hi all,
seeing as my wizard supports some of the 4GB miniSD cards that are now very cheap, and I've come across synctunes that'll allow me to synch it to itunes, i want to upgrade my card.
however, i've installed a load of apps to my card which i don't want to break.
now, if i copy everything off my old card to the new, will WM5 notice it's changed? do the apps installed to the card care about what the card itself is named as, or is it just called a generic storage card as far as WM5 is concerned?
cheers
ric
just copy over, it should work.
My Qtek 9000 cannot recognize 4GB SD card (DANE-ELETC)
Your help much appreciated.

I guess you mean 4Gb SD Card.
Is it SDHC?
If so, then it would be worth looking in the Universal accessories board at what people have to say, which is 'no' for the sdhc cards.
I bought a 4 Gb card but it is a non-sdhc type so that it would work.
Cheers

I can't seem to find the manufacturer's website. Can you post the the spec sheet of the model you have got?

Exactly...I'm using a 4Gb transcend non-HC and it's works find ...!! I heard about problems concerning the SDHC for the universal... Maybe you should change your SD
Transcend 4GB 'SD' card getting corrupted repeatedly
I have one annoying problem,It is the third time that my Transcend 4GB SD card got corrupted without any reason ( as far as I know ).
It goes like this --I just moved one .jpg image ( clicked with my Universal ) from main memory to card -- a my document--my pictures folder, then I checked it ,the entire my document folder is empty..around 150 MB.No data recovery tool can retrieve it.
The default file explorer and Resco explore read the card differently --950 Mb and 1100 MB respectively. The data is gone, the space 150 MB is gone.On previous two occasions, there was not any transfer of any data from device to card yet it happened .I had the card replaced, but it is very annoying to live in this impending possibility of losing the data.
What is the cause of this problem?WM6?Universal?ROM?4GB?Transcend?
I never had this problem with 1 GB cards. What is the solution? Please suggest something, anything.
There are a couple of WM6 roms which can corrupt your SD card.
But it shouldn't make a difference if you have a 512 mb card or 4 gb.
Did you upgrade to WM6 and then got the 4gb card?
You could try to flash back to the original wm5 rom from your manufacturer, good change the problem's gone then.
ROM change?
No Sir,
I did have this problem with WM5 and to get rid of it I shifted to WM6,but the problem persists.Other people with WM5/6 with 'NCP' 4GB are doing fine,I am also going to try it.Like I said I never had any problems with 1GB.
I like the HTML mail support in WM6 and I need it for the attachments so I'd rather keep WM6.
One more thing, the file explorer SOMETIMES shows two separate folders viz. storage card 1 & storage card 2, and in storage card 1 there are only files called mail attachments. At the same time all the today shortcuts and programmes on the card are 'uninstalled',Then I have to hard reset and install the back-up file and everything comes to normal. What does it mean? Please clarify.

This is a known issue. Sometimes the system forgets about the exixstence of SD card. You can brows here for such cases. People claim that it happens while the battery goes low or for some other reason.
However, if this happens, and some of your apps are set up for using Storage Card for saving it's data, then the system creates a folder named "Storage Card" in the main memory. Then if you softreset or recharge your device, the system finds again your SD card and tries to give it a name "Storadge Card", but this already exists, so it names it as "Storadge Card1", and so on.
Solution:
Ither delete the "Storage Card" folder from main memory or rename it as you wish, and then rename your card as "Storage Card" and softreset your device. It should help.
okay

Okay,
Thanks for explaining and the simple solution.
But a soft reset doesn't solve it,reinstalling the backup(I use SPB)does.
But what about the card getting corrupted, losing data and vanishing folders? Is there any cause and solution for it? Or should I go for another card manufacturer as decided?
i have tested 1 gig sdhc

SDHC start at 2gb, you have a normal SD.
Native universal SD driver does not support SDHC, the driver ignores CMD8 that is required for SDHC to work. I've purchased 8Gb card and can tell that after patching - Uni started to recognize it. But testing is required before publishing a patch.

Does this patch involve physically deforming the SD Card such that its lifetime warranty (lifetime warranty is applicable to some SD cards only) becomes void?

I always wished a scenario would come up where I could ask such a question and make it seem valid at the same time
How about 4GB SDHC?
If 8GB SDHC can be used then how about using a 4GB SDHC card?
And please make it possible,soon,Mamaich.Thanks.
I currently have a new TyTN II. I already had a 2gb microSD. Due to arrive in my hand shortly are a full version of TomTom 6 and a 4gb.
Is there a way to transfer all of the data/apps on the 2gb card to the 4 without having to re-install everything?
Just put the 2GB in your computer / an SD Card reader and copy the entire contents of the 2GB to a TEMP folder on your computer. Now remove the 2GB card and insert the empty 4GB card and recopy everything from the TEMP folder on your computer to the 4GB card.
SIMPLE!!!

Thank you for your response. To clarify my question with an example, if I had TomTom installed to the 2gb, would the process you describe work without reinstalling the program?
When you say "TEMP", do you mean just create a new folder on the desktop, for example?
It seems that I have tried to simply copy the contents and the programs then had to be reinstalled.
Yes it will work that way. I've done it many times, although not with tomtom, but every other app I have installed on it works so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I've even copied my miniSD from my wizard on to my microSD for my Kaiser and all of the programs still work without being installed over again.
You can name the folder anything you want on your computer, besides, you may want to keep it for backup in case something happens to your card anyway. I backup my card about once a month since SD cards tend to corrupt a little too often.
I guess I have wasted a lot of hours of my life reinstalling apps when I have changed devices. HP4700 to TyTN to TyTN II over 3 years or so.
Thanks again for your help.
I am going travelling and want to make I have a backup micro SDHC card (SanDisk 8 gig) of my progs/data just in case. Whats the best procedure for making a copy? Backup and Restore? Straight copy (via HD)? Presumably best to use a card reader and keep activesyn out of it? Or is it...
I'm a little worried that some things might not copy (e.g. TomTom maps etc) perfectly because of anti-piracy code within the software. (All my software is legit).
Thanks
If you want a convenient way of making a backup of your storage card, use Sprite Backup to back it up.
Quickest, safest and most reliable way of doing it would be to simply put it into a card reader and copy the files off it. Don't bother trying to do it via the mobile device syncing or any other software. Taking the card out of the phone ensures that all files are closed and the device isn't going to be updating them as you're trying to copy them.
Oh and I should have said that I recently did this when I upgraded from a 2gb to an 8gb card. I already had both CoPilot (which came with the phone), and TomTom installed on the card (both legit!), and they both worked fine once I'd put the newly copied 8gb card into the phone.

Edit: sorry to dig up such an old post...
I'm new to Windows Mobile devices, having previously only used friends' before. I have orderer the Touch Pro, but I think this is more a general question, so I'm posting it here.
Is it safe to swap the SDHC cards while the device is on? I have ordered an 8GB card, but I also have a 4GB card already. I was wondering if I can put movies for example on the 4GB, while having music and everything else on the 8GB. This means I can bring more data with me.
Some programs will be installed on the storage card, so what happens when the card they are installed on is removed?
Also, is it best to install most things on the storage card or internal? I've seen reports of some programs not working well or at all unless installed internally. Is that common? Id rather not fill up the internal storage too fast.
Thank you
sum notes:
ur 4 gb card will prolly load up the appz much faster then the 8gb , i hate how slow my sandisk 8gb card is compared to my 4gb patriot card
definitely try to get the more xpensive higher speed cards
sum progs only work if u install it to the device memory and not the SDMMC
when u take out ur sdcard , and put in another one, u prolly gotta reboot so the pda can refresh/view it
to transfer files i use softick card exporter v3.12

ok, but what happens to programs? are the links still in the programs folder after the sdhc card they were installed on is removed?
if i have tomtom on the 4gb card and the rest on the 8gb card, will everything work ok without having to restart between swaps?

Any program you install on a card, if you remove the card, of course the program icons won't work. Just plug the card back in, no need to soft reset and it will work.
I suggest, use your 4 GB card for ALL your programs including TomTom with maps, so you can place all your videos and music on the bigger 8 GB card. I doubt you can fill the 4 GB with just programs, unless TomTom's maps are bigger than 4 GB. That way, the only time you have to insert the 8 GB card is during music and video playing.
Better yet, try installing ALL your programs on the 8 GB card, even music and video files. I am sure you will keep all your music files. For the video files, if you are like myself who after watching the converted DVD files, deletes them off the card so to place a new DVD movie file to watch. THERE IS NO NEED TO TAKE OFF THE CARD FROM THE DEVICE, all you need is WM5torage which is a FREE program that will let you view the card as an External Disk Drive. In other words, WM5torage turns your device into an instant card reader without removing the card itself from the device with just a push of a button. So deleting or file transfer is WAAAAYYYYY faster than using active sync.
