Can someone confirm tomtom 7 for PDA - General Topics

Currently I'm using tomtom 6, which I believe to be the best gps program around. However, the old maps are starting to annoy me and I have found a few big problems with them already. The new maps only work on tomtom 7, which has no pda version. With a search of all foruns, I found a post from two montsh ago (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1855454&postcount=3) where it says tomtom 7 will be released for sure for pda's. I really can't find any more information about this, can someone please confirm that tomtom will be released soon and I don't have to look around for other solutions?

As far as I know tomtom 7 wont be released for pda.
I have tomtom 7 on a pna and tomtom 6 on pda and believe me... the old navteq maps beat the living ***t out of the new teleatlas maps...
teleatlas maps are fine on big cities but when you go the small areas... street names are all switched, roundabouts where there are none...
it's just sad to see tomtom selling such piece of c**p maps when other pna/pda gps software is using navteq oldies that are far better...

what is a PNA ? im after tomtom 7 for my mates symbian 60 S3 phone, but cant even find it on the tomtom website

A PNA (Personal Navigation Assistant) is a dedicated navigation device. So it will not run WM (maybe at its base) but it's designed only to help navigate.

thanks alot

TomTom Navigator 7 WILL be released, however ...
It will be embedded in the ROM of new PDAs.
Luckily including Touch Diamond, so I would keep scanning XDA Developers for hacks ...

thats just dumb putting into the roms, as if no one is going to work out a way to seperate it!

That like saying you shouldn't lock your car because someone will find a way in.
I wonder if these new maps, that are no good, a being used because of TomTom's new "Reality View" feature.

Well there was an official product launch for the HTC diamond and HTC is not including Tomtom on the diamond. Rumours say that only the german O2 diamond will have tomtom included but there is no official statement for version 7.

Almost sure they don't release tomtom 7 for pda as they now have navcore 8 for pna. So if a new version is available it will most likely tomtom navigator 8 for pda.

Version upgrades for Tomtom :=)
see below ..

Version upgrades for Tomtom :=)
I believe the new version for PDA.s will be with us before X-Mas (in 3-4 month)
All those people who buy a dedicated device; have already. As tomtom has released
version 8 for their map-share and other technologies they need also need the feedback from the PDA guys and as HTC is rolling out so many new models they will possibly only release a version which runs on wm 6.1
i spoke to tech guy and he said something will be out in 3 month but we wait and see.
if anybody buys a htc diamond or new x75xx with mobile 6 (and the device has a gps ship )
please PM me as they normally ship tomtom tasters which might be the version 7 code..
otherwise I am running happy the tomtom v6.0xx with Windows Mobile 6.1 on a HTC 7500 and on a Kaiser which also has the ALK Product which ships from O2
regards

In Italy TomTom presented last version of Tomtom (for PDA) 2 weeks ago...
So I think we'll should be able to use it soon!

anybody an idea where we can find the latest version of tomtom for pda ????
(with Advanced Lane Guidance)
thanks

it's out
Tomtom 7 for PDA is out... but none got the crack yet

what to buy?

I currently have an eten m700 which I am very satisfied of, but the one thing that bugs me is the battery which is very weak and I`m getting kinda tired of it. I want to buy another pda or smartphone ( i also had a look at the blackberry bold) and I want a few suggestions. I want it to have phone, gps( i use igo a lot) wifi, BT, a good camera. Do you know what countries do the iphone maps or the blackberry maps have on their new terminals? And can these maps be used like i use igo.. ? thank you.

After owning a lot of Windows Mobile devices (Qtek 9100, Qtek S200 TyTn and Tytn II, Samsung SGH i600 and Samsung SGH i780 and Diamond Touch to name a few of them) I tried a Nokia E71 and wow what a smartphone - so stable and quick and the battery lasts for days. I don´t even miss the touchscreen. The camera is not very good, but at least as good on any camera in a Windows Mobile device except the Samsung Omina. So I can recommend it with all of my heart - will not be going back to Windows Mobile devices after using the Nokia for some weeks
is the gps usable on e71? i mean can i use it like igo on WM? and for what countries does it have maps?

TomTom's Grandfather Policy?

Hi all,
I've had a little trawl through the search feature but it seems there's not really much officially from TomTom for what I'd like. Also, I think the 'making' V7 from other devices install and work on the Orbit2 is too convoluted for me as I don't have time to faff about.
If I buy TomTom V6 and the USA/Canada maps from TomTom themselves, does anyone know about their grandfathering policy ? this means if I buy this V6 and they announce V7 inc usa/canada maps say in 2 weeks time, would I get sent the latest version ?
I just don't really fancy paying and then TomTom announcing the latest release 2 minutes later!
So is there any indication of a likely release date for Navigator V7 from TomTom for use on the Orbit 2 yet!?!
Also, whats the difference in buying the USA & Canada map and then the regional versions? are the regional versions more detailed? or is it just a size of map issue? if it's just map file size issue, then it's no problem to me as I have an 8GB card in my device.
Cheers, Dennis, West London UK!

I have no idea, most software manufacturers offer some sort of grandfathering which could be in the form of a free update or a discount on the newer software. But, there's really no point in guessing. Try calling them (and speaking to more than just one person if neccessary)

Again, no idea. I have heard rumors that TT7 will only be available as oem software for specific devices. But it seems silly that they would go this route, as there is less money in going this route. I would guess that they'll be releasing it soon, as it seems to be finished.

No difference, just size/price, and convenience if you are traveling between regions. I don't think that you can route between regions that are not purchased together as a unit.
In reference to your dilema, could you get buy with the free city map that comes with TomTom6 on the Cruise until there is any new info on TT7? Or could you get by using Googlemaps/Livesearch until then?

TomTom have been hit so badly by software piracy that they are very unlikely to release TT7 (apart form OEM versions).
Looks like the software pirates have killed the goose that laid the golden egg. I wonder how many more software developers will stop producing new products because of the losses due to piracy?

I'm not dening that they've been hit hard by piracy, but I don't think ony offering it as oem will solve their problem. If anything it will perpetuate the problem, as even less people will be able to get it through legitamate venues.
The ways to lessen piracy are to reduce prices, increase availability, and/or increase their software protection against cracking.
hi,
I have the SD card version of TomTom 6 that came with my polaris (well I assume it is because it is offered at the place I bought it from). I don't think you can upgrade or update it. the reason I said that, is because I was looking for another region's map from Garmin and they said anything put in SD card is not update-able or upgrade-able since it is made per order. some features are available if compared to the one that comes with the GPS hardware. once you set it up, that's it. my seller says that I have to uninstall the program and reinstall it again if I want to change the voice.

Why would you look for TomTom maps on Garmin's website? I don't have the SD version, I have the software version of TomTom, but I can't imagine that the SD version is not updateable. Start your TomTom software on the phone, goto TomTom Plus and try either downlaoding a map update, or a a voice there.
Some dealers are actually shipping "trial" versions of tomtom6 on a sd card with full country maps (rather then just a city map) usually just for the price of the SD card, this version doesn't work with any Tomtom plus services and you cant add extra maps etc. The proper version everything works.
As for grandfarthering tomtom has never grandfartherd any previous version so dont expect it for 6->7, then again its probably a bad idea to expect a proper version 7 at all.
To be honest if it wasn't for GPS smartphones tomtom would have abandoned the PDA version ages ago, whats the point when you're making tons more money on the PNA/PND market ? and OEM installation is a no brainer too, its a guaranteed sale when the pda version is really targeted at the people who are most likely to priate it.

I have communicated several times with Tomtom about a newer version software and maps. Never received an indication. And then to discover that it is available as OEM only. There is no way that you can buy it, only pre-installed on the HTC Diamond. You can only buy V6 for the PDA, whith maps that are out of date. Instead of pirates killing the goose I strongly believe that Tomtom killed their goose.

uhm... I didn't explain myself clearly. the other region's map I was looking for is the South East Asia region. TomTom didn't have it, only Garmin has it. that's why I was at the Garmin website and when I called them inquiring about whether the SD card version can be updated or not, that was their answer... "anything we put on SD card is made per order and the only thing you can update is the map that comes in your phone or the one you buy in DVD"
so, no, I didn't look for a TomTom's map in Garmin's website ...sorry for the mistake in the wording.
and as far as the SD card version, I asked the seller about it and he said it's a 1 time deal, you buy it, you own it until it broke there is nothing you can do to it.
DO NOT BUY V6 MAPS! You will loose your money!
Sorry for shouting but I tomtom made me mad. Bought Europe v 6.75 which was not discounted in contrast to v7 maps for my Orbit2 only to hear afterwards from the support that there will be NO update from tomtom6 to 7 or any discount on the maps. The v6 europe map also has fewer countries included than the v7 version. They suggested me to buy the full version of v7 when it eventually comes out.
So TomTom forced me to buy an older map with less content for more money without offering any update/upgrade path. Money lost. Consumer angered.
Also the new version of TomTom Home is NOT working with TomTom 6. So you have to get the outdated one. That also means no map share and less voices and POI's to choose from.
Better grab a TomTom7.cab and get a v7 map. People have reported that this combination works. The recent version of TomTom Home seems to work with that for the most part. Map Share works (with my v6 map). Putting on some extra stuff like voices doesn't. At least for me.
Or if you are in the market for a navigation software anyhow consider getting something else with a good policy on updates and maps.
TomTom support also sucks as a rule of thumb.
Of course the software itself works well.
P.S.
As for regional vs. bigger maps: I think it's just the map size in mb. I can't see a difference between the german map in the europe pack vs. the germany-austria-swiss pack. In most cases you will be better of buying the larger map pack as they are much cheaper than adding each country/region individually. Also this way path finding across borders will work better. I have seen no major problem performance wise with the complete western europe map vs. the smaller one on my polaris.
Garmin's map system is actually quite nice, its broken down into much smaller sections than a whole country and you can just upload the relevent maps rather then keeping a massive map pack on your gps system. and you can always update the SD version, the problem is getting hold of the maps in the first place...
Just to further the tomtom thing its also questionable to buy V7 maps (if you really must have the latest maps) as tomtom are actually moving onto V8 maps and software soon (for PNAs), which are obviously not compatiable with navigator 7.

Best SatNav application?

Looking to get a SatNav application going on my HD2.
Don't mind fiddling around a bit to get it running, as long as it works well (and not sluggish)
Which is the best one to use, as there is quite a few available for WinMo?
Thanks
Nice
I tried TomTom but coulnd't move it to another phone so gave up there
Route 66 had a problem that hampered journies. It always drove me down the smallest roads going, no matter what vehicle type I used.
CoPilot 8, so far, has been the best of the three AND costs less.
I'm using TomTom 7 and so far is the best. I've used TT6 on my two previous Orbit phones and TT5 on HP iPAQ 1710 and never had any problems.
But just look on websites, read some comments and I'm sure u will find right one
In my opinion is Navigon Mobile Navigator 7 a very good choice especially for Europe. It's also not too expensive. Used it already with my Xperia and now could easily move to HD2 (Navigon just gave me a new key). I don't have ANY problems with this awesome software. It is written for WVGA and it looks fantastic on the HD2-screen. You can load a demo at their homepage and use it for 30 days without any restrictions.
Does anyone know where one can get igo which I understand is supposed to be quite good. On their site it just says coming to WinMo as far as I can gather.
Some sort of trial would be preferable, but somewhere to purchase from would also be nice.
In Germany you can buy it e.g. at a little online-store called AMAZON... *KLICK*
I use IGO8.
I use tomtom and am very happy with that
I am using iGO8 works great in Greece.

My beloved children...: Try sygic mobile maps!!!
Everyone will have their own favourite..I've currently got the following loaded (in order of preference):
1) Tomtom navigator 7.916...this rocks
2) Garmin XT...the live features are cool which is what tomtom lacks
3) Sygic Mobile maps 9..nice and simple, nice signs and a few extras
4) Igo8..will do anything but not the simplest to operate
5)Navigon MN7.4..traffic and live services seem ok but not struck on gui myself..will eventually ditch this...16gb soon gets used up!
I did have the installed Co-pilot trial but never bothered paying to upograde it as I wasn't that impressed with it when I tried it.
I also found it usefull that the first 3 apps will also happily let themselves be rotated using BsBtools.(navigon sort of manages it but a bit messily and the version of Igo I grabbed had a fit when I tried to rotate it..even its inbuilt rotate feature wasn't happy..)

I was looking for the Tomtom navigator 7.916 but I am struggling to find it, what maps do you need for it?
As the navigator software is quite a low level program it will only let you use the lower grade maps (not those that have IQ routes and ALG) which for the 835 maps equates to 835.2366,2394,2420,2421,2423,2424,2450,2482,2497 and 2501. The full blown 835.2419,2448,2451 and 2460 versions wont play ball.
For 840 maps the ones to avoid are 840.2554,2562,2566 and 2568

I used to use TOmtom 7 and it worked ok.
But I recently tried iGo8 and have to say it's SOOOOO much better than Tomtom...I have it running at 800x480 res and it looks amazing...you can customise it with different skins, themes etc....well worth trying
I am using Garmin Mobile XT 5.00.20wp
Got the Aust maps, Malaysia and a few other countries.
Got it for free with the phone when i bought it on holidays in Malaysia, used it few times over there and here in Sydney, works not bad.
Not as user friendly as Tomtom but gets you to where you want to go.

Running TT7 on my HD2 atm. The BT issue is easily fixed by renaming 2 files.
You can use sensis maps with iGO8. make sure they are compatible with your version of iGO8 though.
hi
I’ve tried Tomtom IGO8 and some others
But THE BEST is Garmin Mobile XT 5.00
Maps for most countries, the details are amazing, for lan and lat u have more than 4 ways of inputs, u can send ur location as an sms and if ur friends uses garmin it will automatically run garmin and guide him/her and if not it will send the lan and lat so they can enter it in there gps device and it has maps for the desert and speed cameras weather flights updates........
Download the trail and see for ur self
Im using it in Saudi Arabia and its amazing
Sounds interesting. I am contemplating putting Garmin onto my phone along with TomTom7.
Hi there.
Just recently purchased and running Sygic Mobile Maps 9 (Australia New Zealand) and very happy with it. Easy to install, speed to load up, and route recalculation and POI's are excellent. Was about $85 AUD after convert from EUR on the local site. Download file about 200mb, installed to SD in about 2 minutes.
Cheers, Sean

Alternative GPS Navigation

Hello! I know that Google Navigation paired with the GPS is kind of awesome. But, it uses my data plan, in which I have limited bandwidth. I live in Europe - Latvia so many GPS navigation systems don't work for me. But I found this one cool navigation, which I kind of liked. It's called "iGo My Way". But the only problem is that it is not made for the Sensation because all the resolutions available are for smaller screens.
So I'm asking: Could you suggest a descent navigational software that I could use in offline mode with only the enabled GPS? Because I need routes, maps and finding new locations every day and bandwith in my country is weirdly expensive, compared to calls.
Oh, and: Which one of these uses most battery: GPS/3G?
Thanks a bunch!
Sorry for the double-post.
But is this a dumb question that nobody is answering it?
http://slideme.org/application/mapdroyd
or you can search it on the market (which I don't have installed on my phone, thus the direct download site.)
it requires initial data use to pull down the maps to your sd card and it says it can be used offline after that.
Thanks for the idea but the sad thing is that it doesn't work as a GPS navigational software.
I am ready to buy navigational software for my phone, just need to know which one will fit our screen.
iGO is very good navigation software but it doesnt support resolution of sensation. But if you search the forum you can find skins which make iGO can run with our device.
There are other alternatives like sygic and drive. These have native support to sensation. Route 66 will have support soon. Before you buy make sure, they have good maps
Major map providers are teleatlas, navteq and local providers. In my country local provider much better than the others. Teleatlas is generally better in europe.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk
For offline i prefer Navigon
I would recommend Sygic - it works fine on my Sensation. I have it for Europe. You can get Eastern Europe for 30Euros, and that includes Latvia. You can download the software from the Market and then buy the maps. Or download direct from Sygic. .
I use copilot and it works with sensation resolution
nDrive is excellent and works quite fine with good maps.
Navigon is the best for offline gps. But soon tomtom will also release a Android app. For now use Navigon it's not that expensive.

And I would not touch it with a ten foot barge pole! Their so called customer "support" is dreadful. I knew more about their product that the support people I was emailing! They told me it could not work on my hardware after I told them at it was. Been there done that got that T shirt. I do not want to go there again.
I used tomtom for years and that thing still works without problem. I cant wait for there app for Android.

At this moment I am looking at CoPilot. Will look into your suggestions too. Thank you for the responses!
sygic is the best so far ... (in my opinion)
tried : ndrive, navigon, copilot
if I'm running Sense, then I use the built in Locations.
If I am running anything else, then NavFree works pretty well. Maps download to the SD card for offline navigation, clear concise instructions.

+1 from me on that. Sygic is the best Android app for navigation
I have to demand u all, i must relay on nav software a lot and IGO is the best
igo my way
most commercial software, top maps and updates every month... all countries to hous number level. 6 3rd pary local providers who also build maps from same source for topm toom ad garmin.
Igo is best form pna and pda...
there is fantastic skin for sensation resolution, which adds many new features.

are u paid for this or just joking ? the most recent "skinned" version is 8.4 ... Laggy, and not handy to use. (poi system unusable, many many function missing) Telling this that way, i was using it since the win mob 6.0 times .... (till my 1st android phone > than tried it, and than came sygic and others).
and always remember : no official igo for android phones ... (a couple phone got oem version and those were "suited" to other phones). it was a lame step from navngo, but hey ... it was years ago i'm happy with my current selection
In my opinion Navigon is the best :} Try some navis and decide what is best for you!
You can also try "Locus". It's a map application which supports Offline Vector Maps, so it doesnt need much space on SD Card.
It also supports navigation, but i didnt tested that feature very much.
