
yeap, i think the images are self-explanatory.
just try too use self timer and set it on 2 sec then uf got time to hold your phone right and you have nice pictures
i use it for myself this way
P.s sorry for my bad english

Hi,
I have just popped out the camera lens cover on the back side of the phone. And truly i am amazed with how beautiful it takes pictures now.
untill it gets dust on it
the weird blue hue actualy comes from the distortion throught the plastic cover. thats why when you try to edit the photos in photoshop black becomes blue .
just my two cents.
carefull not to scratch the lens.
S.V.I
YUP!
Very true, you spent your two cents wisely, lol
Amazing isnt it?
jeje like the BLOWING THREAD!!!!! hahahaha
see it and laugh a lot!!!
thanks for the effort to all right there but my audio port is trydly broke i just need to put a little points of soldering mmm i didi it... easy to disassemblyfix and assembly... like a woman!
camera lens is quite deep under the body, i think it will hardly hurt itself.
Now it is like 2 megapixel camera of nokia, really !!!
i tried following this guy's instructions to improve my wizard's crappy camera shots..
and.. to my surprise, the lens cover was already gone..
weird.. so, it turns out that my cam was a lot crappier than it is now..
thanks.. now i'm assured..
I don't get it ytsejam_ . U didn't notice until now that your lens cover was missing? Or u removed it and it works better now
Is there anyway to insert some "clear" plastic or cover into it? I wouldn't like to have a hole at the back, but would definitely like to improve camera quality. Maybe some others phone cover will fit, so to just purchase cover for some other phone? Can this plastic be polished maybe?
All this just to avoid having a hole, as S.V.I said, dust will be a problem
I think you can stick a clear plastic underneath the body, that will avoid the dust.
i only realized my lens cover is missing when I checked it out.. it means that the plastic cover got lost without my knowledge..
I actually dropped my wizard and the cover popped off. Been taking pics like crazy after since the cover was scratched anyway. Wouldnt suggest it though
Another Save method would be to place another Thin Clear lens over the original lens, But closer to the actual lens (right on top) instead of the Plastic in the casing.
I'm not a Photo Guy but someone probably knows what type of material would be best to use to protect the lens this way.
how do we integrate this hack into a rom? that would solve the dust problem!
Nice to see yo again!!!!
We missed the spanish ROMS Mr Faria...

personaly 8 kinda wish I had the money to have a diamond lens cover cut for my wizard. then it would never get scratched.. and the clarity of the diamond would be the clarity of the pictures!.
(actualy, I am working for a jeweler, and just found out that you can have a crystal cut for about $20!)
Nice to see Faria back on the board.
I have been using his easy cooker for a while now.
anyway, back to the camera quality issue:
has anyone got a full registry of everything that the wizard camera is supposed to do?
reason I ask is that while I was taking the exe appart to change the reasourses, I noticed a lot of icons (bmp) that I never seen used. this must mean that the camera is capable of much more.
I am also considering trying out the latest camera and messing around with the package to get it to work. I think it is possible to reverse engineer the thing.
anyone know of software that can trully edit dlls and exe's? other than just the reasourse hacker?
do anyone know how to pop out the camera lens cover to clean it? after that i will be able to put on again? thank u
nice idea...
Ok you lensesless guys. Put your proof where your mouth is... I´m about to get this plactic lense out, so if any of you would care to show us the "real deal", placing a few max resolution pictures taken without the camera plastic lens... Please
I'm beyond confused as to why 90% of my photos i'm taking with my S3 are blurry.
I want to love this phone but the camera is the most important feature to me and right now it just isn't cutting it.
I took 10-12 shots of a dog and cat i'm house sitting for outside AND inside and EVERYONE one of them has awful blurry images or pixelation. I'm as steady as can be and so were the animals but the shots shouldn't look THIS bad or this blurry. Are there settings I can do? i already tried turning on the stabilization...but that doesn't seem to help at all. Any settings or suggestions would be great because I don't want to return this and get an iPhone 5. Thanks!
[EDIT]Samples... never mind I can't post pictures or links so guess I can't show you what I mean.
Happened to me. Clean the lens and it fixed it.

I have noticed the lens being full of gunk. I need to get a case stat so the camera is slightly recessed. I made sure it was pristine before taking these pictures though...no dice.

My pictures come out remarkably "tight" (compared to my old Droid Incredible, especially), but just recently I hit a batch of foggy and blurry pics. I was handling the phone after putting candles on an ice cream cake for a party and accidentally touched the lens when hurrying to capture the moment. Usually, the slim, hardshell case I use effectively keeps junk off the lens - so, I cleaned it with a soft cloth and pictures were back to usually clarity.

After cleaning, have you used a magnifying glass (or similar) to see if anything looks amiss behind the lens glass? I haven't heard of such a defect yet, but I suppose it's possible across the millions of phones made - hope it's something easier to fix in your case, of course.
Or, have you possibly dropped the phone? In this case, I wonder if there's even a hairline fracture on the lens (this is fixable, from a thread I saw where an owner replaced their own lens glass).

Try a different camera app. Also try a different gallery I have noticed the stock gallery will sometimes not focus in on the pictures. I like the pro capture camera app.

What did you clean it with exactly? I have that issue where the pictures will be blurry and if I try and clean the lens with my shirt or a simple rag it won't always clean off. Luckily I have a few microfiber cleaning cloths lying around which do wonders for cleaning anything, and work great for cleaning the camera lens too. I got a pack of 8 for like, $5 at walmart and cut them up into 8ths.
Maybe you have shaky hands like me
I had the same problem so I changed the resolution from 8M to W6M and my pictures have been coming out better.

So, nothing shows up on the lens still or even behind the lens glass?
Have the pictures always been like this?
Are the clarity of pictures the front-facing camera similar?

Need to see some pics. Either post 2 more times or upload to dropbox.
Capturing a picture of a cat and dog can be tough, especially if they have the slightest movement. The question is does pictures of still things come out blurry as well?
Also, did you try setting the focus on face detection for pics of the cat and dog?

The front facing one takes fairly crappy pictures too but i chalk that up to the camera on the front being of lesser quality
As soon as I hit my 10 posts i'll post samples but one minute it can take beautiful shots the next it's blurry and awful.
I just cleaned it with some monitor wipes but haven't had a chance to test it at work.
alright, 10th post picture samples incoming!
OK here is an example of a great photo i took outside.

It's almost like the camera isn't getting enough light.
Part of the problem is, you're missing the AF point.
That happens a lot with camera phones, the camera focuses on the background instead of what you intended it to AF on.

I have tried AF and Macro mode.
On my note 2 I returned s cover because of how annoying it was to take pictures since you had to hold the cover half open to do so. I'm wondering since the case has the opening now if the camera lens peaks through it or not?
Sure can, shows that off here:

Was wondering this myself. Check out around 2:10 of this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IxYAefSP0o
Tested it- works.. but not the best option
I have finally got both the phone and cover today. So once i found this topic straight away tried to take a picture.
Here is my opinion: Yes, it can be done! .. but the downsides are:
1. smudges on s-cover glass
2. dust on s-cover glass
3. if photos are taken against sunlight s-covers glass shines and reduces the quality of the photo
All together i wouldn`t recommend to use camera with s-cover flipped to the back
Thanks for the info.
According to the video there is no magnet on the cover.
I thought there is a magnet.
Can anyone confirm?
If it's true then wake up on opening should work on any cover like my Note 2.
Would love if it's officially from samsung not a third party app.
Should I remove the protecting thing on the camera of the nexus 5 or will the camera get scrached?
The glass underneath the plastic is recessed so should be OK. That said, you can buy screen protectors with camera covers too.

The lens is also fairly durable and does not scratch nearly as easily as the screen.
Last, a lens needs to be very scratched up for it to have a significant impact on your pictures.
http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/tip/1095/does-a-lens-scratch-really-impact-your-photos/
if you have no need to use the camera, you dont need to take it off. but if you do want to use the camera, take the darn thing off! it wont get scratched very easy, believe me. i probably take more photos here than anyone else, on a daily level, and not a scratch on mine. been using since new years. and those screen savers with camera covers, they reduce image quality. personally, im very anal about the quality of the images, and anytrhing that covers or "protects" the camera lens cover will reduce image quality, no matter if it says it doesnt or someone says they dont notice.

I imagine the lens scratches really easily but luckily its actually underneath a layer of glass.
As a keen photographer myself, I only partially agree with the link. Probably wouldn't matter on a device like this but as a general rule it would.

Good job. It would just fall off eventually.
Also please remove the IMEI sticker from the back. Some people think it has a purpose or isn't removable for some odd reason.

I don't see how taking photos would scratch the lens =P I think it's more of being in your pocket or leaving it on the table with no case on. Also, as OP found out, the plastic has a center opening for the actual camera and only covers everything around it.
@ OP After I RMA'd my phone I kept the plastic on there. However, after getting a dbrand skin that came with a lens covering, I used it to replace the plastic. A lot of skins now come with them, and as @rootSU said you can order transparent ones that probably will stay on the phone better.
I was worried about possible dust inside top corner left main camera sensor (as you can see here https://youtu.be/2KfBsb_qEeE)
Seems to be fixed by nice redpoint73 answer, and after checking again, this isn't a piece of dust (maybe part of OIS mecanism).
Thanks again.
I'm a photography enthusiast (DSLRs, and now moved to a full frame mirrorless camera), and what I can tell you is NOT to be concerned about a single speck (or even several) of dust, if that is even what it is. A single speck of dust (or a few) will never show up on photos or video.
Here are a couple interesting articles from a popular website for renting camera lenses (Lensrentals.com):
First article is about the effect of dusk or scratches on a lens. When you look at the example photos taken with a "fairly bad" lens, they do seem pretty soft/blurry. Then you scroll down to see a picture of what the lens actually looks like, and it's pretty funny. I won't give it a away, it's better viewed yourself. But the point is that a lens can be in really rough shape, and still take decent photos. And even the lens in question, they had to try very hard (very specific circumstances) to get the "scratches" to show up in the photos:
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2008/10/front-element-scratches/
Another article, they found an entire house fly inside a lens, and it didn't even affect the photos except when stopped down to f13 (which isn't common to stop down that far) and even then, it was just a shadow, barely visible.
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/04/removing-fly-from-weather-sealed-canon-70-200mm/
Now, this is a big DSLR lens. And something as big as a house fly would have a much larger effect on a tiny phone lens. But the point being, a speck of dust is not even going to be visible under any conditions on your phone's camera.
Another good example, you can actually take photos through a chain link fence; or fabric mesh such as at a baseball field or other sports. If you get the lens up close to the fence or mesh, and take a photo of a subject far away, you will see that the mesh practically disappears. This also works taking photographs through some very dirty or scratched glass, such as exhibits at a zoo. If you can get the lens close up to the glass, even really dirty/scratched glass becomes nearly invisible. Same exact principle for dust on the lens. Since it is so "close" to the lens, it is not going to be visible. And anything on the lens has to get pretty bad, before it has any effect on the pictures. Really dirty/greasy glass on the camera phone's lens does make a difference - but you practically have to have a layer of dirt or grease.
I do have an old HTC One (M8) that has quite a few specks of dust on the inside of the back camera lens. Don't know if dust was getting inside somehow (that seemed to be the case). It looked pretty bad (looking at the lens) after using the phone a couple years - usually carrying it in my pocket. Maybe dozens of specks of dust on the inside of the lens - not just one or a few. But I can still not see any affect on the pictures.
Thanks for your long answer.
I'm not worried about it anymore, thanks to your thoughts, but also after that I'm pratically sure that it's not a small piece of dust.
Thanks again

You're welcome. Although there is a button for that (thanks).
Also, please don't change the thread title like you did to "Solved" and delete the original content. This is really bad forum etiquette. It may be "solved" for you. But others may have a similar question or issue. A thread is never truly "solved" or "closed" (for everyone) in my opinion, as others may have additional information, questions, opinions, etc. And having a descriptive title (and keeping the original post) helps others find the info, know what the thread is about, etc.
If everyone did this, the forum would be full of empty threads, and the whole forum would be useless.
Please change the thread title and top post back to what you originally posted (as best you can remember, doesn't need to be perfect).
^agree, keep original title intact! Cheers
@basongwe I hope you don't mind as suggested by @redpoint73 and @galaxys but I've re-established the title of this thread as it was provided by you the last time.
I've done it too but thanks

Interesting but I clearly had a speck of dirt that showed up in photos on my OP6. I could see it in the lens and was very visible in photos.
