microphone problem - HTC Tornado

The mic on my Tornado is no longer usable. It started by cutting out to an almost inaudible level. Now it stuck that way. I've tried flashing several ROMs and it doesn't help, so I'm pretty sure it's hardware. Any easy solution to replace the mic?
I probably just going to find a $30 2125 on eBay and use the best skin of the 2 with a new MB.

Try cleaning ?

The mic is welded to the motherboard. There is a little rubber housing around it. Chances are dirt has got it's way and has covered a very small hole on that rubber housing and soft sounds can't get thru. Try cleaning it. You'll need to find a guide to open the phone. Its not that dificult. There are few around. Search here or Google for it.
Best Luck

Thanks. I did take it apart and clean te mic are and the rubber gasket. I blasted it with canned air too. It didn't help. I'm pretty sure it's hardware. I'm wondering if replacing the mic component is an option.

You can pick up quick dry electric cleaner in a can at your local auto shop. I used it to clean my joystick when I wasn't getting any response when I hit it left or down and it worked like a charm. It only took a few minutes to completely dry.

Rear speaker problem fix! FINALLY!!!

I know there are thousands of people looking all over the web for a solution to their captivate's rear speaker cutting out and I am happy to report I have a solution for you! I searched all over these forums, all over google, and by the grace of God I somehow found this suggestion in a comment on a pointless YouTube video with around only a thousand views. But whatever! Here it is...
Take off the back casing of your phone (it's not too difficult; here are the instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022)
Once you have the back all opened up you should see one lone screw remaining just to the left of the speaker
Loosen the screw
That's it!!!!!!!! The guys' comment on YouTube said he noticed the screw was in so tight that that it was bending the circuit board and messing up the connection. Which makes sense to me because earlier I noticed that pushing down on the right side of the speaker (on the opposite side of the screw) seemed to help better than pushing anywhere else.
So stop listening to all the threads that say "just push on the speaker" or "get it repaired" or "just deal with it." I had jammed stuff in behind my back cover that was so thick it started to bend the metal, but it was always just a temporary fix. No pressure was ever enough pressure to get the speaker consistently working. Who knew the answer would be less pressure? Or that it would be so simple...
Now go fix your phone and enjoy!
UPDATE: If you are still having problems, try mithileshpatel007's fix from page two of this thread. Sounds like people have had luck with his method too. He suggests repositioning the speaker ribbon. The ribbon is located on the far right and can be seen going from the bottom of the speaker housing to a small terminal that may be covered by a piece of blue tape. Everything is so tiny that it sort of all looks like one piece but what you can do is...
flip up a tiny black latch (bottom of the terminal)
reposition or remove + replace the ribbon (enters at the top of the terminal). There isn't much slack, but try to get it as far in there as possible
PLEASE BE CAREFUL! The ribbon is tiny and pretty stiff and some people have reported problems just getting their phone open, much less playing around. Remember this is a tiny device made to do big things so it's not as durable as your GameBoy Color! Handle with care.
Clarification
I should clarify. I loosened the screw till it was coming out and then tightened it VERY gently. I screwed it back in and stopped at the first feel of resistance. I did this last night and have been blasting music and getting notifications without any problem since.
Check back in a day or two. A couple hours of a fixed speaker doesn't impress me...been there done that. But I did fix mine tho.

Thanks for this info. My speaker just started acting up the other day. I pushed on it like others have said to, and so far it has been good for a couple of days now. If it so much as acts like it is going to do this again, I will take the above steps.
Thanks!

My speaker is still working great. I understand the skepticism but I wanted to put the post up right away because 1) the fix made so much sense to me, 2) my speaker was ALWAYS cutting out before I did it and NEVER cut out after, and 3) I wanted to help as many people as soon as possible because I know how maddening this problem is!
How did you fix yours? And by the way, impressing you was never my goal
Works!
Thanks for this suggestion! I've been fighting this problem for months now and the tap-tap-push method only ever fixed the problem for a few minutes. Since trying your "fix" my speaker has worked for 2 days now!
Thanks so much for this... Had mine fixed in a jiffy...

so far so good! before the fix my captivate had sound maybe 5% of the time. hasn't cut out yet since loosening that pesky screw!
thanks!
For those of you who do not have warranty or insurance, there is a fix for this.
I just got done with re assembling the phone after a fix I performed. It is real easy to do.
Things you need:
-A screwdriver (whatever the size is when you open the back cover, the four screws you see, that size)
-A small flat head screwdriver if you have one (not necessary but would help)
-Patience and some common sense.
Ok, to start off follow these steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022 to open the first 6 screws and then how to pop open the screen from the bezel(this is when a flat head screwdriver would be useful).
(go just to the step till the fifth picture in that thread, no need to go beyond that opening things!)
Now, you would see a screw on the left of the speaker. Now, other threads said that by loosening that screw the speaker would work. But, I did that and still had issues so I opened the phone like 4 times in total before I found out what it was. Now, notice that the speaker unit has a cable (orange colored) running into the main phone chip. It is connected there through which it functions. When you open that above mentioned thread to open the phone there is a picture showing to remove the that belt from the board. Follow that instructions, flip that tiny black clip up to remove the belt. In some cases there might be a blue sticker kind of thing on the belt, just take off that sticker. The problem seems that the belt is loosing contact which doesn't allow the speaker to get the sound input to put out sound through the speaker. So, take off the belt by flipping that switch and re insert it out there. Try to push it in properly or enough to align a white line on the belt and the chip. There is a white line to guide us there. That line should be totally straight when the belt is inserted appropriately. And now, flip that clip down and lock it. If you have loosened the screw left to the speaker, put it back in in normal force not excessive(no need to be more gentle here). You cannot leave it loose because it makes the whole unit move when it is loose eventually pulling off the belt from its place which causes the sound cut outs. The whole trick is to get the belt right in its place. So, make sure it is tight but not extra tight after you have managed to get the belt right. Put everything back together and now when you screw the last 6 screws again, the one in the top speaker corner affects the speaker unit, so don't push it too hard in. Just normal screwing. The rest should be done properly with normal force. This should solve it. I figured this out after opening the phone 4 times. And now playing songs since the past 6 hours non stop and its back in action again!
For all this, i did put in the battery and start the phone when I had opened it and tried messing around and figured out what was killing the sound, so this should be the ultimate solution to it. There is nothing else that can be affecting it now.
Most people must had faced this because they dropped their phones before which made the belt to move and hence the loose contacts inside. If not then, there are high chances that you bought it from someone or somewhere who had dropped it before!
Well that's it! Also, don't freak out in having to open the phone. You should just go to the step till the fifth picture. Which is very easily achievable!
Go, have fun with your WORKING speakers now!
I tried to open my Cappy but failed a unscrewing the middle screws...they are soo tight
My problem is that the ribbon cable between the speaker and the board is too short. No way to line that white stripe up. Got it in there as best I could and so far so good
I'm just guessing... but I would think that because this could possibly void a warranty is the only reason they don't make this a sticky, but it really should be...nice find and much appreciated. It is a common and very annoying problem and this fix really does seem to work!

Rear Speaker Fix - Thanks for the advice!
Just successfully disassembled my wife's phone without busting it into 1 million pieces. I loosened that screw next to the speaker, tightened just until i felt it start to grab, backed it off 1/16th of a turn, and the speaker works now. Great job on hunting down that video.
-Word of advice, The screw your loosening on the speaker housing is also the screw that holds the motherboard secure. I would recommend not removing the screw. The Captivate may self destruct if you do so.
10 out of 10 HERE! THUMBS UP!
Thanks.

worked for me
So I attempted this fix, considering I had no sound from the speaker at all.
I managed to somehow break the black connector flap that holds the ribbon cable in off of the connector. Now the speaker has no connection whatsoever, and now I don't have the vibrate function as well. (The speaker and vibrating motor are in the same assembly.)
Just a word to the wise. (I think I had actually broken my speaker, because I could get no sound at all, even before I broke the connector.)

Replacement GPS antennas/Flash covers?

I'm asking this because my GPS is frankly awful and I accidentally broke the GPS cover by melting it when solder was being put on the existing contacts.
Does anyone know where to get the Inspire 4G GPS covers? The Desire HD ones are nearly identical, but they lack the hole for the noise canceling microphone.
When the Inspire first came out there were issues with the covers and HTC was shipping them out for free. Do a search in the forum. Contact HTC and tell them your covers are trashed.
I have no experience with this supplier...

Those are different. The cover I'm looking for is where the LED flash is. You have to pop it out with a tool reaching into the battery compartment.
I bought a set of the 3 covers on the phone, hopefully the GPS cover is the right one and has the hole for a noise-cancelling mic.

I'm frankly not even sure if the Desire HD variant of the GPS cover is made in such a way that permits this to be done.
Just did some looking around and some experimentation. I think this is going to be the best course of action for an OEM-looking hole:
1. Find a paper clip that will cleanly go through the existing noise canceling hole. It shouldn't be too thin, but just about right.
2. Straighten out the paperclip so you get a nice straight section to work with.
3. Get a lighter or a gas stove and heat up the paper clip for a few seconds to get the straight section heated up enough to let you punch through the plastic without melting it completely.
4. There's a hole in the clear plastic where the LED flash connects to the black plastic, where the Inspire has a hole that goes cleanly through for it's noise canceling mic. Try to drive the paper clip wire clear through the hole, and make it straight. Hopefully there's enough heat for you to get a clean, smooth hole that looks like OEM.
I've taken a look at the dremel tools I have, and they are all definitely way too big for making a hole like this.

ear piece stopped working after digitizer swap

Hey all looking for help. I cracked my screen and got a replacement screen/digitizer/frame and successfully switched everything to the new chassis. Everything works except for the ear piece. Any tips to getting it to work?

Make sure that the contacts are lined up right to the motherboard, and make sure those contacts are clean
Thanks! I ordered a replacement anyway it was $9 on amazon. I accidently touched the ear piece with a magnetic screwdriver when I was trying to get screws. Would that fry the ear speaker? There's only one way the ear piece can possibly go that's why I'm confused about why its not working
Take a look at your old chassis where the old ear piece was there should be a little plastic seat that boosts it up closer to the contacts. You have to transfer that with the earpiece to your new chassis.
This might be a necropost but I figured it might help someone else who is googling with this problem.
It helped me. Thank you for posting!

Can you order that part as a replacement? I think I got rod of my old chassis before I realized I needed the piece underneath the earpiece.

[Q] After replacing the screen, earpiece grill is not working

Hi there,
I replaced my broken screen with a screen+frame which has the grill on the screen. However, after replacement, I can not hear any sound when somebody calls me. I need to use the speaker or the earphones to talk to somebody, pretty annoying. Do you have any idea what I did wrong or missing?
Thanks.

Did the speaker grill have any coating or covering on the inside? Perhaps you either disconnected or tore a ribbon cable that was connected to the speaker (if there was one)? I had similar issues with my screen replacement, but had issues with no cellular signal. I'm going to have to take mine apart again to investigate. I would suggest the same for you...

Hey, I had the same problem when I first replaced. The solution is easy. I forgot to plug in one of the cables which apparently increases the cellular signal. See the pictures attached.
I can not open the grill, for the sake of not opening the screen from the frame I bought the screen with frame and grill. So this defeats whole purpose.
Anybody has any idea about it? Is there a special connection for earpiece speaker?
Are you sure you have the ear speaker installed ? I don't think you have to open the screen to change the speaker.
In step 19 in the iFixit guide they remove the speaker BEFORE they remove the screen.
By the way where did you ordered the screen + mid frame? How is the rest of the quality ?

Hey Thanks for this. I installed it as well but still not working, interesting. I'm going to reopen try to fit it again.
I bought it from here: aliexpress.com/snapshot/6480736262.html?orderId=65692759745232 - DHL sent me the item in less than one week.
There is also alternative: vifocal.com/lcd-display-digitizer-replacement-with-middle-frame-for-oneplus-one-64gb-16gb.html
Quality is ok, I had ghost swipes before. It's not happening any more. Maybe because of software fixes (I'm on CM12 nightly, Lollipop). Apart from that, the colors are a lil bit washed out. I got used to anyways Sometimes under bright light (outdoors afternoon), greens look so weird. Overall I'm satisfied because I dropped the phone a lot in the past and mid frame was full of scratches. Now I have new mid frame.
Here they said the ear speaker is extremely fragile so i think it's
possible you broke it.
How is the speaker connected anyway ? I diddn't find any connector in the teardown.

But contact the seller that you didn't get an original one. You can get a refund. And write him a bad critic on aliexpress that it is not original so he can't trick more people.

it might not be the original one but it saved me from the time without any phones. I gave him a good rating etc. Asking for refund would be unfair in my opinion.
Yes I also saw that xda recommendation, maybe I broke it I don't know. WIll give it a try tonite. Ordered an earpiece speaker just in case from the aliexpress for 6 bucks, but i'm sure it will take at least 1 month to arrive.

Question Mekede/Navifly HeadUnits. What's in the box?! (UNIVERSAL MODEL 7682)

Hey,
I tried asking the seller this (official Mekede store), but I don't think they understood my question well and never responded to me after the first time.
I need to know what exactly the universal model comes with... It's loads cheaper outright and cuts the shipping price in half since they won't need to ship a huge trim piece along with it.
I already ordered a PAC CAN interface, so I don't believe I would need theirs. (Unless it's the only one that will interface with the built in software?)
I'm not sure if it even comes with a harness at all. That's fine if it doesn't.. I can order their universal power harness along with the unit.
However the universal power harness doesn't have the 3.5mm jack/plug that the PAC sends it's SWC commands through. So I don't know how that would work.
As far as the mounting and trim piece go...Does it at least come with a universal type bracket (s) to screw into the side of the case, and then screw into the dash mounts?
If it doesn't, I can fab something up, but I'd like to know what I'm working with.
The trim piece/bezel, I just plan to take a rotary tool and steady hand to my factory piece. Their trim piece would require me to cut it up anyway since it doesn't fully match my vehicle (theirs is Chrysler, and mine is dodge)
I hope these come off as coherent questions. Anyone, please, let me know.. what comes with in the box, and how will I interface to the SWC?
I think I answered one of my questions. The steering wheel control on the adapter is just two wires going into a headphone plug/jack (can't remember which)
I can just cut the connector off, or sacrifice/buy and old female/male connector to connect to the wiring harness from the radio.
I ordered the unit, so I'll find out in a few weeks the answers to the rest of my questions
Follow up.
I got the package. A little underwhelmed. I thought I was ordering a Mekede M600, but got the M500 instead. Whatever. It was only $220 before taxes and shipping.
It took them a week to actually get it into dhls hands. After that, it only took DHL 3 days to get it to me from China. Fairly impressed at that.
The contents are exactly what's pictured in the ad, nothing more. Only the wires to plug in the back. I ordered the "universal ISO" harness along with the unit, otherwise it may not have come with anything. That was $1.50 I think.
That's okay. I've got a PAC Audio can interface in plan to connect it to, so the standard 15 wire plug should suffice.
The unit is not actually a double din chassis. I was hoping a little too hard on that. I guess I let the pictures fool me.
Whatever. I've gotta work with what I've got. No turning back now.
A bit disappointed that they don't even include the screws that go into the back of the unit that are needed to mount it to a bracket. I'll have to figure out what size those are at some point soon.
I haven't even tried to power it on yet.
The unit did come with a plastic "screen protector" on it. Not really meant to be a protector, but the typical plastic you'll find covering new screens. It has a tab on the side to pull it off. You know what I'm talking about.
Good thing it has it, because it came out of the box scratched up. Hopefully the screen itself isn't scratched.
I spent the last few hours pondering on how I'm going to mount it up and how I'm going to fit it into my factory bezel. Do I want it flush mounted or do I take the easy way out?
IDK but I'm thinking flush mount.
I asked the seller for any kind of blueprint or CAD drawing of the back of the radio with the mounting holes. I'm sure they'll totally understand my request and definitely send that right over
I'm the meantime, while I'm holding my breath for that response, I went ahead and hastily drew it up.
I crudely reverse engineered the back of the radio with a tape measure and calipers. Then I measured my opening in the vehicle and got that hole placement in the cold dark with a tape measure . I'm sure my first prototype won't exactly be perfect, but hopefully i can work with it.
I'll cut it on the laser tomorrow and see how where I can go from there
Hi, just to say as a noob I found this helpful and interesting, if you can update on how it's going that would be great
Anything you want to know, just ask
This it the unit installed.
I made a custom bracket and then had to make a custom "frame" to clamp onto the cars trim piece so that I could route out the opening with a Dremel and carbide bit
That's my journey. I ended up with 3 more revisions of the mounting bracket.
Had to shrink the length down a little because it fit too tightly ... Added a notch at the top so the connector for the hazard lights would clear.
Also I reverse engineered the face of the radio and the bolt pattern on the back with some calipers and a tape measure. The seller wasn't about to give me cad or dimensions
