Hi - I'm a newbie toi the XDA2s & am quite impressed so far but...
Out the box with no card in the slot, it shows a storage card of 43Mb :!: , I assume this is a "virtual" card.
I have bought a 128Mb SD card (Kodak brand) and I can not get my XDA to recognise it at all  - it stubbornly insists I have a 43Mb storage card, but when I hit "settings->about" the display correctly shows that the expansion slot is either "in use" or "Not in use" :?: :!: its just not able to use the memory on the card
I have tried the card in a card-reader attached to a PC and it looks fine, so what is going on?
My OS is Win Mobile 2003 2nd edition version 4.21.1088 (build 14132) and ROM version in 1.31.00WWE date 12/13/04
Hi,
Try (re)formatting in your PC and see if that helps. For 128Mb you probably want FAT16 filesystem with 2Kb clusters. Technically 128Mb is supposed to be 4Kb clusters, but since these things are always slightly smaller than they're supposed to be I'd try 2Kb and see how you go.
You can do this from MS-DOS with:
C:\> format X: /FS:FAT /A:2048
At least that should work (Change X: for the drive letter of the card!)
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the suggestion,
I tried it, but still no luck.
You could also try the "Storage Tools" located at:
http://www.softwinter.com/storagetools.html
You can download for free and although I don't know the limitations are of that version, I know you can format with it, as that's what I did (and all I did).
So hopefully you could format your SD card from their program for the Pocket PC. Just make sure you install the application into main memory since it can't format it if something's using it (although since you can't use the SD card I don't really suppose that'd be a problem!)
I had downloaded pocket mechanic which has a format utility, but this did not help
My issue is Where is this 43Mb card coming from? It is visible and useable whether or not I load my 128Mb SD card. Is there some way of disabling the SDIO port? This may be the problem

quick update:
I've figured out that the 43Mb Storage device must be onboard flash or similar and I have successfully used a 128Mb MMC card 1st time no problem, so the problem is either my SD Card, or my SDIO slot
I have heard that some SD cards are not recognised by PDAs, but the card I am using is happy in my PC. I hope its not the slot
I'm going to try a different SD card (when I can find one to borrow) and I'll post the results.[/u]
OK, so I tried another SD card and it still wasn't recognised; ergo, I have a problem with either the SD Slot, or esle a software config problem
Does anybody have any ideas where I might look to see if I have a software issue?
Thanks
Chris
I think you're looking at the storage folder - not the storage card. The folder is 43mb. If you're looking in system > memory, then change the drop down box from 'storage' to 'storage card'. You should then be able to view the card memory.
Have you tried saving anything in it via file explorer?
JD
Hi JD, thanks for the reply;
I'd figured that bit out once I'd tried using an MMC card. I've renamed the mount point for MMC & SD cards and I can definitely say that MMC cards are fine, but SD cards are simply not recognized at all
I'm wondering whether I have a hardware problem i.e. broken SD slot, or whether there's something that I can look at with Windows i.e. a software config issue
Odd. SD and MMC are interchangeable, although I think MMC cards are slightly thicker.
Possily it makes contact with the card slot contacts when SD cards won't. Which would mean the slot is faulty.
Oh drat I suspected as much, but I thought I'd ask
I'm tempted just to ignore the problem and use MMC cards beacuse I don't want to return my new shiny toy
Thanks
Chris
If it's faulty, I uppose it's possible it will stop reading MMC as well at some stage, If it's stil under guarantee, I'd take it back.

Click to collapse
SD cards are thicker than MMC, not vice versa.
Oh. That makes it harder to see why a faulty slot shouldn't be able to read an SD card.
I can't see any other answer though.
hi!!
can anyone help me with my sd card problem??
my mda cant read it...
when it starts it recognizes it and asks if i want to format it and of course i say yes and that is it...
it says it is formated but cant recognize it..
what should i do???
Hi,
I also have the same problem with my MDA Compact and 2gb sandisk ultra II.
So if somebody could please provide help, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
I've had the same prob with an 2Gb MMC, and i fix it by unscreawing a bit the top 2 screws of the mainboard (have to open the upper back part). The ideea is to push the card slot backword, until it reads the card correctly, anddoing this with the battery cover on place, to be able to power on your device after uncreawing a bit, to test the rezult. By doing this I fixt also some reading problemsa that i had with other card (when paying movies from the card, it would freez the move until I would pull out the card and put it back again). Hope to be of help.
Try not to use a fast SD card , I still have one 133x can't be use with the same problem , I am using a 40x 2G SD card , work great
hello everyone, i just got my HTC Mogul (Sprint PPC-6800) and i love the device, except for the memory card i have is corrupt and i cant format it. any file i put on there, program, music, anything gets corrupted and wont work. I cant delete the my documents folder that is the only file on there and is what i believe is causing the corruption, does anyone know how to fix this?
Try formatting it on your pc?
Like he said, you might have to use a media card reader on the pc side to format it.
I tried that and it doesnt work on the PC, it says Windows cannot format the device. Any other way to do it?
put it in a camera? do you have an adaptor?
Might be time to go back to the store
SD Card Failure on Sprint Mogul
I'm sorry you've run into the same problem I have.. Its the micro SD card that has failed. You may be able to get a little longer use from it doing what I did but ultimately you need a new micro SD card.
I got one of the cheap chinese MP4/MP5 players that use SD cards and used an SD card reader with my micro SD card in it..
If you don't use this your PC will refuse to have anything to do with your micro SD card.
I formatted the disc with the player and then used my laptop to format it again to FAT32 at least 16 sectors. This woke the micro SD card, it still has I/O errors and it misbehaves a lot but its at last usable and its 2GB can retain 800MB. It will hold until I get a new card...
The moral is to save your backups to your PC so you can buy a new card and restore to it..
does anyone have the layout of components on SD cards
I work for a pda repair centre and I'm having a play around trying to recover a customers dead mini sd card but need to know where the caps have to sit on a Standard SD card
