Hello,
Whenever I set an image to my Today Screen, It is very feint, the colours are very dull and not like the original, is there any way to fix this?
I have tried theme makers to try make my own theme using the image that I want but it just does not want to install.
Is there anyway to fix the problem when i set an image to my today screen it is so feint.
I use Windows Mobile 2003.
It's been answered before and it is very easy to solve. Go to the default Pictures & Video program, select the picture you want for background and you will get a level of transparency. If you vary the transparency you will get different effects. What is making it faint is the default transparency set.
Thanks for your help.
I tried that but noticed the defualt pictures program would only load up JPEG pictures. The picture I had was a gif.
http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/1969/boot1qc6.gif
Changing this to a JPEG in Photoshop, even using the highest Quality setting resulted in discoloration. This image that I got was from here, and by the looks of it it is made using 16 bit colour, so it would look the same on the Pocket PC as it would on the computer. But once I converted it to a JPEG, It looked very bad on the pocket pc as a background.
Any Ideas?
Thanks
I can see and set a gif as background using my default Pictures&Video software. Maybe mine is a special tweaked version put in my ROM by the cooks, but if you search here I believe I've seen something about it before and you may be able to download a version that would see files other than jpegs. You may need to point to the folder where your image is. It does not search all folders automatically.

Today screen files appear to have the extension .TSK can you please tell me which folder/file these are stored in and can any file be made into a TSK type file? If so how does one go about it? Also I am not sure how you find these files and/or how can you change the extension of them.
Also what is the difference between the today screen and wallpaper
Also the explorer option only appears to search the 'My Documents' folder does anyone know of a good equivalent tool either as freeware or for purchase.
Thanks in advance John.
Hi
The "theme" files (*.tsk) are stored in \windows\ directory.
TSK consists of such things as:
color scheme for Start menu, bottom bar and application windows.
background picture (today screen background)
start menu style / picture etc
TSK files can be created by various tools (including some outdated one from microsoft)
The option "use this picture as background" lets you override default background (by TSK) with the one you provide.
Thanks but I think its because you can't see the extension, plus as I mentioned the search facilities are crap. You can't search on '*.TSK' for example. I think that is why i asked for an example of a good replacement.
What is the difference between the today screen and Wallpaper. Also are you aware of what tools can create them?
Thanks again John.
Hi again.
You should use your PC to access system files on your PDA.
That gives you faster browsing, file extension view and many more.
Mobile file explorer and PDA functionality in general are designed to be simple for task-oriented working.
Enough of romantic crap
Don't mix "today screen" with "theme" and "wallpaper".
Today screen is a PDA equivalent of PC Windows's desktop.
Theme (in TSK files) is a... well... graphical theme for today screen.
Wallpaper is a picture that's behind anything else on today screen.
Most themes have wallpapers in them. But you can change wallpapers manually (choose bitmap files from memory or use the theme's default wallpaper)
Isn't that simple ?
I don't know any good software to create themes.
In case of making wallpaper...
Just make a bitmap in some standard format (BMP JPG GIF) with resolution that matches your device's display (320x240 in most cases).
You can do that even with windows paintbrush
Have fun.
cetuner is a good way to make themes actually on the pocket pc, which is relatively rare. Most is pc based. But it's not quite as complete as some pc based softare, mainly in manipulating the wallpaper. But i don't use wallpaper, so no issue to me.
Microsoft's free theme maker is a perfectly good place to start. Move on when you reach its limitations.

Does anyone know of a decent freeware WM6.1-compatible picture editor? One that could be used to alter the contrast, brightness and colour of a photo?
I've found that very very few photos can be effectively used as a Home screen background unless they are very dark. The white & grey text become unreadable otherwise.
So ideally I want to darken some pics I have and see if they work better. It'd be nice to be able to do this actually on the phone.
Cheers!
personally i use photoshop..not a freeware..anyway what i wanted to say is that it doesnt need to be "made" for WM6.1...you just need it to be able to resize or crop the image..
TP resolution: width:480 x height:640

Photoshop isn't freeware. Nor does it run on WM6.1. It's not cropping the image that's the problem - the picture viewer on the TP allows resizing and cropping already.
The problem is altering the brightness, contrast and colours of a photo.
I'm looking to be able to do this on the phone itself, preferably using freeware. I already have Photoshop on my PC.
Hope that makes it a little clearer...
hi,
you can do very simple image changes using:

That looks like the baby, thanks, I'll give it a go!
Hmmm, just tried it out. It looks like it has the features I want, but for some reason, whenever I edit a picture, it doesn't save the changes, which is a bit frustrating!
For instance, if I highlight a picture, select Tools > Adjust, I get the screen where I can, for instance, reduce the brightness. Then when I hit the "Adjust" button, it just goes back to the file viewer, and the picture is unaltered.
Most odd!

i know its not freeware that what i said too
i thought you wanted a program that will allow you to make wallpapers, not that it would run on the mobile itself
Have you checked the Diamond section by the way?
Hi Jim,
I've just tried increasing the brightness of an image on my TP with XnView Pocket 1.40 and it seems to work fine. I can adjust the brightness etc and then when I hit the 'Adjust' button a message pops up saying:
The Image xxxxx has been adjusted and and has been saved into xxxxx_m.jpg.
It doesn't alter the original image, it saves the image to an altered file and adds the '_m' to the file name.
I've attached a screen shot of what happens on my TP, are you saying you don't see this screen after you hit the 'Adjust' button?
Cheers,
D.
Hmmm. It wasn't working with a particular picture which was about 8 Megapixels. I cropped it down to about 6 Megapixels in "Pictures & Videos" and then tried again in Xnview and all of a sudden it started working.
Perhaps there is a bug which causes it to fail if the picture is too big?
Actually I think I've sussed the problem - the original file was set to read-only!!! D'oh!
(Would've been nice if the app had reported that though...)
Ah, could be connected to the size of the image. I was using a file that was about 600Kb I must admit. I don't use this often to manipulate images but it is useful to have.
If you're manipulating large images then it may be a task only for your PC.
Cheers & good luck.

I can also use commercial Resco Photo Viewer, but very good freeware editor is UltraG. It is an old-school software with many functions, but a bit complicated,so be patient to use it.
Hi all,
I decided to set a custom wallpaper today on my HTC Touch HD and found one
that was 800x480 so it would fit perfectly on the screen. When I look at the
picture through the file explorer, it looks sharp and exactly what it looked like
on my PC, but when I set it as a wallpaper using the Settings tab
in Touchflo3D, it comes out very blurry. It's almost a low-res version of the
original image.
Is there any way to fix this problem.
Thank you
check if the original image shows sharply.. to first check if the problem is with the image.

Nah mate, all the images I tried are crystal clear and appear crystal clear
when I view them using just file explorer.
They only blur when there set as the wallpaper.
Obviously the problem is not with the quality of the image. i'm just wondering if the conversion changed something.. or if the Touch HD's built in wallpaper changer is having a hard time reading the algorithm.
I am having the same problem. Its crystal clear viewing them with resco photo manager, but blurry with touchflo background. I am using AntWorks Auto Wallpaper Changer. Any solution to this? Thanks in advance
Hey all,,,
I no longer have a touch pro to test this on but my buddy asked if there was a way to prevent his background image from looking grainy when he disables touch flo?
Could some one test this? Does the background image actually get grainy when touchflo is disabled?
Touchflo uses a different background image than the standard windows today screen. When Touchflo is turned off, the windows today screen image will be displayed. The today screen image is contained in the selected theme or can be selected by the user. Some themes just display a blank screen.
Go to Start - Settings - Personal
Select Today
In the appearance tab, there is an option to use another image (picture) as the background. For best results, choose a (.jpg file) image file sized to 480 x 640 pixels (VGA). Any image or photo editing program can be used to crop or edit an image for use on the phone. Put the desired image file in the phone's My Pictures folder (or anywhere else that can be browsed to).
There are themes and background images freely available on this forum and elsewhere.
Great, thanks!
Trying to find an old (perhaps lost) wallpaper. It was installed on my HTC Desire S with GB 2.3.6 (can't remember carrier, it was used). I have been loading several custom ROMs and have now settled on one, but want to copy my old wallpaper back onto sdcard. I have searched the web for hrs AND also extracted images from several custom ROMs looking for that darn image.
Can anyone help?? It was a simple background with a slight texture to it. The color was a sort of light brown or dark beige. I am rather sure it was in stock gallery or theme(s) when I first used the phone. Was perfect. Not too light or dark with good contrast against icons.
BTW, whenever I load a new background (480x800) from web, the phone crops it and then 'expands' the crop (when applied) causing it to loss resolution (maybe a Go Launcher problem?)
Thanks!
I don't know what the wallpaper is, but the other problem is easy to fix. Simply edit the image beforehand and add a 240x800 space on each side, to give you a 960x800 image.
Some launchers let you select a portrait version of the background, some don't (such as yours it seems).
Found the wallpaper!
Eureka! Found the WP I have been seeking. It is a background that is part of the Hi-Black theme, which is part of Go Launcher EX. now I have extracted it and saved it so I can use it whenever I need it. Note: image attached
Also found out how to fix cropping that Go Launcher was doing to custom WPs. Good, making progress.

Would you mind emailing me a copy of that wallpaper? I was looking for it too but I'm not rooted so extraction will be kind of tough. I'll message you too. THanks!
