I bought CoPilot bundled with my Orbit (Artemis) and at the time there were a lot of CoPilot .v. TomTom questions about. I joked that CoPilot was half the price, and you got what you paid for. I take all that back.
When I tried to add European maps to the 2006 installation they simply weren't available (Even when they had been it took forever to find where to get them from). So much for supporting customers.
I've installed TomTom 6, and to suggest that it's only twice as good as CoPilot is frankly an insult to TomTom. If you are offered CoPilot bundled I suggest you save yourself hours of tedious fiddling and bad user interface experiences and chuck it in the bin. Tom Tom is so much better that there's no point in comparing them. IMHO.

TomTom Mobile seems to own the market, no doubt about it. But it is still an open market and just a matter of time before iGo and smart2go (The next big GPS software providers after TomTom) start to add the right features to set themselves apart from the pack as TomTom has done so nicely.
I can't wait for the next generation of TomTom since it looks like they can really deliver.
I am planning on a TomTom upgrade soon, seen CoPilot on a friends Artemis and not even considered it.
P.S. </rant> works better
"I joked that CoPilot was half the price, and you got what you paid for. I take all that back."
sounds like to be that you confirmed it rather then take it back
I have both on my orbit2 (copilot came with the phone). I haven't found a significant difference yet, although I haven't really used TomTom properly (will do soon, of to Grand Rapids (MI).
I also have Google maps, and I was very impressed with the hybrid map view of my route to work today. OK it's not navigation, but it was awesome seeing the dot moving along the road and being able to even read the markings on the road on my Orbit screen. Needs at least 3G data rates if you're moving at speed though.

I totally agree - i have tryed atleest 5 different GSP softwares and i allways returns to TomTom. At this time i´m using TomTom Navigator 6 with the newest cards and its working so well -
Sorry to say that, but I would search for an alternative software (for PDAs). AFAIK Tomtom won't update their software anymore. They even didn't update the maps for a long period and it doesn't seem that they'll do it in future. Therefore I would have a look at some alternatives.

Well after a very unhappy honeymoon with my BT Navigator 2 & while waiting for the seemingly similarly complex & inadequate V3 upgrade, my 'trusty' BT GPS receiver has died, charging light works docked or directly connected but no GPS light or any hint of a signal being received!
Don't buy this rubbish! You have been warned!
Much poorer & still lost in Europe and having to fall back on MS Autoroute! :x
Sorry to hear the bad news.
Please let all of us know what the resolution is.

My GPS receiver has now been repaired & returned but the version 3 which we were promised would arrive in April has not materialised.
(Hello, TomTom! It's May! or did they mean April 2005?) HoHum, I'm still relying on £39.00 MS Autoroute to find the route to put into my £500+ TomTom! Duh!
I have found TomTom software and hardware to be very reliable and now that version 3 is available has become a real bargain. Except for a few discrepancies in mapping which has nothing to do with TomTOM as they use 3rd party maps, I think it is a near perfect system.

Hey Cruisin', don't know if you have ever tried 'Cruisin Thru' up to five countries a day but with TomTom it's been a nightmare! I have just installed the upgrade to mk3 (no mean feat either as it wouldn't accept the new maps <still on 8 CDs :x >) and have got 2 big trans continental trips coming up starting next week. So the truth will soon be out there! watch this space! 8)
Good morning. About 2 months ago my AT&T "Hermes" 8525 died, and I found myself without a touch screen pocket pc. Wanting to get something quickly, and not wanting to spend $700 on a Touch Cruise that there was little info about, settled for a BlackJack II from my local AT&T store.
Thanks to a friend with one, and other forums... I've managed to get it to tether to a laptop, install Garmin XT, and can do MOST of the things I could do with my Pro unit.
However, there are annoyances. Lack of Wifi, can't set reminders for 2 hours, smaller keys, etc. I'm making due for now, but all the while I've been keeping my eyes open for a new phone.
Last weekend, I went into the Apple Store and played with an iPhone for about 10 minutes. It really is something. The lack of GPS and turn-by-turn directions for when I travel, and slower Internet connection speeds are a concern. But then I realized maybe I could get by without.
I've heard about an app that lets you use your WM6 Pocket PC work as a wireless router. And if that's the case, I could carry two devices and do EVERYTHING I want.
iPod Touch for:
Pictures
Weather
Web Surfing
Phone/Pocket PC for:
Phone (syncs with my Outlook profile)
GPS (already own iGuidance and LOVE it)
E-mail
Unlimited Data Plan
The question remains, what phone do I want to handle those functions?
One thing is for sure. Having the Blackjack II for a backup allows me to hedge my bets, and have a decent backup device if I have another problem like the "white screen" issue I had with my 8525.
Sorry about the length, but thanks for your time!
Seems like such a waste and such a step backwards to have two devices. Esp when one WM device could do all of those things...
Show me one with as cool of a picture viewer, web browser, and overall cool package, and I'd be happy to stick with one phone. But the fact remains that WM6 devices sometimes:
Need rebooting that other phones don't
Interface is still a little clunky
Haven't seen one that graphically competes with an iPhone/iPod Touch
As I mentioned before, I'm interested in the Touch Cruise, and have looked at the MWg Flame, Atom Life, etc. But I'm just not sure any are as impressive as the iPhone, especially when browsing the web. Safari's experience is pretty sweet.
But the original Subject says it all. Which WM6 Pro device is your favorite? If you don't post, it doesn't suggest there is much competition.
Look into the leaked Opera Mobile 9.33. Thats app says everything.
But why don't you just get an iPhone.
Both OS have very good apps support.
Hi all,
not been here for ages. anyhow,
i am getting a varioIV on saturday, i was wondering should i carry on using my sat nav (if it works) with the external gps unit or use it with the phones gps.
i ask because i have breifly read about lag with internal gps, and it would be no big issue for me to use the external still.
if i want to use the internal i can use it with google maps or something.
i am actually dilemming over the touch pro or touch HD.
any suggestions greatfully appreciated.
mahender
Use either depending upon the access of the situation.
An external unit will provide a faster performance and a better receiver thereby returning better precision. When not in a car and at a much slower pace, use the internal when you need a quick fix for a location.
GPS issue
Great Question, the forums are full of fear for the built in gps on touch pro devices! However the vast majority of these quotes are 2008, I just picked up an 02 serra (touchpro) and it works great, the first ever gps link on googlemaps took about 5 minutes and the second ten miles away was around fifteen seconds. My tomtom gps receiver has been gifted to my (happy!) eleven year old!
Hmm, if you ask me, I would recommend trying the internal GPS first to see whether it works to your liking or not, then buying an external receiver if it doesn't.
See, I prefer internal GPS due to sheer convenience. I only have to charge one device and I only have to carry one device. However, it is true that external GPS receivers are just way better. I have an i.Trek M6 GPS receiver that works so well, it can get a signal deep inside my house, and it can do it quickly. The Touch Pro, on the other hand, eh...
Concerning the Touch Pro/HD, I would prefer the HD, but that's because I love WVGA phones. They're definitely not for everyone, though, and I would suggest you research each device carefully in order to make an informed decision.
thanks for your suggestions guys,
i have co pilot from my old vario 2 days just move it along with each phone.
i will keep this in the car and use that. then when im out and about i will use google maps with the internal gps.
as for my decision, i like them both i am unsure of the size and practicality of the HD but love the screen and hope the interface is good.
but i really love the qwerty key vario 4.
and i know beleive the HD is free on t-mobile woohoo.
it is also the carrying aspect HD big (ish) and the touch pro fat(ish) i think i will go and see them in the store.
thanks....
Hi!
I want to buy a 2nd hand Touch Pro, to use as a GPS.
I want to know what's the best and fast GPS software for this device.
Thanks!
tomtom seem to be liked by many
google maps
its free
Navicomputer is awesome if you don't have a data plan. Hell, it's awesome if you do have a data plan.
Hum tomtom or navicomputer... ok.
What about IGO?
Do you think that is a good device to replace my touch dual?
The earlier problems with GPS lag are solved??
Thanks!
I just bought Copilot Live 8 for $24.99. It's on sale right now and was $20 around thanksgiving. The reviews I saw for it seemed pretty good too.
sorry to change the subject, but why not buy a stand-alone GPS device? it will be cheaper and you'll most likely have a larger screen and a louder speaker than what's on the touch pro.
I also think that if u want to use it only as gps, just buy a gps, it's better then any pda. If u want to use the other functions of the touch pro tho, the gps in it is not that bad
and to the question - i use IGO 8, very good software with very good maps
If I buy the TPro, it will replace my Touch Dual.
Then, I wont need to have a solo GPS device.
OK, between TomTom or IGO, wich one is faster?
Depending on where you're located, I would also add Garmin Mobile XT if you're in the US.
It performs just as good as the Nuvi standalone units and uses the same, trustworthy routing system.
It also has nice online features, such as traffic, gas prices, google local search, etc.
I also love iGo's interface, especially since you can have different skins to make it even better. The biggest downfall for me is the routing. Some of the routes it has picked for me just don't make sense. And also the ETA on trips always seems to be off until you're close to your destination.
I liked iGo and Destinator! I used them on the Kaiser and liked how they work!
I just bought Copilot Live 8 with North American Map. But the map looks so out dated. I can't even find my community drive way, and my address can't be found. It looks like at least 5-7 years ago map.
Does Copilot only support Europe map?
It's not quite that old, but pretty close. My house was built just over 4 years ago.. (4 years and 3 days to be exact) and it has my street on the map, but I had to use a custom long and lat, as it shows the street, but not the street name.
I was pretty impressed with Copilot 8 overall, but there are some things that frustrate me, the maps are fairly old, I would say 3 years easily, and it will tell me to back track if I miss a turn, rather than seek out the next closest route.
May still get my $30 out of it, if I buy it, but have not fully decided yet....
Can't say I'm having that problem here in Texas, but I have been reading that their maps are old. Honestly the only thing they have going for them is that it's compatible with the HD2. They supposedly have had some "updates" for their maps, but I haven't read any details as to what that "update" really includes.
