I'm posting this at the risk of being blasted on my searching techniques. I've been searching for what seems like hours and with the wikis down, I've reached the end of my rope. Lurking on this site is what lead me to purchase my Tilt in the first place and I'm hoping that the wise and learned posters on this forum can help me out of my predicament.
My usb port stopped working so AT&T quickly sent me a new (refurbished) unit. I studied sirsycho's thread on reverting my old Kaiser back to it's warranty-friendly state, but I have one problem, no usb port. Now I go to vip_snoopy's thread involving flashing from a microSD card. Very cool. Herein lies the dilemma, I need the .nbh file to install the factory rom by way of microSD flash and all I can find is the .exe installer.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm sure there's a more technical way to do this, but...
try just running the exe, and then snagging the .nbh file once it extracts it to install. It might be locked by the OS (or something similar), but it's worth a shot since no one else responded.
open exe with winrar (free to try) and extract the nbh.
now on with the blasting. u my friend need to learn to use the search button. damn newbs like u create so many unnessary threads. users like u need to be banned...FOEVA!!!
nahh, welcome to xda!
Thanks for the quick reply. The wikis (wiki's, wikies, wikii?) are up and running again, so I'm deep in my fruitless search pattern again.
I already had that idea, but have no idea how to implement it. I'm a hardware nerd. Whatever the software is doing is a mystery to me. I just know how to make it do whatever it's doing happen really fast. I know it extracts it somewhere temporarily, I just don't know where.
I'm also a pathetically slow typist, obviously.
depending on your windows version it will extract to different temp locations. for example windows xp would be
\document and settings\"your name"\local settings\temp
have this location open when your run the exe and see what new folder is created. copy the nbh out of the folder before canceling the install. good luck!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Been using WinRAR for years and had no idea I could do that. SUCCESS! You just helped me solve over three hours of hair pulling. Now, on to the endless hours of fun with the "make it like it was" game.

Hi - is there any way on PocketPC 2003 to disable access to Solitaire and Jawbreaker. I'm pretty sure I can't remove them all together as they're in the ROM - but some registry hack to prevent access to them would be sufficient.
Try this...
You don't list what device or WM versions you are using, but here are two possible solutions you could try:
1) Read through the forums specific to your device, and learn how to cook your own ROM, removing the offending software.
2) Any file in your ROM can be "overwritten" by syncing to your pc and draggin a file with the same name to the folder containing the file you wish to replace. IE. I have a small, written for the pda application, which when run, displays a pop-up saying "This software has been removed because I do not wish for anyone using this device to have fun doing so!" or similar. I then name it solitare.exe and drag it into the Windows directory from my PC. It asks me am I sure I wish to overwrite the file, I click yes and bam! the file is "replaced". (I believe what actually happens is the OS delinks the file and places the new file in the old ones placeholder on the filesystem, it is still in the ROM as that is unwritable unless flashing, but it is no longer accessable, which is what you want to happen.
tried & failed...
I've created a solitare.exe as you suggested and placed it in the Windows directory - it doesn't seem to get run when executed however - The original game still gets run - I fear I may be doing something stupid.

Hey pneuma.
2) Isn't working for me either. I thought gremlin was doing something wrong, but I just tried it myself, and, although my "fake" solitaire.exe (a renamed app) file is there, so is the original solitaire.exe. Tapping on the Solitaire icon under games runs the game as if nothing happened, although just opening the Games folder would tell you that it didn't work (the Solitaire icon is still the cards)
What did you do that we didn't? I'm using a Universal.
Peculiar...
Personally I haven't tried this specific to the games, but there was a nasty spash screen in the new WM5 for my Himalaya that I replaced in the method detailed above. It would appear however that solitaire might be a system program, as the following files:
\windows\solitaire.lnk
\windows\start menu\solitaire.lnk
have the following Target: ":MSSOLITAIRE"
but don't despair!
If you have resco explorer or some similar mobile based explorer replacement, try edit the links to point to the replacement exe, or even delete the links altogether, as well as the Games directory under "\windows\start menu\" (might not work deleting them though).
If the deletion or edits don't work you may well have to do the same trick, replacing these .lnk files with something else.
--Marc
Thanks to pneuma I think I've got a workable solution without having to hack into the ROM!
I've created two programs (using PocketBuilder) called Solitare.exe and Jawbreaker.exe which just pop up a response window saying "This Application Has Been Disabled"
I've also created two .lnk files - solitare.lnk and jawbreaker.lnk which contain:
22#"\Windows\Solitare.exe"
and
23#"\Windows\Jawbreaker.exe"
respectively
In my boot process I copy the executables and .lnk files to the \Windows directory and also copy the .lnk files to the
\Windows\Start Menu\Program\Games\
directory.
I don't think our users (sorry to diss them) are bright enough to figure out they have to remove all of these files to get the games working again.
Thanks for all your help.
Gremlin.

But you're dissing them all the way by treating them like this.
Why shouldn't they be able to play Solitair or JawBreaker every now and then during a coffee of lunch break. A bit of light releif never did anyone any harm.
I'm glad I don't work with you. (Bah Humbug)
I have no say in how the users are treated - I am merely a developer - I get told what needs to be done and I do it. I can offer my suggestions at design time but ultimately it is not my decision how the users are treated on the shop floor.

i want to have a program installed by default but i want all the program files to be places in \Program Files\

"why spend time learning when ignorance is instantanious?"
It defeats the object of having them in the ROM
as soon as you use initflashfiles to move a file it takes up room in the storage memory. make the lnk's link to the /windows/ dir instead

If you just cut straight to the last paragraph in the post above , he is right.
You are best trying to keep everything in \windows to prevent duplication of files as it copies rather than moves them over.
My fault i should have been more clear
I cant use the EXT-ROM as this program requires user input, so forget that idea.
now i have gotten the program to sit inside the \windows\ folder correctly but now i need 1 last step, i need to have a folder w/files inside transfered as well. Its a theme folder!
Example OEM folder:
program.exe
\Themes\
It copies the program and i use initflashfiles.txt to make a menu shortcut works fine ,but when building the ROM it freezes on the Theme folder. Ok so you cant have a folders w/subdir and files.
Now what should i do? i made OEM folder have all files inside but i need the themes folder to be XFER'd to \Windows\Themes\
or is there a solid command or a config file i can write to make adjustments to create/copy/move files and folders?

With my wisbar advance, i've got the theme on my sd card and I put the config.ini file with the settings in the oem. Hence WA in \windows, theme on sd card.
You cannot move things from rom to another directory, only copy them.

ever do a search on your post and read how arrogant you are? you should try it. If thats your example of helping someone... you need to rethink things.
To be honest i was hoping someone of your caliber would come here and offer help, but that doesn't mean you get to talk to people as you like because you ..." Know More "
Its expected that you know more when we post "[Help]" in the title. That's correct we EXPECT someone with more knowledge to help, not abuse people.
Thanks.... NO really thanks for the help

I did search for the how to copy a folder w/files using the initflashfiles.txt as was not able to find any information, hence the post.
Helmi has nothing to do with this so don't throw his name around. And midget has run to this issue with a few users on this forum lately. Yea i read those too.
And i don't care if he can breathe underwater, fact is just because you answer somebody doesnt mean you get to talk to people like trash.

gotcha ya, i was hoping for a way around this as the only other issue i have is a *.rgu file which set a string in the CURRENT_USER area but for some reason it fails to build on that specific RGU which is the registration for wisbar.
besides that everything is working smooth
here is a preview of the default look which i helped a great skinning artist (Dingo) make into a great wisbar skin, the new version has sounds that are awesome
here is a preview,

This is the point that, until I made a kitchen ROM, I wasn't aware of; did I (and 1wayjonny and others) miss it?
Ranting and raving at people that don't know what you do is not moving things forward, this isn't a simple, 'how I instal ROM?' (sic) question...
I've already done searches for this, but I just haven't found a simple answer for a newbie like me.
What I want is to keep the weather in the tab like it is on the stock HTC home, but I want to be able to choose my city by zip code. I'd also like to be able to get radar images.
Is there an easy way to do this?
Also, it would be really cool if there was an option to have it show weather based on your GPS location.
Thanks!
theres no "newbie" way...you have to get the file from your phone's "Windows" folder (using file explorer), get it on a real computer, and edit the file using notepad...just copy the format already there for your city, save it, and put it back where you found it in the windows folder...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319187
Once again, a person who isnt looking hard enough in the forums...

Hey thanks for the link.
But, what I would REALLY like, that I haven't seen posted yet, is instead of having to input a city is if the weather would just update based on GPS location. Is anyone working on this? Or is there currently an available modification to the HTC home weather for this? I think that would be the cat's ass.
Thanks again!

ive started cooking around a week and a half ago on my new rom series and im not understanding how to set up the auto customization that happids on a fresh flash or hard-reset ive researched for 2 days now and found formats and all that but can someone please explain what "config_operator.txt", config_PT.txt", "config_AP.txt" and "config.txt" do as they seem to be connected to each other and how to set them up with their corrisponing folders thank you!
~xNitrous~
okies first off make sure before you edit the config.txt file you set the properties to NOT read-only then edit the file as you like. put the cabs or .xmls you want in the rom into it and make sure they are signed and set to read only. then go back and save your config.txt and change the properties back to read-only. flash and be done. also search the hermes forum for answears about this since cooking for the hermes and kaiser are the same and there is TONS of info about cooking for the hermes since its been around longer
cooking trouble

operatorpkg is the operator package, which in our case is htc, so it should contain stuff like themes, startup animations, backgrounds etc. as obviously windows mobile doesn't ship with this when it goes to htc.
Make it easy on youreself in the start and focuse only on: C:\kaiserkitchen\OEM\OperatorPKG & config_operator.txt
You can setup config_operator.txt to skip right to config.txt (just make sure the files in middle are not used)
Just add youre cabs, xml and stuff in config_operator.txt. When you get used to provxml and how this work you can dig real into this. One stands a bit out wich you will use more the others and thats mxipupdate_oemoperators_105.provxml
Play whit this and slowly you understand the diffrence and needs of mxipcold, mxipupdate & mxip
I think its important not to bite over to much in the start, you just gonna get confused. Small steps and take time to understand youre prossess and what you are actually doing RIGHT NOW then slowly you will get the big picture of how this connects.
Do some digging on provxml. I attached a wery nifty tool for you if you are not a speedracer on writing youre own xml`s. Use this to convert .reg or .rgu to proxml/xml`s. And download XML Notepad 2007 here. Its free and all you ever need.
Hope this was any help to you
Firstly apologies for the noob question, I'm still very new to this WinMo stuff. And secondly I've searched about the forum all day but still having problems....
I've just got an HD2 and wanting to put some of the tweaks on it I've found via this site. When downloaded on my PC I'm faced with 4 or so files, two or three perhaps starting with a 'cab' file name and the other a reg or set up file. Basically what do I then do with these files? With the phone conected via USB I went into the deice memory and dropped all the files into the memory, did a soft reset, but nothing happened, no extra feature etc. Phone just started up as normal. Sorry for my 'thickness' lol. Would welcome any advice or a pointer to somewhere where it may be already written.
Thanks.
Do not unzip the .cab place on phone and browse phone with File Explorer, click on the .cab and install to Device....
It's a common noob mistake as .cab's are compressed archives so look like .zips on computer....
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll give that a go....
after dropping them on the device you have to run them. Open File Explorer and just launch them from there. A setup will be launched usually.
Thanks for the above advice, worked a treat.
Well I've had no problem putting cab files onto my HD2, however now I want to remove a few of them. Not sure how to remove the actual thing that I've changed??? I go into the device memory and I can delete the cab itself but the 'change' still remains, such as new task bar icons etc.
Any help appreciated....
settings -> add remove programs
just like on a computer
Oh yes of course, makes sense now. Many thanks
