Wine is an emulator that allows Windows apps to run under Linux.
As far as flashing goes, I remember seeing a few other threads around asking this question, and the general consensus was no.
Wine IS Not a Emulator
as far as I know wine does not work for drivers so the activesync serial driver will mostlikly not work...
you can alternatively find a windows pc to flash hard spl and then use the sd card flash method for any further rom flashing.
pof has an open source ROM flahser. U could try that for nothing. I cant post a link cos im on Opera Mini but its in the Dev and Hacking forum, shouldnt be that hard to find.

I know that this technically doesnt answer the question...but is there a reason one would be against SD card flashing? (assuming that you have one)
ok, yeah, I did try pof's before, but it said "wrong architecture", so I overrode it with
Code:
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture htcflasher_20080615-2_i386.deb
Now it appears to be working fine

Well, ROM flashing from a SD Card would be OK. The problem arises when you need to flash an SPL or the like. It's been reported that flashing an SPL from SD is possible, just not recommended.
Correct, but in the life of my blue angel, hermes, and now kaiser...I've had to do hardspl maybe 4 times. A windows pc is easy to come by imo.

I am a mac user and I use Parallels to virtualize windows xp.....
up until now I didn't have a problem with it....even if it's not running natively i was able to flash roms , radios and change spl many times
not sure about wine....but you can always try with VirtualBox on linux
RUU uses active sync to transport the image to the device as far as I can tell, so beside the installer at least active sync (or working equivalent) should run

I've tried installing the file using the bootloader method countless times now and every time I get a coloured screen with "Serial" at the bottom and some text up the top.
I've tried the card as it was when I got it, Tried it formatted FAT32 with windows, tried it formatted with Resco on the device, etc. It's definitely FAT32.
When I open any of the 3 .exe files from Palm in winzip or winrar there are two .nbh files (CHEEIMG.nbh and CHEEIMG_FW.nbh) one is ~263kb and one is ~85MB.
From everything I have read so far I ignore the correctly named small one (CHEEIMG.nbh) and copy the big one (CHEEIMG_FW.nbh) to the SD card - once thats done I rename it to CHEEIMG.nbh and I should be good to go - start the bootloader and it should work but it's just not happening.
Am I missing something? I just can't get it to work. I've tried the 3, vodafone and generic (ROW) files.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT:
I'm currently running TREO750-1.15-ROW
Firmware: 1.27.3b.00
Cheers
As far as I understand all this you have to run Hard-SPL first, otherwise your device won't load "foreign" roms.
hmm ok I'll try that but since it's a ROW to ROW update I thought it's not a foreign ROM?

I think you can flash all official and leaked without Hard-SPL... It's needed for cooked roms.
surely I shouldn't need it for the bootloader method?
Anyone got any ideas that may help me upgrade?
I just know I will get a lot of **** for this question. Before you judge me, remember where you guys were some time ago. And yes I did read the viki....
A bit confused about how to install a rom. For example I plan to install Dutty's Dual Touch 1.1. I did install Hard SPL.
What is the procedure to install a rom?
Thanks,

Assuming you're on WinXP, the procedure is as follows. (If you run Vista, do this before you proceed.)
Install the HardSPL properly on your device (you did this).
All that is left to do now is:
a. Download the ROM of your choice (in your case Dutty's Dual Touch 1.1)
b. On your PC, unzip dutty's file to e.g. desktop (there should be two files now, Kaiser_RUU.exe and RUU_Signed.nbh. Both files should be in the same folder.)
c. Connect your Kaiser to your PC via USB (make sure the Kaiser's battery is adequately charged up)
d. Launch Kaiser_RUU.exe and follow instructions on your PC screen
Do not mess with the device, USB cable, computer, toaster (and other kitchen appliances), TV OR girlfriend till the upgrade is completely done!
Good luck, and I'm not liable for anything that may happen to your device by following what I wrote here (except if it's positive...then all credit goes to the good guys developing these great ROMs for us!)

H.

USB + Power + active synch (MDC)
I’ve used
Herm Unlock v3
Magic Unlocker
CheetahUnlocker
They all run ok
I’m pretty sure the device is unlocked!
SD card is FAT32, CHEEIMG.nbh resides at the root.
Reset + left button
Rainbow screen appears
CHEE100
IPL-0.20
CHEE100
SPL-1.40.01iNex
And that is as far as It gets!!!!
it just sits there and does nothing can anyone assist ?

Actualy you should first understand that even if your Trëo is compatible with wm6.1 you must be sure that it is compatible with the rom that you are trying to install,
Next you should try to download the rom again so you can be sure that the rom you are trying to load is not corrupted...
and if all this is done you will probably need to try out the USBcable install mode!
Realy hope that you can solve your problem
[[]]
ROM, is the third different source (same version) to ensure no corruption.
USBcable install mode, can you provide any further details?

strange that you can't install that, it's usually very simple and fast...
let me see if I understand, you are saying that you are trying to install the file when it is connected to your computer but the "cheeming" is on the SD card?!
If that's what you are doing just unplug the USB cable, you can't sync and use your SD at the same time... Just use the POWER cable and repeat all the process...
If that doesn't work for you, you should create a folder on your computer desktop and copy the "cheeming" to that folder, next copy whatever program you have used to change the SPL to that same folder.
Make a backup of the original files from your mobile, I hope you wont need them, but you should backup anyway...
then run the program and "cross your fingers"...
in about 5 or less minutes it should be done, and your treo should be runing your new WM6.1
This is the "risky" way, because you can "brick" your Treo, and I can assure you that it isn't easy to "unbrick"!
Hope you can do it with the SDcard method.
If I can help in any other way, please post or add on msn.

how i flash with usb
couple things to do. download a kaiser custom ruu. unrar or unzip your new rom you want to flash. best to have seperate folder to do this. rename the rom file to RUU_signed.nbh then run the kaiser ruu and follow the steps. very simple to do. make sure active sync is enabled before doing this.
A couple day ago I've installed a new ROM (Touch FLO Manila 2D) on my Herald using "FLASH CENTER". It has worked for some time, but after one rebooting the system didn't start any more - after turning on it appears a green screen for a pair seconds, then my Herald goes automatically down. And it repeats again and again... And it is not possible to restore the system though ActiveSync, because the Herald doesn't start at all.
I have looked through in this forum for possible rescue options. one of them seemed to be FLASHING FROM SD CARD. But this had no effect - a tricolor has appeared, but it happened nothing more. Probably there is possible to install a ROM this way on working WINDOWS MOBILE' s and not at broken.
I thought - may be it is possible to install a Windows Mobile on SD CARD (something like portable version) and so boot a system from SD Card ???
I hope you can help me.
Thanks.

This is the wrong forum for this. I have written a few guides on how "unbrick" the Herald.
You can flash just fine from the tricolor screen. (That's where the phone takes you automatically when you flash "from" windows mobile.) So no worries, you aren't out of luck. Worse case scenario, you search for the GoldCard method if nothing else works.
Hello!
Thank you for your help.
You say, I am on right way with my "tricolor screen". But why doesn't happen anything? May be:
- should I just take another SD Card? My is 1 GB - is it OK, too big, too small?
- did I something wrong with "flashing" methods? I did it 2 ways:
- just with any ROM-File in NBH-Format, which was renamed to HERAIMG.NBH and placed alone to the formated SD Card
- in addition to HERAIMG.NBH also other files (like "EnterBootloader.exe"), which are often inclusive in ROM- ZIPs.
- I should be more patient and wait more than 1 hour with a hope that anything will change?
Could you give me the links for "unbricking" the Herald?
Thanks a lot.
You misunderstood me. You don't flash with the SD card through the tricolor screen. You flash through the regular flash center. If you're not hardSPL you have to flash the stock ROM.
As far as the flashing through SD goes, it should give you a countdown before the tricolor screen appears. If it doesn't, or if it's too fast to read, then your SD card is too slow.
As it loads this tricolor screen I see the following data:
IPL 1.08.0001
SPL 1.08.0001
Perhaps it means, that I indeed need a GOLDCARD method.
You don't flash with the SD card through the tricolor screen. You flash through the regular flash center.

But the FLASH CENTER works only on WINDOWS. So I can't use the regular flash center, because my Herald doesn't start up and ActiveSync doesn't see him.

This means that you attempted to flash a HardSPL or another SPL when your SPL did not meet the state requirements. You NEED to create a Goldcard.

No, the flash center doesn't only work in Windows. It works on the bootloader mode. ActiveSync's icon turning green doesn't mean that activesync saw the phone, it means that it can synchronize your information with the computer.

If you broke your SPL like I mentioned above, you will have to use the Goldcard first then you will be able to flash any stock Herald/Tmobile Wing ROM.

I don't know if it will be too slow for that, too. But if you broke your SPL, the goldcard is the ONLY way to fix it.
The problem is - for GOLD Card I need a working WINDOWS Mobile Handy... and I don't have such one at the moment.
Is it possible to become a standard GOLD Card, which would be suitable for most of Heralds?
Thanks

I've installed Linux on my computer, but i can't find a correct command to read a CID of my SD Card. My SD is located in Linux under "/media/disk-1" and I try to write something like "cat /media/disk-1:*/cid", but the Linux doesn't recognize CID command at all.
Actually, I hope, that after getting CID it will not be difficult to obtain a goldcard.img through QMAT. Am I right?
Thanks.
Question to those who have updating their Dream from Rogers, was it at all slow or where their noticeable improvements?
I have one at my disposal but running stock OS (1.5/1.6 i assume). Anyone have a nice and easy to follow tutorial to update this phone without hassles? Also does updating android OS require rooting the device?
Thanks in advance.

Follow instructions. This seems to me to be the easiest guide. Be careful of the Rogers/T-Mobile thing. Seems there are different radio's and such. I don't know anything about Rogers. As far as Roms, I use HTCclay's Superfly TCBY. Lot of memory left on phone. Just try a few to see which you like. Good Luck.
By the way, you do have to be rooted. The guide will walk you through it.

I would say to try the ROM in my sig (the stock ROM)
works for g1 and 32B Magic
he is going to need the EBI1 kernel to go with the rom.
Ok I am reviving this thread because I want to make sure I am following the right steps in doing so. Don't want to mess this up.
Successfully rooted the phone following video I found in the second post of this thread. Can't link you to it because I am still a new member =S! I checked the radio version of the phone and it is 3.22.20.17. Which ROM is recommended? As I said, I just want to get rid of this terrible stock rom from rogers and put froyo (which in turn also allows me to get touch screen keyboard activated) on here.
Thanks in advance.
With that radio you will need to flash ebi1 kernels after you flash the roms.
I completely forgot that Rogers blocked the virtual keyboard with their firmware. That's such bull****.

Now you have more information in the link in your sig. Question: Can you re up the RS link you have there? Also, rooting the phone just means that you have the app called Superuser?
Now I get quite lost the moment you start explaining the options HTC Dream users have. Is there a recommended ROM to download for this phone considering its specs?

Yes it is sad that rogers has done this. Do whatever they can to screw the consumers over. Just found out it is 1.5.

Ok still lost on trying to do this and want to follow the set up from cyanogen but its really complicated. I don't want to make a backup of contacts and stuff because it wasn't originally my phone.
Do I still need the amon_ra's recovery?

Think of what you need to do:
1) Obtain root access so that you can flash a new recovery
2) Replace recovery so that you can flash new SPL
3) Flash new SPL so that you can be more compatible with roms / kernels
4) Flash a new rom (IE/ Cyanogenmod 6), and a compatible EBI1 kernel (for instance, Brian Crook's ones on the Cyanogenmod website)
Without getting into huge detail, you do it in this order to prevent your device from being unable to boot / recover.
You can flash the new RADIO and SPL from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=831139
Along with that, you use the appropriate supported +14MB EBI0 kernel.
More RAM is good
Well that makes sense.
Now I am following the Cyanogen wiki link (can't post there) and it says to launch flash rec but I can't understand from where I have to do this. Anyone care to help? And how does the Andriod SDK help?

Andriod sdk has the adb component needed to initiate commands to your device from your computer. then you need the android windows usb drivers.after installing sdk to see if you have connection with your device, open console on your computer start>run>type cmd and hit enter at the prompt type adb you should get several lines back kind of an options menu. at next prompt type adb devices. if your device is recognized you will get back:
device XXXXXXXX (this will be an actual number).
if you dont get any devices back with your phone attached to usb then you probably need the driver. just google it.
as for flashrec I dont believe I used this. I used exploid to gain root and install 1.33.2005 spl
Where do I get the android driver for windows (7 64bit specifically)? Adb command aint working in my cmd.
So what do I do about flashrec? Man updating this thing is driving me nuts. So many unexpected curves.
I also have Windows 7 64bit and I didn't need a driver it just works for me. Please tell us exactly what you are typing in and what output you are getting. You could also try the instruction to install the usb driver here:

Does the zip file for the android SDK make a difference if I can't install it through the .exe? It keeps saying that it doesnt detect the Java SDK when I try to install.
Yes, you can use the .zip. Extract it, run setup.exe, install Platform-tools, cd to the platform-tools directory then you can use adb. Fastboot is in the tools directory. That was just changed in the 2.3 sdk update so I don't know if the guide has been updated yet.

The only .exe file in the zip is the SDK Manager which isnt exactly an install.
