As Fortune.com first reported, the new 8-gigabyte iPhone will cost $199 and
a 16-gigabyte version will cost $299. Jobs says the new iPhone will be
available worldwide starting July 11. It will allow up to six hours of Web
browsing and five hours of talk time.
Jobs announced the 3G iPhone, which had been rumored for months, at the
company's annual World Wide Developers conference in San Francisco.
Apple shares fell 4% after the iPhone announcement, as some investors were
left wanting more from the gadget maker. The stock had been up 55% in the
past three months on heightened expectations for a radically improved iPhone
and the possibility of other product launches.

Worldwide Developer Conference 2008 Keynote Live Coverage
http://iquizshare.com/News/Latest/iPhone-3G-for-199-available-in-over-70-countries.html
iphone 3GApple's 2008 Worldwide Developer Conference has just finished.
Highly anticipated 3G iPhone is announced to be available at $199 on July
11th. A number of cool features, including enterprise supports, games,
language
supports, and GPS, are also demonstrated. A white-color version of iPhone
will also be available.
First, let's talked about the new iPhone.
1. It supports 3G network, which means faster data transfer. It is
estimated to be 2.8 times faster. When compared to Nokia N95 and Treo 700,
the new 3G iPhone is 36% faster. The speed is approaching wifi level.
2. It has longer battery life. Standby: 300 hours, 2G talk time: 10 hours
(twice as before), 3G talk time: 5 hours, High-speed browsing: 5-6 hours,
Video: 7 hours (I was a bit surprised to know that high-speed browsing
consumes battery as much as playing video …), 24 hours of audio listening.
3. It now has built-in GPS. In addition to location information from wifi
networks and cellphone-towers, 3G iPhone now has realtime GPS tracking. You
can now see a moving dot on google map!
4. Available in 70 countries, including China, Japan, Australia. (This is
a bit inconsistent which information presented on Apple's official website,
http://www.apple.com/iphone/countries/, Hong Kong is there listed in July 11 release, but China is listed in nowhere.)
5. Available at $199 for the 8GB version, 16GB-version costs $299, a
white-color model also will be available.
6. Rolling out in the coming few months.
Second, the iPhone 2.0 software.
1. Integration of iPhone, Mac, and PC via MobileMe.com. Everything stays
in sync between iPhone, Mac, and PC. Data gets synched automatically both
ways.
2. Software include iCal, Mail, Exchange, AddressBook, Contacts, and
Gallery. Also works with Outlook. iDisk is also integrated into MobileMe.com
, which will replace .Mac. Current .Mac users will be upgraded automatically
. The membership will cost $99 per year. However, with the new iPhone 2.0
purchase, there is a 60-day free trial with MobileMe.com.
3. Enterprises has the ability to distribute apps just to their employees
. iPhones can be authorized within enterprise through their intranet.
4. Available in 62 countries.
5. Free for iPhone users. $9.99 for iPod Touch users (I hate this! Just
paid $19.99 for the last upgrade, now another 10 bucks! Ah, well … )
Third, the App-store.
1. Apple has a 7:3 split revenue share with developers. Developers get 70
%. If an app is free, there is no charge to the developer.
2. Announced Games and Apps:
* Modality: an app for remembering the names of parts of the body.
Available at the launch of the App Store.
* MLB.com. Live and detailed scoring for baseball games, real-time
video highlights delivered right after the play. Available at the launch of
the App Store.
* Band: includes a virtual piano, drums, 12-bar blues "instrument",
and a bass. Impressive sound quality and recording function. Available for
free.
* Loopt, a location-aware social network. The app displays a map
with pins representing where your friends currently are, also made available
to call or to text them. There are also user profiles showing a log of
where the person has been and the photos they've sent in. Available free at
the launch of the App Store.
* eBay: auctions on the iPhone. Features include auctions listed,
bid on, out-bid on, and a custom photo viewer.
* AP (Associated Press): the Mobile News Network. It gathers content
from many trusted sources. It makes use of the location API by
automatically showing nearby sources. Allows news video and photos to be
viewed directly through the app. An iPhone user can even report news first-
hand onsite with photos and texts. Available free at the launch of the App
Store.
* TypePad. Their native app makes it very simple to blog or send in
a photo. The photo can be taken right then using the camera, or be selected
from the gallery. Available free at the launch of the App Store.
* Digital Legends: 3D fantasy adventure game. Available by September.
* The MIMvista application: for viewing medical imagery. Takes
advantage of the touch screen to change the information shown, zoom in and
out, and scroll around. The images can be also rendered in 3D. Available at
the launch of the App Store.
* Sega's Super Monkey Ball with over 100 levels. Available at the
launch of the App Store for $9.99.
* Two games from Pangea Software: Enigmo, a physics-based game, and
Cro-Mag Rally, a 3D racing game. Both will be on the App Store at launch for
$9.99.

Any source on that? Just saying some random numbers isn't the most thorough analysis...

One link: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/serv...9/BNStory/Technology/home?cid=al_gam_mostview
And another: http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/25/the-second-gen-iphone-3g-gps-only-slightly-thicker/

I can confirm it's on the BBC, CNN, Reuters sites.
same crap camera though. it's on a monthly contact though. sounds cheap. it's like saying HTC Diamond - FREE!
i'm tempted, i really am. there's a good chance i'll get one if the Xperia X1 isn't announced for September/October.
I heard something about a red (red campaign) version on CNET earlier - confirmation?

HTC Diamond's price is greater than $700 USD.
I may switch to AT&T and dump sprint.

On a contract, the Diamond may well be free (in the UK at least) the iPhone will probably be £200 in the uk though...

Hmm, I-Fone-II with 3G and GPS - it sounds just the ticket, now where can I purchase a decent navigation package to run ON THE DEVICE - no stupid GPRS/3 downloading of maps etc, perhaps I need to visit the planet Pluto.
Isn't 3G growing a tad old though these days, the need for speed dictates something faster which is being made available on more up to date devices, perhaps the I-Fone-III will have 3,5G in another 12 months - Mike

My sprint touch was not free. I paid about $250 with a 2-year contract.

UK operators have huge subsides on phones...
Which is why the iPhone seemed so expensive as Apple weren't allowing operator subsidies... And it was only on O2...

you forgot the 2-years contract requirement. so if it comes with no contract we're looking at $399-$499 for 8gb and $499-$599 for the 16gb version

That seems rediculous... 3G (HSDPA) with good coverage in the UK is cheaper... and US 3G is far less extensive...

It's still much cheaper than the Diamond or even the Kaiser...

i like the Diamond better though... i despise Apples way of Marketing and restraining the development of third party Apps.
You had to "crack" the iPhone Software to do anything useful with the iPhone besides making calls and sending Text Messages.
And the way the Phone tried to track your location by triangulation was just ridiculous, you never got accurate results about your current location, just a circle which displayed the radius in which you COULD be.

Lets also kiss that jailbraking goodbye as you can only get the phone with activation in either an apple store or at&t store! weeeeeeeee!!!

The iPhone has aGPS not regular GPS, is aGPS bettter? I undersatand how each one gets the position fix but will one not work without a data connection?

Tegra II Gtab users...who is getting a Motorla Atrix?

I love my gtab but i can see how it might get semi-replaced right off the bat with this Motorla Atrix. Similiar specs and the ports that include laptop key board style usability combined with one for Media outputs will be readily available and easy to find....
My Iphone 3gs contract is up and i am seriously considering this device.
I know there is probably a seperate forum for this phone already but i wanted to see what GTAB users thought about it.
Here is a link fort those in the dark.
It has the Tegra processor, a laptop style doc, a multimedia style doc, and a car doc. Android 2.2.
http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/motorola-atrix.jsp#fbid=Pz0w4Bi9BCz
I wont be getting any locked devices. If Motorola locks the bootloader then I'll wait for something else
I will be getting the Atrix and the docks, this is going to be one bad-azz phone. I am tired of my Iphone after using the Gtab, I have seen the light...
Then again, after reading around about Motorola philosophy of lock down "buy elsewhere" attitude...i may get the Samsung Infuse instead.
Honestly....if i wanted the locked down "buy elsewhere" attitude, why the frack wouldnt i just get the iphone 4 or iphone 5...that attitude kinda DEFEATS the WHOLE purpose of andorid..
No thanks. I'll pass for these reasons:
1. It's a phone, and I have one of those already. I also like to cost of the data plan I'm tied to at the moment.
2. Screen size - I got the G-tablet because I wanted the 10" screen for book/web/whatever reading.
3. If it's going to be locked down like Motorola says it will be, no thanks.
4. AT&T. Plain and simple - I've had way too many bad experiences with them to make me EVER go back.
It's an interesting concept, and if an open alternative which follows that model (specialized docks, etc.) is developed in the future, I may consider moving when I am ready to boot my phone. But at this moment, I'm not seeing anything that's giving me that "I have to have it" wow factor.

To each his own. My experiences with Verizon will make me NEVER go back...EVER.
Years ago i bought a phone with a shared line family plan for me and my wife with verizon...each month the second phone was billed outside of the plan, each month Verizon admitted their mistake, said they would correct the issue and apologized, then the next month..SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN. After 8 months of that i told them to f*k off and have NEVER been back since.
AT&T on the other hand..i go over my minutes, i call them ask for a new plan...they up the plan and then TAKE OFF THE EXTRA CHARGES...EVERY TIME. Want to drop a line a few months early? No problem...done..no early cancellation fee. They shipped me a bad phone once..no problem..new one sent and old one mailed back, no charge. Battery died a little early once..no problem, service girl in store gave me a free one swapped out of a demo unit..NO CHARGE...the list goes on forever like this. Seriously, their customer service is Five star...its good enough that i am willing to accept the dead zones on I20 in a 4 mile area between augusta and atlanta and one in mid columbia thats about 2 miles long...
Just saying..for every "i hate AT&T" story....i have ones about how Verizon has the WORST customer service in the HISTORY of cell phones when it comes to needing something done. (and not come back the VERY next month..until you LOSE IT and go PSYCHO after 2/3rds of a year...)
OH and coverage? We have all seen the commercials right..the maps? I have traveled with my AT&T to cincinatti, NYC, Richmond, Charlotte, Winston Salem, Columbia, Greensboro, Atlanta, Valdosta, Northen LA, Asheville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinberg, Savanna, Chaleston, Myrtle beach, Hilton Head, DC, Va Beach, North Kentucky, etc...
Zero problems..
My sister and mothers house in Pleasant Graden NC...NO VERIZON coverage...AT&T phone works fine there..no problems.
Maybe i just have bizzaro luck..or maybe the commercials about Verizons coverage are over-hyped??
I dont know...personal experience versus commercials..im going to go with my actual experience

The G-tab has a 10" screen. These are two completely different products. There's no way I would consider going smaller unless it is as a complimentary device, not a replacement.
1. AT&T Fail
2. Not 10" screen
3. Not a tablet
4. Better products will be out soon enough
I won't be buying it.
At&t 3G coverage as terrible unless in larger city areas. Not as bad as Tmo, but neither are in the same league for 3G as VZW.
Bionic seems interesting, but no buy if the bootloader is locked. I may be keeping my Inc a LOT longer than planned
It works great with gTablet for tethering, so okay with me
BTW, 4.3" seems big (for a phone it is), but try a 4.3" display for about 15 minutes and then try the gTablet. The 4.3" is functionally no better than than a 3.7" in comparison.
I believe a phone that docks into everything is that future, but the atrix isn't quite there yet.

Well regarding the Atrix it has a VERY small screen...but the orginal post was referring to the ability to use a keyboard 15inch screen laptop as a PORT!
Complimentary device maybe...but with the right phone i might use the gtab...less than i do now.
The iphone is DEFINATELY going...
What new phone style products are coming that might be better options?

The infuse has a 4.5 inch screen..that thing almost seems like a small tablet compared the years i have spent surfing o my 3GS.
Regarding AT&Ts service..you might be on to somehting there. 99% of my travel is to LARGE cities. For the last 4 years namely its been NYC and Atlanta. When i go home though..in the TINY city of lexington SC from my home....3G service works great. At my girl friends home in Augusta GA, 3G service works great. Usually when i am in a small town though, i am at someones house who has wi-fi hooked up (including mine).
To each his own but Verizons customer serivce is so horrible..i wouldnt care if they had 10G service i would not use them. I might feel different if my luck with always having a 3G or wi-fi signal wasnt so good all the time though.
My gtab mainly does duty as a light alternative to my lap top for when im in the bed surfing the net or want to watch a movie on something in bed or on an airplane etc. I use it as a newsreader from a book stand on my desk at work also through out the day and it makes a great orginizer from same position. I have COMPLETELY stopped using it to type on or try to create any content though...couldnt handle the touch screen keyboard, its worse than using both the lap top and the iphone. It also works great to watch movies on long car trips and for quick "let me check on that" type of internet tasks from home when i am too inpatient to wait for the lap top to boot up.
Truthfully all these devices have their role but i initially posted about the Atrix as it seemed possibly capable of crossing into multiple roles.
One more thing to consider regarding carriers and then i will drop it.
This is a HUGE one.
AT&T has grandfathered all of its users who had smart phones prior to June of 2010 in so that they will continue to get UNLIMITED data for $29.00 a month regardless of how many times they renew or change phones.
Verizon may offer that for one time only introductory rate only, but everyone else (and when your contract is up) you will be locked into only getting 2G per month at a rate only $5.00 cheaper a month.
Now in 2013 rolls around ill be able to get 5G or more in data a month using the SAME technology verizon has, for probably HALF the cost (verizon charges I think $20 extra per G over the 2G) while retaining superior customer service.
Math:
5G from Verizon=$25+$20+$20=$65.00
5G from AT&T grandfathered customers=$29.00
This will be the reality by the time i get around to my next cell phone contract (after the one im about to start) as AT&T will have its LTE network up by then in the larger cities..
So there is that...

Actually, I find it quite funny about how you totally ignored the meaning of my post and turned the whole thing into an evangelism for AT&T - all while assuming I use Verizon.
The purpose of my post was to state that I bought the G-tab because I wanted a large-screened tablet for reading/web surfing/similar tasks. I already have a phone with a data plan, and I do not want another. I also didn't go with an iPad or a Galaxy tab for the same reason - to get one at a price point similar to the G-tab, I would have to go with one that is subsidized by a carrier. Which means another data plan to pay for.
BTW, comparing the Atrix and the G-Tab is a waste of time as most people will treat them as two separate products with different purposes.
The Samsung phone you linked to was nice, but you glossed over the fact that I said that I didn't want another phone at this time - or in the near future.
Regarding the whole AT&T vs Verizon thing - I have had bad experiences with AT&T for quite a long time; even going as far back to before AT&T took over Cingular. It wasn't a one-time incident, and eventually I gave up dealing with them. It's my choice not to deal with them as much as it's your choice to use them.
I know there are plenty of people that have had bad customer service issues with my carrier of choice as well - which, by the way, is Sprint and not Verizon.
BigJohn
Various blogs have reported that Motorola is leaving the bootloader unlocked.
I read the reviews and it seams the laptop dock is pretty much just a gimmick and not all that useful. Sweet phone though. If I was going to spend a ton of cash on a phone and or a new plan anyways I might consider it. Happy with my gTab and HD2 for now though.
I'm def. not.
599/499 for a phone and a dock with a screen? I think not. It's essentially still just a phone. Some people change their phones every year or 2. So you're either locking yourself into an expensive short term investment or willing to hold on to older tech for longer, in which case maybe it would be worth it. You're also locked into a data contract for 2 years - inflating the cost of the package drastically.
Option 2 is a tablet for 379/399, a $40 wireless mouse/kb bundle from logitech or ms and a $50 hdmi dock, then hook it up to your LCD TV or monitor and voila, similar effect albeit not as mobile as the atrix lapdock, but if you're willing to carry that around in a bag, why not just buy a more powerful netbook or laptop for $300 upfront and let that be that? It just doesn't make much sense at the current price point.
It's a gimmick, imho.
If the entire dock were maybe $100-150 then it might pass as worthwhile. That would essentially give you a phone and 'netbook' transformer for $350 which is around the cost of a netbook/laptop/tablet. At 299/399 with/without a rebate for the dock alone and that's not including the cost of being locked into a contract for 2 years....whereas the VS is 399 off the bat, no catch, it's not really for me. To each his own though. I'm sure there are reasons to get it.

[Q] Talk mobile data coverage for Xoom 3G in the UK?

Hi all,
I'm going to play with the Xoom at Carphone warehouse tomorrow. My main concerns are the overall ergonomic and screen quality.
If I'm happy with the Xoom, I'll buy it for £130 and 5GB of data per month for 24 months with Talk mobile at £25p/m.
My main concern is I never used Talk mobile before and would like some input about there data coverage in the UK please? I'm located in north London area.
Many thanks
It uses vodaphones network so coverage seems quite good! I get 6mb download speed in my house (knowsley 10 miles from Liverpool city) yet barely get a phone signal at all on my android phone! Downside is Vodaphone have an 'adult content control' which stop you from accessing some. Completely innocent sites and talkmobile told me they can only lift it after 3 months! I've not been able to access some news sites either... I wouldn't mind but even if I was looking for porn, why would I have to wait 3 months? Does that make any difference? Will the xoom have cleansed my muddy soul by then?? ;-)
Anyway back on topic... its been great signal for me so far... even got gprs on a campsite surrounded by hills in Wales...

Worst Tablet launch? Xoom or Playbook or Touchpad

Each one of these tablets launch and had major issues right out of the gate.
The Xoom had major features included but NOT WORKING (sd card and LTE) and a very high price tag $800. What where they smoking!!
The Playbook had core BB components missing and had to be use with a BB phone to get full use from. So was it a work tablet or movie player, FOR A BB!!
The Touchpad launched to so-so reviews, has had several big price drops within weeks of it launch. Now rumors of Bestbuy asking HP to buy back overstock units to the tune of nealy 250,000, only 25000 have been sold. OUCH!!
Which one of these companies really missed the mark and may have lost the market they where aiming for?

Anyone here know the upgrade dates for 3?

When I got my first Android device at Christmas 2011, which was an old HTC Desire that offered a rather lowly specification compared to more recent devices (especially in the storage department where there was less than even 1GB of internal storage for apps), I instantly fell in love with the operating system. Having never utilised a smart phone before in daily life, besides Samsung's failed Bada OS which frankly sucked, I just loved the practicality of being able to access the internet wherever I was. From simply checking the date for someone's birthday on Facebook when I enter a shop, or scanning a barcode and finding a better price in the shop next door, to simply playing some Angry Birds whilst waiting for someone, I really found a smart phone incredibly useful. Since I predominately use a smart phone for its apps, and seldom actually make phone calls and not even a ton of text messages, the natural choice would probably be a tablet. However, since my old HTC had a rubbish old battery and was getting grubby, I needed a new phone also. The hybrid tablet/phone Galaxy Note fitted this perfectly and I got it on a monthly contract from 3 around 4 months ago now. The unlimited 3G data (no 4G here in the UK till September at the earliest) was especially appealing for just £27 GBP a month. However, now the Note 2 has been announced and, besides it being much more powerful and having improved software, a 4G version (which I presume will come to the UK as it is getting 4G now) is set to release. So, does anyone know when you can get an upgrade on a 3 Mobile 2-year contract?

Carrier Comparison Sheet

Our contract with Sprint is coming to an end July 31, 2013 and I'm tired of how much we pay for how poor our Sprint service is.
My wife and I both have an Epic 4G Touch (WiMAX) which we never got service for in Louisville, KY, and Sprint has now abandoned.
I'm not going to stick around in hopes of them ever starting up LTE here.
I've started shopping around, and I really want to switch to T-Mobile.
A co-worker and I sit on the 4th floor of a concrete and steel office building right next to North facing windows. My Sprint 3G bandwidth (Sprint has no "4G" here) is 539kbps/434kbps to a server in town. His T-Mobile 3G bandwidth (test phone did not have 4G) 4299kbps/2302kbps!
My wife can get a ~20% through her office for Verizon, and my mother, who is on our plan, gets 50% from AT&T.
Trying to compare different carrier sites can get confusing, so I built a Google spreadsheet with a lot of numbers and some guessing.
I've spent roughly a week working on it and I've found it to be exceptionally helpful.
So helpful, I want to share it with all of you.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0An3-IhR4bhJvdDJQNjBWWjVpbEtVaU03b2VYZGRVWFE&usp=sharing
I've removed the discounts from the formulas, and put a sales tax field so you can change the sales tax percentage should yours not be 6%.
If you're familiar with how spreadsheets work, you can easily add lines (rows) or service add-ons (columns).
Actual communications taxes and fees vary greatly, so I adjusted the amount to be 14% since that's the number that made the Sprint page match what my account is (not exactly I have a 25% discount on mine, but it would match sans the discount [-ish]).
I don't have a tax law degree nor the time to research exact numbers for every place. This will still give you a rough estimate, and err on the high side hopefully. If you know exactly what yours are, feel free to change it to exactly that.
The sheet is shared publicly, anyone can view without having to login.
If you want to change some stuff you'll need to copy it to your Drive (File > Make a copy...) or download it (File > Download as...).
All sheets except for the Comparison sheet have 3 smartphones and a flip phone.
All you need to do is change the prices to what you get on the carriers' websites.
Watch for cells where I left personalized notes
The Comparison sheet aggregates the data from the other sheets so you can view them all together.
I discovered, from my own needs, T-Mobile would save me around $1000/year.
Mods, please move if this would better serve someplace else.
Feedback is greatly appreciated!
A 500 MB data cap? Ouch...

It's actually more than we need, so there's no point in paying extra for unlimited.
The data used by all 4 lines on my Sprint account is ~800MB on an average month.
So T-Mobile's 500MB is more than enough, but AT&T's 300MB is only enough for one of the lines; unfortunately the next size up is 3GB lol
This is why I used the 1GB ATT Mobile Share plan.
If you need unlimited data, just change the numbers to reflect what you need.
