Tips on extending battery life ?? - Palm Treo 750

Dose any body have good tips on how to extend battery life ?
any software etc.

The biggest drain is 3G connectivity. Unless you have a need for data & voice synchronously (e.g. push email), force GPRS until you need HSDPA.
Others:
BT off until needed (although this thread is interesting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2065636)
Always manually place in standby when done using (i.e. don't wait for it to timeout)
Use the keyguard

Doing this gives me about 50% more battery life than before. I also suggest getting the Sedio 1600mAh extended battery which will give you a bunch of extra juice and it still fits inside the standard battery door.

how do u force GPRS/EDGE insted of 3G ?

Its easy
Go to Wireless Manager/Menu/PhoneSetting/Services/BandSelection and select network type to GSM

Thenx, just done it

I've created a shortcut and mapped the PTT (hold) button to get me to the phone settings (get's you a little closer/minimizes clicks)
Or
do the same thing with this and use the 3G button: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317982

I use a program called GB soft tweak to automatically disconnet the data session at a preset time. Helps a ton.

I decided to write a mortscript to more easily toggle between auto and GPRS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2145594&postcount=371

Data Auto Disconnect

I'm sure this is a noob question, but I can't find the answer on the forum.
I've seen a couple people reference automatically ending the data connections when they're idle. Can someone explain how this is done?
Is the desire to disconnect the data to save on battery life? Just curious. Thanks.
That's the main reason I want to do it...not sure about others...
I figured out two ways to do this for anyone else that's interested.
1) Using Advanced Config Tool (V3.3): Menu > More Settings > Connections. Check "Disconnect After" and set the timeout you want. This seems to work well for activesync connections (my mail is set to recieve every 5 min), but doesn't always work for on demand connections (Internet).
2) Comm Manager Pro. No instructions for this since I'm not using it (yet). But everything I've read looks like it does it.
Like I mentioned, I've got my email configured to sync every 5 minutes and I have a connection timeout of 30 seconds set in Advanced Config. This setup has drastically improved my battery life. Before this change, I got maybe 12 hours on a good day. With this timeout set, I could probably get 2 solid days. The only thing I haven't figured out is if the timeout is and idle timeout or an overall timeout. What I mean, is will the connection end after 30 seconds even if it's in use?
I'm interested in this as well, it would be even better if outlook or msn live would make a connection and disconnect after synchronizing.
I've been looking for the same solution. So far using advanced config settings will force disconnect no matter if it was idle or not. I'm looking for a solution to disconnect only when idle.
As of proof, set auto disconnect to 1 minute and using latest skype v3.0 start transferring a large file. After 1 minute data connection will be forcibly disconnected.
Any solutions for this?
Thank you.
Can someone help me find the timing setting in Advanced Config? I've looked through everything - using Energy 3.0 Rom (WM6.5) and don't see anything related to data disconnect other than under "Data Connections:" "GPRS disconnect:" and my settings are "Enable button and timer"
I don't see where the timer comes into play; don't really care if the connection gets cut off - I'd rather see a battery life improvement.....
I'm an absolute idiot. I just skimmed through the thread and didn't read the post above... *smacks forehead*
Its been posted in this very topic, and its only 5 replies long

In advanced config the settings you are looking are not located in the list on first screen, the are in separate menu as described above.
And now I'll quote myself so my question will not get burred:

Thanks for the link, unfortunately it still disconnects even if data connection is in use.
WMLongLife can do this for you.
About the registry tweak that does this, I must warn you: it disables the ability to do voice and data simultaneously.

Yes it does require a certain way of using your phone (current test version has specific settings - you can change this in next version). Just saying.

Yes it can, but it depends on several factors. Under ideal (and never actually occuring) conditions it can be done with 2G GSM (GPRS/EDGE). Normally, however, either GPRS/EDGE connection suspends ('pauses') during voice call, or with 2G CDMA voice call may not work at all while data connection active (depends on exact 2G CDMA network type).
With 3G GSM (UMTS/HSPA) it is quite possible (and normal) to do data and voice simultaneously, however for some reason the auto data disconnect registry tweak breaks it. I'm not quite sure why, but it does.
3G CDMA (EV-DO) behaves the same as 2G GSM with regards to simultaneous voice and data (data drops), however, EV-DO Rev. A behaves the same as 3G GSM (possible but broken by registry tweak)
Aside from this, it is also needed that your provider/network has the correct hardware to handle this. I'm not sure how common it is for this properly operating on EV-DO Rev. A, but for UMTS/HSPA early tower equipment was bugged and did not allow this. In Europe, most UMTS/HSPA towers have since been upgraded to allow simultaneous voice and data (and HTC handsets support this perfectly), but how this is in the USA I cannot say.
Hope that explains it (it is a bit messy explenation I know)
if this dowsn't work then i have no ideea what will )

tell me if worked for you
!!!!!
I had it set to disconnect (via Diamond Tweak software) after 1 minute of activity. I did this to preserve battery life, BUT BUT BUT
With 3g on, and even with 3g disabled all day and edge on, the battery still died in 8, 12 hours (3g, edge) with the connection disabling. i use the phone for a good number of calls, text, and some data every day.
AFTER i reenabled it to NOT disconnect after every 1 minute, i pulled over 24 hours on a SINGLE charge.
am i the only one that's experienced this??

A few questions

Hi,
As you can see im pretty new to the polaris and i have been seeking a few answer for a few hours and can't seem to find an answer to a few of them,
So i hope some of you might be able to answer these for me.
1) I would only like to use internet through WIFI, so to prevent a huge phone bill i would like to disable gprs (this is the only internet option next to wifi right?)
I tried an application called NoData but it crashes on startup.
2) These are spb shell related: With spb 3 my phone doesn't go into standby (the screen turns off to save battery) also my scroll bars don't function anymore (this doesn't really bother me though)
3) Speed and memory, will using less memory speed up my device? As i see it memory will only reduce performance when it really low (usually i am at 50% usage)
Thanks allot for reading.
1) Advanced Config from here http://www.touchxperience.com/en/advanced-configuration-tool/downloads.html
Go to menu => more settings => connections Then disable the ones you dont want (all in your case)
2) No idea whats going on there sorry
3) Less memory used will mean faster. The main thing that slows it down is background applications running (using memory and cpu). So if you dont need something open then shut it. Thats pretty much it.
Hope its helpful!
menu => more settings => connections is empty does that mean i safe from huge bills?
The thing with my memory i have nothing running and i am at 50% so i was thinking of possibly switching to a light rom if that would matter (I just like the tools full comes with)
Thanks for your answers!

Hmmm... there could be a bit of problem... I'm connecting trough all types of connection: EDGE, GPRS, HSDPA, WiFi...
Altough, I'm not sure does EDGE connection work if you don't have data plan...

If you read my post, you would see i tried No Data but it crashes when i start it Nullrefence exception.
Maybe i could just ask this, i like the idea of footprint when i start it asks if it can use google location service.
Now from working with this i know that google can either query using CellID (which is free) or using the internet well i don't really want to use internet for every footprint or every weather update that is not wifi you see
If there are no connections then i would say that you cannot connect to whatever mobile internet point. If you dont mind having a small charge try it once and see then you can be sure that it will not have an unwanted connection.
On the front of light vs full probably a little difference but really there wont be huge differences i think.
@Bodisson yeh edge will still work without a data plan but it will eat your money for breakfast

Turn WLAN on/off via GPS-Coordinates

Hi Everybody,
im searching for a tool, that activates/deactivates WLAN via GPS-Coordinates in order to save power and don't have WLAN always on.
So i can save my known WLAN's in this tool and the WLAN Module turn's on/off automaticly, when i reach them.
I searched already here and with google... but didn't find anything...
I suppose you understand that for something like this to work you will have to be in open space. GPS does not work when you are in a building, since it needs direct visual access to satellites.
Have you considered using time as criterion to switch on/off wifi? For instance if you know that you want it to be on at home and you know that you are at home from 1800 to 0800 you can use this as critetrion.
There are several tools in this category:
http://www.connectivetools.com/ctscheduler.html
http://www.inesoft.com/eng/index.php?in=phone_profiler.html
I know about, that GPS needs a direct sattelite contact.
The best would be, that the tool will turn on/off when u came into an defined area.
Otherwise u could safe the GPS-Point infront of your entry door
Does WLAN use more power than GPS? (just a thought).
I think so... but would be interresting if someone realy knows.
U can drive with navigationsoftware for more than 10 hours without any problems...
Never had WLAN so long turned on, but i think it wouldn't last so long, until the battery runs out of power....
G-Profile could be interessting.
You can turn WLAN on/off in specified GSM Cells.

Would have suggested that myself, so +1 for G-Profile
That's already a step in the right way....
The cells in my area in germany r a little bigger, so WLAN could be on for a long time *G*
I will give it definatly a try, even i readed about some probs with the software in a german forum. But usualy ageye makes great software... G-Alarm is great...
I tried the tool now for a week and for my purpose it's a real battery killer....
The GSM Cells r too big over here...
Maybe someone knows another tool?

R U kidding?
GPS uses at least as twice the energy than wifi!!!!
I recommend a wifi shortcut app in start menu to activate wifi manually.
Wifi toggle i think....!
BTW, having phone in sleep state, switches off both wifi and gps.
So when waking the device, it will start search and connect to a preferred wifi spot.
I just installed good old "Battery Monitor". Maybe it doesn't work well, but the power cunsumtion is the following:
Idle: 200 mA
GPS: 310 mA
WLAN: 425 mA
also i travel a lot with my Topaz and Navigon and the Battery doesn't run out of Power the whole day. After 10 hours in use, the accu ist about 40%.
Right now, with WLAN 10-12 h on, i have to charge the battery every day....

Tips to get the most out of your battery:
- DONT PLAY GAMES TOO MUCH (or at least no 3D) ghehe
- Disable "Auto-Sync" and "background data" In settings menu
- Stop all running services you dont need: Settings >> Applications >> Running services
- Disable Data Roaming
- Enable GSM Auto (PRL): Go in the Dialer and dial: *#*#4636#*#* Press phone information and enable GSM Auto (PRL) This will help alot to save your battery BUT on some carriers it will set your connection to 2G.. I can confirm that on vodafone your connection will present 3G or H.. If it converts to 2G, then set it WCDMA preffered
- Reduce the screen brightness
- Disable GPS and "My Location service"
- Disable Your data connection if you're not using it
- Disable Audible tones in Settings >> Sound
- Disable Auto-brightness

The idea is good, but the battery tips aren't for everyone.
I add the manu kernal to gingervillian at the moment and use go launcher so nice to see a rom with both already in.

Setting GSM Auto PRL disables 3g in a lot of countries, right?
GPS can be left on safely because it's only used when starting a precise-location app (like Google Maps). All those weather-widgets and such don't use the GPS.
Disabling data-connection when not in use... well that way how do you get your notifications for Gmail, Google Talk, WhatsApp, etc... ?
If you turn your smartphone into an olddumbphone, then yeah it will give you great battery. Ofcourse, this kinda defeats the purpose of having a Desire, isn't it?
Not talking and / or playing games is the best battery saving tip I can give . All those different ROMs and kernels don't matter much to be honest. They can reduce the power usage if you don't use your phone (idle in your pocket) a bit, sure... but if you use your phone they're all the same .

Setting your phone to GSM Auto (PRL) is hard to explain, but it WILL keep your 3G data connection.
Thanks for the game tip will add it.
And its just a tip eh , if you always got synchronizing on, then i'll advise you not to disable.. but like me, i never have these services running so i just disable the connection

Well, it doesn't do here . I have data, but only 2g (old style gprs).
Sometimes the 3g icon appears near the Belgian border, but no H for the ultrafast that I pay for .
Wonder what Vodaphone does differently. But back in the time when we were porting the Hero ROM's to 2.1 before HTC does we had huge battery draining issues, and someone was spreading around that all should use GSM PRL to fix it.
A long thread of flaming cut short: It's not a fix but a trick do disable a lot of the newer functionality in your cell phone with 3g networks. On some it switches back to 2g (and you could just 'disable 3g' to get the same battery saving effect) and on some 3g was still possible so it helped.
Just saying, take care with that option if you want mobile speed. It's not always so simple as it's on your network

Control Data Speed on Android (GPRS)

Hi Team,
Is there any way we can control the speed of GPRS Data Speed , let say some 2kbps like that ?
I know its funny as GPRS itself is slow and why am i wanted to reduce its speed even lower. I got some idea in my mind to reduce battery drain.
Using Tasker I have achieved to control per application 3G Mode (WCDMA only) when they are active, and rest all the time phone will be 2G Mode(GSM Only)(mainly when phone is in locked state). I know the chat application would do background connect and prob for new data, at this time, if I can control the data flowto its minimum, I feel it will reduce the batter drain little more.
is there any way to active this speed control on Android with some application or tweak ?
Cheers,
Kirankumar.

What are the apps you are using? Some apps use GCM/C2DM (Google's push notification service) or store your chat messages online (Viber, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp,...). As long as apps have this, you don't have to stay online to get messages.
If you still want to do that, IMO reducing speed isn't neccessary. Let's imagine, an apps send 100KB data in 10 seconds is better than in 200 seconds.
