Here's what I want:
I want to be able to view the maps of a place on my PPC (HTC Touch) without GPS. Kind of like Google Maps without an active internet connection.
So, the application must:
1. Be able to open and not complain that I don't have a GPS chip.
2. Must let me search for a street name, must show the map.
3. Must plot the way to a destination, again without a GPS.
4. Must work completely offline, with the maps that are on my SDcard, must not require any connection of any kind.
I can download the trial versions of all navigators and try one by one, but if you guys can recommend a software that does what I want, you'll save me great time.
Thanks...
Most GPS navigation programs will be able to work without a GPS chip, and as a rule, they use offline map information stored in your SD card. For example, you can try Tomtom or i-Go. Any of them can do what you want with minor configuration touches.
On my htc touch I'm using smart2go which is free and does everything you want. Install and start it once (without any maps). Then close it, put your memory card in a card reader and use "nokia map loader" to download the maps you want. All for free.
i'd love to have googlemaps running with saved maps, rather than downloading them.
Thanks a lot for the answers... I'll try smart2go first, if it doesn't work then tomtom.. and I agree that if googlemaps could work offline, it'd be the best navigation solution ever..
Just a hint: Before being able to load the maps to the memory card I had to change the version of the map loader application in the file qf which is in the root directory of the memory card! (it was 1.1 and changed it to 1.3)

how does the navigation work when the 3 day trial is over
Don't need navigation. Just look up places and calculate way from A to B.
Try www.mgmaps.com. If you can overlook that it's a Java midlet and a bit harder to setup than other commercial solutions this app provides a great featureset that in parts goes beyond what TomTom & Co. have to offer.
For a long time i've been looking for something like via michellin for pda, with a map installed in a storage card and a program that give me the indications from A to B.
Smart2Go 1.1w does all this!!!

Smart2Go 1.1w does all this on Samsung SHG-i200 (WM6.1 Standard)! But I don't know if there is an version vor Pro, too...

Hello all!
I have been lucky enough to finally get my Nexus One. Although my purchasing process was riddled with issues and lacked any support. I got the phone and it seems to be free of defects, and I am loving it even more than I thought I would.
I am moving from a Windows Mobile phone (FINALLY), and I had an app called Newsbreak which I used all the time. It would basically download all my feeds for offline viewing/listening including audio/video podcasts, and use the SD card for storage.
I have been looking for an equivalent on android and I appear to be left wanting. Most RSS reader appear to be online only, don't seem to support downloading podcasts, or requires Google Reader (sorry not wanting to give my Google Account password).
Does anyone know of a good offline RSS reader?
I have tried Newsrob (needs Google Reader), Listen (no offline?) and I am currently reviewing BlueRSS. I like BlueRSS, but I see no option to store on the SD card nor how to download the podcast or website for offline viewing. Since BlueRSS says it does this, I am not sure if I am missing something or it is just not able to do what I require.
If I need to I will design my own, but this is the only thing keeping me from using the N1 full time.
Thanks!
Check out Doggcatcher (no idea why they chose that name). Here's the feature list:
http://www.snoggdoggler.com/FeatureOverview
BeyondPod is a good solution as well. I use it for audio/video.
You can't beat Newsrob for RSS integration with GReader though. You can just create a new google account and export all your feeds and than use that exclusively for Newsrob.

DoggCatcher looks like ti will work and I will check out BeyondPod. I did not find these before since they appear to be paid apps, and I just moved my SIM over so it was hiding them from me before.
Wish there was a free one though. Maybe that will be my first Andriod project.
I really don't like Google Reader. Its convenient, but giving my login information to an app is just not safe. If there was a Google one I might try it, but they seems to want to force people to be online. Why use bandwidth so irresponsibly? Just don't make sense.
Thanks all!

Sorry Crucial Service Failed to start.
For reference I am using an S5 4.4.4 simulated in Genymotion.

hello, i have a samsung young 2 (sm-g130m) and i created a custom rom without google apps, in the installation in one part it asks you for a google account, so when it reaches that part the app goes back and I can't skip it ( after end user licence)

Hi and welcome.
I don't know your specific device but by analogy to others I can answer you, because I did the same thing, un googling my dewice by modifying the flash package components.
So, if it doesn't let you skip it, it seems that its not possible to do that, as you have to go through this entire process.
This first "install" sequence, whatever it forces you to do, does also real mandatory configurations.
If you get through it once (with fake credentials or even with a real one if it insists to check it - which would be very unfair by the way) it won't come back and all you have to check is that if it effectively uses google service to connect (like playstore) or not.
On my device I could get rid of EVERY google app and online service, playstore, gmail, youtube and all facebook and tutti quanti. So no credential could be used for this anyway.
I don't know how you managed to make change into your rom. It would be good to tell.
(I mounted the filesystem on linux to delete those big-tech apps.)
Just tell a bit more how you proceeded.
