Auto-delete emails?

Hello Everyone,
I have a T-Mobile USA SDA and had a problem with emails on the device.
Not sure if it is working as designed or if there was a blug, so I thought I would float it by you guys.
Setup:
Mail client on T-Mobile USA SDA
Configured manually to check pop and send smtp with my gmail account. It is set such that the message headers are downloaded first.
I connect WIFI and send/recieve
I receive a header I had sent myself for testing
I click on it and select to download the message body.
I go back to the inbox.
I do send and receive.
I receive the message body.
I read it.
I go back to the inbox.
I do send and recieve.
Result:
The message is removed without a trace. it is not put into deleted items folder, nor does it remain in the inbox folder.
Is this expected behavior? I am not allowed to store mail on my device? Is there a registry setting to change this behavior? There is no options within the application. Is there a registry setting to change wheremails are stored in general? thanks for seeing the barrage of questions!

Yes I got the same result with you. Mine is a Dopod 577w (Tornado in Taiwan). This behaviour also happens to other mail servers.

I had searched a bit about it and found some places explain it. The explanation sounds weak, but it looks like something we will have to live with until either gmail or ms changes their server or client software.

The problem is with the default behaviour of Gmail - it will "hide" all the
already-downloaded mail. Unfortunately, it seems not even now that the beta
phase is long over can you effectively override this behaviour - the POP3

Does it only display mail that is still on the server? : one of the most-criticized problems with Messaging is that it does not show older messages (messages that have been deleted in the meantime) in the Inbox unless you explicitly (mass-)move them to a separate folder. As can be seen, it's, in addition to Messaging, only nPOPw that deletes the messages from the local view that don't exist on the server any more. The other mailer applications don't.
I might just write a pop/smtp client software myself. Much easier to tweak it to do what I need it to do, and in my previous job I worked for an email client so I know those protocols well. I probably won't add advanced functionality or IMAP/Exchange, because I have no individual use for those.

My current solution to this issue is Outlook & ActiveSync. Just download your mail to PC and sync. Mail in mobile Outlook account will not disappear unless you delete them.
By the way, I think Gmail mobile website is also okay for mail browsing & composing.

Gmail Notifier for WM5/PPC

Hey everyone...
Just wondering if anyone had come up with a Gmail Notifier type program (or an acceptable workaround) for the Today page. Specifically, I am looking for the following features:
1. Checks your Gmail account every X minutes and notifies you on the Today page if you have new unread mail.
2. Does NOT download the headers (see #3).
3. If you check/read your email on your home computer, the next time your WM/PPC device checks for new messages, it will clear the 'unread mail' alert as those messages are no longer unread.
4. Uses data connection, not SMS.
Item #3 is the biggie for me. I use multiple PCs/devices (work desktop, work laptop, home desktop, home laptop, 8525/Hermes) and therefore want to manage all my mail via my browser since it will always be consistent no matter which machine I'm using. I do NOT want to have to clear/delete headers off my mobile device after I have already read the mail using one of my PCs.
I just want a flag to show on the Today page if I have currently unread mail sitting in my Gmail box and to go away when I don't... no matter which machine checks/reads the message(s).
Even better would be if it supported multiple Gmail accounts and Gmail for Domains.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

This would be a great thing if it could be accomplished. I can write something like that in Linux using PHP, and then port it to Windows, but there's no way I could get close to doing something like that for the mobile, you're prolly better off using the GMail client from gmail.com/m and just setting it to download headers only, not the body, since it's just a simplified interface to the website for the phone. I used it on my SE w810i for a while because I was out of the house for over 20 hours one day and wanted to check my mail. (GPRS/EDGE data connection for the win.)

Finally, someone has taken this project on! Egil has developed a gmail notifier for Windows Mobile. I've been using it for about a week now. Works well. It is still a work in progress.
Its nice not to have to delete the headers I was downloading via POP3.

Good news! Gmail is going to support IMAP.
So reading a message on your PocketPC will change the status to read on the server.

It will be interesting to see if using IMAP through Pocket Outlook will work any better/easier.
Just waiting for IMAP to be enabled on my account so I can compare.

Did you get a today screen plug-in to appear?
Did you install ".NET Compact Framework 2.0"?

I still like SMS for email notification because it does not drain the battery and is true push. The problem: SMS is usually not free. The solution: peekamo, the only SMS service free on both receiving and sending.
On one of my servers, I run a Perl script to check gmail via atom feeds and then send a SMS to my phone via peekamo. Works like a charm, love it.

Installed on WM 6.1 which includes .net CF 2.0. Today plugin seems to only work when run from \program files\ (tried \extendedrom\program files\ to no avail).
Nice little app - worth a look if you aren't totally enamored with pocket outlook...

Best email, contact & calendar provider online for PocketPC users ?

Hello,
I am a PocketPC user, and I want to completely reorganize the way I am using my private emails, contact & calendar !
I would like to manipulate my data (email, contact & calendar), on the PocketPC AND online on the Web.
Which solution email/contact/calendar solution do you recommend me ?
I have listed these solutions (do you know other possibilities ?):
- Google and Zoho PIM suite: The good, it is online and free. The bad is that there is no way to sync them with the PocketPC.
- Microsoft Exchange: The good, it is on the Pocket PC. The bad, it is costs money.

I use Yahoo. Sync device with Outlook; Outlook and device always the same. Outlook syncs with Yahoo contacts, calendar, etc via Intellisync. So I have a nice backup of everything on Yahoo, can still access things on Yahoo mobile or Yahoo full web.
Outlook on Desktop.
pOutlook on Device.
Yahoo Intellisync to sync Yahoo and Outlook.
Sync Device to Outlook, Outlook to Yahoo.
However this takes mental energy to remember which will be the home to the 'correct' info. So if you edit things in Yahoo, on your phone and in Outlook without first syncing everythign, you can run into issues.
I recently moved to a Service Desk software for my business. It is a served application and I just go to the WWW address to get all the info. Interent dependent though...and web browsing is slow when under the gun...

I also know that if you use the Yahoo mobile plugin system that you pretty much just work from within that shell. Its good for some. I guess it is called Y! Go. I had it on my 8125 and it worked well, a bit slow on the 8125.

I didn't know about this Yahoo sync system. I will have a look at it.
If I understand your feedback, what you are missing is: the need to sync your contacts/calendar directly online from your PocketPC. That's right ?
I do agree with you, the best solution would be to be able to sync online all your applications, that ís the application on the PocketPC (POutlook) and the application on the PC (Outlook).
As far as I know, only Microsoft Exchange is offering this possibility. But it costs quite a lot..

Google Apps and mail2web
I really like googlemail, and actually use google apps for domains to manage a couple of domain names. I've set up Outlook using IMAP to connect to these accounts but do not schedule mail download. This allows me to easily send emails from my account.
I've then set up mail forwarding within googlemail to a free mail2web account, that is in effect Exchange. This is set up as a push account within Outlook(works really well). Within googlemail I have a rule setup to archive mails once they are forwarded, this gives me a clean inbox should I wish to bring up the IMAP connection to view archived mail.

Could anyone using MS Exchange, give a feedback about this solution ?
Nick, why don't you just use your MS Exchange account (mail2web) ? it seems to me that you don't need to have a gmail account.

With Mail2web I can only reply and send mails as [email protected]
If I want to send an email from my own domain I need to do it through my Google Apps for Domains setup.
If mail2web could handle personal domains it would be fine. Google do a really good job of this with regard to MX records and reverse dns lookups.

Hosted Exchange would be a nice solution: admitted it costs a few euros per month (6 here) but you get a mailbox which WinMo directly syncs with (without any dirty hacks, plugins and stuff) plus a quite nice webmail/calendaring/collaboration environment (Outlook Web Access).

According to your post, it seems that MS Exchange is actually the only "clean" (=acceptable) way to have the possibility to have your email/contact/calendar on your PocketPC and online.
So, I definitely need to have a look at the offers to see how much it is. Do you know a comparison table of the different companies offering Exchange hosting ?
Nick, i understand now why you still use Google. I do think you can use your own domain with Exchange thought. Maybe not with mail2web.com , but other competitors probably offer this.
How much do you pay for your hosted Exchange ?

Mail2web is free!! You may as well sign-up just to see how Push/Active Sync works.
So 95% of the benefits of Exchange (active sync, Outlook Web access etc.) but just no domain hosting. I don't have that many mails that I need to reply to from my domain when I am out and about, so it's really not that big a deal for me to quickly switch accounts when I need to. I'm sure I could get hosted Exchange including a domain or two, but I'd expect it would be between £50 and £100 pounds a year, and wouldn't really give me that much benefit.
But the benefit of having push email is great. ActiveSync does seem to occassional have trouble connecting if my connection type changes through the day. Eg, I connect via WIFI at home, then in the car the phone will pick up 3G, thn by the time I'm at work I'm down to GPRS, at some locations in work I can pick up WIFI again and then for the return journey etc. It can be fixed be manually synchronising to get things running again, but that does kind of defeats the object of push email.
Another alternative is to run your own mail server. It doesn't have to be MS Exchange, there are other that are compatible. But this seems a little like too much hard work without much benefit.

Don't forget that you can use Google with any domain by using Google Apps.
They currently handle MX records for my Domain.

Yeah, Google apps is great, and would be perfect for me if it could handle push email. IMAP isn't the end of the World, just not as slick.
Google apps is my primary mail handler. In effect all mail2web is doing for me is adding push capability

I used 4smartphone.net hosted Exchange and before that I'd been using Intellisync for over-the-air sync with Lotus Domino. Intellisync solution was a good one as it provided rather comprehensive sync options. However, I'd been using it few years ago, so I don't really know whether this solution is still available (looks like Nokia had bought Intellisync).
Exchange solution is great for its native support, but lacks few features (like separate folders support and OTA sync for notes).
I think that hosted Exchange 2007 is the preferred option.

I have my personal domain stuza.com pointing to my mail2web.com account and I love it. Works superbly. I can edit calender/contacts and it changes automaticaly on the mail2web server. Also saves a bucketload of time should you decide to flash your phone - you simply give it your email address and it goes away and autoconfigures the exchange settings and then pulls all your contacts/schedule data down. All my mail comes into [email protected] and goes out from [email protected] .... frickin sweet.
I will never live again without an exchange solution.

Has anybody tried funambol.com? It is an open source project that I recently found. I haven't tested it with the exception of email but it does have contacts and calendar components. I hope it works for you!

windows live mail works just like exchange, syncing calendar, mail, contacts...etc
Push mail works easily and without any setup. Usually it comes with wm6 phones, but you can also install the cab found on the forum.

Okay my age is probably getting in the way, but don't you have to use Outlook to synch calendar? Has there been an upgrade to Windows Live Mail or something else I may be missing?

Further on funambol.com and to the original poster's request. Funambol has it's own web site that will serve to pull/push email and contacts with GMail. I don't use the calendar on Gmail so I can not address that but Funambol provides you a myfunambol web page that will consolidate your email/contacts as well as any calendar/tasks/notes/briefcase on your PPC. So, in effect, you can go to your myfunambol page and see your email, contacts, calendar, etc. all in one place on the web as well as on your PPC. Funambol provides flexibility as to what it actually synchs so you remain in control. While you can schedule your synch times, it also has the option of synching on a 'push' basis. I will admit that this capability is not necessarily perfect at this point but it is clearly being worked on.
This is a great solution for me as I do not use Outlook (too cheap to buy) or Internet Explorer on my PC. I use Thunderbird/Lightning and Firefox. There is a Funambol plugin for Thunderbird that works well.
NOTE: I have no affiliation with Funambol other than as a user of this one product.

Why does Yahoo Imap work on wm6.1 but not on my desktop Outlook?

My Fuze auto configures for yahoo and goes to a imap.mail.yahoo.com server, it works like an IMAP champ.
I then configure my Outlook for the same settings and I keep getting the UserName/Password entry box. I know I have the settings the same as the phone and the correct username/password.
Any tips? Imap for my Yahoo would be awesome on Outlook.

I am kind of answering my own question here. Looks like Imap Yahoo has a way to verify an id of the device type before it allows connection. So apparently wm6.1 mail app sends what it needs to Yahoo Imap Mobile but Outlook does not.

Damn, I was looking at doing that as well. I hope they open it up!

Thanks for the reply. From what I understand, Yahoo servers require a specific, but non-standard IMAP command to be sent before login is done. The command is: “ID ("GUID" "1")”. Rumor is that its easy to modify the client to send it. Mutt and Mozilla Thunderbird already have a modded version. Furthermore, YPOPSs! and FreePOPs also use this command.
Can anyone provide some insight as to how we would go about modifying the connection string Outlook uses?
I guess this would be similar to configuring your browser to present itself as a different client - something that is very easily done.

Actually Yahoo IMAP does not recognize ur phone/pc..
If u want it to use on pc pl make sure that u selected download only headers option then only it wroks

This is NOT true. I have tried downloading only headers and still the same problem: On the PC Outlook fails to connect correctly to the IMAP server due to the problem described on the page I have linked to above.
With mobile Outlook on the phone downloading headers as well as content via IMAP works perfectly.

I agree with Jean Luc. When using a mobile device to access the Yahoo IMAP server, any and all options work as they should. However, when using Outlook via non-mobile computer, it doesn't work.
Clearly Yahoo has implemented a filter on the connection string Outlook is sending to prevent users from using IMAP. I believe the fix should be relatively easy. Can anyone provide some insight on this?

Just happened to be searching more generally for this myself today for my desktop Outlook having got used to IMAP on my WM6.5.3 Energy ROM and wanting better that 'leave mail for x days' POP3 options (Specifically I want my desktop sent items to sync up to Yahoo mail like then do when sending from my phone so in and out boxes are all in 1 place)
Found this MS Technical info page that seems to give all the info needed on how to get Outlook to send custom properties, it's just I don't have enough knowledge of RegEditing to get this right ;(

That suggests you can edit your CurrentUser registry values to permanently send pre values as part of each recieve something along:

???
Although I presume that the {000...00046} GUID is Machine or User specific and that's the bit I'm not sure what to set for my install, think I worked out the other bits.
Anyone with better Windows Registry knowledge able to help out?

Found working Yahoo IMAP 'incoming' proxy
In my continued searches I came across the following IMAP proxy which acts between Outlook and Yahoo to insert the necessary GUID 1 string as part of it's call to Yahoo's server, and would do that same for any other IMAP capable client at http://www.ameir.net/blog/archives/43-Yahoo!-Mail-IMAP-Proxy.html
Using the Windows download of this tool on Windows 7 with Outlook 2003 (Odd combination I know!) I was able to get Yahoo IMAP email and all folders to appear within Outlook where I thought I was onto a real winner!
Unfortunately it looks like either the proxy or my setup didn't fully support 2 way IMAP as I wasn't able to drag any local email up into the IMAP account as I should have been able to do.
It did however allow me to pull down server copies of Sent items from both Yahoo Webmail 'Sent' and WM Device 'Sent Items' folders and just drag and drop them into my normal Outlook default Sent Items so those were all together again.
Setup was pretty simple for what I got working:
1) Download and unzip the file in the Windows archive from that page above
2) Run the .exe included with those extracted files to open a DOS window running the proxy
3) In Outlook configure a new IMAP email account but set incoming IMAP to 'localhost' then in advanced settings make sure incoming port is 3490. Setup all other fields as you'd normally expect and with Yahoo normal SMTP server address.
4) Outlook will add a new tree for that account in left hand 'Mail Folders' view, just click around and explore. If no sub folders appear right click on root and choose 'Update Folders'
Hope that helps someone, and as code for this proxy is open source maybe someone could work out how to embed this customisation direct within Outlook so IMAP should then work fully 2 way?
Will keep my fingers crossed someone with suitable skills sees this thread as would really like to move into an IMAP world now I know how much better than POP3 it is!!!

Hi everybody.
I juste want to say that I'm not able to find a mail client for my HTC.
There is almoust no competitors on this market :
Built-in app : no backup. each hard reset = reconfigure every account
FlexMail : too slow
Profimail : not that easy to configure
QMail : Old
and that's alll.
Does someone here can tell me if there is somewhere a valuable mail client for windows mobile ?

Hmmm .... how did you manage to miss www.mail2web.com? With these you can use the built-in Outlook and it works a treat.
They are not free but they are cheap and its a full Exchange client (if you wish it to be). I use them through my own domain and think they are excellent. My sent mails even get sent out as *@stuza.com.
And as I access them through my own domain (*.stuza.com) i can even get to its web front end through many restricted corporate firewalls!

I'm afraid not to have completly undersood you ...
I know Mail2web, I used to use it as a web client when I couldn't use Pocket Outlook in my phone (because no pop or imap data plan).
Now, I can use my multiple imap account in whatever mail client (built in pocket outlook, flexmail, etc.).
But I often Hard reset or flash my rom, and the Poicket outlook doesn't allow a simple settings export : each time, I have to configure my 5 accounts and its tedious.
The other ones allow a setting export, but they are tedious to USE.
so, I wonder why there is not other mail client : I think the market is here ; isn't it?
ps : sorry for my english, I'm french ;-)

Pocket Outlook is built into ALL WinMob devices afaik.

If you need to re-enter all your details every time you reboot then it sounds like you have a more serious issue that someone else might be able to help you with?

BUT : when I do a Hard Reset, my 5 accounts are no more here, an that's normal : I have done a Hard Reset.
In FlexMail, for exemple, I can easilly recall my settings because there is a backup solution. I just have to reinstall FlexMail, end recover all my 5 accounts without a tedious stylus manual configuration for each.
In the buit-in Pocket Outlook, Ihave to re-configure each account manually. That's why I'd prefer to use a third party app, or find a way to backup my mail account.
I dont see the interest of use mail2web as I can access my mails without ... Bt perhaps I miss someting ?

Thats the real problem here. If this didn't happen I suspect you would be happy with Outlook. It might be better to start a new thread or change the tittle of this one to "Reboot wipes mail settings" and hopefully someone can help you fix this?

Why QMAIL3 (last release May 13 2009) is old ?

i was just thinking about this same thing the other day.... there are replacements for just about every aspect of the phone... explorer, browser, multimedia, contact management, but mail is the least touched... i was thinking i would prefer a more finger friendly version would be nice... something along the lines of icontact for email

Can somebody just send an email to MS to request them to add the 'export settings' feature on poutlook. I think it's the best solution say that in the future release of WM65 this become a 'build-in' function. And, seems much easier for them to do it, I just remember eversince the earliest 'outlook express', MS has this feature built-in their desktop mail client.
I'm just afraid of my English not good enough to express this in a convincible way to those guys in MS.
Update: I just have sent the link of this page to MS Outlook Mobile Team, Hope they can pay some attention to this 'customer feedback'.
